Doomsday Clock Stays Closest To Midnight It’s Ever Been For Second Year

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has announced that the Doomsday Clock will be kept at 90 seconds to midnight for a second year – which is still the closest to "Doomsday" it's ever been. Since its inception in the late 1940s‚ the clock has been a symbol to reflect the state of the world and our proximity to midnight or "Doomsday" signifying the annihilation of our species - and it has been ticking forward dramatically in the last few years.“Make no mistake: resetting the Clock at 90 seconds to midnight is not an indication that the world is stable. Quite the opposite‚” said Rachel Bronson‚ PhD‚ president and CEO of the Bulletin‚ in a statement. “It’s urgent for governments and communities around the world to act. And the Bulletin remains hopeful—and inspired—in seeing the younger generations leading the charge.”  This year's announcement is not a surprise. A lack of commitment to tackling the unfolding climate crisis resulting in 2023 being the hottest year record and working to build preparedness for the next pandemic are still global issues. There are unfolding humanitarian crises across the world while military conflicts continue too with the Russian war in Ukraine about to enter its third year. The last few months have also seen the Israeli invasion of Gaza following the Hamas attack of October 7 that so far has resulted in the death of over 25‚000 Palestinian civilians and a daily death rate exceeding any other 21st-century conflict. The Bulletin also listed the deterioration of agreements to reduce nuclear weapons and the threat of biological weapons as a major threat‚ as well as the continued spread of misinformation on the internet‚ stoked by politicians‚ media‚ and pundits. The unregulated development of cyber technologies that might exacerbate the problem adds to the current concern about the future of humanity. Why Does The Doomsday Clock Move? The clock is moved based on the opinions and expertise of the members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Since 1947‚ the Doomsday Clock has represented the ability of human-made threats to lead to our extinction. It's not surprising it was established at the dawn of the Cold War‚ when the US and the USSR raced to build as many nuclear weapons as possible. An atomic war today‚ as then‚ would certainly spell doom; even a relatively small conflict fought with nuclear weapons could kill tens of millions in just a few hours. Following such a war‚ it's estimated that 5 billion people would die from the subsequent famine. In 1947‚ the clock was initially set at 7 minutes to midnight. The furthest from midnight it has ever been set was in 1991‚ following the easing of tensions between the former Soviet Union and the United States‚ the reunification of Germany‚ and the signing of the first Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. It was set at 11:43 pm – 17 minutes to midnight. So‚ what are the criteria the Bulletin members must ask themselves to make their decisions? They must answer just two questions: is humanity safer than last year‚ and is humanity safer than it has been over the last 76 years from human-made threats? It has been set at less than two minutes to midnight for the last several years‚ reaching the 90-second mark for the first time last year. This year‚ the clock – and the threat – stays the same.“For decades‚ scientists have been warning us of the dangers facing humankind‚” Bill Nye‚ who participated in the 2024 Doomsday Clock announcement‚ said. “We could be facing catastrophe unless we better manage the technologies we’ve created. It’s time to act.”

People Are Asking Why Do We Feel Acceleration‚ But Not Constant Speed?

People Are Asking Why Do We Feel Acceleration‚ But Not Constant Speed?

As a science website‚ it's easy to get bogged down in questions like "Is there life on Enceladus?" and "Where are all the aliens?"‚ when people are struggling with more basic (but fun!) questions like "Why can't we power our cars with magnets?" and "If you fell from a skyscraper on the Moon‚ would you die or otherwise get badly injured?"Another basic question people have been asking: why do we feel acceleration‚ but not velocity? One person recently effectively asked this in the "Physics Is Fun" Facebook group."While traveling in a flight which is flying at a height of 30000 feet [9‚144 meters]‚ we feel as if we are sitting stationary (unmoved)‚" the Facebook user wrote. "How come it gives us such a feeling when the aircraft is cruising at 700 [kilometers] per hour [435 miles per hour]?"The short answer is that you only feel a force when a force is being applied to you. This only happens during acceleration‚ when the plane's engines push the plane forward. You feel that push via the seat‚ as you are accelerating. When you reach the cruising speed‚ however‚ force is not being applied to you via your seat. You are in a state of inertia‚ or the tendency for objects in motion to remain in motion in a straight line at the same velocity unless another force acts upon it.            Since the plane is remaining at the same speed‚ you carry on at that speed unless something acts upon you‚ like speeding up or slowing down of the aircraft. An easy way to think about this is to imagine what would happen if the plane were to suddenly stop while you were not wearing your seatbelt as the flight attendant advised. The answer is that you would continue your journey forward that you've been set upon until you are rapidly decelerated to rest by (for example) the chair in front of you. If they were to swing a left or right‚ of course‚ you would feel the centrifugal force‚ which isn't real‚ but let's not complicate things for now.If you were to feel speed and not velocity of a plane or car‚ that would be really‚ really weird‚ considering that the car is only going along at 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour) while the planet orbits the Sun at 107‚000 kilometers per hour (66‚500 miles per hour)‚ and the Sun hurtles through the galaxy at 828‚000 kilometers per hour (514‚500 miles per hour). Let's just say it's good thing that we only feel acceleration.

