Kanaani Cat: Breed Info‚ Pictures‚ Care &; Traits

The post Kanaani Cat: Breed Info‚ Pictures‚ Care &; Traits by Kristin Hitchcock appeared first on Catster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it‚ but all of these articles were assigned‚ contracted and paid for‚ so they aren't considered public domain. However‚ we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article‚ then linking out to the rest of the piece on Catster.com. A Kanaani is a relatively new and rare breed of cat that originated in Israel during the 1990s. The breed was started by Dorris Polarschek‚ who tried crossing a Libyan wild cat with a domestic feline to create a wild-domestic hybrid. However‚ she faced difficulties. Eventually‚ she decided to mix several kinds of domestic cats‚ including the Abyssinian and Bengal‚ with African wild cats. The breed wasn’t completely solidified until 2000 or so‚ and there are still very few of these cats around. Breed Overview Height: Medium Weight: 7–12 pounds Lifespan: 12–15 years Colors: Ticked tabby‚ solid black‚ bi-colored Suitable for: Active and experienced cat owners Temperament: Energetic‚ independent‚ intelligent These cats carry the genes of wild felines‚ so they tend to be much more energetic than other cat breeds out there. They have a short‚ dense coat that comes in several different colors. However‚ they’re almost always “ticked”‚ which occurs when individual hairs have different colors. While these cats can be very beautiful and wild-looking‚ it’s important to look truthfully at their temperament and needs before deciding to adopt one. These cats will spend much of their time running around. While they can be affectionate‚ they are not lap cats. They also have a very high prey-drive‚ which often leads to them playing far more than your average domestic cat. Kanaani Characteristics Kanaani Kittens Image Credit: Nikolina Ivanova‚ Shutterstock Kanaani kittens are even more energetic than their adult counterparts. These kittens hardly sit still! They literally go until they can go no more and often fall asleep wherever they stopped playing. Their tiny claws tend to be like magnets to toes and anything else that moves. Often‚ these cats will “chase” things that aren’t even there. They tend to be exceptionally noisy‚ too. While their voices may start off rather quiet‚ they’ll quickly gain strength. They may seem to chat at you constantly. It’s important to provide enough exercise and stimulation for these cats while also providing firm boundaries. They need a cat tree and plenty of toys. Preferably‚ a fenced-in‚ outdoor play area should also be provided. Early socialization is crucial‚ as these cats can become a menace later without it. Remember‚ they are partially wild‚ so they need a little extra practice being domesticated. These cats are often challenging to find. They are mostly found in Israel‚ and you’ll often have to import a kitten if you live elsewhere. There are very few dedicated breeds‚ so prices tend to be high and waiting lists long. Prepare yourself for a long wait if you’re set on one of these kittens. Temperament &; Intelligence of the Kanaani These cats tend to be especially playful and energetic. They have seemingly boundless energy and will run around your home at all hours of the night. Kanaani love to chase‚ jump‚ and climb. Playtime with their owner is their favorite time of the day. You’ll find that these cats are more independent than other felines. They often enjoy quiet solitude‚ even though they do form strong bonds with their owners. They aren’t prone to separation anxiety and do just fine spending much of their time at home as long as their environment is set up properly. Kanaani are also much braver than other felines. They don’t tend to hide when strangers come around‚ especially when well-socialized. However‚ they don’t tend to curl up in everyone’s laps‚ either (though toes tend to be a free-for-all). If not properly socialized‚ they can assert themselves a bit too much and potentially even be aggressive. Kanaani are also very intelligent. They have sharp minds and can figure out what you’re talking about rather quickly. However‚ they can also be a huge pain to train. They are exceptionally independent‚ so they’re unlikely to listen to commands unless they want to listen to commands. Patience and early training are key‚ but don’t expect these cats to be as obedient as a Labrador Retriever. Instead‚ their intelligence tends to be applied to solving problems. They quickly become escape artists and very good at opening cabinets. It can be hard to keep dangerous chemicals and other items out of their reach. Are These Cats Good for Families? Kanaani cats aren’t typically a good choice for the average family. They work best with experienced