Alex Van Halen is still unhappy that Eddie played with Michael Jackson

Alex Van Halen is currently promoting his new book called "Brothers" where he talked about him, his late brother Eddie Van Halen and of course their band. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the musician talked about many subjects, including the famous guitar solo Eddie recorded for Michael Jackson's "Beat It" back in 1982 for the album "Thriller". Alex believed they should never record with other artists outside the band because he believed that creativity was finite and they use all the material they had for their own group. Even now, he said he doesn't like that collaboration. Alex Van Halen is still not happy that Eddie worked with Michael Jackson At the time Alex told his brother not to collaborate with Michael Jackson, he believed it was better to have the Pop singer as a guest in a Van Halen track, for example. That ended up being something that motivated later on David Lee Roth to pursue a solo career. “Why would you lend your talents to Michael Jackson? I just don’t fucking get it. And the funny part was that Ed fibbed his way out of it by saying, ‘Oh, who knows that kid anyway?’ You made the mistake! Fess up. Don’t add insult to injury by acting stupid,” Alex Van Halen said. Curiously, two years later the album "Thriller" blocked Van Halen's "1984" from the top of the charts. Besides Eddie Van Halen, that Michael Jackson album had many other special guests and session players. Some of them were Steve Lukather, Michael's sisters Janet and La Toya, Paul McCartney, Steve Porcaro and Vincent Price. The record remains as the best-selling album of all time, having sold an estimated amount of more than 70 million copies worldwide. Van Halen, for example, sold an estimated amount of more than 80 million records worldwide with their entire discography. Alex Van Halen explains why Roth ruined Eddie’s tribute tour

Alex Van Halen explains why Roth ruined Eddie’s tribute tour

Since Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020 at the age of 65, rumors of a possible reunion tour as a tribute to the late artist have surfaced. In his first interview since his brother's death, Alex Van Halen revealed that it was David Lee Roth who ruined the reunion because he refused and became angry when Alex suggested they should show old footage of Eddie and acknowledge him during the shows. According to Alex, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Roth simply didn't want to pay tribute to Eddie at the concerts at all. As a result, they had a disagreement, and the entire project was scrapped that day. When asked by the magazine about the situation, Roth declined to comment. Alex Van Halen explained why Roth ruined Eddie's tribute tour Alex said their rehearsal began with two Roth band members serving as "seat fillers" and the idea would be to eventually bring in Joe Satriani and maybe the classic bassist Michael Anthony. After a conversation with Queen's Brian May, about how the band works without Freddie Mercury but also paying tribute to him, Alex went to explain to Roth how they would pay tribute to Alex during the shows. In those early rehearsals, the drummer was feeling numbness, peripheral neuropathy, especially in his feet and he said he felt like it was an "omen from above", which was warning him that the reunion shouldn't happen. “The thing that broke the camel’s back, and I can be honest about this now was I said, ‘Dave, at some point, we have to have a very overt — not a bowing — but an acknowledgment of Ed in the gig. If you look at how Queen does it, they show old footage.’ And the moment I said we gotta acknowledge Ed, Dave fuckin’ popped a fuse.… The vitriol that came out was unbelievable.” According to Alex, Roth found the idea very offensive, for reasons he can't comprehend. So the drummer said he was displeased: [embed class="is-loading"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VREI1t4BN4o[/embed] “I’m from the street. You talk to me like that, motherfucker, I’m gonna beat your fucking brains out. You got it?’ And I mean that. And that’s how it ended. It’s just, my God. It’s like I didn’t know him anymore. I have nothing but the utmost respect for his work ethic and all that. But, Dave, you gotta work as a community, motherfucker. It’s not you alone anymore.” “It’s too bad on one hand, but it’s fine on the other (that it didn't happen). Because now, in retrospect, playing the old songs is not really paying tribute to anybody. That’s just like a jukebox, in my opinion.… To find a replacement for Ed? It’s just not the same.” He is still in touch with Roth but doesn't mention Sammy Hagar Although the disagreement happened, Alex says he is still in touch with Roth. About the vocalist recently criticizing Alex's son, calling him "this fucking kid", Alex said: “To me, it’s a sign of respect that he actually thinks that Wolfie’s on the same level as the old master Dave, right? The other thing is that Wolf can easily take care of himself. It’s not a problem.” Alex didn't even mention Sammy Hagar's name in the interview or in the book "Brothers" he will release soon, according to Rolling Stone. He said: “The heart and the soul and the creativity and the magic was Dave, Ed, Mike, and me.” In the book, he refers to other Van Halen eras with the phrase: "We had a lot of other singers over the years". But he doesn't mention Sammy. The post Alex Van Halen explains why Roth ruined Eddie’s tribute tour appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Alex Van Halen wants Robert Plant to finish unreleased songs

