It’s another unwelcome hiccup in Ford’s path to becoming a global EV producer. The plan is to shut things down after the last shift on Friday, November 15th, at which point the plant will be closed for seven weeks, including holidays in which no work would have occurred anyway. The reasons are a bit vague, with Ford spokesperson Emma Berg citing a need to “adjust production for an optimal mix of sales growth and profitability.” That last word — profitability — is surely driving most of this decision. The Mudita Kompakt E Ink phone is expected to sell for under $500. | Image: Mudita Mudita is not the first company to build a phone with an E Ink screen, but its Kompakt isn’t only about bringing the benefits of e-paper to smartphones. The company describes the Kompakt as a “minimalist E Ink phone” that’s designed to reduce distractions with a limited collection of bundled apps. The Kompakt is being made available to consumers through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. The earliest backers can pre-order one for around $325 with shipping expected as early as April 2025. Full retail pricing is expected to be closer to $476, making the Kompakt cheaper than other E Ink phones from companies like Hisense. After piloting BrightDrop 400 vehicles for customer deliveries, Walmart is officially adding them into its fleets. The company says its in-home delivery program is expanding to reach 62 million households nationwide and will roll out Chevy BrightDrops in Austin, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, northwest Arkansas, Orlando, and the San Francisco Bay area by the end of the year. The software giant had planned to start testing Recall, which creates screenshots of mostly everything you see or do on a Copilot Plus PC, with Windows Insiders in October. Now, Microsoft says it needs more time to get the feature ready. “We are committed to delivering a secure and trusted experience with Recall. As a Halloween treat for ChatGPT users (and a trick for the likes of Google and Bing), OpenAI has turned its AI chatbot into an internet search engine. As the company explains in a blog post, ChatGPT is now better than ever at searching the web and capable of providing fast and timely answers to your questions with links to relevant sources. The search feature is built into the ChatGPT interface. OpenAI added a web search icon below the text box, and while ChatGPT will decide whether or not to search based on the prompt, you can also manually choose to search with the new icon. Search will be available on ChatGPT.com as well as on the desktop and mobile apps. ChatGPT Plus users, Team users, and SearchGPT waitlist users all have access to the feature starting on October 31. To that end, OpenAI has partnered with a number of news and data providers to give users up-to-date information about weather, stocks, sports, news, and maps. While Google is making it increasingly difficult to find the original source of the information that it provides, OpenAI prominently displays its citations. “ChatGPT search promises to better highlight and attribute information from trustworthy news sources, benefiting audiences while expanding the reach of publishers like ourselves who produce premium journalism," said Pam Wasserstein, President of Vox Media. OpenAI says that ChatGPT search is powered by "a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o, post-trained using novel synthetic data generation techniques, including distilling outputs from OpenAI o1-preview." The company plans to continue improving the feature, specifically focusing on shopping and travel. OpenAI also wants to bring search to Advanced Voice and canvas.
