Viewers watch in awe as the woman with world's longest fingernails finally gets them cut

There's something about seeing something out of the ordinary, be it a strange animal, an accident or even an argument between strangers. Humans are naturally curious beings and seeing a random argument between your neighbor and her teenage son will have some people outside taking their goldfish for a walk just to gawk. So it's not surprising that thousands of viewers tuned in when Ayanna Williams, the Guinness World Record holder for the world's longest nails went to have them all cut off. Williams had her record breaking nails for 29 years but decided it was finally time to bid them adieu and the entire thing was filmed. It's a monumental moment for the record holder after having lived with the 24 foot nails for decades. Most of us would simply need to grab a pair of fingernail clippers and get clipping, but for Williams the process was a bit more complicated. The record holder couldn't just head to her nearest nail salon for a fresh manicure. She had to have her nails trimmed by Dr. Allison Readinger at Trinity Vista Dermatology, where the dermatologist used a special hand held circular saw. Williams disclosed the two foot nails were causing her joint pain and one of her thumbs was extremely tender so she was relieved to lose the weight of the nails. The nails are now on display at Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum in Orlando, Florida. Viewers couldn't look away from this re-shared video of Williams said goodbye to her long nails. Some comments were supportive while others...not so much."I’m so happy she was able to finally make this decision! I love it," one person writes."Wooww! It's a incredible it's been a 29 yrs," another says. "Oh gosh so satisfying. Can't even have mine passed my finger tips. Ouf," someone exclaims. According to Guinness World Records, Williams went through over two bottles of nail polish and gave up 20 hours of her time with ever nail polish change. If nothing else, cutting her nails will be a money saver and whether you support her nail growth or not, there's something satisfying about watching them be cut off. Mom calls out teacher who gave her son a 'zero' grade for not providing class with supplies

Mom calls out teacher who gave her son a 'zero' grade for not providing class with supplies

The debate as to whether or not parents should supply classroom supplies is not new. But as prices continue to rise, parents are growing more baffled as to how they can be expected by teachers to provide all the various glue sticks, colored pencils, rulers and other various items the incoming students might need. What’s even more perplexing, however, is penalizing the children of parents who won’t (or can’t) provide them. This was the case for Shanitta Nicole, who discovered her son received a zero grade in his new school for not bringing school supplies for the entire classroom.Nicole was especially surprised by this reaction since she had already gone through the effort of making sure her son had every supply he needed from the school’s list, which was slightly different than the one they previously had. And yet, the 7th grade teacher informed her son that he was still expected to provide for the classroom, not just himself. And, thus, a zero grade, for failing the assignment, so to speak. Even though Nicole thought the rule was “weird,” she went out and bought the bulk items, which included tissues, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, pencils, Expo markers, and red pens. And yet, the next week—her son still has a zero. Concerned, Nicole emailed her son’s teacher. “I’m like, ‘hey…my student has a 83 in the class and everything else in the class is 100s and 98s and he still has a zero for something called ‘classroom supplies.’” she said in a video. “‘We bought the supplies anyways, but I don't feel like it's the parents' responsibility to supply your classroom. And I definitely don't think it's appropriate to assign a grade to students based off of whether or not they've supplied your class with supplies. That doesn't make any sense.’” @shanittanicole Am I doing too much? #fyp #school ♬ original sound - Shanitta Nicolee ? And while Nicole’s email did get the teacher to reconcile the grade, there was no mention to her other concern regarding the responsibility for parents to provide the entire class with supplies. “So, I emailed the principal because I just, I might be extra, but I just want to see what's going on. Why do I have to buy supplies for the classroom?” the frustrated mom concluded. Nicole’s video quickly went viral on TikTok, and several weighed in to agree that the teacher’s actions were misguided. “That is so unfair!! Especially for the kids whose parents CANT afford groceries let alone classroom supplies,” one user wrote. Another added, “You are not wrong. It is 100% ok for [the teacher] to ask for supplies, but mandate it for a grade? Absolutely not.”And this point is truly what Nicole took umbrage with, as she noted several times in the comments. It has less to do with being asked to help and more to do with her son’s grade depending on it. In a follow-up video, Nicole shared that the school principal did end up reaching out, notifying her that while, yes, teachers are allowed to ask for donations, it should never be mandated. @shanittanicole Replying to @yafavv._.dancer?????? Graded Supplies Update #fyp #school ♬ original sound - Shanitta Nicolee ? “What the teacher was trying to accomplish, but it definitely wasn't appropriate,” the principal told Nicole. While the teacher might have not handled this situation in the best way, it goes without saying that this is a larger systemic issue—one that isn’t exactly fair to parents, teachers and students alike. Most public school teachers spend a significant amount of their own money on classroom supplies, to an average of $673 per year, according to a recent survey of more than 1,100 educators by the Association of American Educators (AAE). That number only goes up for teachers in high poverty schools. At the same time, according to a 2022 survey with Savings.com, the typical parent also spends nearly $600 on school supplies. Plus things like clothes, backpacks, haircuts etc. In the grand scheme of things, there’s no use placing full responsibility or blame onto teachers or parents. Because either way, students get caught in the crossfire. This is clearly a universal burden that needs attention. This article originally appeared on 10.5.23