cat owners and older children (if you have children at all). You should be able to provide ample enrichment‚ which typically requires a lot of time and space. Their wild nature can lead to accidental nips and plenty of scratches. Young children tend to be the most at-risk‚ as they aren’t very good at getting out of the way. However‚ it’s bound to happen to everyone in the house‚ so be prepared. If you don’t want to deal with a few cat scratches‚ this breed isn’t a good option. While intelligent‚ these cats tend to be unpredictable. Image Credit: Heidi Bollich‚ Shutterstock Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets? Kanaani can get along with other pets. However‚ this can be a bit of a mixed bag. Sometimes‚ they get along great. Other times things may be more challenging! Their predatory instincts make them likely to stalk and attack any other pet you have. It’s important that your other pet can handle this. You should also consider the temperament of the other animal. A larger dog might not put up with a cat that doesn’t know boundaries. Kanaani can also be more territorial than other cats. They’re less likely to get along with cats they didn’t grow up with‚ and some may even turn on their own siblings. It depends a lot on temperament‚ but you never know what you’re going to get until your cat gets older. Therefore‚ it’s often best to adopt a Kanaani only if you don’t have other pets. They can sometimes get along well with others‚ but it is hard to know for sure. Things to Know When Owning a Kanaani Food &; Diet Requirements Kanaani don’t necessarily have special dietary needs compared to other cats. Often‚ a meat-based formula that’s designed for your average canine is plenty to keep these cats thriving. However‚ some may need extra calories due to their very active nature. They tend to need more food than a fully domestic cat of the same size would need. Keep this in mind and speak to your vet about specific feeding recommendations. You may want to consider using wet food‚ as it has a high moisture content. This moisture content is great for hydration and preventing urinary tract infections. Generally‚ wet food tends to be higher quality‚ as well. Don’t free-feed these cats‚ as they tend to be very food-oriented. They often eat too much when provided with unlimited food. Instead‚ provide several smaller meals throughout the day that are measured. Monitor your cat’s weight regularly so that you can adjust their diet as appropriate. You may need to increase and decrease the amount of food they get at different times‚ depending on their activity level. Image Credit: Heidi Bollich‚ Shutterstock Exercise Kanaai are exceptionally active‚ so you typically don’t have to worry about them getting enough exercise. When provided with the proper climbing structures and toys‚ they’ll often spend much of the day running around. That said‚ you should dedicate at least 2 hours to encouraging play or playing with these cats each day. They can become bored if stuck playing alone for much of the day. Don’t stick to the same routine‚ as their intelligence leads to them boring easily. Offer many different activities and switch out toys regularly. Add some vertical features to your house‚ like cat trees and shelving. These cats often love to play with just about everything‚ so stock up on as many toys as you can buy. Due to their intelligence‚ they require some mental stimulation‚ too. Consider investing in puzzle feeders and other puzzle toys to help your cat engage their mind. Without proper mental stimulation‚ these cats are prone to destructive behaviors. These cats will often walk on a harness if you start training early. Walks can be a fast way to meet their exercise needs. Training Kanaani cats are smart‚ but that doesn’t translate to trainability. They are also very independent. They aren’t going to follow most commands‚ even if they know what you’re saying. For instance‚ if your cat is doing something bad and you start rewarding them when they stop (such as scratching on the furniture)‚ they may start doing that bad thing to get the treat. Or‚ they may figure out a way to break into the cabinet where the treats are stored. Their observational skills and problem-solving abilities can make them a force to deal with. These cats are also rather sensitive‚ so punishment doesn’t work. Instead of learning from corrections‚ they tend to lash out and become aggressive. Of course‚ that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to train your cat. They’re often food-driven and enjoy the mental challenge‚ so you’re often most successful by making training fun. If you turn it into a game and add in plenty of activity‚ these cats may see training as playtime. Grooming These cats do not require regular