Karma: The Dark World Preview

For once, it is literally 1984. Karma: The Dark World gives you a rough awakening in the German Democratic Republic, but the similarities end there.

Windows 11’s new passkey design includes cloud syncing and 1Password integration

Image: Microsoft Microsoft is greatly improving its support of passkeys inside Windows 11 soon. A redesigned Windows Hello experience will allow you to select how you want to save your passkeys and even sync them to your Microsoft account or store them with 1Password, Bitwarden, or other passkey providers. A new API for third-party password and passkey managers means developers can plug directly into the Windows 11 experience, so you can use the same passkey from your mobile device to authenticate on your PC. Right now it’s possible in some apps to do this through QR codes and other ways to authenticate from a mobile device, but Microsoft’s full support means the passkeys experience on Windows is about to get a lot better. GM’s PowerBank home battery is now available

The PowerBank is part of GM’s Home System bundle but can be purchased separately. | Image: GM GM is launching its new PowerBank home battery unit today, which slots right into the company’s lineup of residential energy management products. The battery lets homeowners collect energy at off-peak times from the grid or a solar panel system and then power the home when energy prices peak or when the lights go out without needing to keep an EV hooked up in the garage. GM’s home energy company, GM Energy, launched in 2022 to compete in a growing home energy market with competitors like Tesla and its Powerwall and newcomers like EcoFlow and Anker. Home backup solutions are expensive, but they’ll also keep the freezer, CPAP machine, and water pumps running as increasingly severe weather wreaks havoc on the grid. Currently, over 3 million... Threshold’s Wi-Fi sensing plugs offer caregiver monitoring without cameras

Image: Threshold Threshold Care’s new Motion Wi-Fi Sensing Plugs can help caregivers monitor older adults, like aging parents, in a noninvasive way that maintains the privacy of everyone in the home. Its built-in Wi-Fi sensing technology measures physical interference with Wi-Fi signals to enable real-time monitoring of “movement without capturing images or photos.” Wi-Fi sensing technology has been kicked around for a few years. It was part of a motion-sensing security feature built into Linksys Velop routers a few years ago, and Signify also uses the tech for its Wiz lightbulbs that turn on when you enter a room — and off when you leave. Image: Threshold The Motion plugs are available in a three-pack for $59.99, so you can place... Continue reading…

iPhone 16 Photographic Styles feature makes everyone a good photographer

iPhone 16 Photographic Styles feature makes everyone a good photographer

With the iPhone 16 release, Apple revamped the Photographic Styles feature that was first introduced with the iPhone 13. While this function has been quickly forgotten by users, Cupertino thinks it deserves another try. Photographic Styles can now be previewed before shooting and even edited after capturing a photo, even if you want to remove the Photographic Styles completely. According to Apple, the next-generation Photographic Styles help users express their creativity and customize their photos by locally adjusting color, highlights, and shadows in real time. In practise, I think the feature definitely elevates the photos of anyone who uses it. The company says that styles also have a deeper understanding of skin undertones, so users can personalize how they appear in photos. “Unlike filters, which often use a one-size-fits-all approach by adding a color to an entire scene, adjustments are applied to specific colors of a selected style,” the company states. What I like the most about Photographic Styles with the iPhone 16 is the new control pad and intensity slider, which easily help me adjust tone and color. These tweaks are previewed live and can be reversed at any time. Image source: José Adorno for BGR While I still find the Camera Control feature confusing, having the possibility to adjust a photo’s color and tone later makes me a better photographer. As I don’t have to overthink about a shot, I can make everything look better with a few taps later. Usually, I take a photo, tap to adjust, and then select the Amber Photographic Style. After tweaking a bit with the pad, I think the photo usually looks better. I’ve also seen some people shooting in Star B&W, which is one of the best black-and-white effects I have ever seen in a built-in application. That said, if you have the new iPhone 16, you should definitely explore Photographic Styles with your photos, as it’s a night and day difference between them when you start tweaking your images. Below, you can learn more about hidden camera tweaks available for iPhone users.
