Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) defended himself on the Senate floor Tuesday morning against the newest criminal charges he faces for allegedly accepting bribes in exchange for advancing the interests of Qatar. The new charges were contained in a superseding indictment that was unsealed last week and alleges Menendez accepted various gifts and payments in exchange for taking action to help Qatar and one of the other co-conspirators listed in the indictment. “I’m innocent‚ and I intend to prove my innocence – not just for me‚ but for the precedent this case will set for you and for future members of the Senate‚” Menendez said. “Members of the Senate are not above the law‚ but they are not beneath it either. Mitt Romney is warning that President Joe Biden’s 2024 campaign focus on the January 6 riot is beating a “dead political horse.” Biden delivered the first speech of his re-election campaign on Friday‚ taking direct aim at former President Donald Trump. Trump is the favorite to win the GOP nomination for president in 2024‚ though the first primary contest in Iowa has yet to take place. During his speech‚ Biden continually hit on Trump’s alleged role in the January 6 riot and compared Trump’s rhetoric since to that of the Nazis. Romney‚ a moderate Republican and vocal Trump critic‚ said that Biden’s focus on the January 6 riot of three years ago is a political loser. “As a Biden campaign theme‚ I think the threat to democracy pitch is a bust‚” Romney told The New York Times in a text. “Jan. 6 will be four years old by the election. People have processed it‚ one way or another. Biden needs fresh material‚ a new attack‚ rather than kicking a dead political horse.” Biden characterized Trump as an authoritarian and a threat to the United States. “Three years ago tomorrow‚ we saw with our own eyes the violent mob stormed the United States Capitol. It looks like the amount of fentanyl in the country is extraordinarily rising. According to that same Homeland Security Committee‚ fentanyl costs as little as $0.10 to produce. That’s a fake prescription pill laced with fentanyl. It can be sold for 10 to 30 bucks‚ which means ten kilos of fentanyl are worth about $20 million. In 2023‚ according to Border Patrol‚ fentanyl seizures were 27‚000 pounds.” “That amounts to about $24.4 billion worth of fentanyl‚” he said‚ “and much more is getting through than is getting caught because the stuff that’s getting caught at the border comes from morons who are largely trying to bring it through ports of entry or people who are getting caught‚ which is a minority of the people who are now entering the country illegally.” “But apparently it’s racist to mention any of this. He basically wants the United States to surrender to him.” “The only reason the most powerful country on earth would surrender to this is because there is an internal belief inside the United States that you have to surrender on illegal immigration because it is unjust that people can’t just enter via the southern border willy-nilly‚” he declared. “The motivation behind the Democrats’ agenda is ideological.
