With Christmas just around the corner, folks around the world have Santa Claus on their minds. For most of us, we’re thinking of the jolly guy who gives out presents worldwide. But thanks to a recent discovery in Turkey, folks are sharing exciting news in regards to the real deal. In case you didn’t know, Saint Nicholas was a real person. In fact, the fictional character of Santa is based on this very guy! Saint Nicholas was a Christian bishop in the city of Myra in Asia Minor. He was known for his generosity, which includes giving out gifts. After he passed away, the Church of St. Nicholas was built on the site where he served as bishop. It’s said that he was buried near here; however, archeologists have been uncertain about the location of his remains. Wikimedia Commons From what they can tell, while his remains were originally at the Church of St. Nicholas, they were eventually moved to Italy during the First Crusade. This means that today, most of his remains could be in Italy at the Basilica di San Nicola. Archeologists have tested these remains, but it’s still difficult to know for sure if they belong to Saint Nicholas. That said, the tomb that was recently discovered at the St. Nicholas Church further proves this story. It’s 2 meters in length and was partially buried at 1.5 to 2 meters. It also has a raised lid with a pitched roof. “Our biggest hope is to find an inscription on the sarcophagus.