Fox’s Doocy Battles KJP on Abortion‚ Border‚ Gets Backup from Daily Caller‚ EWTN

Monday’s Doocy Time was off to a raring start as‚ after some banter with the ever-inept Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wondering where Doocy had been (since his last appearance on January 11)‚ Doocy cut to the case on Biden’s mental fitness‚ the border crisis‚ and a simple question Democrats refuse to answer: When‚ if at all‚ does President Biden believe abortions should be limited? Thankfully‚ he had help on the border from the Daily Caller’s Reagan Reese and on abortion from EWTN producer Toby Capion‚ who had an equally important question: Does President Biden believe unborn children have rights? But Doocy first led with the age question: “Karine‚ why do you think it is that more and more people polled feel like‚ over time‚ President Biden is getting less and less mentally sharp?” Asked to cite which poll‚ Doocy relayed that “ABC has President Biden’s rating for health since May down five points and for mental sharpness down four points.” DOOCY TIME: “Karine‚ why do you think it is that more and more people pooled feel like‚ over time‚ President Biden is getting less and less mentally sharp?” KJP: “Which poll is this?” Doocy: “ABC has President Biden's rating for health since May down five points and for mental… pic.twitter.com/tpIT4zcV4b — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) January 22‚ 2024 Jean-Pierre’s answer ignored it and went on a bizarre aside asserting without evidence that Donald Trump is his favorite President (click “expand”): JEAN-PIERRE: You know‚ I have to say that’s a little confusing for me‚ because if you look at what this President has done the last three years‚ historical pieces of legislation — right — When it comes to bipartisan infrastructure deal‚ Many presidents before‚ like your favorite President had said that — you tease — DOOCY: Who’s my favorite president? JEAN-PIERRE: Why don’t you — why don’t we let the American people guess‚ but — DOOCY: No‚ no‚ no‚ no. JEAN-PIERRE: — no‚ no‚ no. Let me finish. Let me finish. Let me finish. You asked me a question. I’m gonna —  DOOCY: I don’t understand what you’re getting at. JEAN-PIERRE: — let me let me finish. Let me finish. Let me finish.  And you’ll — you’ll guess who I’m talking about who used to say infrastructure week! Infrastructure week — which was a punchline — became a joke. And now we are seeing infrastructure decade because of this President. There’s the Chips and Science Act‚ right? There is the Inflation Reduction Act. These are legislation [sic] that is going to have a difference for generations to come‚ right? And so this is something that this president has done.  That’s pretty sharp for this president to have been able to do that. Let’s look at the economy. The economy — now — unemployment is under four percent‚ 14 million jobs created. The economy is in a better place than when it was when he walked in. That’s just a fact. That’s just the data and we’re seeing consumer sentiment is going up and we saw just in December how — how people spent more and we hadn’t seen that in some time. Som I think you needed a President like President Biden to get that type of stuff done. Someone who’s had Senate experience someone who was the VP — Vice President und — under President Obama‚ obviously and someone who has been a pretty effective President over the last three years. DOOCY: Okay. Doocy pivoted to immigration and a disturbing revelation in the dark-blue‚ rich‚ white D.C. suburb Fairfax County‚ Virginia that law enforcement there “ignored an ICE detainer” and thus “released an illegal immigrants from Honduras who’s charged with sexually assaulting a Virginia minor and production of sexual abuse material.” “Doesn’t that go to show that‚ as record numbers of people appear at the border‚ you guys have no idea what kind of people are coming into this country‚” he asked. Jean-Pierre insisted this was an example of why Biden’s “having negotiations with the Senate‚ Senators‚ Republicans and Democrats...to deal with...border security” (even though the White House is only there in a supporting role) and why he “on day one‚ put forward a comprehensive immigration plan...Congress didn’t do anything about” (which was little more than a liberal wishlist). Skipping ahead‚ Reese followed up on the border with another simple question that Jean-Pierre flubbed: “Biden admitted Friday that the border isn’t secure. Does he have any plans to visit the southern border before the election?” .