iPadOS 18.2 beta 3 now available with Genmoji and other Apple Intelligence features

Today, Apple released iPadOS 18.2 beta 3. The company continues to move forward on the iPadOS testing cycle and plans to launch this upcoming software update to users early next month. This build should improve general stability while continuing to master the new Apple Intelligence features. These are the main features available with iPadOS 18.2 beta 3: Genmoji: Create custom emojis by combining two figures; users can type a prompt like “monkey with pink hat” to make an entirely new emoji; here’s how to use it; Image Playground: Users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. This app is built right into apps like Messages and is also available in a dedicated app; having trouble with the waitlist? Check this; Image Wand: “Rough sketches can be turned into delightful images, and users can even select empty space to create an image using context from the surrounding area” in the Notes app; Create Images expansion: Another Apple Intelligence feature available with iPadOS 18.2 beta is the ability to create an image when you highlight text in the Notes app; ChatGPT integration: When you feel Apple Intelligence isn’t enough, you can allow ChatGPT to access Writing Tools and other features for a better response; if you are tired of Apple Intelligence asking to confirm every prompt, do this. Despite these Apple Intelligence features, it’s unclear what else Apple is bringing with iPadOS 18.2. With iOS 18.2, the company is testing an all-new Mail experience. However, it might never be released to iPad users. Here’s what Apple says about this upgrade:  Mail is introducing new ways for users to manage their inboxes. On-device categorization organizes and sorts incoming emails into Primary for personal and time-sensitive emails, Transactions for confirmations and receipts, Updates for news and social notifications, and Promotions for marketing emails and coupons. Mail also features a new digest view that pulls together all of the relevant emails from a business, allowing users to quickly scan for what’s important at the moment. BGR will let you know if we find anything new in today’s iPadOS 18.2 beta. Apple is also releasing the third testing versions of iOS 18.2 and macOS 15.2. macOS 15.2 beta 3 now available with more Apple Intelligence features

As the testing cycle follows, Apple just released macOS 15.2 beta 3. This upcoming software update adds new Apple Intelligence features while Apple works on improving the system's general stability. So far, macOS Sequoia 15.2 beta 3 includes the following Apple Intelligence feature: Image Playground: Users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. This app is built right into apps like Messages and is also available in a dedicated app; ChatGPT integration: When you feel Apple Intelligence isn’t enough, you can allow ChatGPT to access Writing Tools and other features for a better response; Create Images expansion: Another Apple Intelligence feature available with macOS 15.2 beta 3 is the ability to create an image when you highlight text in the Notes app. While Genmoji wasn’t available with the first beta versions, we hope Apple has added it in the third build. With this feature, you can create custom emojis by combining two figures; users can type a prompt like “monkey with pink hat” to make an entirely new emoji; here’s how to use it. We also don’t know other features Apple is planning for macOS 15.2 beta, which is expected to be released later this year. With macOS 15.1, Apple added iPhone Mirroring improvements and the first Apple Intelligence features, which include: Writing Tools: Proofread your text, rewrite different versions until the tone and wording are right, and summarize the selected text with a tap. Improved Siri: With a new design, Siri can maintain context between requests. Even if you stumble over words or shift what you’re saying mid-sentence, Siri can understand what you actually want. Priority notifications: They appear at the top of the stack, letting you know what to pay attention to at a glance. Notifications are summarized, so you can scan them faster. Clean Up: This feature can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo without accidentally altering the subject. Summarization: Apple Intelligence can now summarize more than just Messages and Mail notifications. Alongside macOS 15.2 beta 3, Apple is seeding the third developer’s beta of iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2. BGR will update this article once we learn more about the new features. tvOS 18.2 beta 2 now available with proper projector support

