Woman’s Phone Gets Taken At Concert… But It’s Not What You Think!

When a stranger asks to borrow your phone, you’re going to want details. Well, most of the time, anyway. During a recent Twenty One Pilots concert in Cleveland, one young woman doesn’t hesitate to let her phone be taken away. To be fair, it wasn’t exactly a stranger — it was Mark Eshleman, the beloved Creative Director for the band. Still, you’re probably wondering: Why would he want her phone anyway? Turns out, taking fans’ phones is a new, fun bit the band is doing during their latest tour, Clancy. As you may know, it’s becoming increasingly popular for touring artists to find fun ways to interact with fans. Still, we haven’t seen anything quite like this before. Once the fan temporarily gives over their phone, it’s whisked around the stage, giving them the best concert video ever. See for yourself in the video below! @twentyonepilots Ride phone snatch #clancycleveland ♬ original sound – twenty one pilots This fun interactive moment in the shows seems to be fairly new, but it already has a name. Because it takes place during their hit song, Ride, it’s fittingly called “Ride phone snatch.” Twenty One Pilots Finds a Clever Way to Give This Young Fan the Best Concert Video Ever Despite being a seemingly new addition to the show, the young fan may have recognized immediately what was happening. The second Mark asks for her phone, she can’t control her excitement — and who could!? Getting a video like this from one of your favorite bands is oh-so special! “When Mark asks you for your phone, you give Mark your phone. No questions, no debate. Just give the man your phone,” one fan writes in the comments, with another adding, “I will guarantee you anything this girl watches the videos so many times a day… cause I would do the exact same thing.” You can find the source of this story’s featured image here! Step Into One Of The Oldest Libraries In The World… The Astounding Abbey Library

The Abbey Library at St. Gallen makes you wear little bootie covers over your shoes. As one of the oldest libraries in the world, the Stiftsbibliothek (Abbey Library) in Switzerland is an architectural masterpiece. Originally constructed as part of a monastery, the abbey became secular around 1800. It is still a fully functioning library. @michael.the.canadian Welcome to the Abbey Library of St. Gallen, designed by Peter Thumb between 1758 and 1767. It’s one of the oldest libraries in the world, with manuscripts dating back to the 8th century. I had to wear some fun slippers over my shoes whilst filming to protect the delicate floors of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Such a unique way to experience history! ♬ Epilogue – Jóhann Jóhannsson The Abbey Library has around 170,000 books, and patrons can still check items out, but only those published after 1900. Materials with earlier publication dates must remain within the library. To protect the ornate floors, patrons must wear slip-on shoe covers during visits. Admission is free if you have the Swiss Travel Pass. If not, you will have to pay a small entrance fee. Image from Wikimedia Commons. The current facility was under construction from 1758 until 1767. An Austrian architect, Peter Thumb, supervised construction. The Baroque hall includes Rococo decorations, making the Abbey Library one of the most beautiful sites in the country. The original library was open around 612 A.D., making it the third-oldest library in the world and the oldest in Switzerland. In 1983, the Abbey Library gained inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Image from Wikimedia Commons. The library’s collection includes early medieval manuscripts. Over 400 volumes are over 1,000 years old, and many of the older manuscripts are handwritten. The older texts must be handled carefully, and you may have to follow specific rules to handle them. Whether you visit for the books or the architecture, the Abbey Library will not disappoint you. Please respect any rules within the library to ensure the preservation of this incredible collection of books and beautiful architecture. Please share this with people who appreciate libraries and buildings with great bones. You can find the source of this story’s featured image here and here. ‘By Endurance We Conquer’: Who Was Ernest Shackleton?