The legendary Van Halen co-founder and drummer Alex Van Halen is currently promoting his new book "Brothers" which will tell the story of him, his late brother Alex Van Halen and of course, their band. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the first one after his brother's passing, he revealed they have a lot of unreleased material. Some of it will come out with the book but he said that he has plans for other releases and he even reached out to OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT to see if they could analyze Eddie's playing and maybe help to generate new guitar solos. He also revealed that the singer he has in mind to complete the vocals on those recordings is Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant. Alex Van Halen wants Robert Plant to finish unreleased Van Halen songs “They’re all little pieces (of unreleased music). A bunch of licks don’t make a song. (I asked OpenAI if they could analyze) the patterns of how Edward would have played something (to generate new guitar solos) .Ideally, it’d be Robert Plant (for the vocals). You’re gonna think I’m out of my fucking mind. But when conditions are right, things will manifest.” However, the drummer said he hasn't talked with Robert Plant since 1993. Alex is also working on a possible biopic of the band During the past decade many successful biographical movies about bands were released, like the ones from Queen, Elton John and Mötley Crüe. Alex Van Halen revealed in the same conversation he is also working on that said there is no hurry for it, since the Queen movie, for example. “It’s just a long-term plan. I mean, to put things in perspective, the Queen movie took 30 years to make.” He is a good friend of the Queen guitarist Brian May and even called him when he was thinking about a possible Van Halen tribute tour for Eddie. He wanted to know how the band worked regarding Freddie Mercury's legacy and how they paid tribute to him during the shows. Alex says Van Halen almost recorded with Ozzy and Chris Cornell

The legendary drummer Alex Van Halen gave his first interview after Eddie Van Halen's in 2020 at the age of 65. The musician is currently promoting his new book called "Brothers" that will tell from his point of view the incredible story of him, Eddie and the band Van Halen. According to Rolling Stone, he doesn't even mention Sammy Hagar's name in the book and says the band's creative force always was him, Eddie and David Lee Roth. But he also revealed in the interview with the magazine that the group almost recorded with two other legendary vocalists: Ozzy Osbourne and Chris Cornell. Alex Van Halen says the band almost recorded with Ozzy Osbourne and Chris Cornell Back in 2001 the band sat down with Ozzy Osbourne's wife and manager Sharon Osbourne and were planning to make an album with the former Black Sabbath vocalist. "When you get a dog, you don’t expect it to be a cat. When you get an Ozzy, you get Ozzy. Play the music, he’ll sing, and it’s gonna be great,” Alex Van Halen said. However, when they were about to start to work together, the Ozzy's family accepted MTV's offer for the reality show "The Osbournes". The Black Sabbath co-founder even talked with Rolling Stone about that. He said: “Yes, we were discussing it. It is something that if it had come to fruition, would have been phenomenal. Eddie and Alex were great friends of mine for a very long time and it’s a regret of mine that we never got it together. The Osbournes got in the way of creating new music at that time, unfortunately.” As Alex Van Halen revealed in the interview, the group almost recorded with the late legendary Soundgarden and Audioslave vocalist Chris Cornell as well. He can't precise when it was but it was shortly before Cornell's death. The singer first jammed with Alex and Eddie and later on only with Alex. “Chris was in a very fragile part of his life, so to speak. I got behind the drums, and he started playing bass. We played for 45 minutes. This motherfucker got so into it he started bleeding. I said, ‘This is the man you want.’ And then he died.”The post Alex says Van Halen almost recorded with Ozzy and Chris Cornell appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