grooming. Like most felines‚ Kanaani cats clean themselves well. They don’t need baths and may be downright aggressive if you try to make them take one. In the rare instance that they need to be cleaned‚ cat wipes are often a better choice. Kanaani tend to shed a lot‚ so it’s important to brush them at least once a week. Start early to get them used to brushing. A slicker brush often works best‚ but a grooming glove will work in a pinch if your feline won’t sit still for the brush. During shedding season‚ you may need to increase brush sessions to twice a week. Typically‚ this occurs during the spring and fall. However‚ it can vary from cat to cat. We recommend trimming these cats’ claws if you can. Use cat-specific nail clippers and be careful not to cut them too close to the quick. These cats tend to be a bit too aggressive with their claws‚ and clipping them can prevent scratching. Don’t forget to brush these cats’ teeth several times a week. They can be prone to dental issues‚ which are extremely common in cats. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Association Felina Greece (@felinagreece) Health and Conditions These cats are considered very healthy. However‚ they are a rare breed and very new. We likely don’t know all of the conditions that are common in this breed. As they grow in popularity‚ it may become more obvious what health conditions occur most frequently. Currently‚ these seem most prone to injuries. They’re often very active and get into things they aren’t supposed to. Their adventurous spirit can lead to injuries and ingesting toxins. It’s important to cat-proof your house from top to bottom‚ but not all injuries can be prevented. Sometimes‚ it just comes with owning the cat. They tend to eat just about everything and explore more with their mouths than other cats. Therefore‚ they may also be more prone to parasites. Fleas‚ ticks‚ and worms are all more likely‚ especially if these cats are given access to the outdoors. Preventative medication is highly recommended‚ and you may want to deworm your cat regularly. Minor Conditions Injuries Parasites Serious Conditions None that we know about Male vs. Female Males of this breed tend to be slightly larger than females. However‚ this difference is slight and not necessarily set-in-stone. Behavioral differences are also very minimal and mostly driven by the sex hormones. If your cat is spayed or neutered‚ these differences often become nonexistent.   3 Little-Known Facts About the Kanaani 1. They have wild ancestry. These felines are directly related to wild cats. Socialization is extra-important to ensure that they behave well indoors and around other people. They can revert back to wild behaviors faster than domestic cats‚ and they may be more prone to aggression when raised improperly. 2. Kanaani are very noisy! Cats are often thought of as quiet. However‚ these cats tend to be exceptionally noisy. They have a wide range of vocalizations ranging from chirps to full meows. They’ll often have a “conversation” with their owners and will make their distress very clear if you upset them. 3. They all have green eyes. Most cat breeds have varying eye colors‚ but this breed always has green eyes. It’s a trait that they’ve had since the beginning‚ and it won’t go anywhere unless a different eye color is introduced at some point. Of course‚ the exact shade of green can vary. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lito Josol Maggay (@ohlito) Final Thoughts Kanaani may seem like a great breed to own. After all‚ they look like wild cats and have an aura of exoticness about them. However‚ they can be a lot of work and aren’t suitable for your average family. They act like wild cats‚ which makes them very energetic with a sky-high prey drive. This temperament can be a lot to handle. We don’t recommend this cat for those with younger children‚ as they can be a bit too aggressive when playing. An experienced cat owner is a must‚ but these cats tend to act quite a bit differently from your average domestic feline Sources https://www.petguide.com/breeds/cat/kanaani/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cat_breeds Featured Image Credit: BINGI VAMSHI KRISHNA‚ Shutterstock The post Kanaani Cat: Breed Info‚ Pictures‚ Care &; Traits by Kristin Hitchcock appeared first on Catster. Kucing Malaysia: Breed Info‚ Pictures‚ Care &; Characteristics