Father of the bride steals the show with his incredibly smooth dance moves

Father and daughter dances are a traditional staple of weddings. They tend to range somewhere between tearfully sweet and hilariously cringey. But sometimes, as was the case of Brittany Revell and her dad Kelly, they can be so freakin’ cool that millions of people become captivated.Brittany and Kelly’s video, which amassed, I kid you not, more than 40 million views on TikTok, shows the pair grooving in sneakers (Brittany’s were white because, hello, wedding dress) to their “dance through the decades.” It all began with Young MC’s “Bust a Move,” to give you a clear picture. And bust a move, they did. Though the duo did a handful of iconic moves—the tootsie roll, the MC Hammer dance, the Carlton, just to name a few—“the dougie,” made famous by Cali Swag District, was the obvious fan favorite.Brittany is clearly no stranger to busting a move and showed off her skills, but Kelly had the audience (and the internet) absolutely floored. He not only nailed every move, but kept a constant grin from ear to ear. “Reason number 1838329194920 why I love my dad,” Brittany wrote in her caption. @bnrevell Reason number 1838329194920 why I love my dad. ??? #thatdougietho #fatherdaughter #weddingtok ♬ original sound - Brittany Revell People in the comments were quick to profess love for Kelly as well. Here are some gems: “WHO IS THIS LEGEND!”“I aspire to this level of smooth.”“Pops got moves!!?”“He really is the main character ??”Others shared praise to both dancers for delivering an unforgettable performance. “I would absolutely lose my mind if I saw this at a wedding,” wrote one person. “This is probably THE best TikTok I’ve ever seen. You and your dad are legit rockstars!! Congratulations!!” added another. Brittany told The Morning Show on Channel 7 that she and Kelly have been learning dances together “for fun in the living room” since she was little. “He has always had some rhythm, but I did not know he could pick up the moves like that,” she quipped. Hey, there’s always something new to learn about dear old dad. Brittany also shared in an interview with NBC News that people were responding to more than just impressive choreography—it touched them on a heartfelt level.“I think it’s kind of unique to see a dad of Asian descent be able to open up, let loose and just embrace their American child’s music and culture,” she said, adding that several people who didn’t have relationships with their fathers commended how “inspiring” it was to see the fun Brittany and Kelly created, encouraging them to “be better with their future kids.” Weddings are a celebration of love, and that can extend beyond the bride and groom. This father expressed his love on the dance floor, and it’s giving us all something to smile about.Odds are Brittany and her dad are gonna keep posting even more amazing dance videos. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis admit they don't bathe themselves or their kids very often

