WATCH: Here’s Why The Internet Loved Peanut The Squirrel

Internet sensation Peanut, a little grey squirrel, was very active on Instagram and TikTok with hundreds of thousands of followers loving his videos before New York officials seized him from his home and euthanized him this week. On the account for the seven-year-old Peanut are thousands of posts of the squirrel with his guardian Mark Longo ranging from the two munching on waffles to Peanut decked out wearing a Santa hat while drawing attention to Longo’s non-profit animal sanctuary and rescue operation, “P’Nut’s Freedom Farm.”  Some of the best videos that stood out showed the very docile, trained squirrel clearly having the time of his life before he was seized by six officials from New York state’s Department of Environmental Conservation to be “tested for rabies,” according to WTEM. The first video is dated April 17, 2017, when the squirrel was rescued by Longo after he saw the squirrel’s mom hit by a car, the New York Post noted. From there, the videos show the little guy becoming instantly close with his guardian as the two enjoy going on walks together, playing games, and even getting kisses and love from Longo. In one crazy video from February 2020, Longo calls Peanut to come to him while he’s standing pretty far away. The squirrel understands the instruction and launches far into the air, flying and landing on his arm perfectly. He captioned the post, “Alright hooman, I think it’s time the both of us stop being chunky and get back to that summer body long jumps for cardio.”   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Peanut The Squirrel (@peanut_the_squirrel12) In another video dated September 2021, we see Peanut showing off just how trained he was as Longo leads him around the house with a ball on a string. The caption next to the post read, “my hooman decided it’s time for me to start running more. There better be a snack at the end of this run!” MATT WALSH’S ‘AM I RACIST?’ NOW STREAMING ON DAILYWIRE+ In so many of the posts, Peanut is just hitching a ride on Longo’s shoulder as the two pal around or he sits in his guardian’s hand while eating a snack. There’s even videos of him hitching rides while sitting on top of his guardian’s hat checking out the world.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Peanut The Squirrel (@peanut_the_squirrel12) One post made in November 2023 shows a staged set-up of Peanut throwing a waffle party with waffles, oats, and peanut butter without Longo. The caption next to the post — with more than 44 thousand likes — read, “I never get invited.” In a video made five days ago, the two are just hanging out at his animal sanctuary with Peanut eating a waffle while he sits on Longo’s hat.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Peanut The Squirrel (@peanut_the_squirrel12) The next post is after DEC officials seized him and Longo’s raccoon named Fred after the agency said it had received numerous calls about the animals living in the house. The heartbreaking post from Longo talked about how he’s lost his best friend, calling it a “tragedy.” “Well internet, you WON. You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness,” Longo wrote. “To the group of people who called DEC, there’s a special place in hell for you.”

Peanut The Squirrel’s Killing Points To A Larger Problem, Expert Says

Peanut the Squirrel was more than just a social media sensation. He was also the namesake of an animal rescue run by the New York couple that adopted him. Last year, Mark and Daniele Longo opened P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, “a haven where neglected and homeless animals receive a second chance at life” named after their pet squirrel, who they rescued seven years ago. The sanctuary, which they say has helped 350 animals, was made possible in a large part by donations gathered through Peanut’s viral social media accounts. Now that Peanut has been euthanized by New York State, Mark Longo worries the sanctuary may be in trouble. “We’ve relied heavily on PNUT and his internet family to gather donations to help more animals,” Longo wrote on Instagram. “I don’t even know how [we] will continue to fundraise for this nonprofit.” Longo says he is uncertain why the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) chose to seize and euthanize Peanut after seven years, during which time there had been no complaints about Peanut. But according to Center For Consumer Freedom Managing Director Will Coggin, the DEC’s actions are inline with the misguided approach of the animal welfare movement. “The death of Peanut appears to track with a broader trend in the animal rights movement of killing animals,” Coggin told The Daily Wire. “Sadly, many of these people have a ‘better dead than fed’ mentality.” Coggin pointed to one “shocking” case of Maya the Chihuahua, who PETA employees allegedly took from a Virginia family’s front porch and euthanized. Maya’s owner, Wilbur Cerate, told WAVY at the time that security footage from his home shows two women exiting a PETA van that pulls up to his property, putting Maya in the van, and driving away. Cerate told WAVY that the women returned three days later with “a fruit basket and terrible news — Maya had been euthanized.” MATT WALSH’S ‘AM I RACIST?’ NOW STREAMING ON DAILYWIRE+ Accomack County Sheriff Todd Godwin charged the workers with larceny, but the local commonwealth’s attorney dropped the charge. According to Coggin, Peanut and Maya are just two of many animals who have suffered such fates. “PETA euthanized 79% of the dogs and cats it took in last year at its ‘shelter,’ which state inspectors likened to a ‘euthanasia clinic,’” Coggin said. Though PETA has national recognition, Center For Consumer Freedom data suggests that it’s smaller animal rescues like P’Nuts Freedom Farm that do the majority of actual rescuing. The group found that PETA only adopted 58 animals in 2022, a 2.1% adoption rate. The nearby Norfolk Animal Care & Adoption Center, it said, took in 4,337 animals that year, and had a euthanasia rate of just 10%.

