DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION—A migrant caravan is heading northward toward the United States a few weeks before Election Day, the results of which will almost undoubtedly spell changes for border enforcement policies, according to The Associated Press. A roughly 2,000-person-strong migrant caravan left southern Mexico on Sunday in hopes of reaching the U.S. in the coming days, according to the AP. The latest caravan is so far the largest since newly-elected Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum entered office in October. Among those in the caravan are individuals who expressed concern that a new administration in Washington, D.C., would lead to the end of a popular app that has allowed hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals to schedule appointments with Customs and Border Protection officials in hopes of entering the country. “That is what makes us fearful,” Joel Zambrano, a Venezuelan national, said to The Associated Press. “They say this could change because they could both close the CBP One appointment and all the services that are helping migrants.” The CBP One app was first created in October 2020, with the Biden-Harris administration dramatically expanding its use in January 2023. The popular app enables migrants to schedule appointments in order to obtain exemptions at ports of entry, and permits them to submit biometric data to federal immigration authorities in order to apply for travel authorization and obtain parole. More than 800,000 noncitizens scheduled appointments through the CBP One app from January 2023 through the end of August 2024, according to CBP. The Biden-Harris administration has additionally flown in more than half a million foreign nationals into the country via an initiative known as CHNV—a program that grants two-year parole to Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan nationals. Roughly 7.4 million migrants have illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border since the beginning of the Biden-Harris administration, according to the latest data from CBP. While the CBP One app and an election-year crackdown on illegal immigration by the Mexican government have helped keep migrants in southern Mexico, many are reportedly leaving the region due to a delay in asylum appointments and a lack of job opportunities. “The situation in my country is very bad, the president doesn’t do anything for us. We spent a week by the border, but getting documents takes time,” Honduran Roberto Domínguez said to The Associated Press. “The documents we get are only for us to be in Tapachula and we cannot leave the city.” Despite an attempt to brand herself as more of a border hawk since launching her presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris has consistently polled poorly with voters on border enforcement issues following her administration’s oversight of a historical border crisis. A bride's dad dropped and fell to the ground during the father-daughter dance, making for a frightening scene, but things lined up perfectly to save his life. Many people refer to their wedding as the happiest day of their life. However, for one family, one wedding took a decidedly different and scary turn. Father-Daughter Dance Turns From Happy, Joyous to Scary and Frightening According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Brad Carver and his daughter, Emily Alvarez, who had just gotten hitched, were celebrating the happy occasion with the traditional father-daughter dance when disaster struck. The outlet reports that Brad and Emily were wowing family and friends with a choreographed dance routine to Taylor Swift's "You Need to Calm Down" when Brad fell to the ground about a minute into their number. Things Were In The Perfect Position To Save Brad’s Life After Brad tumbled to the floor, those guests quickly administered and applied life-saving maneuvers, including CPR and a defibrillator. Additionally, The Herald-Tribune points out that because the reception’s location was public, an AED defibrillator was required to be on site. If it had been private, there was a chance. They kept Emily's big day from being a horrible, awful one she would never forget. Emily understands the outcome could have easily been much different. "Unfortunately, it happened on my wedding day, but fortunately, it happened on my wedding day because everyone lined up perfectly to save his life," Emily said in a video posted on Facebook. Brad and Emily Have Been Changed By The Scary Moment For Brad, that frightening situation has completely changed how he views life. "It's stunning," Brad said. "I died, came back to life, and it's given me a different perspective on life." After nearly losing her father, Emily has some advice for everyone and a newfound appreciation for the fragility of life. "Take advantage of having your father with you," she said. "Whether that be a parent or your father or your mother, just to celebrate their life and love them." It is believed the population of the United States is estimated to be around 334 million people. So 93 million / 334 million = 27.8% of the population that could be newly exempted from paying federal income tax. That’s a huge number. Now add to that the amount of people who already don’t pay federal income tax (40%): And you get a grand total of 67.8% of Americans paying no federal income tax under a second President Trump Administration. Folks, it’s not that much of a stretch from that point to simply eliminate the IRS altogether! And that sure lines up perfectly with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy coming in to cut 90% of the Federal Government, don’t you think? The two agencies I would cut on Day 1 would be the IRS and whatever Hellish Department runs the TSA….I suppose that would be Department of Homeland Services? Cut, cut and cut!! CNBC had more details on the new analysis: Former President Donald Trump’s tax reform ideas could offer total or partial income tax exemptions to roughly 93.2 million Americans, or just under half of the U.S. electorate, according to CNBC’s analysis of several estimates. As part of his economic pitch to voters, Trump has floated a sweeping tax overhaul, including a slate of income tax breaks. So far, the Republican presidential nominee has officially proposed eliminating income tax on tips and Social Security benefits, along with overtime pay. And last week, in an interview on the sports media site OutKick, Trump said he would consider tax exemptions for firefighters, police officers, military personnel and veterans. If implemented, those exemptions would impact tens of millions of taxpayers. Roughly 68 million Americans receive Social Security benefits each month, according to the Social Security Administration. And in 2023, about 4 million workers were in tipped jobs, according to an estimate from Yale University’s Budget Lab. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approximated in March 2023 that there were 18.6 million living veterans. There are 1.3 million active-duty military personnel, according to the Department of Defense. And there are 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers and roughly 500,000 paid firefighters. Taken together, these reforms could leave about 93.2 million people off the hook for at least a portion, if not all, of their income taxes. That accounts for about 38% of the 244 million Americans eligible to vote in 2024. This total excludes the many more people who would be exempt from part of their income taxes if Trump executed his proposed elimination of taxes on overtime pay. These exemptions are part of Trump’s larger vision to transition away from the income tax system and replace it with the revenue he says would be generated by his hardline tariff proposals. Trump has pledged to impose a 20% universal tariff on all imports from all countries with a specific 60% rate for Chinese imports. Given that tariffs are paid by U.S. importers and those costs have historically been passed on to consumers, Trump’s strategy would likely end up replacing income taxes with a kind of invisible sales tax. “In the old days when we were smart, when we were a smart country, in the 1890s and all, this is when the country was relatively the richest it ever was. It had all tariffs. It didn’t have an income tax,” Trump said at a sit-down with voters in New York on Friday for “Fox & Friends.” “Now we have income taxes, and we have people that are dying.” Analysts see Trump’s scheme to move away from income taxes as something of a pipe dream. Domestic Producers - Trump floated the idea of lowering the corporate tax rate to 15% for companies that produce goods in the United States, which isn't directly an income tax exemption for individuals but aims at incentivizing domestic production. Families Benefiting from TCJA - While not a new proposal for his second term, making the individual tax cuts from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) permanent would continue to affect middle-class families by keeping their tax rates lower. However, this isn't specifically "no income tax" but rather reduced income tax. Estate Tax Modifications - Although this relates more to inheritance, Trump's plans included proposals to cap the estate and gift tax rate at no higher than 20% or make the higher exemptions from TCJA permanent, which indirectly affects individuals inheriting estates by potentially reducing or eliminating the tax on estates. Universal Savings Account Contributors - Although not directly an income tax exemption, Trump has supported the idea of allowing contributions to universal savings accounts with tax-free withdrawals, which could be seen as a tax benefit for savers.