@DailyCaller’s @ReaganReese_: “Biden admitted Friday that the border isn’t secure. Does he have any plans to visit the southern border before the election?” KJP: “The President was in — visited the border recently.” Reese: “In January.” KJP: “Yeah‚ well‚ that was — that was a… pic.twitter.com/ceT8F4hgoN — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) January 22‚ 2024 Jean-Pierre responded that he went “recently‚” but Reese pointed out it was “in January” as in a full year ago. Of course‚ Jean-Pierre shrugged off that difference and insisted a year ago was still “recently.” Reese pressed again: “In December 2023‚ [t]here were 300‚000 migrant encounters‚ which is the highest month ever on records‚ so how bad does the border crisis for Biden to take a trip back?” Jean-Pierre chose to ignore this and instead doubled down on his funding request (a classic throw-money-at-the-problem solution) and Senate negotiations. Back to Doocy‚ his third and final question touched on abortion: “[H]ow many weeks into a pregnancy does he think abortion should still be illegal?” Acknowledging this question has come up before (September 23‚ 2022 to be exact)‚ she struck a similar milquetoast tone that‚ in turn‚ indicated President Biden supports abortion‚ at a minimum‚ up until birth and falsely claimed Americans support him (click “expand”): So‚ you’ve asked me this question before. I’ve been very clear. The President’s been very clear. We want to see the protections in Roe. We want to see Roe become the law of the land. That’s what the President wants to see. That’s what the President believes in and let me be very clear here. It’s not some sort of shift that the President is making. Majority of Americans want to see their protections protected by their by — by this — by — by the — by the folks who are here in Washington‚ D. C in Congress by this President and the Vice President. That’s the President’s standing with majority of Americans. We saw that in the 2023 midterm elections‚ and we saw that in 2022‚ not midterm election‚ but the 2023 elections and 2022 midterm elections.  They’ve been very clear. We need to stand for freedoms‚ for make sure women have the right to make their own decision — personal decisions on their body‚ on their health care. That’s where a majority of Americans are. Guess what? Republican officials? They’re not. They’re — they’re not majority of Americans‚ so the President’s gonna continue to stand with the majority of Americans on this. Capion had the last back-and-forth of the afternoon‚ starting with a rupping of Doocy’s question about limits on abortion. She doubled down on her meally-mouthed take‚ adding she wouldn’t “get into it” any further since “Roe...was a constitutional law.” Um‚ what? Capion struck more pay dirt: “He also said he wants to be a President for all Americans‚ but how in this situation‚ with this issue‚ does he best represents the pro-life Americans who want to see more unborn babies saved?” EWTN’s @TobyCapion: “Karine‚ you said to Peter that the President wants to see Roe restored. It’s still not clear to me‚ though‚ if he supports the late term abortion restrictions that were included in Roe?” KJP: “I — well‚ if it's in Roe‚ then that's what he wants to see. I'm… pic.twitter.com/KOW4E6eX9z — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) January 22‚ 2024 After she reemphasized her claim Biden and the “majority of Americans” desire “women” being able to “make those deeply‚ deeply personal decisions”‚ Capion wrapped with a question more reporters would be asking if the profession wasn’t so addicted to baby-killing: “Do those unborn babies have any rights‚ then?” Disgustingly‚ Jean-Pierre scoffed at the notion the unborn are more than nuisances: I’m not going to get into that question. I’ve been very‚ very clear about this where majority of Americans stand and that’s what matters‚ but the President wants to see Roe become the law of the land‚ and that’s what he’s going to continue to asked Congress to do. Doesn’t that go to show that‚ as record numbers of people appear at the border‚ you guys have no idea what kind of people are coming into this country? JEAN-PIERRE: Let me just say — first of all‚ this is why the President is having negotiations with the Senate‚ Senators‚ Republicans and Democrats — right — for the past couple of weeks to deal with what’s going on at the border security — right — as it — as it relates to border security. This is why the President‚ on day one‚ put forward a comprehensive immigration plan that — about — more than three years now‚ Congress didn’t do anything about‚ but he’s appreciative that we’re having this conversation in the Senate. We’ve de — we’ve deployed additional troops and federal agents to the border who have‚ by the way‚ returned more than 482‚000 individuals since May. That’s the — that’s what we’ve been able to do. We’ve led the largest expansion of lawful pathways and that — we haven’t seen in some time. The President continues to have diplomatic conversation with Mexico‚ who have actually taken — taken actions to deal with — the situation. There’s more work to do.  