Land Manager Discovers Impressively Unruly Creature Stuck At The Bottom Of Metal Pipe

Arid Recovery is an Australian wildlife management organization working on transforming “desert wildlife from threatened to thriving.” Part of their mission includes: “We aim to reverse mammal extinction trends in the arid zone and develop innovative strategies to manage and protect these critical ecosystems.” Sometimes, that includes something as simple as a bird rescue. @arid.recovery This cheeky guy was rescued by our Conservation Land Manager, Nathan. #ecologytiktok #fieldwork #australianfauna #outbackaustralia #birdsoftiktok #aussiebirds #aridrecovery #totherescue ♬ Stealthy mischief(1088178) – KBYS Conservation Land Manager Nathan discovered an animal stuck in a long pipe. Unsure what type of critter it was, he faced some challenges in helping it back to freedom. He settled on inserting a long strap down the pipe to the animal, hoping it would grab on. It did, so Nathan gently pulled in the slack. When the critter reached daylight, it was still challenging to identify, but it did seem to have feathers. Image from TikTok. The little animal was pink and gray, with a lighter pinkish head. Nathan helped extricate it from the top of the pipe, and it immediately flew away. We’re glad that he was able to rescue the bird unharmed. Followers on TikTok helped to identify the bird. Most commenters thought the bird was a galah cockatoo. Image from Wikimedia Commons. The galah cockatoo is native to Australia and gets its name for its personality characteristics. To understand it better, we should discuss what the word “galah” means in Australian slang terminology. According to the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics at Australian National University, the meaning of the word galah is: “… galah is used to refer to a fool or idiot. This figurative sense is recorded from the 1930s, and derives from the perceived stupidity of the bird.” Now you understand how the silly bird ended up at the bottom of a long pipe needing rescue. Scientists Restore Pig’s Brain Activity an Hour After Death

Scientists Restore Pig’s Brain Activity an Hour After Death

Scientists from Sun Yat-sen University in China successfully restored brain activity in pigs nearly an hour after blood circulation had stopped. In some cases, this activity was sustained for several hours. The researchers suggest that this breakthrough could soon extend the window for successful recovery after cardiac arrest. The key to this success was the inclusion of the liver in the recovery process, as reported by ScienceAlert. Sudden cardiac arrest causes a drop in blood flow (ischemia), which is especially dangerous for the brain, leading to severe and irreversible damage within minutes. The limited recovery time after cardiac arrest is due to this rapid brain deterioration. In recent years, scientists have been experimenting with pigs to explore ways to delay brain damage following ischemia. In the study, researchers induced brain ischemia in 17 laboratory-bred Tibetan pigs for 30 minutes. One group also experienced liver ischemia, while the other did not. When the pigs’ brains were examined, those without liver ischemia showed significantly less brain damage. The next step was to see if a healthy liver could be integrated into a life support system to revive the brain of a pig that had been euthanized. This system typically includes an artificial heart and lungs to circulate fluid through the brain. In one group, the liver was added to this setup. In the system without the liver, electrical activity appeared in the brain within 30 minutes, but gradually declined afterward. The researchers then tested various intervals for connecting the brain to the liver support system—after 30, 50, 60, and 240 minutes. They found that the 50-minute interval showed the most promise, with brain activity resuming and being sustained for six hours. In contrast, brains deprived of oxygen for 60 minutes only maintained activity for three hours, highlighting the critical timeframe in which resuscitation using a functioning liver can be effective. The study’s findings underscore the liver’s crucial role in protecting the brain after cardiac arrest. The research is published in EMBO Molecular Medicine. Column: '60 Minutes' Has Tortured Republicans for Decades

