The range of choices is incredible, but it is slightly more difficult if you wear a “couples” costume. Nobody wants to be the back end of a horse, cow, or camel. One couple found a unique solution. You think this is weird, but to each their own. But then his arm swings up, releasing a handful of goodies as he shouts, “Piñata!” The lightbulb lights up, and you realize the genius before you. The female winds up and whacks the piñata again to produce another shower of goodies. This was definitely a favorite of bystanders. They urged whack after whack, and she obliged. You’ve heard of the cat distribution system, but this man’s unexpected puppy rescue will have you believing in the canine version. While sitting in his truck, this driver spotted not one, not two, but five stray doggies wandering the road! He suspected that someone had abandoned them. He didn’t want to leave a single puppy behind during this rescue! Once the man was certain that there were no more strays wandering around, he drove off with the pooches in the back of his truck. Although they seemed a little restless, none of them tried to jump out. When the man finally pulled up to his home, all five were present and accounted for. The investigation comes more than a decade after the policy was revoked, signaling a watershed moment for LGBTQ+ veterans. “Brave LGBTQ+ Americans have long volunteered to serve the country that they love,” said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, emphasizing the long-overdue efforts to rectify the injustices experienced by these service personnel. A study focused on 851 instances, with 96.8 percent qualifying for “relief,” resulting in honorable discharges for the great majority of veterans involved. A long-awaited victory for LGBTQ+ veterans Between 1994 and 2011, the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy prevented openly gay and lesbian military personnel from serving, resulting in the dismissal of over 13,000 people simply for their sexual orientation. While the program was overturned in 2011, the consequences of these discharges persisted, with many veterans still receiving discharge classifications that denied them full military benefits. Defense Secretary Austin underscored the importance of correcting these errors, adding that 96 percent of those reviewed now have an honorable discharge, a critical shift that allows them to receive benefits that they were previously denied. “Under President Biden’s leadership, the Department of Defense has taken extraordinary steps to redress the harms done by ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and other policies on these former Service members,” Austin said in a statement. Thuy Le, PhD, David Mendez, PhD, and Kenneth Warner, PhD, led the study, which calls into question the long-held idea that quitting exclusively benefits younger smokers. “We wanted to show that stopping smoking is beneficial at any age and provide an incentive for older people who smoke to quit,” explained Le. While smoking has been related to a variety of health issues, including cancer, heart disease, and stroke, the plea to quit has typically been aimed at young adults. This new study reminds us that seniors, too, can get considerable health benefits by quitting, even as late as age 75. How much life can you gain? The researchers generated life expectancy tables using data from many national sources, calculating how much longer people would live if they stopped smoking at various ages. Their findings were startling: as compared to those who had never smoked, those who quit smoking at ages 35, 45, 55, 65, or 75 gained an average of 8.0, 5.6, 3.4, 1.7, and 0.7 years of life, respectively. For older persons, the chances of gaining at least one more year of life after quitting were significant—23.4 percent for those stopping at 65 and 14.2 percent for those quitting at 75. Furthermore, almost 10 percent of persons who quit at 65 gained at least eight years of life, while 8 percent of those who quit at 75 gained at least four years. As Warner said, “The cessation benefit is not limited to young and middle-aged adults who smoke; this study demonstrates its applicability to seniors as well.” A wake-up call for older smokers The study provides strong evidence for urging elderly smokers to quit. While the benefits of stopping at a young age are well known, the latest data show that even in later life, the good impacts of quitting can be life-changing. These advances, albeit minor in absolute terms, account for a significant amount of a senior’s remaining life expectancy. The researchers hope that therapists will utilize this evidence to urge older smokers to quit. “The chance of extending life is substantial, and it’s never too late to benefit from quitting,” said Le.
