Testing the equipment on an interstellar mission is one of the first things operators do when the spacecraft successfully launches. In some cases, those tests show the future troubles the mission will face, such as what happened to NASA’s Lucy mission a few years ago. However, in some cases, the mission provides us with perspectives we might never have seen before, which was the case for Hera, ESA’s mission to Dimorphos. This asteroid was deflected successfully during NASA’s DART test in 2022. Hera was successfully launched on October 7th and carries a series of instruments designed to peer at the asteroids using different wavelengths. Some instruments were turned toward the Earth and Moon from about a million km away as part of the mission’s Near-Earth Commissioning Phase. The resulting pictures showcase the spacecraft’s capabilities and provide a new perspective of our “terraqueous globe,” as Carl Sagan once put it, and our much more sterile neighbor. First, we have an image from the Asteroid Framing Camera or AFC. Technically comprised of two cameras (for redundancy, as so many space missions do), this monochrome 1020×1020 image is the clearest of the three released by ESA as part of a press release. It gives a sense of the scale of the distance between the Earth and the Moon, which can be hard to judge when down on the planet’s surface. This one was taken slightly closer, at 1.4 million kilometers away (about three times the distance from the Earth to the Moon itself). TIRI is designed to capture infrared wavelengths of light – which we usually think of as heat. Watching Dimorphos over time will allow it to understand the “thermal inertia” of certain regions, which scientists can use to discern some important physical properties of the asteroid. While not the most exciting space image ever captured, the successful operation of this sensitive instrument is critical to the mission. It, too, is designed to capture Dimorphos in wavelengths that humans can’t visibly see – in this case, 650 nm to 950 nm wavelengths, which is considered “near infrared” as compared to the “mid-infrared” capabilities of TIRI. Also, this imager comes with its own false color depiction, showing “shorter” wavelengths, which are closer to our visible spectrum, as shades of blue, whereas “reds” represent wavelengths farther away from visible light.  Image of Earth (bottom left) and Moon from Hera’s Hyperscout H imager.Credit – ESA The Earth and Moon have been imaged most likely millions of times in these wavelengths before, so it’s unlikely that any science will be gleaned from these images. Still, these images are invaluable as proof of concept for the operation of the systems. The three cameras comprise some of the essential parts of Hera’s “asteroid deck,” which houses most of the spacecraft’s other instruments, including two CubeSat deployers, a laser rangefinder, and antennas for deep-space communication with Earth. Many of those different instruments will have to wait until “show time” when the craft arrives at the binary asteroid system in December 2026. Alex Van Halen is currently promoting his new book called "Brothers" where he talked about him, his late brother Eddie Van Halen and of course their band. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the musician talked about many subjects, including the famous guitar solo Eddie recorded for Michael Jackson's "Beat It" back in 1982 for the album "Thriller". Alex believed they should never record with other artists outside the band because he believed that creativity was finite and they use all the material they had for their own group. Even now, he said he doesn't like that collaboration. Alex Van Halen is still not happy that Eddie worked with Michael Jackson At the time Alex told his brother not to collaborate with Michael Jackson, he believed it was better to have the Pop singer as a guest in a Van Halen track, for example. That ended up being something that motivated later on David Lee Roth to pursue a solo career. “Why would you lend your talents to Michael Jackson? I just don’t fucking get it. And the funny part was that Ed fibbed his way out of it by saying, ‘Oh, who knows that kid anyway?’ You made the mistake! Fess up. Don’t add insult to injury by acting stupid,” Alex Van Halen said. Curiously, two years later the album "Thriller" blocked Van Halen's "1984" from the top of the charts. Besides Eddie Van Halen, that Michael Jackson album had many other special guests and session players. Some of them were Steve Lukather, Michael's sisters Janet and La Toya, Paul McCartney, Steve Porcaro and Vincent Price. The record remains as the best-selling album of all time, having sold an estimated amount of more than 70 million copies worldwide. Since Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020 at the age of 65, rumors of a possible reunion tour as a tribute to the late artist have surfaced. In his first interview since his brother's death, Alex Van Halen revealed that it was David Lee Roth who ruined the reunion because he refused and became angry when Alex suggested they should show old footage of Eddie and acknowledge him during the shows. According to Alex, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Roth simply didn't want to pay tribute to Eddie at the concerts at all. As a result, they had a disagreement, and the entire project was scrapped that day. When asked by the magazine about the situation, Roth declined to comment. Alex Van Halen explained why Roth ruined Eddie's tribute tour Alex said their rehearsal began with two Roth band members serving as "seat fillers" and the idea would be to eventually bring in Joe Satriani and maybe the classic bassist Michael Anthony. After a conversation with Queen's Brian May, about how the band works without Freddie Mercury but also paying tribute to him, Alex went to explain to Roth how they would pay tribute to Alex during the shows. In those early rehearsals, the drummer was feeling numbness, peripheral neuropathy, especially in his feet and he said he felt like it was an "omen from above", which was warning him that the reunion shouldn't happen. “The thing that broke the camel’s back, and I can be honest about this now was I said, ‘Dave, at some point, we have to have a very overt — not a bowing — but an acknowledgment of Ed in the gig. If you look at how Queen does it, they show old footage.’ And the moment I said we gotta acknowledge Ed, Dave fuckin’ popped a fuse.… The vitriol that came out was unbelievable.” According to Alex, Roth found the idea very offensive, for reasons he can't comprehend. It’s just not the same.” He is still in touch with Roth but doesn't mention Sammy Hagar Although the disagreement happened, Alex says he is still in touch with Roth. About the vocalist recently criticizing Alex's son, calling him "this fucking kid", Alex said: “To me, it’s a sign of respect that he actually thinks that Wolfie’s on the same level as the old master Dave, right? The other thing is that Wolf can easily take care of himself. It’s not a problem.” Alex didn't even mention Sammy Hagar's name in the interview or in the book "Brothers" he will release soon, according to Rolling Stone. He said: “The heart and the soul and the creativity and the magic was Dave, Ed, Mike, and me.” In the book, he refers to other Van Halen eras with the phrase: "We had a lot of other singers over the years". The legendary Van Halen co-founder and drummer Alex Van Halen is currently promoting his new book "Brothers" which will tell the story of him, his late brother Alex Van Halen and of course, their band. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the first one after his brother's passing, he revealed they have a lot of unreleased material. Some of it will come out with the book but he said that he has plans for other releases and he even reached out to OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT to see if they could analyze Eddie's playing and maybe help to generate new guitar solos. He also revealed that the singer he has in mind to complete the vocals on those recordings is Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant. (I asked OpenAI if they could analyze) the patterns of how Edward would have played something (to generate new guitar solos) .Ideally, it’d be Robert Plant (for the vocals).