On October 20, the 60 Minutes squad put out a statement dismissing Donald Trump’s accusations of manipulative editing in their Kamala Harris interview as “false.” But they offered no evidence in support of their claims. Everyone can see the divergence between the Harris word salad that appeared in a promo on Face the Nation and the shorter, more coherent answer on their election special. But they refuse to release a transcript to explain themselves. It’s always maddening when the arrogant journalists who claim they hold government accountable refuse to be accountable. Nobody in TV news has been more overpraised than 60 Minutes. This horde of urbane leftist snobs has concocted syrupy minutes for Democrats (especially Barack Obama) and salty minutes for Republicans (especially Trump). Four years ago at this time, Lesley Stahl’s interview with Trump was so hostile, the transcript is a long list of interrupted answers. Right from the beginning, Stahl asked, “Are you ready for some tough questions?” She asked that four times. Trump couldn’t even finish sentences. Stahl lectured him that the Hunter Biden laptop was unverified. “You know, this is 60 Minutes. And we can't put on things we can't verify.” That needed a laugh track. (See Dan Rather’s 2000 phony-documents debacle on 60 Minutes II.) Trump accurately shot back: “No, you won't put it on because it's bad for Biden.” Stahl argued that the Bidens taking money from Russia and China and Ukraine wasn’t a serious issue, and instead revisited 2016 issues like “Lock Her Up” chants against Hillary Clinton – and in 2020, against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) But it’s easy to forget Norah O’Donnell’s interview with Biden four years ago, where she lamented Biden was “forced to address new and unverified claims that he was involved in his son Hunter’s foreign business dealings.” As we know, CBS claimed they couldn’t be verified. O’Donnell tossed this whiffle ball: "Do you believe the recent leak of material allegedly from Hunter's computer is part of a Russian disinformation campaign?" Biden gave an unchallenged answer about how the intelligence community said “Giuliani was being fed disinformation from the Russians” “Putin’s trying very hard to spread disinformation about Joe Biden,” and “it’s a smear campaign.” There was no interruption and no followup. They went to commercial. This pattern is not new, and moderate Republicans were also knifed. Mike Wallace's interview with Mitt Romney in 2007 was sharply personal, demanding to know if the Republican candidate had premarital sex with his wife and asking his five sons why none of them had ever joined the military. In 2008, Scott Pelley hammered John McCain on the Wall Street bailout: "But why would you let the Wall Street executives sail away on their yachts and leave this on the American taxpayer?" Back in 2000, 60 Minutes devoted a whole segment to crackpot author J.H. Hatfield and his book trashing George W. Bush called Fortunate Son. They put on this Lesley Stahl segment despite Hatfield being unable to prove Bush was arrested for cocaine possession and despite Hatfield paying for a hit man. Their website announced: "Just because he lied to his editors about being a convicted felon isn't a good enough reason for those editors to doubt his book.” They weren’t kidding. For the die-hard Democrats at CBS “News,” Republicans don’t deserve any decency – including the candidates they now celebrate as the decent ones.

Cat Parks: 4 Reasons Why They Don’t Exist

Click to Skip Ahead Reasons Why Cat Parks Don’t Exist Should Cat Parks Exist? You can find a dog park in just about every major city, many minor cities, and some small towns and municipalities. Dog owners seem to have a lot of options for canine exercise and socialization, so why don’t cat parks exist for cat owners? As it turns out, there are a few good reasons that cat parks don’t exist. Here’s what you need to know. The 4 Reasons Why Cat Parks Don’t Exist 1. Cats Have Unique Bathroom Habits Though some dogs can be trained to use a litter box or puppy pad, most dogs learn to be comfortable relieving themselves outdoors. They’re not private animals, so they’re fine relieving themselves in a dog park. On the other hand, cats prefer the comfort and familiarity of their litter box at home, which is probably in a private spot like a closet or basement. If you put a cat in a cat park, they will hold it the entire time. Image Credit: Sharaf Maksumov, Shutterstock 2. Cats Are Solitary Animals Everyone knows that cats are loners and dogs are pack animals. While the latter is actually a point of contention among canine professionals, it’s clear that dogs form bonds with other dogs, cats, and humans. Cats, not so much. They form social groups in some situations, but not like dogs. They don’t need friends or playtime, so putting a bunch of cats together in a park to roam freely is a recipe for disaster. 3. Cats Don’t Need Tons of Space for Exercise Some dogs need a lot of space to run and play, which some owners may be unable to provide in small homes, homes without a yard, or apartments. Dog parks give them that space to help their dogs get some exercise. Cats need exercise, but they often get it by jumping vertically, such as onto a high shelf or cat perch, playing with interactive toys, or exploring their home. They don’t need an acre of grass to run and exercise; if you put them in that environment, they’re not likely to go off exploring. Image Credit: Dora Zett, Shutterstock 4. Cats Don’t Like Change Most dogs enjoy exploring new environments. When they’re put in a new open space, they’ll likely run around, sniff, dig holes, and mark territory. Cats do not share this enjoyment. Most cats hate change and being put in new situations. Though they are predators, they are also prey to larger predators. They’ll react to the sights, sounds, and smells of a park with fear instead of joy. Should Cat Parks Exist? As you can see, there are several good reasons why cat parks don’t exist and probably never will, no matter how many cat owners ask for them. They’re not ideal for cat temperaments and simply aren’t necessary when cat owners can satisfy all their cat’s needs in their homes. Aside from that, the reality is that many professional dog trainers aren’t on board with dog parks. While they acknowledge that some owners need that space to allow their dogs to run, play, and explore in a safe, dedicated space, there are considerable risks to using a dog park. Not all owners are the same, not all dogs behave the same, and bringing these dogs together can often create bigger problems than it can solve—including different types of aggression. There are certainly some owners and some dogs that benefit from a dog park, but taking all that into consideration, it is clear why cat parks are not a good idea for virtually any cats. Image Credit: Shutterstock Conclusion People may love both dogs and cats, but they have different personalities and needs. With their solitary nature, need for privacy, and general dislike of change and new experiences, cats are not a good choice for a park and socialization. Cat parks will probably never exist, and they shouldn’t.
