Colbert Denounces 'Extra Sinister' WashPost For Not Endorsing Harris

CBS’s Stephen Colbert did not appreciate the Washington Post’s “extra sinister" decision to refrain from endorsing Kamala Harris. On Monday’s edition of The Late Show, Colbert railed against the paper and declared it is failing to uphold its stated commitment to democracy and warn “about a looming fascist regime.” Colbert began, “Kamala Harris has been racking up major endorsements, but this weekend, she didn't get a big one because the Washington Post announced it will not endorse a presidential candidate in the upcoming election. Explains, yeah, I agree, explains why they changed their slogan from ‘democracy dies in darkness’ to “democracy dies or doesn't. We can't tell because it is so dark in here.”     He then quoted opinion editor David Shipley as saying, “The Post was no longer going to tell people how to vote, a posture that would reflect the papers independent bona fides.” An animated Colbert ranted, “Okay, counterpoint, you are the opinion editor. Your whole job is to have an opinion about stuff like this. That would be like a movie critic writing, ‘I give Megalopolis thumbs. To say how many or which direction they’re pointing would ruin my independent bona fides. Adam Driver gives a performance.’” Colbert then switched his ire to owner Jeff Bezos, “What’s extra sinister about this is the paper had an endorsement for Harris already written and ready to go, but at the last minute it apparently got yanked by the paper’s owner, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.” After a moment of self-awareness where he pretended to buy a paper shredder from Amazon to shred his Washington Posts, Colbert turned to the reaction to the Post’s non-endorsement, “Turns out refusing to express an opinion about a looming fascist regime is unpopular among newspaper subscribers because as of this taping, more than 200,000 people have canceled digital subscriptions to the Washington Post. 200,000 gone. 200,000. You can't lose those kind of people. If this keeps up, it could destroy the Washington Post. Now, is that a good thing or a bad thing? I have no opinion.” People like Colbert did not read previous Washington Post presidential endorsements to get informed opinions of the two candidates. Instead, they read them because cocooning oneself in an echo chamber feels good and contrary to Colbert's protests, democracy will survive the paper not endorsing Kamala Harris. Here is a transcript for the October 28 show: CBS The Late Show with Stephen Colbert 10/28/2024 11:46 PM ET STEPHEN COLBERT: Kamala Harris has been racking up major endorsements, but this weekend, she didn't get a big one because the Washington Post announced it will not endorse a presidential candidate in the upcoming election. Explains, yeah, I agree, explains why they changed their slogan from “democracy dies in darkness” to “democracy dies or doesn't. Your whole job is to have an opinion about stuff like this. That would be like a movie critic writing, “I give Megalopolis thumbs. To say how many or which direction they’re pointing would ruin my independent bona fides. Adam Driver gives a performance.” What’s extra sinister about this is the paper had an endorsement for Harris already written and ready to go, but at the last minute it apparently got yanked by the paper’s owner, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.  Well, that’s it. I'm going to shred my collection of Washington Posts. Okay. Amazon.com, paper shredders, and, ooh, two day shipping and you know what, I do need refills on the Nespresso. That is really great just one click right there. Can you make sure that gets charged up? Turns out refusing to express an opinion about a looming fascist regime is unpopular among newspaper subscribers because as of this taping, more than 200,000 people have canceled digital subscriptions to the Washington Post. 200,000 gone. 200,000. ‘They Lied!’ Trump Cites MRC Survey, RIPS Big Tech’s Election Meddling