Apple just released tvOS 18.2 beta 2. After a tame tvOS 18.1 update, this new version is finally adding some of the delayed features announced at WWDC 2024. For example, tvOS 18.2 beta 2 now supports the new 21:9 aspect ratio, which is perfect for Apple TVs connected to projectors. The company has also added a few other options, such as 2.37:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1, DCI 4K, and 32:9. They are available under Apple TV’s Audio and Video settings. Besides that, there’s another feature that could finally be available in future tvOS 18.2 beta updates: new Apple screen savers. As spotted by MacRumors, tvOS 18.2 codes reference new screen savers. The publication says Apple is working on four categories of screen savers, including Snoopy, TV and Movies, Music, and Soundscapes. While MacRumors got an early look at some of those screensavers, Apple said we’ll see the Snoopy and TV and Movies screen savers “later this year.” The Music and Soundscapes options are new and will likely be added alongside the previously announced options. Finally, another feature that might soon be available with tvOS 18.2 beta is robot vacuum cleaner integration with the Home app. It’s unclear which robot vacuums will support this feature, even though Apple says this feature is still coming in 2024. Apple is expected to release tvOS 18.2 by early December; this means the beta testing of the upcoming software update won’t last for very long, and we should have around three new builds before the official version is out. After many tvOS 18 features have made their debut, I can’t wait for my Apple TV to get support for these other new capabilities. The new screen savers will make a nice addition, while the 21:9 aspect ratio will be perfect for using XGIMI’s new Horizon S Max projector, which was recently reviewed by BGR. watchOS 11.2 beta 2 now available to developers

A week after releasing the first beta of watchOS 11.2, Apple has seeded its second testing version. At the moment, it's unclear what's new with it. Unlike other software updates from Apple, watchOS 11 has already delivered all the features announced at WWDC 2024. With watchOS 11.1, Apple added two Apple Intelligence features powered by iPhone 15 Pro or newer devices, which include: Reduce interruptions: An all-new Focus Mode understands the content of your notifications and shows you the ones that might need immediate attention, like a text about picking up your child from daycare later today. Summarization: Apple Intelligence can summarize all your notifications. Since watchOS 11 is a mild update after a packed watchOS 10 release, it's unclear what Apple has in store for Apple Watch users. For example, the company unveiled the new sleep apnea detection with watchOS 11. However, it still needs to be rolled out to more countries. With watchOS 11.2 beta 2, we might see it coming to more regions. Apple says sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition where breathing stops repeatedly during sleep. “The condition, which is estimated to impact more than 1 billion people worldwide, goes undiagnosed in most cases. If left untreated, sleep apnea can have important consequences on health, including an increased risk of hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiac issues.” To detect sleep apnea, the Apple Watch uses an accelerometer to monitor small movements at the wrist that are associated with interruptions in normal respiratory patterns. This is tracked by a new Apple Watch metric called Breathing Disturbances. While some of these disturbances are normal, they are important to track as they can be used to help understand restfulness of sleep and, when occurring frequently over multiple nights, may be associated with sleep apnea. Users can view their nightly Breathing Disturbances in the Health app, where they are classified as elevated or not elevated and can be viewed over a one-month, six-month, or one-year period. Alongside watchOS 11.2 beta 2, Apple has also released the second testing versions of tvOS 18.2 and visionOS 2.2. We'll let you know if we find anything new in these betas. Mining old data from NASA's Voyager 2 solves several Uranus mysteries

When NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Uranus in 1986, it provided scientists' first—and, so far, only—close glimpse of this strange, sideways-rotating outer planet. Alongside the discovery of new moons and rings, baffling new mysteries confronted scientists. The energized particles around the planet defied their understanding of how magnetic fields work to trap particle radiation, and Uranus earned a reputation as an outlier in our solar system.

Physicists create tiny hurricanes of light that could transport huge amounts of data

Much of modern life depends on the coding of information into means of delivering it. A common method is to encode data in laser light and send it through optic cables. The increasing demand for more information capacity demands that we constantly find better ways of encoding it.

Plastic-eating insect discovered in Kenya

There's been an exciting new discovery in the fight against plastic pollution: mealworm larvae that are capable of consuming polystyrene. They join the ranks of a small group of insects that have been found to be capable of breaking the polluting plastic down, though this is the first time that an insect species native to Africa has been found to do this.
