One Big Thing Biden Will Leave Behind

The 1972 presidential election—which pitted incumbent President Richard Nixon against Sen. George McGovern of South Dakota—was an absolute wipeout. Nixon won 49 of the 50 states, losing only Massachusetts. In Delaware that year, Nixon took 59.6% of the popular vote and McGovern took only 39.2%. But the incumbent Republican senator running for reelection there that year suffered a surprising defeat. “President Nixon, a conservative, won handily in Delaware,” reported the Wilmington News Journal the day after that election. “Yet, Democrat Joseph R. Biden, a moderate-to-liberal Democrat, defeated the more conservative Sen. J. Caleb Boggs despite Boggs’ longevity in the Senate.” Age was a key issue in this race between Boggs and Biden—with Biden running ads that suggested Boggs was too old and local newspapers celebrating the then-29-year-old Biden’s youth. “Biden finally shifted into an oblique attack on Boggs’ age, 63, in a series of ads implying that Boggs would have been good for the job in the 1950s but Biden was more in tune with the ’70s,” the Wilmington Morning News reported the day after Biden defeated Boggs. The Wilmington Evening Journal carried this headline that day: “State Elects the Youngest U.S. Senator.” “Democrat Joseph R. Biden Jr. squeaked past two-term Republican incumbent J. Caleb Boggs yesterday to become the nation’s youngest U.S. senator and score one of the nation’s biggest political upsets,” the newspaper reported. “Biden, who will not be eligible for the Senate until he turns 30 on Nov. 20, upset Boggs by 2,986 votes,” the paper said. Biden was sworn in as a senator on Jan. 3, 1973. What was the federal government like when Biden started his career in federal office 51 years ago? In fiscal 1974—the first full fiscal year that Biden served in the Senate—the federal government took in $263.224 billion in taxes and spent $269.359 billion, running a deficit of $6.135 billion, according to data published by the White House Office of Management and Budget. Where did the federal government spend that $269.359 billion in fiscal 1974? The largest spending category when Biden was beginning his career in Washington was the Defense Department—Military Programs. It consumed $77.864 billion in fiscal 1974. The second largest was the Social Security Administration, which spent $58.123 billion. The third largest was the Treasury Department, which manages the federal debt and spent $35.369 billion. The fourth largest was the Department of Health and Human Services, which spent $28.062 billion. As Biden approaches the end of his single term in the White House, we are now in fiscal year 2025—more than half a century past the first full fiscal year of Biden’s time in the Senate. In over half a century, Biden has had some responsibility for federal spending, except during the time when President Donald Trump had responsibility for signing federal spending bills. From January 1973 to January 2009, Biden served in the Senate. From January 2009 to January 2017, he served as vice president; from January 2021 until now, he has served as president. What was federal spending like in fiscal 2024, the last full year Biden oversaw? Biden’s OMB estimates that the federal government collected approximately $5.0815 trillion in taxes in fiscal 2024 and spent approximately $6.9409 trillion, while running a deficit of approximately $1.8593 trillion. The single largest spending category in fiscal 2024, according to the OMB estimates, was the Department of Health and Human Services, which spent approximately $1.6693 trillion. The second was the Social Security Administration, which spent approximately $1.5171 trillion. The third was the Treasury Department, which spent approximately $1.3456 trillion. The Office of Management and Budget has also published a table that shows federal revenues, spending, and deficits for every year going back to 1940 converted into constant fiscal 2017 dollars. This table shows that in fiscal 1974, when Biden was serving his first full fiscal year in the Senate, the federal government spent approximately $1.2413 trillion in constant 2017 dollars. In fiscal 2024, it spent approximately $5.5876 trillion in constant 2017 dollars. Thus, in this era when Biden has served all but four years in federal office, real federal spending has increased more than fourfold. At the same time, according to the Congressional Research Service, the federal debt was $450.068 billion at the end of January 1973, the month Biden was sworn into the Senate. This past Monday, according to the Treasury Department, it was $35.884 trillion. When Biden released his last federal budget proposal in March, he declared his commitment to fiscal responsibility. “Well, the budget I’m releasing today sends a clear message to the American people that we—what we value,” he said. “First, fiscal responsibility.” “The first value,” he repeated, “is fiscal responsibility.” History will not remember Biden that way. Trump Names Campaign Chief Susie Wiles as White House Chief of Staff