The post Kucing Malaysia: Breed Info‚ Pictures‚ Care &; Characteristics by Catster Editorial Team appeared first on Catster. The Kucing Malaysia is a relatively new breed of cat‚ having only been first bred in the 1990s. It is the first Malaysian breed and has the same coloring and marking as the Ragdoll and is considered a loving and loyal feline breed. While it is recognized by the Malaysian Cat Club‚ it is not formally recognized by any other fanciers’ association and is rarely found outside its home country of Malaysia. Because it is not widely recognized‚ there are different colors and variations of the breed‚ but potential owners will find it difficult to locate the Kucing Malaysia‚ which also goes by the name Piawaian Kucing Malaysia. Breed Overview Height: 7–12 inches Weight: 9–17 pounds Lifespan: 12–15 years Colors: White‚ brown‚ fawn‚ tan‚ beige‚ tortie‚ agouti‚ blue‚ chocolate Suitable for: Families that want a fairly level-headed but playful cat Temperament: Loyal‚ loving‚ calm‚ playful‚ energetic Kucing Malaysia Breed Characteristics Kucing Malaysia Kittens Image Credit: ADILAH BINTI AZHARI‚ Shutterstock The Kucing Malaysia cat is popular in Malaysia‚ being the country’s first official cat breed‚ but is rarely found outside Malaysia because it is not yet recognized by any fancier associations or groups other than the Malaysian Cat Club. Because it isn’t officially recognized‚ breeders are reluctant to breed the Kucing because they won’t raise as high a price as other purebred cats. You will have to find a highly specialized breeder to find one of this breed. The breed might become more popular and readily available as a standard is reached and its popularity spreads outside Malaysia. Although they are rare‚ you may be able to find them in rescues and shelters. Where possible‚ it is always better to adopt than shop‚ although this may not be possible with difficult-to-find breeds. The breed is known for being lively and active‚ which means you can expect inquisitive and playful kittens. They are about average size and will likely reach full maturity at the age of 12 months. Ensure the kitten is well socialized from a young age. Although the breed is known for being friendly‚ if it doesn’t meet strangers or socialize with other animals‚ it might grow up to be nervous in new situations. You can also start litter training as you get your new kitten home. Temperament &; Intelligence of the Kucing Malaysia The markings of the Kucing Malaysia are very similar to the markings of the Ragdoll‚ and the breed shares some characteristic similarities‚ too. It is an affectionate cat that will get on well with family members and regular visitors and will usually get along well with strangers. With gradual introductions‚ the Kucing Malaysia should also integrate well into a family with existing pets including other cats and dogs. It is a playful breed and requires regular exercise to ensure that it is physically and mentally active. The cat is medium in size and has an athletic build. The egg-shaped head and alert eyes give the Kucing a distinctive and recognizable appearance. Are These Cats Good for Families? The Kucing Malaysia is said to be a good family cat. It gets along with people of all ages so is good for families with or without children. You should always supervise very young children around pet cats. If a child grabs at the cat’s ears or tail‚ it may respond by scratching or biting and it will upset the cat. The breed is also a good choice for individuals and couples‚ as well as seniors who are looking for a companion. It is bright and lively so can make a good house companion for any potential owner. Image Credit: Azrin MC‚ Shutterstock Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets? Although it does depend more on individual character and how respectful the other animals are‚ as well as how well introductions are made‚ the Kucing Malaysia is generally thought to be good with other animals. It will usually take to existing cats and‚ as long as the dog isn’t too boisterous‚ a Kucing should also get along with dogs. Never leave a cat unattended with smaller animals. Even though they are domesticated animals‚ many still have a prey drive. And pet animals like mice and hamsters don’t have the natural skills to be able to get away from predators as threatening as cats. When introducing the Kucing to existing pets‚ take things very slowly. Allow some time for the cat to get used to its new surroundings and to start to bond with you. Give it a space and bed to call its own and provide toys‚ a bed‚ and other items. When you make introductions‚ ensure the cat has somewhere to escape to. It is generally best to provide an area that is high up and out of the reach of the dogs‚ or in another room to your existing cats. If you are introducing the cat to dogs in your house‚ you can use a stairgate to help facilitate introductions. This will allow the two to sniff one another through the gate without having to get too close. Things to Know When Owning a Kucing Malaysia The Kucing Malaysia is a rare cat outside Malaysia‚ but it is a friendly‚ active‚ and bright medium-sized feline. It will