Former President Donald Trump and popular podcast host Joe Rogan called out Big Tech’s interference in the 2020 presidential election, predicting a new era where young Americans will break free from censorship and leftist “wokeness.” During Friday’s edition of the Joe Rogan Experience, Trump appeared to reference a 2020 Media Research Center survey, which found Big Tech’s influence titled the election in favor of Joe Biden.  According to the MRC, one in six Biden voters (17%) said they might not have supported him if they had known about Biden-related controversies, including the Hunter Biden laptop scandal revealed by the New York Post. “Fifty-one intelligence agents came up that the laptop was from Russia. They lied. … It was Hunter’s. It was from his bed. It was Hunter’s laptop. They said it was created by Russia!” Trump said, referring to the infamous Politico letter that influenced social media companies to censor the laptop exposé just before the election. Trump added, “They said it made a 17-point difference. That’s a big difference.” This comment appeared to cite MRC data indicating that 45.1 percent of Biden voters were unaware of the laptop scandal, with 9.4 percent stating they would not have voted for Biden had they known. This margin would have tipped Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin toward Trump. Read the full report here: https://t.co/y8Zfb5rCx8 — Media Research Center (@theMRC) October 26, 2024 Earlier in the podcast, Rogan scolded leftists for abandoning the First Amendment. “The rebels are Republicans now. They're like, ‘You want to be a rebel? You want to be punk rock? You want to, like, buck the system? You're a conservative now,” Rogan said. “Then the Liberals are now pro-silencing criticism. they're pro-censorship online. They're talking about regulating free speech and regulating the First Amendment. It’s bananas to watch.” Trump agreed, contrasting the leftist shift on free speech with their willingness to use the justice system to crack down on their opponents. Specifically, Trump affirmed he has been targeted more often than the notorious, violent criminal Al Capone. Trump has positioned himself as the pro-free speech candidate ahead of the 2024 presidential election. In a 2022 video, he said, “The censorship cartel must be dismantled and destroyed — and it must happen immediately.” Now, Trump has made it clear that maintaining free speech is more important than ever.  After all, Trump is the only sitting U.S. president ever banned by Big Tech companies. Twitter banned his account on Jan. 8, 2021, while allowing global dictators, such as Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Madur, to remain active. Conservatives are under attack. Contact your representatives and demand that Big Tech be held to account to mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency, clarity on hate speech and equal footing for conservatives. Male breaks into rural home, makes threats, ignores gun-toting resident's warning to stop. It ends badly for intruder.

A resident of a rural Illinois home fatally shot an intruder early Friday morning, Shelby County Sheriff Brian McReynolds told the Effingham Daily News.“At 5:25 a.m., the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a home invasion in progress at a rural Herrick address within Shelby County,” McReynolds said in a press release, the paper said. “The suspect was identified as Wade M. Barnes, 19 years old, of Cowden. Barnes was known by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office due to prior involvements, including a current criminal case.”It seems Barnes was in trouble with the law earlier this month. He was charged Oct. 9 with aggravated fleeing from a police officer, possessing a firearm without a state Firearm Owner's Identification Card, transporting liquor by a driver under 21, damage to property greater than $300, and operating an uninsured vehicle.Barnes was threatening the home's occupants, the Daily News said, and McReynolds noted that an occupant retrieved a gun and verbally warned Barnes to stop.“Barnes continued into the residence, ignoring the warning,” McReynolds said, according to the paper. “Shots were fired in the direction of Barnes, striking him. EMS was dispatched. EMS transported to Good Shepherd Hospital, in Shelbyville, where he succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced deceased at 7:16 a.m.”The Daily News said the sheriff's office is investigating the incident, and state police, the Shelby County Coroner, and the Shelby County State’s Attorney have been contacted to assist with the investigation. What else do we know about the suspect? It seems Barnes was in trouble with the law earlier this month. He was charged Oct. 9 with aggravated fleeing from a police officer, possessing a firearm without a state Firearm Owner's Identification Card, transporting liquor by a driver under 21, damage to property greater than $300, and operating an uninsured vehicle, according to the paper, which cited online court records. Barnes' next court appearance was scheduled for Nov. 20, the Daily News said.Barnes also was charged on May 18, 2023, with aggravated fleeing and speeding 35 miles per hour over the speed limit, the paper said, adding that the fleeing charge was dismissed. Barnes paid a fine and was ordered to driver education and community service, the Daily News noted. How are observers reacting?Commenters under WICS-TV's Facebook post about the incident were decidedly behind the individual who ended the break-in threat. Here are a handful of those reactions:"It’s about time people start defending themselves again!!! Great job!!!" one commenter wrote."If you are going to engage in criminal activity, you accept the consequences," another user added. "I did not get shot recently; probably because I don't do crimes. Hmmmmm.""The criminals' anthem... another one bites the dust!" another commenter stated."Justice is served," another user declared.Like Blaze News?