The water bill at the Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis residence appears to be pretty low after recent revelations the couple made about their family's bathing habits. In a recent appearance on Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast, they admitted they're not that into bathing themselves or their two children, Dimitri Portwood, 4, and Wyatt Isabelle, 6.The conversation started when Shepard explained his ongoing disagreement with co-host Monica Padman. The two have dissenting views over whether people should use soap. "You should not be getting rid of all the natural oil on your skin with a bar of soap every day," he said. "It's insane."Kunis agreed with Shepard and was very candid about her bathing ritual. "I don't wash my body with soap every day," she shared. "But I wash pits and tits and holes and soles.""I can't believe I'm in the minority here of washing my whole body in the shower," Padman replied. "Who taught you to not wash?""I didn't have hot water growing up as a child," Kunis recalled, "so I didn't shower very much anyway." Kunis was born in the then-Soviet controlled Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi in 1983. Her family migrated to America when she was seven.Kutcher added that he regularly uses soap and water on just his "armpits and crotch" and "nothing else."Kunis has passed her lax attitude towards bathing on to her children."When I had children," she said, "I also didn't wash them every day. I wasn't the parent that bathed my newborns—ever." Shepard agreed, saying that he and wife Kristen Bell only bathe their children as part of a nighttime routine and don't pay much attention to their cleanliness."That's how we feel about our children. We're like, 'Oof, something smells,'" Kunis added. Kutcher has a simple rule when it comes to his children and their cleanliness. "Here's the thing — if you can see the dirt on 'em, clean 'em," he says. "Otherwise, there's no point." \u201cMila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher Say They Only Bathe Their Kids When 'You Can See the Dirt on Them'\u201d — People (@People) 1627410000 While the Kutcher-Kunis clan's approach towards hygiene may not be typical of the average American family, they may not be wrong according to science. Research suggests that children benefit from being exposed to germs early in life."This line of thinking, called the 'hygiene hypothesis,' holds that when exposure to parasites, bacteria, and viruses is limited early in life, children face a greater chance of having allergies, asthma, and other autoimmune diseases during adulthood," WebMD says.Basically, the more your body is exposed to the more it can fight off."Just as a baby's brain needs stimulation, input, and interaction to develop normally, the young immune system is strengthened by exposure to everyday germs so that it can learn, adapt, and regulate itself," notes Thom McDade, PhD, associate professor and director of the Laboratory for Human Biology Research at Northwestern University. As for Kutcher and Kunis, they both share the same attitude when it comes to hygiene so nobody in the relationship has the right to complain if the other is a little funky. If it works for them, who are we to judge? This article originally appeared on 7.28,.21