There’s more work to do. We understand that. We have said that. You’ve heard that from the president on Friday. We understand that there is more work to do. We need more resources. We need more funding‚ which is why we’re having these negotiations on the Hill. But Republicans in the Senate is working with us. Republicans in the House are trying to get in the way‚ so it’s up to them. Are they going to help? Are they going to actually deal with an issue or continue to move forward in a political stunt? DOOCY: And‚ as President Biden tries to make the national conversation more about reproductive rights‚ abortion‚ how many weeks into a pregnancy does he think abortion should still be illegal? JEAN-PIERRE: So‚ you’ve asked me this question before. I’ve been very clear. The President’s been very clear. We want to see the protections in Roe. We want to see Roe become the law of the land. (....) 2:03 p.m. Eastern REAGAN REESE: Biden admitted Friday that the border isn’t secure. Does he have any plans to visit the southern border before the election?” JEAN-PIERRE: The President was in — visited the border recently. REESE: In January. JEAN-PIERRE: Yeah‚ well‚ that was — that was a year ago. He’s been there. REESE: In December 2023‚ There were 300‚000 migrant encounters‚ which is the highest month ever on records‚ so how bad does the border crisis for Biden to take a trip back? JEAN-PIERRE: So just to reiterate what I just said seconds ago‚ the President has been to the border. He’s visited the border. He saw for himself. He spoke to law enforcement. He saw exactly what goes on at the border. The President understands what’s going on at the border‚ which is why he included in his national security supplemental — right — which is again a request that is‚ when — when you feel like there’s an emergency‚ you make that supplemental request‚ which is what the President did‚ it included border security. It included‚ obviously‚ Ukraine and Israel. And it is incredibly important‚ which is why he continues to push for it‚ and you’re seeing those conversations happening in the Senate a bipartisan way — a bipartisan agreement and the President’s very thankful to that.  And so‚ I’m going to leave that there. He’s taking this very seriously. Remember day one — day one‚ he put forward an immigration‚ comprehensive immigration legislation. (....) 2:07 p.m. Eastern TOBY CAPION: Karine‚ you said to Peter that the President wants to see Roe restored. It’s still not clear to me‚ though‚ if he supports the late term abortion restrictions that were included in Roe? JEAN-PIERRE: I — well‚ if it’s in Roe‚ then that’s what he wants to see. I’m just not going to get into it. It’s whatever is in Roe — what Roe when it was a constitutional law — that’s what the President wants to see restored. He’s been very clear about that. CAPION: He also said he wants to be a President for all Americans‚ but how in this situation‚ with this issue‚ does he best represents the pro-life Americans who want to see more unborn babies saved? JEAN-PIERRE: What I will say is majority of Americans — majority of Americans wants to see their rights protected‚ wants to see women have their rights protected‚ wants to be able to — wants — want women to be able to make those deeply‚ deeply personal decisions on their bodies‚ on their own‚ not politicians. That’s what majority of Americans want to see. And so‚ the President is going to stand with majority of Americans on this issue. CAPION: Do those unborn babies have any rights‚ then? JEAN-PIERRE: I’m not going to get into that specific — I’m not going to get into that question. I’ve been very‚ very clear about this where majority of Americans stand and that’s what matters‚ but the President wants to see Roe become the law of the land‚ and that’s what he’s going to continue to asked Congress to do.