One of the most famous Antarctic explorers in history, and routinely voted as one of the greatest Britons of all time, Sir Ernest Shackleton is a name which lives on as much as in legend as in history. Remembered as much for his failures as his successes, Shackleton has something of a complex legacy. Despite this, he remains a symbol of the unquenchable thirst for knowledge and indefatigable spirit which characterised the ‘heroic age of Antarctic exploration’, and his sheer will to survive remains remarkable to this day. But behind this semi-mythical figure, there was a very human one. Here is the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton. A restless youth Ernest was born in County Kildare, Ireland, in 1874. The Shackletons, an Anglo-Irish family, had 10 children in total. They moved to Sydenham, south London, in 1884. A voracious reader with a taste for adventure, the young Ernest found school dull and left education as soon as possible. He became an apprentice with the North West Shipping Company, spending the next 4 years at sea. At the end of this period, he passed his examination for second mate and took up a more senior position as third officer. By 1898, he had risen through the ranks to become a master mariner, meaning he could command a British ship anywhere in the world. Contemporaries remarked Shackleton was far from the standard officer: he might not have liked education, but he picked up enough of it to be able to quote poetry at random, and some described him as a more ‘sensitive’ type than his contemporaries. Shackleton’s career in the Merchant Navy was short-lived, however, after he found himself commissioned into the Royal Navy to embark on the Discovery expedition in 1901.   Discovery  The British National Antarctic Expedition, known as the Discovery expedition after its main ship, embarked from London in 1901 after years of planning. It was hoped the expedition would make significant geographical and scientific discoveries in Antarctica. Led by Captain Robert Scott, the expedition lasted 3 years. Shackleton proved himself to be an asset to the crew and well-liked and respected by his fellow officers, including Scott himself. Scott, Shackleton and Wilson, another officer, marched southwards, hoping to achieve a record latitude, which they achieved, albeit with the consequences of scurvy, frostbite and snow blindness. Shackleton suffered in particular and was ultimately sent home in January 1903 on the relief ship on account of his health. However, some historians have speculated that Scott felt threatened by Shackleton’s popularity, and wanted to remove him from the expedition as a result. There is scarce evidence to support this theory, however. A pre-1909 photograph of Ernest Shackleton.Image Credit: National Library of Norway / Public Domain. Antarctic aspirations On his return from the Discovery expedition, Shackleton was in demand: his knowledge and first-hand experience of the Antarctic made him valuable to a variety of organisations who had interests in Antarctic exploration. After an unsuccessful stint as a journalist, attempting to stand as an MP and a failed investment in a speculative shipping company, it became clear that the only thing really on Shackleton’s mind was returning to the Antarctic. In 1907, Shackleton presented plans for an Antarctic expedition, which aimed to reach both the magnetic and geographical South Pole, to the Royal Geographical Society, before beginning the arduous process of finding donors and backers to fund the trip. The final amount was raised just 2 weeks before the Nimrod was due to depart. Nimrod  Nimrod departed in January 1908 from New Zealand: despite inclement weather and several early setbacks, the expedition established a base in McMurdo Sound. In doing so, Shackleton broke a promise he had made to Scott that he would not interfere in ‘his’ area of the Antarctic. The expedition achieved some notable successes, including reaching a new furthest south latitude, the discovery of the Beardmore Glacier, the first successful ascent of Mount Erebus and the discovery of the location of the Magnetic South Pole. Shackleton returned to England a hero, with the admiration of his men, but still deeply in debt. Whilst Shackleton continued to tell those at home that his place was “at home now”, this was not quite true. The Antarctic still captivated him. Even after Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole, Shackleton decided there were still more achievements he could aim for, including completing the first continental crossing. Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition  Perhaps Shackleton’s most famous, and most disastrous expedition, was the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (often nicknamed Endurance, after the name of the ship), which departed in 1914. Financed almost entirely by private donations, the aim of the expedition was to cross Antarctica for the first time. Trading somewhat on his name and the glamour and rewards Antarctic success provided, he received over 5,000 applications to join his crew: after years in the inhospitable conditions of expeditions, Shackleton was well aware temperament, character and the ability to get on with people were vital attributes – often more so than technical or practical skills. He chose his crew personally. A photograph by Frank Hurley of one of the dog sledding expeditions from Endurance.Image Credit: Public Domain Endurance became trapped in the ice, and sank after 10 months, in November 1915. Shackleton and his men camped on the ice for several more months before sailing in a small lifeboat to Elephant Island. Known for his dedication to his men, Shackleton gave his mittens to Frank Hurley, one of his crew, on the journey, getting frostbitten fingers as a result. He subsequently led a smaller party to South Georgia Island: after landing on the wrong side of the island to the whaling station, the men traversed the mountainous interior, eventually reaching the Stromness whaling station 36 hours later, in May 1916, before returning for his men. The expedition has gone down in history as one of the most remarkable feats of human endurance, courage and sheer luck. Endurance remained lost to the depths of the Weddell Sea for 107 years, until it was discovered during the Endurance22 expedition in a “remarkable state of preservation”. Death and legacy When the Endurance expedition returned to England in 1917, the country was caught up in World War One: Shackleton himself tried to enlist and was given diplomatic posts, achieving little success. In 1920, tired of civilian life and with the Antarctic still beckoning, he embarked on his final expedition, aiming to circumnavigate the continent and engage in further exploration. Before the expedition could begin in earnest, however, Shackleton suffered a heart attack and died on the island of South Georgia: he had begun to drink heavily and it’s thought this hastened his demise. He was buried on South Georgia, in accordance with his wife’s wishes. Shackleton died with some £40,000 of debt to his name: a biography was published within a year of his death as both a tribute and as a way of helping his family financially. As time went on, Shackleton faded somewhat into obscurity against the memory and legacy of Scott’s Antarctic expeditions. However, this reversed in the 1970s, as historians became increasingly critical of Scott and celebratory of Shackleton’s achievements. By 2022, Shackleton was ranked 11th in a BBC poll of ‘Greatest Britons’, cementing his hero status. Read more about the discovery of Endurance. The Hunt for Aliens and the Question of Who Created the Universe

