Apple won the CES headset game without showing up

Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Apple isn’t at CES‚ but it had a huge presence anyway. On Monday‚ just before a string of CES keynotes were set to kick off‚ the company announced that its Vision Pro headset would be launching on February 2nd. Apple had already promised that the headset would launch early this year. So the stage was set for its rivals to compete by making CES 2024 a showcase of new ideas about virtual and augmented reality. Ultimately‚ that didn’t pan out. Lots of companies showed up with AR and VR tech. A lot of the headsets offered similar functionality to the Vision Pro‚ like an AR / VR monitor for your computer or a substitute TV. But none were as impressive a package as Apple’s headset‚ nor were most arriving nearly as soon. Photo... Continue reading…

This high-tech sex toy syncs its vibes with music

The Oh! by OhDoki is the company’s second interactive sex toy. | Photo by Victoria Song / The Verge Every once in a while‚ you’ll turn a corner on the CES show floor and see crowds flocking around a high-tech sex toy. This year‚ the one that caught my eye was The Handy‚ an automated masturbator — mainly because it was moving in a way I don’t expect to see in polite company‚ let alone a public show floor. But right next to it was the Oh!‚ a $149.95 toy coming later this spring that had me also saying “Oh?” Both sex toys are made by Norwegian sex tech company Ohdoki. The Handy‚ a motorized device that moves up and down to mimic masturbation for people with penises‚ is certainly the flashier of the two. At a glance‚ the Oh! is unassuming as far as vibrators go. What makes it different is how it vibrates. Most vibrators are simple... Continue reading…

What’s the fastest way to order the Apple Vision Pro? Apple explains in emails to customers

This morning‚ Apple sent an e-mail to customers reminding them that the pre-order for its upcoming spatial computer‚ the Apple Vision Pro‚ starts next week. With the lack of a general page with price and specs for the Apple Vision Pro‚ the company is giving pieces of information about the spatial computer. This week‚ the company revealed that this device will start at 256GB of storage; pre-orders will begin on January 19‚ with the product being released in all Apple Stores across the U.S. on February 2. Now‚ Apple offers a few tips and tricks to make your pre-order process easier. With Apple Vision Pro pre-orders starting at 5:00 a.m. P.T. on January 19‚ users will need to do the following: Make sure your Apple Store app is up to date: For the face scan (explained below)‚ users will need the latest version of the Apple Store app‚ which became available on January 11. Have an iPhone or iPad with Face ID nearby: Apple says that when you order Apple Vision Pro‚ you'll need to scan your face with an iPhone or iPad with Face ID. This helps the company determine the right size Light Seal and headbands‚ which work together to give you a precise fit. Have your vision prescription handy: This item is only necessaire if you need a prescription. Apple writes: "Because Apple Vision Pro is designed to be worn without glasses‚ we've partnered with ZEISS to create custom optical inserts that accommodate most prescriptions. When you order‚ we'll ask a few quick questions to find out if you need optical inserts. If you do‚ you'll upload a valid‚ unexpired prescription from a U.S. eye-care professional after checkout." With all that in mind‚ you'll only need at least $3‚500 to order the Apple Vision Pro. You can learn more about this upcoming spatial computer in our guide below. iPhone sideloading is coming in March‚ EU antitrust chief hints

We've been talking about iPhone sideloading for quite a while now. That's because one large jurisdiction will force Apple to allow iPhone users to install apps from any source they choose. The change will bring third-party app stores‚ third-party payment systems‚ and direct app downloads to the iPhone. That jurisdiction is the European Union (EU). It designated the App Store as one of the gatekeeper services in the region under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The EU also forced Apple to drop Lightning in favor of USB-C on the iPhone 15 and future models. Under the current DMA designations‚ Apple must support iPhone sideloading in the EU by early March. Apple has appealed the EU's decision‚ prompting some to speculate that sideloading might be delayed. But the EU antitrust commissioner Margrethe Vestager visited the US this week‚ where she took meetings with various leaders from big tech companies. Apple's CEO Tim Cook was one of them. Vestager's message to Apple and the world is that sideloading will happen on the iPhone this year. The antitrust chief said in an interview that companies will have to get ready to comply with the DMA regulations once the deadline arrives‚ despite their legal cases protesting DMA designations.
