Lara Trump announced she will step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee, fueling speculation she may receive the nod from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to become the state’s next U.S. senator. Several allies of the Trump family have named her as someone they’d like to see fill the seat, and she herself has not rejected the possibility. “If I am tapped to serve in another capacity, it truly would be my honor,” she told Fox News last month. “I have not been asked yet, but I certainly would strongly consider it if it is presented to me.” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a former political rival who ran against Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, will get to choose Rubio’s replacement. DeSantis is also reportedly being considered as a replacement for Pete Hegseth, the embattled choice for defense secretary. A source told NBC News last week that the president-elect and DeSantis directly spoke about the issue. “Trump talked to the governor and wants him to do it,” a source familiar with the conversation said.

A person of interest in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was detained by law enforcement authorities in Pennsylvania. The man was identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione. According to the New York Post, Mangione was taken into custody Monday morning at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. “At this time, he is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen, targeted murder of Brian Thompson,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, according to CBS News. “The suspect was in a McDonald’s and then recognized by an employee who then called police. Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs as well as a U.S. passport,” Tisch added. Mangione is reportedly an “anti-capitalist Ivy League grad” and apparently “hated the medical community because of how it treated his sick relative,” the New York Post noted. The manifesto railed against the US healthcare industry, including over its enormous profits and alleged shady motives, sources said. Mangione had a particularly personal reason to hate the medical community — its treatment of an ailing relative, sources said. Online obituaries show he lost a grandmother in 2013 and grandfather in 2017. His LinkedIn page indicates that he once worked in an assisted-living facility for the elderly for a few months in 2014, while still in high school. Investigators later said they believed the person of interest had left New York City, possibly on a bus bound for Atlanta. A source close to the investigation said that a person of interest was being questioned about Thompson’s murder after Pennsylvania authorities took him into custody on an unrelated incident in Altoona. He was in possession of a gun with a silencer, matching a description of the weapon used to kill Thompson, and a fake New Jersey driver’s license, sources said. Two law enforcement sources said a person at a McDonald’s restaurant called Pennsylvania police after spotting Mangione, who they said resembled the person of interest sought by the NYPD. Local authorities responded and arrested him on an illegal gun charge while investigators worked to confirm whether he is the alleged gunman who shot Thompson. “This is a strong person of interest,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said. “He matches the description of the identification we’ve been looking for. He’s also in possession of several items that we believe will connect him to this incident.” Over the weekend, NYPD continued to search Central Park for clues, specifically the weapon used to kill Thompson, but were unsuccessful.