The Hunt for Aliens and the Question of Who Created the Universe

After reading the depressing geopolitical news this morning, I wondered whether we could benefit from advice provided by a superhuman intelligence in our cosmic neighborhood. Suppose we chose to be proactive and seek the best imaginable advisor by advertising the job of God and hoping for candidates, what would this job description entail? Surely, we would require any viable candidate to know how to create a Universe. Our scientists do not know what happened before the Big Bang because Albert Einstein’s theory of gravity breaks down at that singular moment. However, if we have had a theory that unifies quantum mechanics and gravity, we could have figured out the conditions that gave birth to our Universe. Having that recipe would have enabled us the know-how for potentially creating these conditions in the laboratory. There are hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky-Way galaxy alone, and most of them formed billions of years before the Sun. This gives ample time to quantum-gravity engineers of an advanced extraterrestrial civilization to create baby universes in their laboratories and be qualified to apply to our job description of God. It would greatly benefit us to find them, even if imitating their technological insights would feel like cheating in an intelligence test. Could we find our interstellar partners with our modern telescopes? Extraordinary evidence requires extraordinary funding. If we had invested ten billion dollars in the search, similar to the budget allocated to the Large Hadron Collider or the Webb Telescope, we might have found our cosmic partners by now and the cosmos might not have been as lonely and dark as it appears to us now. Over the past seventy years, we searched for radio signals from other intelligent civilizations. But this is like waiting for a phone call. Nobody may be calling us while we are waiting. A better approach is to search for packages that may have arrived at our mailbox. The senders may be dead, but any trash they left behind in the ocean of interstellar space, could be our treasure. Finding Interstellar Artifacts Interstellar is the space that lies beyond the solar system. Traditionally, we used telescopes to observe remotely what lies near other stars. But remote observing is limited to extremely bright objects. If we ever discover an interstellar car, similar to the dummy payload launched in 2018 by SpaceX, we will know that Elon Musk is not the most accomplished space entrepreneur since the Big Bang. Over the past decade, astronomers discovered the first few interstellar objects. As described in my book “Extraterrestrial,” the football-size object `Oumuamua was discovered by the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii on October 19, 2017. The brightness of sunlight reflected off `Oumuamua changed by a factor of ten as it tumbled every eight hours. These extreme brightness variations implied that `Oumuamua was shaped like a pancake. This mysterious object accelerated away from the Sun without signs of cometary evaporation, and receded from Earth faster than any human-made rocket. A similar push by reflection of sunlight was detected for another object, 2020 SO, which was verified to be a rocket booster from a 1966 launch by NASA. Variation in brightness of `Oumuamua as observed by various telescopes during three days in October 2017. Different colored dots represent measurements through different filters in the visible and near-infrared bands of the color spectrum. The amount of reflected sunlight changed periodically by about a factor of ten (2.5 magnitudes) as `Oumuamua rotated every 8 hours. This implied that it has an extreme shape which is at least ten times longer than it is wide when projected on the sky. (Credit: ESO/K. Meech et al.) An Interstellar Meteor: Technological Artifact or a Rock? As described in my latest book “Interstellar”, the first interstellar object to be detected was an interstellar meteor named IM1, half a meter in size, that collided with Earth on January 8, 2014. Outside the Solar system, IM1 was moving at 60 kilometers per second, faster than 95% of all stars near the Sun. Despite its high speed, it disintegrated in the lower atmosphere, where the air is dense. This implied that it was tougher than all meteors documented by NASA over the past decade in its CNEOS catalog of meteor fireballs. It took my research team a full year to plan an expedition to the fireball site of IM1 in the Pacific Ocean. The location was determined by satellites of the U.S. Department of Defense, which detected the light from IM1’s brilliant fireball. Collecting molten meteoritic droplets (spherules) from the ocean floor was particularly challenging because the ocean is a mile deep at that location and the search region is 7 miles in size. Our team anchored a sled full of magnets to a ship called “Silver Star” and dragged it on the ocean floor across the survey region. We visited IM1’s impact site on June 14–28, 2023 and collected 850 tiny droplets, less than a millimeter each. For some of the retrieved spherules retrieved from IM1’s fireball site in the Pacific Ocean, the abundances of various elements from the periodic table, such as Beryllium, Lanthanum or Uranium, are up to a thousand times higher than in material that made the Solar system. It took us a year to analyze the recovered droplets. By now, we published our findings in a detailed peer-reviewed paper. Our analysis used state-of-the-art laboratory instruments (including a micro-X-Ray Fluorescence analyzer, Electron Probe Microanalyzer and an Inductive-Coupled-Plasma Mass-spectrometer). We found that about a tenth of the total population of droplets had a chemical composition that was never reported before in the scientific literature. It is characterized by an enhanced abundance of some chemical elements, such as beryllium (Be), lanthanum (La) and uranium (U), up to a thousand times more than the materials that made the Solar system. We labeled this special set: “BeLaU”-type spherules. The BeLaU composition is unfamiliar and different from the composition of the crust of the Earth, Mars, the Moon, asteroids and comets and potentially flags an origin from outside the solar system. Its origin is unknown. But curiosity-driven science never ends. Our analysis raises new questions: What is the age and material properties of IM1? Is IM1 natural or artificial in origin? Where did it come from and how long was its journey? Science is better than Politics We are currently planning our next expedition for summer 2025, with the goal of answering these questions. Aside from identifying the nature of IM1, finding large pieces from its wreckage would allow us to determine the age of IM1 from its radioactive isotopes, to find the composition of volatile elements that were lost from the spherules we retrieved, and also to gauge IM1’s material strength and thermal properties, potentially explaining why it maintained its integrity despite witnessing atmospheric stress beyond the tolerance of the toughest iron meteorites known in the Solar system. To find larger pieces of IM1, we intend to use a robot named Hercules, accompanied by a video feed that would allow us to see what we are picking up. Our imagination is limited by our past experience, but nature can surprise us. Finding clues for a partner from another star can be more inspiring than following our politicians. Strange-Shaped UAP Filmed Over Taiwan