What was Kurt Cobain’s opinion on Sex Pistols

What was Kurt Cobain’s opinion on Sex Pistols

The late legendary singer, guitarist and songwriter Kurt Cobain was certainly one of the most important musicians of the past decades. Although Nirvana was active only from 1987 to 1994, until Kurt's tragic death, they really changed the whole Rock and Roll music scene with the release of their groundbreaking album "Nevermind" in 1991. They were undoubtedly the Grunge band that made the biggest impact on the music scene, influencing countless groups over the decades. Their influence has even been compared to the seismic effect the Sex Pistols had on music in the late '70s. But what did Kurt Cobain think of the British Punk Rock group? What was Kurt Cobain's opinion on Sex Pistols Kurt Cobain was really a big fan of the Sex Pistols and besides praising them many times also said they were a really important influence for him. For example, in a TV interview back in the 90s he was asked how important the Punk Rock group was. His answer was: "How important they were? As important as Led Zeppelin or any big Rock band. (...) Besides the hype the music was great". Talking with Jessica Adams back in 1992, he said that Punk was still his favorite kind of music and that the Sex Pistols were still an influence. "Oh, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, any '77 Punk Rock band from mid-to-late seventies was totally influential on my music. It's still our favorite form of music." He continued: [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKOIQfp4-eY&pp=ygUHZW1pIHNleA%3D%3D[/embed] "Even though we grew up in the Hardcore generation of the early 80s and were subjected to a lot of, I guess I should say 'bullshit' underground music. Like Hardcore, something I've never really liked, the straight edge hardcore scene. So we, at the time, while pretending to be Punk rockers at our youthful age, we were listening to anti-Hardcore bands. (Some of them) like Flipper and the Butthole Surfers and Scratch Acid. We weren't necessarily into all these real heavy politic ideals." Sex Pistols inspired "Nevermind" in terms of songwriting according to Kurt Cobain Curiously, Nirvana's most important album "Nevermind" borrowed one word from the Sex Pistols' only studio album. The Grunge band didn't confirm that about the title, but Kurt said that they were inspired in terms of songs. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 1994, he said that he decided to put all the greatest songs he had at the time on Nevermind. He was inspired by other albums that also were packed with amazing tracks. One of the records mentioned was from the British punk group. "It just kind of pisses me off to know that we work really hard to make an entire album’s worth of songs that are as good as we can make them. I’m gonna stroke my ego by saying that we’re better than a lot of bands out there. What I’ve realized is that you only need a couple of catchy songs on an album. The rest can be bullshit Bad Company rip-offs, and it doesn’t matter." "If I was smart, I would have saved most of the songs off Nevermind. (Then) spread them out over a 15-year period. But I can’t do that. All the albums I ever liked were albums that delivered a great song, one after another. Aerosmith‘s Rocks, the Sex Pistols‘ Never Mind the Bollocks, Led Zeppelin II, Back in Black, by AC/DC," Kurt Cobain said. Over the years, Cobain explained that he felt that Punk Rock expressed his feelings about politics and social life. Something that according to him he couldn’t find in Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith. The post What was Kurt Cobain’s opinion on Sex Pistols appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Customers bought all this store's donuts early each morning so a loyal husband could visit his wife in the hospital

For almost 30 years, John Chhan and his wife, Stella, have been serving customers their fresh donuts. But for the past month, Stella's been absent. The Chhans came to the U.S. as refugees from Cambodia in 1979. They opened a donut shop called Donut City in Seal Beach, and the duo has been doling out delicious daily donuts ever since. But last month, Stella stopped showing up behind the counter. She'd suffered a brain aneurysm, and though she survived, she was very weak and slowly recovering in a rehab facility. That meant that John Chhan had run the shop alone and be away from his sick wife. When customers learned of the situation, they wanted to do something to help. Some offered to set up a GoFundMe account, but Chhan declined. He said he simply wanted more time with his wife. So Donut City customers embarked on a different mission: to help Chhan sell out his inventory as quickly as possible each day. Customers rally bright and early every morning to buy out Chhan's donuts so he can be with his sick wife. Through word of mouth, online, and in community newsletters, Donut City customers are encouraging people to buy donuts early and buy lots of them. Customers show up when the shop opens at 4:30am, and thanks to many of them buying a dozen donuts at at time, the trays are empty by 7:30 most days. Locals say they're simply returning the kindness the Chhans have shown them over the years. Lifelong Donut City customer Steven O'Fallon shared his feelings with CNN."It is heartbreaking to hear her misfortune," he said. "She was always in the back making doughnuts. I would drop by there with my mom and dad in the mornings before school. John would always toss a few extra doughnut holes. He always has a smile on his face." This is what community showing up looks like. John Chhan told ABC7 news that the he appreciates the outpouring of support from the community and that it feels "very warm." He is happy to be able to leave the shop early and spend more time with his wife as she recovers. Stella is making good progress, by the way. “She can talk, she can write,” Chhan told CBS affiliate KCAL news. “Right now she’s trying to start…eat something.” Is there anything sweeter than people helping people?