President-elect Donald Trump tapped Susie Wiles, his reelection campaign co-chair, as White House chief of staff Thursday as his transition team prepares to launch the second Trump administration. Wiles will be the first woman in history to hold that role. “Susie Wiles just helped me achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history, and was an integral part of both my 2016 and 2020 successful campaigns,” Trump said in a public statement. “Susie is tough, smart, innovative, and is universally admired and respected,” the president-elect added. “Susie will continue to work tirelessly to Make America Great Again. It is a well-deserved honor to have Susie as the first-ever female chief of staff in United States history. I have no doubt that she will make our country proud.” Susan Summerall Wiles, daughter of NFL kicker and legendary sportscaster Pat Summerall, graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park. She began her career in politics working for Rep. Jack Kemp, one of her father’s teammates on the New York Giants. She worked on Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign before becoming chief of staff to John Delaney, who served as mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, in the 1990s. She advised another mayor of Jacksonville, John Peyton, in the 2000s. She advised Rick Scott’s successful 2010 Florida gubernatorial campaign and was campaign manager for Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.’s unsuccessful presidential run in 2011. Wiles ran the lobbying firm Ballard Partners, based in Tallahassee, Florida, for nearly a decade. She ran the 2016 Trump campaign’s operations in Florida. Trump reportedly sent her to advise Ron DeSantis’ successful 2018 gubernatorial campaign in the Sunshine State. In his victory speech, DeSantis described her as “best in the business.” Yet in 2019, DeSantis dismissed her from her role as a top adviser. She later described working for DeSantis as the “biggest mistake” of her career. Wiles became CEO of Trump’s Save America PAC in March 2021. Politics writer Myra Adams described her as Trump’s effective “chief of staff” as he made endorsements in the 2022 midterm elections. Although she typically stays in the background, Adams wrote on X in defending Trump against billionaire Mark Cuban’s claim that Trump doesn’t surround himself with “strong, intelligent women.” “I’m told [Mark Cuban] needs help identifying the strong and intelligent women surrounding Pres. Trump,” she posted. “Well, here we are!” I’m told @mcuban needs help identifying the strong and intelligent women surrounding Pres. Trump. Well, here we are! I’ve been proud to lead this campaign. The navy knit tie: Dependable, versatile, and anti-fragile

The navy knit tie: Dependable, versatile, and anti-fragile

So you want to start wearing a tie. You’ve tossed your hoodies, and you are wearing button-ups these days. You even throw on a sport coat every once in a while. It feels good. The navy knit tie is the anti-fragile tie for the father of young kids. It’s the fabric and the color. You are dressing better than 95% of the guys in America in 2024, but you want to go further. You see those old photos, and you want to look like those guys. You want to wear that mythical garment that was, once upon a time, a staple in every man’s wardrobe. Even the men who worked dirty jobs during the week had ties for church on Sunday and special occasions. As women wore heels, men wore ties. It wasn’t in the ancient past. It was just yesterday, in the 20th century. But since then, our society has become increasingly informal, and ties have faded from the scene. You want to wear a tie, but you don’t know where to start. It’s a small piece of fabric, but it’s a big step if you didn’t grow up wearing one. People will notice. It will stick out to some degree. You want to wear a tie for yourself. You aren’t trying to be a show-off or grab attention. You are hesitant. A beautiful patterned silk is lovely. Ancient madder is luxurious. A bright and bold regimental tie is quintessentially preppy. A kelly-green motif tie is joyous. One can’t help but smile at a light and fluttery bird motif. But they are all too much for you at this point in your style development. When you imagine wearing all those brilliant ties, an image of you wearing a neon sign around your neck that reads “LOOK AT MY TIE” appears in your mind. You don’t want that. You want to ease in.So what do you do? Buy a navy knit tie.A navy knit tie solves the problem perfectly. It’s quiet and simple. There are no stripes or figures that dance around your chest. The hand is unostentatious. A navy knit doesn’t have any kind of glittery sheen. It doesn’t feel delicate or overly formal. If an elegant micro-pattern feels fine, a knit tie feels coarse. A knit reminds us of a thick rope, something almost utilitarian. There is a deep texture to it. You can practically see through the fabric of a crunchy knit if you get close enough. When you hold a fine ancient madder, you use your fingers. When you grab onto a knit, you use your whole palm.A knit tie bridges the gap of formality and informality. Any kind of tie is formal in 2024, but the knit tie dresses itself down. It’s a tie, but it can read as an informal one. A knit gives you plausible deniability in the way a bold motif simply cannot. It doesn’t scream out. It is quiet. All of this is perfect for the guy who is new to menswear and doesn’t want to stand out. It’s also perfect for the guy who has been wearing ties for years. He doesn’t necessarily want to stand out, either. Clothes aren’t about shock and attention. The beautiful, quiet subtlety of the knit is useful for all men. And the navy knit is one of my sartorial MVPs. I rely on it all the time. It’s supremely flexible. It works great with a wide variety of shirts and jackets. In many ways, with a navy knit you don’t even need to think. It’s there for you when you need it. When in doubt, I reach for my navy knit. Maybe you are a father with young kids. They are always jumping on you, pulling on your clothes, and asking to ride on your back. This is no place for a tie, right? Wrong. The knit tie is kid-friendly. With the more delicate ties you often end up concerned about creases and folds. If your tie falls behind the cushion of the couch and stays there for three weeks, it’s going to end up with some terrible wrinkles and creases. But not the knit tie. You can crumple up a knit, slip it under your mattress, and wear it the next day. No one will know. Your toddler can pull on it with his little hands, and no damage will be done. The navy knit tie is the anti-fragile tie for the father of young kids. It’s the fabric and the color. The crunchy, dynamic texture combined with dark, forgiving navy makes the navy knit tie the tie that every new father should buy. J. Press makes a great one.The navy knit is everything you can ask for. It is versatile, subtle, understated, durable, and classic. It’s the perfect tie to help ease you into the wonderful world of neckwear. Whether you're a young guy, an old head, a father, or a bachelor, it won't let you down. Start with a navy knit, and go from there.