get along with family members and friends and is generally friendly with strangers. Although difficult to find outside its home country‚ the Kucing can make a great family pet. However‚ no single breed is the ideal cat for all homes and families. Below‚ we look at some of the most important aspects to consider when taking on this breed. Food &; Diet Requirements Cats are carnivores‚ which means they need to get the majority of their protein from meat sources. You can feed either wet or dry food‚ but make sure you feed a balanced meal. Dry food is made from a combination of protein and other ingredients. It is effectively dried out by heating the food under pressure. This extrusion process leaves a hard kibble. The food does not typically contain any moisture‚ although some do retain a small amount. Typical proteins include chicken‚ lamb‚ or pork. Dry food has a long shelf life and can be left down for longer before it needs to be picked up. It also causes less mess. Canned food‚ or wet food‚ usually contains the same ingredients but is cooked in a broth or other liquid that is left in the food. This can help ensure that cats stay hydrated. Not all cats will freely take food from a water bowl‚ and the moisture in wet food helps. Wet food is more palatable to a lot of cats‚ especially fussy eaters‚ and the softer pieces are easier for cats with dental and oral problems to eat. Cats‚ like all animals‚ need water to survive. You should provide a bowl of fresh water and ensure it is filled at all times and refreshed daily. Your cat may prefer to have its water away from the food bowl and definitely away from the litter tray. If your cat refuses to drink water from the bowl‚ you can try a water fountain. If your cat is put off still water‚ the flowing motion of the waterfall might encourage regular drinking. Image Credit: benzybie‚ Shutterstock Exercise Cats need regular exercise. If you let your cat have time outdoors‚ ensure there are no natural predators. Also‚ consider whether there are any other cats or even dogs in the neighborhood. If you keep your cat as an indoor cat‚ you will need to provide regular exercise. Buy toys that encourage physical activity. Interactive toys that involve both of you also provide a great way to build a bond between you. You can also buy a harness and leash and walk the cat every day to provide exercise and allow time outdoors. Training Cats can be trained using similar methods to those used to train dogs. Use positive reinforcement‚ which means praising positive and desirable actions. Use high-value treats and reward your Kucing Malaysia with a treat when it does something you want to encourage. If you are trying to discourage your cat from doing something negative‚ distract the cat by encouraging positive behavior and then praise them and reward them. The first thing most cat parents train their cat is to use a litter tray. Buy a litter tray that is large enough for your cat‚ usually one and a half times the size of the cat. Place it somewhere quiet‚ ideally against at least one wall. Encourage them into the litter tray and let them dig. Do this‚ especially after meals and when you notice your cat taking large drinks. Don’t punish your cat if it goes outside the litter box‚ but do praise and reward when they successfully do their business in the desirable location. Learn to recognize the signs when your cat needs to go to the toilet and carry them to the litter tray. It can take time to fully litter train a cat‚ so you need to be persistent and continue with the praising and rewarding. Grooming The Kucing Malaysia has a short coat that sits close to its body. This means that the breed doesn’t require too much grooming but it is still a good idea to groom at least twice a week. Grooming helps ensure that the coat is tidy by removing knots as they start to form. You should also brush your cat’s teeth at least three times a week. Check their claws periodically and clip them every few weeks to prevent nails from getting too long. Image Credit: FahrulH7‚ Shutterstock Health and Conditions The Kucing Malaysia is still a relatively new cat‚ which means we don’t really know of any hereditary or congenital conditions that are more likely to affect this breed. However‚ there are some conditions that cats‚ in general‚ are prone to. Look for signs of the following conditions. Minor Conditions Dental disease Fleas Gastrointestinal problems Serious Conditions Obesity Weight loss Heart murmur Kidney disease Male vs Female Male cats tend to be a little larger than their female counterparts‚ both in terms of height and weight. Although it does depend on the individual character rather than gender‚ some owners claim males to be more sociable and affectionate. Females are more independent.   