Former President Donald Trump visited Monday parts of western North Carolina ravaged by Hurricane Helene, praising the community response to the devastating storm.  During a stop in Swannanoa, Trump thanked first responders and promised to help rebuild the region after widespread flooding and mudslides caused by Helene. The storm’s death toll has surpassed 230 across the Southeast, including nearly 100 people in North Carolina alone.  “What happened to this neighborhood, and the communities all across North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Virginia, Tennessee, was an act of absolute devastation,” Trump said. “All of America shares your sorrow and your grief over the past few weeks. This region has seen an extraordinary hardship. But in the midst of such terrible tragedy, we have also seen the extraordinary love that binds us together as Americans.” Trump thanked the community for banding together after the storm, saying that “nothing is more inspiring than to see the American spirit triumph over adversity with the most selfless acts of generosity and love.” During his remarks, Trump talked about 51-year-old firefighter Tony Ray Garrison of Fairview, North Carolina, who was killed by a mudslide alongside his nephew as they attempted to help storm victims.  “In the wake of this horrible storm, many Americans in this region felt helpless, and abandoned, and left behind by their government. And yet, in North Carolina’s hour of desperation, the American people answered the call, much more so than your federal government, unfortunately,” Trump said.  Trump also brought up Adam Smith, a former Army Green Beret, who has used his helicopter to help rescue those in western North Carolina who were trapped after Helene came through. Smith thanked Trump for coming and visiting, saying it would help people not to forget about the region.  “To have you here, to have an opportunity to have this conversation on a national level, will keep western North Carolina on the map, and not leave the communities holding the bag on the back end of this,” Smith said.  Brian Burpeau, the owner of Swannanoa automotive shop, Diamondback 4×4, said his entire shop was flooded.  “We’ve lost bridges, we’ve lost businesses, we lost homes, we’ve lost people,” he said. “The devastation here is just not anything I would have ever imagined.”  Trump was accompanied at the event by Senator Ted Budd, who said it would take years to rebuild the region after Helene. The former president has raised around $8 million for those impacted by the storm, of which $7 million has already been distributed. 

An employee at the University of California Los Angeles was filmed ripping down posters — put up to advertise Ben Shapiro’s speech on Monday — just hours before the Daily Wire editor emeritus was scheduled to take the stage at his alma mater. Last week, university bureaucrats forced YAF to shut down its Eventbrite page, where people could acquire tickets for Shapiro’s speech, and forced YAF to redirect attendees to UCLA’s main ticketing office, RedState reported. According to RedState, UCLA taking over the ticketing means YAF cannot know in advance “if people who are known agitators or security threats are registering, or what efforts are being made to ensure that a bunch of lefties don’t gobble up the 1,200 available tickets then no-show the free event.” UCLA has also rejected YAF’s request for a standby line, which would help the group ensure that those who want to attend the event can get in while preventing leftist students from filling the event space and then staging a massive walkout. YAF’s lawyers wrote a letter to UCLA, stating, “When pressed, UCLA has not stated any reason whatsoever for this unreasonable stance, other than to cite to its own policy number 862, which simply states that for ‘major events,’ (i.e., events presenting disfavored points of view that may result in counter-protests), ‘[n]o standby line will be allowed unless advance approval [is] provided by UCLA Fire Department and with limited standby Tickets offered,’ without providing any justification for this limitation or explanation as to why approval has not been given in this particular case.” MATT WALSH’S ‘AM I RACIST?’ COMING TO DAILYWIRE+ OCT. 28 “Given UCLA’s past conduct discriminating against the expression of conservative and pro-Israel points of view … it is clear that the refusal to approve the use of the standby line procedure exacerbates the unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination that UCLA engages in,” the letter continues. “Moreover, UCLA owes a constitutional duty to impose only reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions on speech. There is nothing reasonable about UCLA’s refusal to approve a procedure that has been used by all of its peers in the university community to great effect, and without any appreciable harm to any university’s interests.” Shapiro blasted UCLA in a thread posted to X on Monday, writing that it “has forgotten what it’s supposed to be” and is plagued by “scandals of plagiarism, DEI, riots, furries, BDSM, womxn, and ‘monsterf***ers.” Tonight, I’ll take the stage at UCLA. Deroy Murdock warned on Monday that if current polls are any indication, the Democrats could be in real trouble with black voters come Election Day. Murdock cited a recent New York Times/Siena poll that showed Trump polling over 20% with black voters — outstripping his numbers from both 2020 and 2016 — and showing a real weakness in Democrat support as the 2024 election reached its final days. Black voters constitute such a big part of the Democratic base, you take that out, the whole thing sort of falls over,” Murdock said. “And this is the result of a very simple question that President Trump has asked black voters since 2016: ‘What the hell do you have to lose?'” “They’ve responded to that question thinking, well, we keep voting Democrat and things don’t seem to get better,” Murdock continued, noting that Trump had gone from 8% of the black vote in 2016 to 12% in 2020 and appeared to be nearing 24% going into the last two weeks of the 2024 election cycle. “If that sticks at Election Day, the Democrats are going to be in very big trouble.” The writing has been on the wall for weeks, with even CNN pollster Harry Enten sounding the alarm last week as Harris has continued to hemorrhage support from black men in particular. Things got so bad that Harris brought in former President Barack Obama to tip the scales, and his solution was to scold black men for not offering their blind support to the Democratic nominee, despite the fact that the party leadership had dropped her on them rather than allowing the people to vote on her. CNN Republican pundit Scott Jennings weighed in on that scenario, arguing that simply yelling at black men wasn’t likely to convince many of them to throw their support behind Harris. “Obama, specifically, when he was having trouble with rural voters in Pennsylvania, go back all the way into his campaigns, he insulted them about their culture and values,” Jennings said at the time. “I don’t think it’s helpful to insult a group of people who are already not enthusiastic about your campaign, but I think that’s what he did today.”