Gavin Newsom calls special session of legislature to fund legal challenges against Trump's presidency

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom called a special session of the state legislature in order to organize a campaign to resist the policies of President-elect Donald Trump's second term. 'We are prepared, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive.'Newsom, who had been a surrogate for President Joe Biden and also for Vice President Kamala Harris, issued a statement announcing the special session for Dec. 2 in Sacramento. “The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle,” said the governor. "California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond. We are prepared, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive." Newsom will ask the legislature, which is firmly controlled by Democrats, to vote for new funding for the attorney general's office in order to support the mission to defeat Trump's policies. "The Governor’s proclamation calls for legislation to provide additional resources to the California Department of Justice and other state entities to pursue robust affirmative litigation against any unlawful actions by the incoming Trump Administration," the statement read, "as well as defend against federal lawsuits aimed at undermining California’s laws and policies."Democratic California Attorney General Rob Bonta said that he has been reviewing 120 lawsuits the state made against Trump policies in his first term in order to prepare for challenges in his second term.He also made a promise to the state's illegal aliens that they would use their power to protect them from the president-elect's policies. “I can promise to the undocumented immigrant community in California that I and my team have been thinking about you for months, and the harm that might come from the Trump administration 2.0," said Bonta on Thursday. "We’ll do everything in our power and use the full authority of our office to defend you."Democratic attorney generals from other states have announced efforts to resist and challenge the second Trump term. 3 Florida women shot during drunken argument over politics after Election Day, police say

Florida police say that three women were shot and injured during a drunken argument over politics late in the evening after Election Day. The suspect is still being sought by police according to WFOR-TV.'There is no place for violence, especially over a difference of opinion in politics.' A group of people were drinking at a Miami apartment complex when they began arguing about politics, police said. One of the people then went to a car to retrieve a gun and came back to shoot three of the women in the group. The women were described as being in their late 20s to early 30s by police. One woman was shot in the stomach and is in critical condition while the other two injured were in stable condition. “This is something that is of concern to us. There is no place for violence, especially over a difference of opinion in politics,” said Miami Police spokesman Mike Vega to WFOR. One neighbor told WFOR that she woke up when she heard gunshots at about 12:25 a.m. “I heard somebody screaming and didn’t want to open the door and put myself at risk. It sounded like four shots,” said Suly Ashe. “It is horrible. Whoever is president now is president for all of us, whether we are Democrat or Republican," she added. "It doesn’t matter. It’s our country. It’s very sad that this happened.”Police are working to name the suspect and are asking for help from anyone who might have information about the incident. They did not release a description of the suspect. “This is not acceptable. We have to handle our differences and respect each other’s beliefs. We need to either reach an agreement or simply avoid such topics,” said Vega. A news video report about the incident can be viewed on YouTube. Like Blaze News? Take-Two Boss: We Have The Best Collection of Owned Intellectual Properties In The Business

Given the rising cost of developing AAA games, more studios are seeing layoffs and even closures. This means that not only are we bound to see fewer games being released, but the number of companies willing to risk huge chunks of money to finance AAA games will also decrease.
