Uninvited: A Vastly Underrated NES Horror Adventure

Point and click adventure games have a certain undeniable charm about them, granting exceptional immersion despite their occasionally clunky controls and obtuse puzzles. In the sea of retro point and clicks, the “MacVenture” franchise stands out, thanks to its brutal difficulty and macabre tone. Originally developed by ICOM Simulations for the Macintosh and later ported to the NES, this memorable series is unforgiving, morbid, and absolutely aimed at adults. Uninvited (Macintosh, 1986), is somewhat of a black sheep in the series, and is often overlooked next to other MacVenture titles like Déjà Vu (Macintosh, 1985) and Shadowgate (1987). That’s a shame, as Uninvited is an underrated horror adventure that pushed the boundaries of the Nintendo Entertainment System, leaving lasting memories along the way. Into the Haunted Mansion Like many classic horror games, Uninvited is set in an ominous, seemingly haunted mansion, bursting to the seams with paranormal activity. You play as an unnamed character who wakes up after a terrible car crash, and with your younger sister missing from the passenger seat, you hurriedly out for help. Left stranded, you enter a foreboding manor in search of assistance, but wind up much worse for wear. Making the situation even more dire, the house is infested with all manner of spooky inhabitants, including ghosts, tricksters, and plenty of paranormal creatures, all of which are insistent on ending your life. This isn’t Resident Evil (PlayStation, 1996); you won’t be able to kill these creatures with a handgun or grenades. Instead, Uninvited challenges you to use your wits by collecting items, combining them in unusual ways, and solving puzzles to survive the night. A lot of your time will be spent clicking around various rooms, searching for keys or other useful items, hoping that something you find will aid against the inevitable horrors to come. For example, when you encounter a ghost early in the game, most actions will result in your swift death. However, if you explore the house enough to find a can of “No-Ghost”, simply spraying that on the specter will get the job done. It’s not about how precisely you can aim or how quickly you can run, it’s all about finding a unique solution to each encounter. Most of the puzzles in Uninvited are a bit more complex, but you get the idea. Bumps in the Night That said, Uninvited isn’t without its flaws. The interface is a little clunky, some puzzles can result in pixel hunts, and deaths can be frustrating, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it. Every moment you spend searching through this sprawling haunted mansion is full of suspense and mystery, especially as you start uncovering some of its secrets. The NES version also provides vibrant colors and removes some of the bothersome features of the Macintosh original, including a hidden background failure timer, streamlined magic usage, and a few other fixes. Courtesy of The Cover Project If you’ve never played Uninvited, I highly recommend that you track down a copy and check it out. It’s one of the few horror games in the otherwise expansive NES library, and a great entry point into the MacVenture series as a whole. In addition to the old school Mac, Amiga, Atari ST, and NES versions, you can also play Uninvited on modern systems via the 8-Bit Adventure Anthology, available on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles. Man Arrested With Guns Outside Trump Rally Speaks Out: ‘These Accusations Are Complete Bulls***’

The man who was arrested with firearms over the weekend outside a rally for former President Donald Trump in California is speaking out about the arrest after the county’s sheriff said he believes that it was an “assassination attempt.” The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said 49-year-old Vem Miller was stopped Saturday evening in a black SUV and was found “to be illegally in possession of a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine.” Miller, who is a registered Republican, told the media after he was released from jail that he is a Trump supporter and that he was “shocked” by the accusations that he was being viewed as a potential assassin. “These accusations are complete bulls***,” Miller said. “I’m an artist, I’m the last person that would cause any violence and harm to anybody.” Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco addressed Miller’s remarks during a press conference, saying that he did not care what he had to say because it had no bearing on the investigation. Miller was taken into custody without incident and booked at the John J. Benoit Detention Center for possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine. Miller was offered bail and was released after posting the $5,000, the New York Post reported. The Trump campaign, in a statement to The Daily Wire, praised the work of local law enforcement in securing the venue. “We are aware of news reports about the arrest and are currently monitoring the situation and gathering more information,” the campaign said. Bianco said at a press conference Sunday evening that the vehicle had “an obviously fake license plate,” which sparked further investigation. “During that investigation, the deputy eventually found multiple passports with multiple names, multiple driver’s licenses with different names, the vehicle was unregistered and the license plate was what we in law enforcement would recognize as one that is homemade and indicative of a group of individuals that claim to be sovereign citizens,” he continued. “I truly do believe that we prevented another assassination attempt,” he added. Miller reportedly denied in an interview with a reporter that he was a member of any kind of sovereign citizen group. A joint federal law enforcement statement was released Sunday indicating that federal authorities are aware of the incident and are investigating. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office U.S. Secret Service and FBI are aware of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office’s arrest on Saturday,” the statement said. “The U.S. Secret Service assesses that the incident did not impact protective operations and former President Trump was not in any danger.” “While no federal arrest has been made at this time, the investigation is ongoing,” the statement continued. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office, U.S. Secret Service and FBI extend their gratitude to the deputies and local partners who helped ensure the safety of last night’s events.”

Hezbollah Terror Attack Kills 4 IDF Soldiers, Wounds Dozens

A drone attack launched on Sunday against the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) by Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Islamic terrorist group based in southern Lebanon, killed four soldiers and wounded dozens more. The drone hit an IDF base adjacent to Binyamina in central-northern Israel, Israel said in a statement. “All the injured individuals have been evacuated to hospitals and their families have been notified,” the statement said. “Four IDF soldiers were killed in the incident and an additional seven were severely injured.” The four soldiers who were killed were identified as Sergeant Omri Tamari, 19, from Mazkeret Batya; Sergeant Yosef Hieb, 19, from Tuba-Zangariyye; Sergeant Yoav Agmon, 19, from Binyamina-Giv’at Ada; and Sergeant Amitay Alon, 19, from Ramot Naftali. Various publications pinned the number of soldiers injured at 58. The news comes as Israel has conducted ground operations inside Lebanon for the past couple of weeks as it seeks to push Hezbollah away from Israel’s northern border, where tens of thousands of Israeli citizens have been forced to evacuate their homes due to thousands of missiles, rockets, and drones that have been fired by the terrorist group. Israel has, in large part, dismantled the terrorist organization, effectively killing off its leaders and entire senior command; killing and maiming thousands of terrorist operatives in covert pager and walkie-talkie bombings and aerial bombings; and destroying large stockpiles of weapons that have been amassed by the group for years. The other major news out of the region over the weekend came from the U.S., which announced that it was sending an anti-missile system to Israel to protect it from Iranian ballistic missile attacks as it prepares retaliatory strikes against the Islamic regime for a missile attack it launched against Israel at the start of the month. “The THAAD Battery will augment Israel’s integrated air defense system,” the Pentagon said in a statement. “This action underscores the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel, and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran.” The THAAD system uses “hit-to-kill” technology to destroy incoming missiles and is capable of engaging targets well over 100 miles away. In the U.S. arsenal, the THAAD “covers the [U.S. ballistic missile defense] middle tier and defends a larger area than the Patriot Air and Missile Defense System,” according to congressional research documents. “It complements the Patriot, the Navy’s AEGIS Missile Defense System, and the Ground-based Midcourse Defense System.” A THAAD battery typically consists of “95 soldiers, six truck mounted launchers, 48 interceptors (eight per launcher), one Army/Navy Transportable Radar Surveillance and Control Mode 2 (AN/TPY-2) radar, and a Tactical Fire Control/Communications component.” The system, developed by Lockheed Martin Corporation, was designed to shoot down short-range, medium-range, and limited intermediate-range ballistic missile threats inside or outside the atmosphere during their final (terminal) phase of flight.