Walz, In Master’s Thesis, Said Genocide Education Shouldn’t Focus On Holocaust

Walz, In Master’s Thesis, Said Genocide Education Shouldn’t Focus On Holocaust

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who has built his image around his career as a teacher, earned his master’s degree in education with a thesis on how to teach genocide that deemphasized the Holocaust, suggesting it be used primarily “as a means to educate students on the dangers of racism.” Walz submitted the 25-page paper, “Improving Human Rights and Genocide Studies In The American High School Classroom,” to Minnesota State University in 2001. In the capstone, which was obtained by The Daily Wire, Walz said research showed that Minnesota students couldn’t pinpoint the role that racism played in the Holocaust. Rather than addressing the apparent lack of empathy for Jews, Walz suggests teachers us Holocaust “as a means to educate students on the dangers of racism,” so they can identify early signs of discrimination against other groups. He acknowledged that this argument “was controversial because [sic] the implication the Jewish Holocaust was not viewed as a ‘watershed’ event in human history.” But he did not seem worried about the controversy, writing that “If the Jewish Holocaust is a requirement of the state or local district this is a perfect time to fit it into the unit,” but that “At no time should this current unit be referred to as a Holocaust unit.” Elsewhere, the paper said “American high schools must begin to broaden the scope of studies into genocide and human rights violations. This means continuing to teach the lessons learned in the Jewish Holocaust, but to not limit those lessons to one incident of genocide.” The paper proposed requirements geared toward giving “students the necessary background information to apply historical examples of abuses to current world situations.” “What never again means is never again will European Jews be killed in Europe, it does not mean never again to genocide,” Walz wrote in the introduction. Walz’s running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, has repeatedly likened former President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, a rhetorical barb that some Jews say simultaneously degrades the severity of the actual Holocaust and uses its memory to manipulate people for political reasons. Trump was president from 2017 to 2021 and did not kill six million people. Walz leaves it to schoolteachers to identify which groups and countries may be on the precipice of genocide and flag them to students.  He said teachers could “single out some countries…that are experiencing pre-genocidal conditions.” “Political, social, and economic intervention may help prevent future genocide,” Walz writes. “Great care must me [sic] taken by the teacher to choose examples of economic conditions that are found in all cases were [sic] genocide occurs. The same is true of the political climate of the times the genocide was committed.” “Schools are teaching about the Jewish Holocaust, but the way it is traditionally being taught is not leading to increased knowledge of the causes of genocide in all parts of the world. Better methods of instruction, a variety of resources, and a commitment to the teaching of the causes of genocide rather than specific incidents will give students the understanding of the elements that lead to genocide,” he said. He pointed approvingly to a Massachusetts law mandating teaching about horrors — which listed “the transatlantic slave trade” first and “the holocaust and the Mussolini fascist regime” last — in which “the key change was the lack of emphasis on the Holocaust and a broader definition of genocide and human rights as areas of study. This multidisciplinary approach was what researchers have found to work.” Walz lauded modern resources in which “the Armenian genocide and the Cambodian genocide was presented in the same manner as the database for the Holocaust. This equality of subject treatment was also reflective of the current trends in genocide education.” He does not mention the Holodomor, in which the Soviet Union killed up to five million Ukrainians. “The traditional mindset of holocaust education stated horrible acts committed against others were done by evil people. This seemed to remove all possible causes for the acts from the human realm and move them into the good versus evil realm. This does nothing to teach the causes of the actions,” he wrote. Walz’s capstone includes several spelling and grammar issues. The governor misuses apostrophes in phrases like “Amnesty Internationals’ webpage,” and repeatedly writes “lead” where he meant “led.”

“American Pickers” Star Mike Wolfe Details Frank Fritz’s Heartbreaking & Healing Final Moments,  “I Was Holding His Hand”

American Pickers stars Frank Fritz and Mike Wolfe found their way back to each other during Frank’s final days, and in a new interview, Mike emotionally shared that he was by Frank’s side when his friend took his last breath. “I got the call that he wasn’t doing well,” he told People. “I just feel blessed that I was able to get there; I was there for about an hour before he passed. And I was holding his hand and rubbing his chest when he took his last breath. I took my fingers, and I closed his eyes.” Frank and Mike’s story began in middle school. When they met, they became immediate friends and bonded over their shared struggles of growing up without fathers. Mike grew to admire Frank’s steadfast resilience while they moved “through life.”  “He was one of those guys, no matter who we talked to, he could always make people feel comfortable and let them know that they’re being heard,” Mike shared before noting that Frank “was an extremely hard worker” who owned his first home by the time he was 19. He was like no one I’d ever met in my whole life,” he remembered. When Mike Wolfe Envisioned “American Pickers,” Frank Fritz Was His Biggest Supporter When Mike Wolfe first envisioned American Pickers, Frank Fritz was “the only person who didn’t make fun of [him]. Mike fought for years to get his series on television. And while others scoffed, Frank offered unwavering support. When Mike finally got his big break, Frank was right by his side. Then, for 11 years, the two traveled the country searching for dusty treasures for The History Channel. But in 2021, Frank disappeared from the screen. In an interview with The Sun, he admitted that he had gone into treatment for alcoholism. He also shared that, due to the circumstances, he and Mike had a falling out. Fans and the media made their assumptions. The results were devastating. “This is so hard for me to talk about because there were a lot of things that were said that weren’t true. And I always continued to pray for him. But unfortunately, the things that we want for someone… sometimes [it’s] just not enough, and they have to want these things for themselves,” he told People. The former best friends backed away from each other, but Mike “never stepped away from him completely.” Fortunately, they had a tearful reunion and forgave each other. Shortly after, Frank suffered a serious stroke. Complications ultimately took his life. Frank Fritz died on September 30, 2024. He was 60. Mike Wolfe was able to make it to Frank Fritz’s bedside, and he stayed with him until he passed. “I just told him that I wasn’t mad at him and that I loved him and that I cared about him so much,” he recalled. “And then when I could see that he was struggling, I just said, ‘Just go find your mom. Go find her right now. Just go find her.'” This story’s featured image is by Debby Wong via Shutterstock.