3 Little-Known Facts About the Kucing Malaysia 1. Malaysia’s Only Official Cat Breed Despite 60% of households in Malaysia claiming to keep cats as pets‚ the Kucing Malaysia is the country’s first indigenous cat breed. Popular breeds regularly kept as pets include the British Shorthair‚ Bengal‚ and Persian breeds. 2. A New Breed The breed is Malaysia’s first official cat breed and is only recognized as a breed in Malaysia. Its popularity has not yet spread outside Malaysia‚ and it is a young breed. The idea for an official Malaysian breed was first mooted by Mrs. Alva Uddin of the International World Body‚ and breeding began. Standards have yet to be formalized in other countries and the Kucing Malaysia is considered a developmental breed. 3. The Kucing Malaysia Can Make a Great Pet The Kucing is considered a friendly and affectionate breed. It is also muscular and athletic‚ which means it makes a good pet because it will bond with its owners and will also play and have fun with people of all ages. Image Credit: Catster   Final Thoughts The Kucing Malaysia is the first and only official breed from Malaysia. It is a friendly and affectionate breed that makes a good family pet. It is also energetic and playful. It will bond with its owners. Not yet recognized by cat fancier associations in other countries‚ the Kucking Malaysia is an experimental breed that can be very difficult to find elsewhere in the world. Georgia State Senator Proposes Committee to Investigate Fani Willis

A Republican Georgia state senator introduced legislation Monday to establish a committee that would allow the Legislature to investigate Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis‚ according to a press release. Republican state Sen. Greg Dolezal’s bill would establish a Senate Special Committee on Investigations‚ a committee of nine members who have the power to call individuals to testify under oath‚ according to the announcement. Dolezal pitched the legislation as a solution to “the multitude of accusations surrounding Ms. Willis‚” who was accused of awarding her alleged lover‚ Nathan Wade‚ “lucrative” contracts to work as special prosecutor on the case against former President Donald Trump and benefiting from it when he took her on vacations using money he earned from his position. “Today‚ in response to a wave of concerning reports and court filings regarding District Attorney Fani Willis of the Atlanta Judicial Circuit‚ I am calling for the establishment of the Senate Special Committee on Investigations‚” Dolezal said in a statement. “The multitude of accusations surrounding Ms. Willis‚ spanning from allegations of prosecutorial misconduct to questions about the use of public funds and accusations of an unprofessional relationship‚ underscores the urgency for a thorough and impartial examination.” Wade has been paid nearly $654‚000 from the District Attorney’s Office since 2022‚ according to county records. EU Votes on Resolution To List “Hate Speech” as a Crime

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. As part of the growing support for censorship within the EU‚ the EU Parliament has cast their votes for a resolution‚ regarding making so-called “hate speech” a crime throughout the Union. The decision‚ which critics have likened to Orwell’s “Big Brother‚” is set to redefine the landscape of freedom of speech within the European Union. The move has garnered substantial attention due to its potential impact on individual liberties. Critics argue that this could lead to overreach and the suppression of free speech. Yet‚ the EU Parliament remains firm in its stance‚ asserting that this radical change is a crucial step in combating hate and is plowing ahead. Before the resolution‚ Maite Pagazaurtundúa (Spain)‚ rapporteur for the report and Member of the Committee on Civil Liberties‚ Justice and Home Affairs‚ said: “The current EU legal framework only covers hate speech and hate crimes on some bases‚ but there is currently no common‚ comprehensive legal definition at Union level. With the new social dynamics‚ the normalization of hate evolves very quickly and we must protect ourselves as a society and protect people who are attacked‚ persecuted‚ and harassed. Radical networks and extreme polarization are a favorable environment for increasing these behaviors that violate fundamental rights. With this report we ask the Council to give the green light to legislate against hate crime and hate speeches in European terms‚ always in accordance with the principle of proportionality and guaranteeing freedom of expression for citizens.” From The European Conservative: “The document lays down two primary goals: including hate speech among the EU crimes specified in Article 83(1) TFEU which lists “particularly serious