The Biden Department of Justice is trying to prevent the Commonwealth of Virginia from purging noncitizens from its voter rolls. That’s right: less than one month before the November presidential election, the Justice Department has sued the commonwealth for attempting to stop individuals who have refused to verify their citizenship from voting. All Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin did was comply with a 2006 state law, created by none other than then-Democratic Governor (and former Hillary Clinton vice presidential running mate) Tim Kaine, mandating the commonwealth remove noncitizens from its voting rolls. Yet, to the Biden DOJ, enforcing it is the equivalent of disenfranchisement. In a statement, Youngkin labeled the Justice Department’s lawsuit an “unprecedented lawsuit” created with the aim of impacting the results of the upcoming election. While his concerns about the DOJ’s suit potentially impacting the November election results are fair, characterizing it as “unprecedented” is a stretch. The Justice Department has routinely engaged in similar acts of political posturing over the last 44 months. Most of the public is aware of many Republicans’ concerns about how the Biden-Harris administration has — in the words of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) — “weaponized” the Department of Justice against former President Donald Trump. In short, the DOJ is pursuing criminal charges against him for allegedly mishandling classified documents despite being unwilling to pursue charges against President Biden for what appeared to be strikingly similar actions. Few, however, know that the Biden DOJ seemingly continues to play politics with the law in the weeks before the upcoming election. For example, in September, the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board accused the Biden DOJ of helping the Biden-Harris administration find a scapegoat for today’s high housing and rent prices by suing landlords’ pricing software. It is intimated that the technology is responsible for today’s inflated home and apartment costs. However, the Wall Street Journal’s Editorial Board believes that “what’s really going on here” is not a DOJ endeavoring to stop landlord price-gouging but a DOJ that is attempting “to distract voters from frustration over the Biden Administration’s inflationary policies.” With housing inflation continuing to skyrocket and the largest rent increases coming in swing states, many scholars agree with its assessment. It’s similar to how the administration previously blamed “shrinkflation” for food price spikes, Vladimir Putin for gas cost increases, and landlords for elevated rental rates. The Biden DOJ also appears intent on working overtime to normalize the administration’s woke, social justice warrior-friendly agenda through the justice system. It has initiated many lawsuits against police and fire departments for having “racist” written examinations because minorities are failing them at higher rates and “sexist” physical fitness requirements because women have been passing them in lower numbers when compared to men. These DOJ suits make the Biden-Harris administration smile, but it would make anyone with a sound understanding of the law gasp. MATT WALSH’S ‘AM I RACIST?’ COMING TO DAILYWIRE+ OCT. 28 The Biden DOJ has also acted against states implementing laws that restrict access to “gender-affirming care” for minors. For example, it sued Tennessee over its law banning gender procedures for minors, claiming it violated federal civil rights. In a hat tip to the Administration’s ongoing socialistic-esque war on “big” companies, the Justice Department is also speaking softly and using a big regulatory stick against many private sector companies merely for being popular and efficient. The most recent example is its September lawsuit against Visa, in which it is suing the company for supposedly monopolizing the debit card market even though consumers are overwhelmed with so many choices for debit cards and have been for nearly two decades. Many of them just prefer Visa’s offerings. However, the Biden-Harris administration, which rescinded the consumer welfare standard — a longstanding antitrust standard that ensured the government only interceded when consumers faced higher prices or worse quality services — believes that the mere act of being a big company is often reason enough for the government to get involved. And in the last 44 months, the DOJ and FTC have adjusted their interpretation of the nation’s antitrust laws accordingly. It is a shame that the DOJ — once one of the country’s most apolitical and trusted institutions— has become nothing more than a political arm of the executive branch, but that is the reality that Americans face today. They wake up with near-weekly reminders that there appears to be one set of laws for those caught in the Biden-Harris administration’s crosshairs and one set for everyone else. This isn’t just wrong; it’s anti-American. The American experiment hinges upon the Republic retaining three separate but equal branches of government and the Justice Department enforcing federal law and administering justice through thick and thin. If the DOJ instead modifies its interpretations of the law to conform with its political appointers’ worldview and political ambitions, then soon, little will separate the United States from the authoritarian regimes that we are supposed to be better than.