Brain surgeon breaks down the secret behind the ADHD brain

If you don't have ADHD, understanding it can be difficult. It may seem like the person in your life with the diagnosis, whether it be a young child, teen or a spouse, is simply being lazy or messy when seemly small things are big challenges. Their room may always be a wreck, they may constantly forget things or just lay on the couch while the house is destroyed because they have an appointment later that day.It can look as if the person isn't trying but to the person with the condition, they're likely experiencing a lot of emotions around not being able to push through the mental block to get things done. There are still quite a few people that argue that ADHD isn't real because it's not something they personally believe in but ADHD is a neurological disorder that can be seen in brain scans.Dr. Daniel Amen, who has scanned over 250,000 brains, breaks down the difference between brains that have ADHD and those that don't in a resurfaced clip. The brain surgeon appears on the podcast Diary of a CEO where he speaks to the host Steven Bartlett about ADHD. Bartlett himself has the condition and suspects his mother also has it but is undiagnosed. In the clip pulled from the nearly two hour long episode, Dr. Amen answers the burning question on many people's minds, where does ADHD come from? Add Bored To Death GIF by Travis Giphy "Often, children who have ADHD have one or both parents who have it," Dr. Amen says. "Well, it's genetic. It's clearly genetic. If I don't see it in someone's family, I think head trauma."If someone has ADHD, they can likely look back at their family and see evidence of the disorder in their relatives, starting with one of their parents. But not everyone realizes they have ADHD and fall into wondering what's wrong with them. messy room frantic kid GIF Giphy Bartlett himself shares that he was "useless" in school before explaining his experience growing up, "I just couldn't sit in classrooms. I couldn't sit in classrooms and stay focused on what they were telling me, especially when I wasn't interested. That's been like a defining quality of my life. I'm exceptionally good at not doing things I'm not interested in and I'm good at what I'm interested in but when I'm not interested, I can see my peers almost will themselves to engage in things they weren't interested in and I could never do that. I always said I'm an exceptional quitter."Hearing someone describe themselves as useless may be jarring to some, especially when it was something reiterated by a teacher. But oftentimes, people with ADHD struggle with feeling like they're inherently broken because they don't have the executive functioning capabilities to force themselves to do things that don't have a payoff large enough to override their brain. Dr. Amen explains later in the clip that people with ADHD have brains that essentially shut down when faced with completing a task, while people without ADHD have an active brain in the same scenario. But when someone with ADHD is given a stimulant medication like Ritilin, Adderall or Concerta, it activates the cerebellum and prefrontal cortex–the parts of the brain Dr. Amen says are sleepy in people with ADHD. The doctor further explains that when scanning the brains of people with ADHD, their brains completely deactivate when tasked with concentration but are active while at rest. This is where medication comes in to help the brain activate while focusing, though it's not a cure for the disorder, it's an aid. Scooby Doo Glasses GIF Giphy "Having ADHD is like people who wear glasses," Dr. Amen shares. "People who wear glasses aren't dumb, crazy or stupid, our eyeballs are shaped funny and we wear glasses to focus. I said, people that have ADD aren't dumb, crazy or stupid, some of them are the brightest people I know but their frontal lobes deactivate. Taking medicine is like glasses for your frontal lobe, it helps you focus."

One couple's perfect response to people asking when they're going to have kids.

One couple's perfect response to people asking when they're going to have kids.

"When are you guys going to start having kids?" Like many couples, Carrie Jansen and her husband Nic had heard this question a million different ways, a million different times. The pressure really started to mount when the pair, who've been together for eight years, got married three years ago. While Carrie loves kids (she's an elementary school teacher, after all), she and Nic simply aren't interested in having kids of their own. Now or ever."It's not what I was meant for," explains Carrie in a Facebook message. "It's like, I love flowers, and everyone loves flowers. But that doesn't mean I want to grow my own. I'm perfectly happy admiring other people's gardens."Carrie wanted to tell her family that they don't plan on having kids but knew if she did, they'd say something like, "Oh you'll change your mind one day!" and that pesky question would keep rearing its ugly head.Rather than continue to deflect the question over and over, Carrie decided to do something a little bit different.Since the couple was adding another mouth to feed to the family, they decided to announce it with a series of maternity-style photos, revealing the twist: The new addition was a puppy named Leelu, not a baby."My husband and I have been married 3 years and everyone is bugging us about having a baby. Close enough right?" she captioned the photos. Her pictures went insanely viral, with many of the commenters giving her props for hilariously addressing the dreaded "kids " question."If you don't want kids, don't have kids. Seriously. Have fun with each other. I had three kids early and it's all about them now," wrote one user. "I wish people would just mind their business raising a kid ain't easy and cheap," wrote another."I got my husband a vasectomy for his birthday this year. Best gift ever," chimed in a third.Carrie was overwhelmed and inspired by the viral response. "Having children is definitely a hot topic, and one that is evolving in this generation like so many other social issues," she says. "It's exciting to find others that feel the same way I do.”Carrie is hardly alone in not wanting to have kids — in fact, a record number of women are choosing not to have kids today. In 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey found 47.6% of women between age 15 and 44 had never had children, which is the highest percentage on record. Despite the numbers, however, because we still live in a patriarchally-driven society, women regularly face the expectation that they should be mothers, and they often are judged if they decide not to be.Whether you want to have one kid, five kids, no kids, or a puppy, the choice should be yours and no one else's.No one else has the right to put pressure on you to change your body and life in a drastic way. Thankfully, because of women like Carrie — and partners like Nic — who aren't afraid to bring the subject out in the open, the expectations are slowly but surely changing. This article originally appeared on 12.19.16
