Homesteading Hounds: A Farmer’s Best Friend

When you’re living on a homestead, whether it is large or small, it’s a good idea to have a dog around. You’ll notice that almost all farmers have a dog or three running around – and it’s for a good reason too. Not only do dogs make great pets but homesteading hounds often have natural instincts and abilities which make them more suitable for certain jobs. For example: Dachshunds are said to be great ratters which are a wonderful thing when you’re growing food and pesky pests keep gnawing at your tomato roots. If you have ever known someone who owns a little Dachshund you may notice little holes all over their yard and this is why it’s in their nature to dig after the moles in the ground. Homesteading Hounds The dog breeds can be broke down into groups or classifications based on their instincts, abilities, and skills. On a basic homestead you’re going to want to look into these categories to find the right pup: Herding Breeds: Herding dogs are also known as work or stock dogs. A natural herding dog has the instinct to herd just about anything. If you’ve ever seen a border collie in the city you might notice it rounding up the little ones, herding them into the house or wherever it is they are supposed to be. Guard Dogs: I’m sure you can guess what the role of a guard dog is! These breeds have a natural instinct to guard and protect their humans and any animals that are a part of the family. Any dog breed is capable of looking after the family or livestock but some or better than others. Ratters or Pest Control: More often than not you’ll find that the better ratters and small pest control breeds are medium to small sized but they carry a huge dog's attitude. Breaking Down The Breeds The Herders Australian Shepherd – The Aussie is medium in size and packed full of energy. This breed loves to work and responds very well to training. The one downside is without training they can get into a lot of mischief. The Australian Shepherd has a special water-resistant fur which requires proper grooming at least once a week. Their high energy requires them to not only require physical exercise daily but mental exercise as well. Welsh Corgi – I know it’s hard to imagine a short little corgi herding cattle but their shape and size actually make them great ankle nippers. They are very intelligent and require very little grooming. The corgi is a very loyal and loving dog that is great for a small farm with a little family. Icelandic Sheepdog – This is a great breed for colder climates. They are medium in size are active but not very active. The Icelandic Sheepdog is very friendly, curious, and playful so busy days are good for them. This breed has two coats of fur, one is long and the other is short. This allows them to shed the longer fur in warmer weather in order to acclimate easily. This means they are a higher maintenance breed who requires constant grooming, especially during the spring shedding. There are many breeds that are great for herding farm animals. The German Shepherd, Australian Cattle Dog, and Border Collies are just a few more you might be familiar with. The Guards German Shepherd –  The German Shepherd is a large dog with a medium to high level of energy. This breed of Shepherd is very confident, easy to train, and eager to please. Because the German Shepherd is so loyal, loving, and smart they are great family dogs. They really are more of a multi-purpose dog because not only will they protect and guard but they will also herd the livestock and hunt the moles. Their long fur means they need to be groomed regularly. Doberman Pinscher -You might think a dobie is more of a junkyard dog but they can make great guard dogs for the livestock, family, and homestead. They have a medium build but are extremely high energy. One of my favorite things about the Doberman is how alert they are. They are fairly easy to train and pretty willing to learn. They are VERY protective and VERY cautious of strangers. Their short hair means they only require minimal grooming but if you live in a colder climate you may want to reconsider your choice. Giant Schnauzer – This large dog is high energy and high maintenance. They are almost as alert as the Doberman and equally protective of the farm and family. The giant schnauzer does best when their day consists of high activity, they love having a job. They also love to swim. All of the dogs listed above can be multi-purpose, but they do better with what they know. The pest control and ratters are generally small breeds that are close to the ground such as, the Rat Terrier and the Miniature Pinscher. I personally feel it’s better to have a multi-purpose dog or two around the farm, but to each their own. Now that we’ve discussed some of the most common homesteading hounds, here’s a list of things to consider during your selection: Qualities, Traits, & Considerations For Homesteading Hounds: Consider the climate in your area in order to provide the right environment for the breed of choice. Consider the prey in your area that your dogs will be guarding the livestock from. If you have bears you can count on having two or more dogs. If you have smaller prey then there’s little less to worry about. Their temperament. Are they aggressive, good with kids, etc. The maintenance they need in order to stay healthy and groomed properly. Consider the health issues of each breed. How active they are or aren’t. Consider how much and what kind of training will be required to get your dog up to par. As I mentioned, having a dog or two on a homestead is a wonderful idea for so many reasons. The list of dog breeds is very long so I picked some of my favorite breeds and included why they make the right breeds for the job. We would love to hear what kind of fur babies you have floating around and how they fare on the farm! Left-wing actress throws former flame Dennis Quaid under the bus over his Trump support: 'Vote blue to stop the stupid'