crime[s] with cross-border dimensions”—such as terrorism‚ human trafficking‚ drug and arms trafficking‚ money laundering‚ and organized crime—and are subject to EU-wide minimum rules regarding definitions and penalties. According to the official explanation‚ hate speech deserves the same label because it’s so serious that not only affects an individual or a community “but also society as a whole‚ by undermining the foundations of the EU‚” while social media instantly gives it a “cross-border dimension” as well. “The second goal underscored in the resolution is to extend the definition of hate speech and hate crimes to cover several additional victim categories. Currently‚ EU laws define them as hatred only toward a specific race‚ skin color‚ religion‚ nationality‚ or ethnicity‚ which leftist lawmakers argued is not nearly enough in today’s world. “Therefore‚ the document calls for extending the definition to ‘sex‚ sexual orientation‚ gender‚ gender identity‚ gender expression‚ sex characteristics‚ age‚ disability and any other fundamental characteristic.’ Absent an objective definition‚ it’s easy to imagine the last one functioning as a blank check to cover whatever anyone might be offended by.” The post EU Votes on Resolution To List “Hate Speech” as a Crime appeared first on Reclaim The Net.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino Says “Free Speech” Ends at “Hate Speech”

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. X continues to sit on two chairs and send mixed signals regarding the company’s stance on free speech. A new blog post penned this week by X Corp CEO Linda Yaccarino goes into this‚ at once claiming that society must “empower people to express its thoughts” – but also‚ that the line must be drawn at “hate” and “hate speech.” Considering the platform’s long and difficult history with suppressing free speech‚ well documented in the Twitter Files‚ and the fact terms like “hate speech” not to mention “misinformation” are so often used simply to cover up straight-up censorship‚ Yaccarino’s intent here can be seen as confusing. All the more so since the blog post is entitled‚ “Safeguarding Information Independence and Combating Hate Speech” only to be followed by the subtitle‚ “Building an Indispensable Global Town Square.” This is particularly interesting since it’s an admission of sorts that X is indeed a (digital) town square. The argument that this is the case with all major social sites has been used for a long time to prove that speech there should be protected under the US Constitution’s First Amendment‚ regardless of the companies being privately-owned. The term “modern public square” as it pertains to social networks is found in the 2017 US Supreme Court opinion in Packingham v. North Carolina. Related: How the term “hate speech” has become a mainline internet censorship tool And‚ another thing that the US Supreme Court has determined is that there is no “hate speech” exception to the First Amendment (Matal v. Tam‚ also from 2017). So – what is Yaccarino (i.e.‚ X) doing here‚ evoking both free speech‚ “the global town square” – and‚ “combating hate speech”? Trying to eat the cake and have it too – or pacify many powerful detractors of X in these particularly “sensitive” campaign times? First‚ she praises the need for “information independence – the free exchange of ideas‚ information and knowledge through freedom of speech” as a precondition to society’s progress. It goes on – “Heavy content filtering practices of some platforms and media entities have altered people’s understanding of the truth.” And on. “We’re seeing things we held as true being openly challenged. Control‚ censorship‚ and information centralization holds us back – while greater access to information propels us forward and fuels positive change‚” writes Yaccarino. But then: “For all the good‚ there’s also a point when information independence crosses a line too‚ and that’s hate speech‚” the blog post states. It seems to be fairly narrowly “motivated‚” the context being Elon Musk’s address at the European Jewish Association’s symposium‚ with the latest major flare-up of hostilities in the Middle East looming large in the background. Then Yaccarino switches into full Big Tech/legacy media mode: “It’s all our duty to combat hate speech – in our communities and on every platform. Because freedom of speech and safety can and must coexist. And the future of democracy and the global economy depends on it.” Finally‚ there’s two messages: “Let’s make up our own minds – because we can handle the truth. Let’s fight hate with kindness and understanding.” At least she didn’t say‚ “let’s fight it with more censorship.” And‚ sometimes sitting bad times out on two chairs is the only clever thing to (try to) do.
