Kerry King reveals the hardest Slayer song to play

The guitarist Kerry King released this year his first solo album and Slayer also announced their reunion for a few festival dates. During a session of questions and answers with Metal Hammer, King was asked which is the hardest song to play. Kerry King reveals the hardest Slayer song to play According to the guitarist, the song "Dittohead", released on the band's 1994 album "Divine Intervention", is the hardest one to play. “I could go a number of ways with that [question],” says King, “but I’ll say Dittohead for the sheer speed of it. That’s probably our fastest song, and it’s not one I’m looking to play live any time soon!” [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gvyq6xYPwos&pp=ygUJZGl0dG9oZWFk[/embed] He was also questioned about which was his favorite guitar riff of the band and he chose the classic "Raining Blood", from the 1986 album "Reign In Blood". “That’s difficult. I have to say Raining Blood ,” he answers. “It’s not just one riff in that song, but a whole showcase. If you pushed me, I’d say the intro too, as people still sing along to that guitar line,” Kerry King said. Slayer was formed by Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo in Los Angeles, California back in 1981. The band's current line-up has King, Araya, the drummer Paul Bostaph and the guitarist Gary Holt. During their career, the band released 12 studio albums and sold millions of records worldwide. They are part of the "Big Four of Thrash Metal", which also has Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. The post Kerry King reveals the hardest Slayer song to play appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Paul Stanley recalled how the idea of Gene spitting fire started

Kiss was not only known for their music but also for their incredible live shows, which featured many special effects and iconic moments, like when Gene Simmons spits fire and then pours fake blood. The band did that for decades when they were wearing make up, until their retirement in 2023. In an interview with Steve-O (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar), the musician recalled how the idea started. According to him it was their late manager Bill Aucoin who had the idea. Paul Stanley recalled how the idea of Gene spitting fire started "We went up to Bill's office, our manager's office. We're not much more than kids, and we walk into Bill's office, and there's a guy there that we don't know. Bill goes, 'This is Amaze-o the Magician,' or something. And we're like, 'OK.'" "And the guy blows this big fireball out of his mouth and scorches the ceiling, and Bill says, 'Who wants to do it?' And I go, 'Not me!' God bless Gene, he goes, 'I'll do it.' And that was the start of the fire breathing." "He was using lamp oil, kerosene, all kinds of things that are good for you," Stanley joked. "I mean, you don't have to swallow it, because just by the fact that you have absorbing tissue, it's going into your body. You don't have to take a swig of it, it's going. So luckily, Gene never grew a third head… or even a second head," Paul Stanley said. After 50 years on the road Kiss came to an end in 2023 playing their final shows at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, city where the band was formed. Paul Stanley still didn't played as a solo artist, but since the beginning of 2024 his former bandmate Gene Simmons is touring all over the world as a solo act with his own band. His setlist is mainly formed by Kiss songs with him on vocals, besides some other covers of famous bands. Alex Van Halen says the Sammy Hagar tour is not doing the band’s catalog justice

The legendary Van Halen co-founder and drummer Alex Van Halen is currently promoting his new book called "Brothers", which talks about him, his late brother Eddie Van Halen and of course, their band until 1985 when David Lee Roth left the group. That's when the book ends and he explained that he preferred to focus on that era because it really was when the magic happened. He said in recent interviews that the real magic was really between the brothers and Roth, not even mentioning Hagar's name on the book or in the interviews. But he was asked in an interview with Billboard about the current Sammy Hagar tour with Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Kenny Aronoff. Besides performing Montrose and Sammy solo songs, the setlist is quite focused on the Van Hagar era. Alex simply answer that they can do whatever they want but they are not doing the band's justice. Alex Van Halen says the Sammy Hagar tour is not doing the band's catalog justice “I’m not interested. They’re not doing the band justice. They can do what they want to do. That’s not my business.” Alex said he is not interested because Sammy publicly invited him to join them on tour since the Eddie Van Halen tribute tour was not going to happen. But the vocalist also noted during the past year that he hasn't talked with Alex for 20 years already and during the past years he tried to call and text the drummer but he never returned his calls. He talked about that in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock in 2024. “Mike and I reached out to Alex before we did this. We reached out to him a dozen times before this tour, in every way. E-mail, text message, phone call, message on the machine, okay? No response. No response. I mean, we made every offer to get together or to just talk or to have breakfast, lunch or dinner.” “Go to the studio and play. Come to my house or I’ll come to your house. Go ride horses, go sit on the beach. What do you want to do? Let’s just do something. Let’s get together. And nothing. When the tour came, the first person we called and left all of the messages, sent all of emails, it was Alex Van Halen. Mike and I said, ‘We’re wanting to do this thing.’ Alex’s famous line to me (decades ago) [was], ‘Sammy, we ain’t getting any younger.'” He continued: “Mike and I said, ‘Alex, we ain’t getting any younger. We’re going out and playing for the people. We’re going to go honor the Van Halen catalog. Let’s just get together and let’s talk about it. Mike and I, we’re going out, we’re going to do this, Alex. Please join us. Let’s be friends, let’s bury the hatchet, whatever.’ There was no response.” “I was saying, ‘He’ll come to a show, he’s got to in L.A. or something. I’m sure he’ll come.’ But no, no, he sold all of his equipment. That was his statement. That was like, ‘Nah, I ain’t coming nowhere,'” Sammy Hagar said. Billy Corgan praises Judas Priest and Metallica