Left-wing actress Lea Thompson appeared to shame former fiancé Dennis Quaid on X for his support of former President Donald Trump in the lead-up to next month's election.Thompson reacted to a video of Quaid speaking at Trump's Coachella rally Saturday and posted, "I was engaged to him," alongside a thinking emoji and the hashtags "vote blue to stop the stupid" and "crime is actually down" with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in power.'I can see why he likes Trump so much. They both dodged bullets.'According to the Wrap, Thompson and Quaid began dating in 1982 after meeting on the set of “Jaws 3-D," and they were engaged from 1984 until 1987. The Wrap added that "Thompson has gone on to become a prolific TV director, while Quaid recently starred as Ronald Reagan in the poorly reviewed 'Reagan' biopic." The Wrap left out that while film critics — who typically fly left-wing Hollywood political flags — indeed gave "Reagan" an average score of 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, the average audience member score for the biopic is a whopping 98%.Quaid during the rally said that when he voted for Reagan decades ago, he told his roommate in Los Angeles, who retorted to Quaid, "You are kicked out of the hippies," Fox News reported. How did people react to Thompson's takedown of Quaid? As you might guess, given that Thompson likely doesn't have a ton of politically conservative followers on X, it appears a fair number of folks reacted positively to her post. But not all of them were supportive. Former Democrat Natalie Jean Beisner quipped back at Thompson, "I can see why he likes Trump so much. They both dodged bullets." Conservative commentator Sydney Watson told Thompson bluntly, "Nobody gives a s**t, Lea."Others offered similar perspectives:"Whew. That was a close one. Trump 2024," another user said."Yea. Funny how crime stats are down when not reported," another user noted."Glad he got out just in time," another user declared."This isn't the burn you think it is, Lea," another user explained. "Here's a man you presumably once loved, a man whose character you knew better than most, sharing his love for his country, why is that stupid to you? BTW, he's correct. And crime is up."Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

Guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast has three questions for voters who care about America’s health crisis

On a recent episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan met with New York Times bestselling author and founder of TrueMed Payments Calley Means. Means’ mission is to expose the medical industrial complex that profits from keeping people sick and insist that more health care dollars be spent on preventive measures, such as exercise, healthy food, sleep, and stress management. Dave Rubin plays the clip of Means explaining to Rogan why Trump is the only choice for voters who care to avoid a public health crisis of cataclysmic proportions. - YouTube www.youtube.com “I used to be a never-Trumper,” Means told Rogan. But that all changed once Trump made America’s health crisis a defining issue of his campaign and joined forces with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. When it comes to voting in the election, Means says we need to ask ourselves three questions. One: “Who sees this corruption and institutional capture that’s going to destroy our country to an existential level?” Two: “Who is going to go up against the military industrial complex, the health care industrial complex, the education industrial complex?” And three: “Who do we believe is going to appoint people like RFK, people like Elon Musk, to stir stuff up?” “I do consider this the most important election of my lifetime,” Means said, adding that when he looks at Trump now, he sees a “genuine desire” to “prevent nuclear war and dramatically reverse our health crisis.” “Trump has said that his one big mistake last time was personnel ... Pharma and Ag slithered in and gave him the list of names,” he explained. “Everybody should ask: Do you think RFK [Jr] is going to have an influence on those names?” “I think he is, and I think people like Elon are going to be involved. I think there’s this coalition of people who are coming together,” he told Rogan, reiterating that “we will be on the verge of a health population collapse — a society-destabilizing event — unless true executive leadership sees this corruption and this issue for what it is and says we need a radical transformation.” “It also seems like if this isn't done now, [Democrats] will take steps to make sure it can never be done in the future,” Rogan added. “It's not just that they disagree with him; they attack him ... in unison. They do it so coordinated that you realize there is a machine behind this in that they repeat the same talking points. It's like they're given a script, and there's no repercussions for lies. ... No one gets in trouble, and the same people are still disseminating the news,” he explained. However, on a positive note, “More people are aware of that than ever before,” according to Rogan. JD Vance mocks Kamala Harris after she allegedly plagiarized sections of her 2009 book

Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance ridiculed Vice President Kamala Harris (D) over a report that unearthed evidence of plagiarism in her 2009 book. Harris expanded her political prominence with the release of the book she co-authored with Joan Hamilton, entitled "Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor's Plan to Make Us Safer," but investigator Christopher Rufo says sections of the book were lifted from sources without proper attribution. 'Harris and her co-author duplicated long passages nearly verbatim without proper citation and without quotation marks, which is the textbook definition of plagiarism.' Rufo cited media researcher Stefan Weber, known for finding evidence of plagiarism in other cases, in his exposé. Some of the passages he highlighted appear to contain minor transgressions—reproducing small sections of text; insufficient paraphrasing—but others seem to reflect more serious infractions, similar in severity to those found in Harvard president Claudine Gay’s doctoral thesis. Rufo said the Harris campaign did not respond with a request for a comment about the allegations. Taken in total, there is certainly a breach of standards here. Harris and her co-author duplicated long passages nearly verbatim without proper citation and without quotation marks, which is the textbook definition of plagiarism. They not only lifted material from sources without proper attribution, but in at least one case, relied on a low-quality source, which potentially undermined the accuracy of their conclusion. Vance responded on his social media account with a link to the damaging revelations. "Hi, I'm JD Vance. I wrote my own book, unlike Kamala Harris, who copied hers from Wikipedia," he posted. Harris has been accused previously of ripping off a childhood story from civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. and claiming it to be her own. In the story, she claims she fell out of a stroller at a civil rights protest and told her mother that she wanted "fweedom." Critics point out it is remarkably similar to a story MLK Jr. told about a child he saw at a protest. Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, has also been accused of numerous exaggerations and outright lies related to his life story and political background. Vance went on to mock what he expected to be the response from the mainstream media. "Cue the corporate media 'fact checkers,'" he posted. "Vance's tweet is missing important context. Kamala Harris only copied some of her book from Wikipedia."The Harris campaign did not respond to a request for comment from Blaze News. Like Blaze News?