A strange and unusual UFO sighting over a city in Taiwan has unfolded last Friday morning in Hualien, where a motorist, stuck in traffic, spotted the mysterious craft hovering in the sky, reports coasttocoastam.com. Described as having a golden metallic sheen and an almost rounded cube shape, the unidentified object stood out in the morning sky. The video was soon shared on social media, where it quickly went viral across Taiwan. Speculation around the sighting has surged, with some observers drawing comparisons between this UFO and similar unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) previously recorded by U.S. military drones in the Middle East. These parallels have led to theories that the object could be a sophisticated drone or even a top-secret craft. However, skeptics argue it may simply be a misidentified balloon caught in the wind. With no official explanation forthcoming, the true nature of the Hualien UFO remains a mystery, leaving the public to draw their own conclusions. Bin Laden's son kicked out of France
Published October 10, 2024 at 10:24 am
Foreign. Omar bin Laden, the son of late al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, has been deported from France after posting social media posts that French authorities say constitute "defense of terrorism".

Omar, 43, has lived in Normandy for several years and worked as an artist there.

The post that led to the expulsion was published on the anniversary of Osama bin Laden's death in May 2023. The post described his father as a martyr who "built nations and created glory" and paid tribute to those who "wrote history with their blood".

This led to Omar bin Laden being accused of glorifying terrorism, which subsequently resulted in his deportation.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau confirmed the decision at X, stressing that Omar bin Laden is now permanently banned from returning to France, for whatever reason.

Omar has previously distanced himself from his father's acts of violence and expressed disappointment that his father was killed without trial.

Apple TV Plus is coming to Prime Video

It’s no cheaper than subscribing to Apple directly, but it potentially gives Apple TV Plus a wider audience. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Amazon is adding Apple TV Plus to Prime Video, a move that could help bolster the iPhone maker’s languishing streaming service. Apple TV Plus will be available on Prime Video in the US later this month as a $9.99 monthly add-on — the same you’d otherwise pay directly to Apple. The difference now is that Apple TV Plus is being promoted directly to Amazon’s massive video subscriber base. “What we offer channel partners is hundreds of millions of subscribers around the world,” said Prime Video head Mike Hopkins at Bloomberg’s Screentime conference. “We see a lot more engagement, we’re able to get subscribers for those businesses at a really attractive rate.” Amazon takes a cut of the revenue from streaming subscriptions purchased on its...
