President-elect Donald Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor” of “the Great State of Canada” in a Truth Social post on Monday night. Trump’s post was in reference to a meeting the president-elect had with Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago last week. During the meeting, Trump reportedly told the Canadian leader that if his country couldn’t afford to pay a potential tariff, it should consider becoming the 51st state. Fox News reported that two sources who were at the table with Trump and Trudeau said that Trump’s comment caused the prime minister to “laugh nervously.” “It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT,” Trump wrote on Monday night. Trump’s post came just hours after Trudeau said that Americans “are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive.” Trudeau added that he would retaliate if Trump implements the tariffs upon taking office, the Associated Press reported. “It would also, however, mean real hardship for Americans as well,” Trudeau said. “Americans import 65% of their crude oil from Canada, significant amounts of electricity. Just about all the natural gas exported from Canada goes to the United States. They rely on us for steel and aluminum. They rely on us for a range of agriculture imports. All of those things would get more expensive.” Trudeau met with Trump a few days after the incoming president threatened to levy a 25% tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico unless the countries worked on securing their borders with the U.S. and cracking down on drug trafficking and illegal immigration in America. “This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump said last month. “Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem.