Learning to trust technology

Early man wielded fire‚ turning night into a time of brightness and warmth. When he held an axe‚ the thicket became passable‚ shapeable. And so the story has progressed‚ as the tools humans use have changed‚ so has the world itself been shaped by what is possible through their use. The globe shrank with the expansion of railways‚ and in the spread of their web-like tracks across the landscape‚ even mountains became moveable by explosives and excavators. Now it seems the entire world fits in the palm of your hand‚ navigable with your thumbs and an internet connection. Our age is one of empowered discontent. We see the obstacles nature imposes‚ and instead of accepting them‚ we defy them. We change the world on a whim‚ and our lives are often better for it. But we’re also shaped by the tools we use. Technology reshapes the relationship between the subject using it and the world in which that subject exists. Technology is culture. And‚ centrally‚ technology is more than merely a tool or a means to an end; according to Martin Heidegger‚ it’s a mode of being in the world. It morphs the actual world merely by allowing us to engage with the world differently; in a way‚ it’s akin to growing new appendages or organs‚ like wings or gills. If it makes your skin crawl to think of yourself as inextricably conjoined with your toothbrush‚ refrigerator‚ or smartphone‚ then you get it. But to resist here is to place undue distance between yourself and some of the things I guarantee are close to your heart that have shaped your values and enriched you without much conflict. For example‚ written language and its storage in the form of books and drives amount to extending human memory beyond natural limits. At this point‚ we can’t and shouldn’t want to hide from this reality. All the beautiful poems‚ religious musings‚ scientific screeds‚ and practical manuals in the world are‚ in a real sense‚ technological extensions of us. Music‚ movies‚ community buildings‚ the farmer’s tractor‚ your grandmother’s insulin pump‚ and your great-uncle’s favorite muscle car are all under this aegis. And the world without many of these things would be colder‚ emptier‚ and inhuman. If you could fly and breathe water‚ a cliff or body of water would have an entirely new meaning. Instead of boundaries‚ you’d see just another terrain to traverse. And in this line of reasoning‚ in a roundabout way‚ natural resources have been translated into meaning warmth (a log to burn)‚ health (e.g.‚ steel into scalpels‚ bark into medicine)‚ shelter (turning concrete‚ steel‚ timber‚ and the like into homes)‚ and electricity (e.g.‚ burning fossil fuels or creating photovoltaic batteries‚ etc.)‚ to name a few. But‚ as is obvious to those paying any attention‚ the rosy regard of technology-as-all-benevolent is misguided. It’s easy to allow technology to cause us to see everything as “means‚ ends‚ causes‚ and effects.” This way of being is dangerous and dehumanizing‚ and the overreach of technologists’ creations merely because something is possible leads to awe-inspiring blunders‚ like Amazon’s Alexa committing an AI necromancy on dead relatives. To borrow once more from Heidegger‚ the way through this entanglement with tools is “releasement” (Gelassenheit)‚ an attitude of saying both “yes” and “no” to technology. Releasement involves accepting that technology is unavoidable while refusing to allow it to pull us into its depths. To quote Karl Jaspers‚ in the face of this great technological artifice we all were born into‚ the default is that one “accepts life as mere existence and allows everything to be decided for him.” Technology should serve us‚ not the other way around. And that means we need to push for more tech we can trust. This is more difficult than wholesale rejection of the whole post-Industrial Revolution project. But it’s the only realistic way forward.

Terrifying video captures moment monster wave blasts Army garrison door to smithereens

A U.S. Army base in the Marshall Islands was hit over the weekend by a rogue element: the Pacific Ocean. Massive waves swept U.S. Army Garrison Kwajalein on the island of Roi-Namur Saturday night‚ wreaking destruction and prompting the evacuation of all "non-mission personnel." While there were reports of minor injuries‚ there were fortunately no fatalities. Col. Andrew Morgan‚ commander of the garrison‚ said in a statement‚ "Last night a series of weather-driven waves resulted in significant ocean water inundation on Roi-Namur. Initial indications are all personnel are accounted for; however‚ TEAM KWAJ leaders are triple checking." Scuba instructor Erik D. Hanson captured the fateful moment that a succession of large waves powered through the base. Floodwaters can be seen rushing through the exterior corridor at the outset of the video while would-be diners‚ still ostensibly dry‚ look on with awe. A man‚ presumably Hanson‚ can be heard yelling off-camera‚ "Keep the door closed! Keep the door closed!" The ocean does not heed the cautioner's counsel. Instead‚ it bashes individuals against the dining room door with a surge several feet high‚ then sends the splintered door flying into the room. After a brief respite‚ Hanson peers outside‚ spotting another surge. "Coming in!" he yells as a debris-laden wall of murky water pushes toward the rear of the kitchen. Another man notes the latest wave had to have been at least five feet high while a woman near the back of the room exclaims‚ "We gotta get outta here!" The waters appear to kill the power‚ leaving the would-be diners soaked and in the dark. Hanson later noted that the waves struck "right after low tide at a 1.2ft tide so could have been worse. Very very thankful no one was seriously injured." See on Instagram The Daily Mail reported that one person suffered injuries to the lower body and was taken to the clinic on Kwajalein Island‚ but is now in stable condition‚ according to Army Public Affairs Officer Mike Brantley. The garrison indicated that 80 residents of Roi-Namur were ultimately escorted to the Public Works Warehouse where they received hot meals and room keys for their temporary homes on Kwajalein. An initial aerial assessment on Sunday found that there was flooding on at least one-third of the northwest side of the island‚ including on the airport's runway and through various buildings. Rocks and coral were reportedly carried onto the island by the surge‚ contributing to the need to keep the airports temporarily closed. The full extent of the damage is still being examined. Roi-Namur is a critical part of the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site and home to various radar systems. According to the Army‚ the test site "is a vital national asset providing live-fire developmental and operational flight testing of offensive and defensive missile systems‚ equatorial satellite launch capability‚ space object tracking and characterization‚ and atmospheric science research."
