Proxima Centauri B is the closest exoplanet to Earth. It is an Earth-mass world right in the habitable zone of a red dwarf star just 4 light-years from Earth. It receives about 65% of the energy Earth gets from the Sun‚ and depending on its evolutionary history could have oceans of water and an atmosphere rich with oxygen. Our closest neighbor could harbor life‚ or it could be a dry rock‚ but is an excellent target in the search for alien life. There’s just one catch. Our usual methods for detecting biosignatures won’t work with Proxima Centauri B. Most exoplanets are discovered through the transit method‚ where a planet regularly passes in front of its star from our point of view. We see the recurring dip in a star’s brightness‚ and we know the planet is there. For transiting exoplanets‚ we can look for changes in the spectrum of the star as the planet transits. Some of the starlight passes through an exoplanet’s atmosphere‚ and some wavelengths get absorbed by the atmosphere. By looking at the pattern of absorption‚ we can fingerprint different molecules. This is how we’ve detected the presence of water‚ carbon dioxide‚ and other molecules in exoplanet atmospheres. But Proxima Centauri B isn’t a transiting planet. It was discovered by a different method known as Doppler spectroscopy. When we look at the light from Proxima Centauri‚ we can see its spectrum redshift and blueshift slightly over time. The gravitational pull of Proxima Centauri B makes the star wobble slightly. So we know the exoplanet is there‚ and have a good idea of its size and mass‚ but since it doesn’t transit its star we can’t observe its atmospheric absorption spectrum. But a new study argues there is another way we might find life‚ using the reflection of starlight off the planet’s atmosphere. In principle the idea is simple. Rather than looking for light passing directly through the atmosphere‚ look instead for light that has reflected off the planet directly. We’ve done this for planets such as Mars and the outer planets‚ which don’t transit the Sun‚ so we could do it for exoplanets as well. The problem is that reflected starlight from a planet is tiny compared to the radiance of the star itself. Detecting the reflected light of a planet is like capturing the light of a firefly flittering near the edge of a spotlight. So astronomers have used masks to block the central brilliance of a star and see its family of planets. We have done this to directly observe large gas planets orbiting stars‚ but not Earth-sized worlds. How different mask designs reveal the orbit of Proxima Centauri B (red dashed circle). Credit: Vaughan‚ et al In this work‚ the authors look at the potential for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT)‚ currently under construction in Northern Chile. Specifically‚ they consider the High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph (HARMONI)‚ which will be able to capture high-resolution spectra on the ELT. The team simulated observations of Proxima Centauri using the masking effect to capture the light of its exoplanet. Is it possible for HARMONI to capture enough high-resolution data to discover biogenic molecules? They found that the answer is no. In its current proposed configuration‚ the mask configuration is too large and will block most of the light from the exoplanet. But they also found that the configuration could be modified in such a way that the atmosphere of Proxima Centauri B could be studied. It isn’t simply a matter of making the mask smaller‚ since that would allow more starlight to reach the ELT‚ which would wash out the exoplanet data. Instead‚ the team proposes making detailed simulations to optimize a design for Proxima Centauri B. The modifications would be neither easy nor cheap‚ but they could be well worth it. As our closest exoplanet neighbor‚ Proxima Centauri B is on the short list of worlds we will first visit as we send probes beyond our solar system. If it does have life‚ that would put it at the top of the list. Imagine remotely flying a drone or small aircraft from a great distance and loosing contact with it during flight. You’d likely assume the worst‚ that your aircraft was probably laying in a crashed heap in some remote location. That’s what engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory went through with the beloved Ingenuity helicopter on Mars‚ millions of miles away. During a recent quick pop-up flight that was supposed to last just 32 seconds‚ Ingenuity lost communications before it touched back down. The engineers back on Earth had no idea if the little helicopter landed safely or not. Communications were lost on January 18 when the tiny autonomous rotorcraft was flown on a short vertical flight to test its systems after an unplanned early landing during its previous flight‚ NASA reported in a status update. For some reason‚ the communications link was severed between Ingenuity and the Perseverance rover‚ which relays data between the helicopter and Earth during the flights. Data received showed that Ingenuity had climbed to its assigned maximum altitude of 12 meters (40 feet)‚ but then the data link terminated early‚ prior to touchdown. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech But thankfully‚ after engineers had worked around the clock‚ on late on January 20 communications were able to be reestablished between the helicopter and rover‚ with engineers able to determine the helicopter was “power-positive” and sitting upright on Mars. The team is now running further diagnostic checks‚ and commanding Ingenuity to take photos of its location on the surface to help  pinpoint its location‚ and performing a spin test. “Ginny is back in contact!‚” JPL Director Laurie Leshin posted on X. “Thanks to our team for working the issue so quickly and effectively. Still need to understand more about what happened. After far more flights than anticipated‚ no matter what‚ the #MarsHelicopter has been an extraordinary success!” NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover took a selfie with the Ingenuity helicopter‚ seen here about 13 feet (3.9 meters) from the rover. JPL did say that during the flight‚ Perseverance was out of line-of-sight with Ingenuity‚ and after communications were lost‚ the team considered driving the rover closer for a visual inspection. They did use the rover “to perform long-duration listening sessions for Ingenuity’s signal.” This was Ingenuity’s 72nd flight at the Red Planet – which is incredible given that only four flights were planned for the plucky little helicopter‚ the first aircraft to perform a powered‚ controlled extraterrestrial flight. But since becoming operational on April 19‚ 2021‚ it has blown away expectations‚ now completing 72 flights. Ingenuity operates in a harsh environment that no aircraft has ever flown in before. Mars is extremely cold and dry‚ and Mars’ very thin atmosphere has only about 1% the density of Earth’s. The thin atmosphere makes lift more difficult to generate‚ although the gravity is weaker‚ which helps. There’s also the time delay in communications between Mars and Earth which adds a layer of complexity to every endeavor. If we are practical‚ we realize that one day‚ Ingenuity will fly its last flight‚ never to be heard from again. But that day is not today. Former South Carolina Republican Governor Nikki Haley punched back during a contentious Tuesday morning interview on “Fox &; Friends‚” claiming that the media was attempting to run over her in their efforts to “coronate” former President Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee. She also asked whether Haley was concerned about the fact that she was polling 40 points behind Trump in her home state‚ where the primary vote will be held in one month’s time. Two inmates at an Arkansas county jail‚ including one being held on murder charges‚ have escaped. Jatonia Bryant and Noah Roush were discovered missing Monday night‚ around 10:30 p.m.‚ the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) said in a press release. The two escaped from the Dub Brassell Adult Detention Center and may have broken free within the previous 48 hours. It is unclear how long it had been before they were discovered missing. It is also unclear how they escaped. Roush‚ 22‚ is a white male‚ 6’2” tall‚ and weighs about 180 pounds with a scar on the right side of his head. He was being held on probable cause for residential burglary and theft of property. He is also the suspect in a homicide. Joy Behar spent a few moments on Tuesday begging former South Carolina GOP Governor Nikki Haley to stay in the 2024 race for the Republican presidential nomination — if only because she thought it would prove “annoying” to the frontrunner‚ former President Donald Trump. Behar made the comments during a Tuesday broadcast of the ABC midday talk show “The View” and argued that Haley made Trump appear to be crazier by comparison — something that she viewed as a positive development. “The more she stays in‚ the more demented he looks.