Led by the singer, songwriter and guitarist Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins is certainly one of the most influential alternative rock bands from the past years. Although the band is not often seen as a heavy Rock band, they were extremely influenced by Metal bands and Corgan even praised Judas Priest, Metallica and other bands in an interview with Allison Hagendorf (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar) Billy Corgan praises Judas Priest and Metallica "I was blessed, I saw [Maiden on their first tour with Bruce Dickinson. I saw Metallica on 'Ride the Lightning' and Judas Priest in '82 at a racetrack on 'Screaming for Vengeance' tour. (Then) I saw Accept opening for Iron Maiden. As it is commonly understood about me, I don't give a f**k what anybody thinks about music. Because most music thought is based on snobbery." "And the one thing that metal does, it reminds that not everybody cares about the snob vote, whether you're talking about Metallica, Rush, or Mötley Crüe. If you grew up in the world I grew up in, and so many people [to whom] that music speaks in a very visceral way, it's not supposed to be pretty. I mean, take Judas Priest. Here you have a closeted gay man in the '80s, who's going through all sorts of inner torment, scared that if he's outed, it might blow up his band, and somehow, through that inner struggle, he found an audience that accepted him for who he is." He continued: "I told Lars this when I was on his show, 'Fade to Black' by Metallica came out when my grandmother was dying of cancer. That song saved my life... When you've had those moments with rock, there's a loyalty between band and fan. When we started in the '80s, and started playing metal riffs in our alt-rock songs —I mean, the amount of snobbery that we got because [of it]." "And I don't want to name names, but some bands were flirting with metal stuff and doing a great job of it, but it was always kind of positioned as a bit ironic... Like 'This isn't who we are, because we don't want to get associated with all this stuff that people would commonly associate with at the time... Satan and misogyny [laughs]. We embraced [metal] in a way that made people uncomfortable, [and] I was like, 'This is great. I want to make these people uncomfortable. I really do.'" Bruce Dickinson’s opinion on Judas Priest and Rob Halford

Bruce Dickinson’s opinion on Judas Priest and Rob Halford

Although Judas Priest released their debut album in 1974 and by the late 70s already had five albums out, they are still mentioned as one of the bands of the "New Wave of The British Heavy Metal". The main reason is because in 1980 they released their most praised album "British Steel", which was certainly one of the most important Metal albums of all time. Around that time, many other incredible bands appeared, including Iron Maiden, which released their debut album in 1980. Two years later, they would become an even bigger phenomenon when they recorded the album "Number of the Beast" with the new singer Bruce Dickinson. Maiden and Priest even toured together in the early 80s, but what is Bruce Dickinson's opinion on the band and their vocalist Rob Halford? Bruce Dickinson’s opinion on Judas Priest and Rob Halford Although Judas Priest already was one of the most influential Heavy Metal bands in the world in the early 80s, Bruce still wasn't really into them. As he recalled in an interview with Qobuz in 2024 (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage). He was asked to give his comments on the album "British Steel" and he revealed that he really understood the band when he toured with them. "What can you say? Judas Priest. That's one of their best covers, they had very mixed (covers). I found their album covers confusing. (For example, 'Point of Entry', 'I'm like, what is this?' you know. That one (British Steel), you know what that is. That's obviously a Metal record, it's got an edge to it. It's got something to it." He continued: "For me, I actually really started getting into Priest when I toured with them, so I was quite late. I mean, I knew who they were, you know, 'Sad Wings of Destiny' and all that stuff. But I really understand what they were about, when I toured with them with Maiden." "It was on the 'Screaming for Vengeance' tour. God, what a record that was and then all that stuff before. I mean, Adrian (Smith) was very into Priest, more so than me. But then when I saw them live, I was like 'Yeah, these guys are really cool'," Bruce Dickinson said. The musician fronted for a few years some BBC Radio shows and one of them was  “Masters Of Rock” and in the website of the show, Dickinson listed the 15 essential albums that everyone should listen. One of them was "British Steel", which had great tracks like “Breaking The Law”, “Metal Gods”, “Living After Midnight” and “United”. He once criticized Rob Halford for using a teleprompter on stage [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXeNrl3MI-k&pp=ygUVYnJlYWtpbmcgdGhlIGxhdyAyMDI0[/embed] Anything done live is pretty hard, especially when you get older. So many singers like to have a teleprompter on stage with the lyrics just in case they forget any part. According to Dickinson, Halford uses one and he criticized the Judas Priest vocalist during his spoken-word performance back in 2020 in Hamburg, Germany. He said: “I don’t use an autocue on stage. A lot of singers now, they just have the words there: ‘Breaking the law, breaking the law.’ Breaking the what? ‘Breaking the law, breaking the law.'”The post Bruce Dickinson’s opinion on Judas Priest and Rob Halford appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
