The Playdate Stereo Dock has been shelved

So long for now, Playdate Stereo Dock. | Screenshot: Playdate Well, we finally know what’s up with Panic’s Playdate Stereo Dock. It’s not coming — at least, not for a while. In an update to the Stereo Dock’s page, the company describes the challenges it faced in getting a good prototype, but says that, in the end, the device didn’t meet its standards. The Stereo Dock was going to be a small desktop Bluetooth speaker and pen holder that you could attach a Playdate to. Panic first announced the Stereo Dock in 2021, when it was still working toward releasing the Playdate. On the web page, the company describes the unexpected challenges it faced getting the Stereo Dock to market: What happened? Well, our first regret was assuming that our factory at that time — a factory that made lots of Bluetooth... Continue reading…

Volvo and Polestar EVs are now getting Tesla Supercharger access

Volvo and Polestar — two Swedish car brands owned by China’s Geely — are now offering their electric vehicle customers access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. The companies are taking orders for adapters that will allow its EV customers to charge at over 17,800 Supercharger stalls across the country. Tesla’s superior charging experience and the ubiquity of its Superchargers has spurred the entire auto industry to announce support for the company’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). All non-Tesla EVs will require adapters at first, but automakers have said they intend to start producing vehicles with native NACS ports installed at the factory starting as soon as 2025. All non-Tesla EVs will require adapters at first Ford, GM,... Continue reading…

Apple announces redesigned Mac Mini with M4 chip — and it’s so damn small

Image: Apple As part of the company’s week of Mac-focused announcements, Apple has just introduced a smaller, yet even more powerful Mac Mini. It’s now equipped with Apple’s latest M4 silicon, supports ray tracing for the first time, and ships with 16GB of RAM by default — seemingly the new normal in the Apple Intelligence era. The machine still starts at $599 with the regular M4 chip, while the more powerful M4 Pro model has a starting price of $1,399. Like the refreshed iMac announced yesterday, the Mac Mini is available to preorder immediately and will be in stores on November 8th. The first thing you’ll notice is the new design. As rumored, the Mini has been shrunken down considerably — and it was already a relatively small desktop machine to... Continue reading…

Apple to manufacture iPhone 17 in India in continued push away from China

It's been a month since Apple released the iPhone 16. Still, the company has started the manufacturing process to make the regular iPhone 17 in India. This is the first time Cupertino began a New Production Introduction of an iPhone outside China. According to The Information, Apple wants to reduce its reliance on China to avoid possible supply constraints, such as with the iPhone 14, which was released a couple of years ago. The report reveals: "For the first time, Apple is using an Indian factory to do the early manufacturing work for the base model of next year’s iPhone 17, according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation. The choice of an Indian factory for this stage of iPhone development—figuring out how to translate a prototype designed in Cupertino into a device that can be mass-produced—highlights the progress Apple has made in diversifying its supply chain to India from China and its confidence in the capabilities of Indian engineers." In this early manufacturing phase, Apple needs to tweak the iPhone design and experiment with new materials and equipment to ensure that "millions of iPhones can be produced a day across different locations with minimal defects." While this switch is important for Apple, the company still relies heavily on China. The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models and the rumored iPhone 17 Air/Slim will still be idealized in the country. If India can replicate the production expertise found in China, it means Apple could expand production there in the near future. Rumors so far predict Cupertino will launch a regular model and two Pro versions. More interestingly, the Plus iteration will be ditched by a new Air/Slim model, which will feature a single camera, an ultrathin design, and Apple's new A19 chip. Digital Reconstruction Brings Back to Life Face of Sudanese Royalty from Ancient Egypt

Using digital reconstruction, the face of a Sudanese woman identified by hieroglyphics as “Ta-Kr-Hb” or “Takerheb”, who lived some 2,500 years ago hailing from the powerful Kingdom of Kush, has been brought back to life. Housed in Perth Museum Scotland since 1936, her sarcophagus, which has long intrigued Scottish visitors, is set to become a star attraction in an upcoming exhibition. The exhibition, titled, “Waters Rising”, opens on November 8. The exhibition “traces stories and objects connected to flooding from Scotland and abroad, from biblical accounts to Ancient Egypt to North America, and more recent events closer to home. Exploring the growing threat of the global climate emergency whilst examining the impact of flooding and extreme weather events on communities, businesses, and infrastructure in Perth and Kinross, the exhibition also includes photos, memories, and stories from local people”, as per the website note. The connection? Well, it was the flooding of the Nile, which damaged Takerheb’s sarcophagus.
