Today, I want to share vital steps you can take to protect yourself and your home. A layered approach to security is essential for a safer, more prepared household. Here’s how you can make sure your home is ready for anything that may come your way: 1. Perimeter Security – The First Line of Defense Install Exterior Lighting: Motion-activated lights around the exterior of your home deter intruders. Opt for solar-powered or hardwired models to cover all sides of the house. Security Cameras: Invest in cameras with night vision capabilities that connect to your phone, allowing you to monitor your property 24/7. Signage: Place signs around your property, such as "24-Hour Surveillance" or "Protected by Security System." These signs can make intruders think twice before entering. Fencing and Landscaping: If feasible, use tall fences and thorny bushes to make access to your windows and doors more challenging. Keep bushes trimmed back so there are no places for people to hide. 2. Door & Window Reinforcement – Protect the Entry Points Solid Core Doors & Reinforced Frames: Use solid wood or steel doors for all main entrances, and reinforce frames with longer screws and strike plates. Quality Locks: Deadbolts with a 1-inch throw or more provide added security. For sliding doors, use a rod or bar to prevent forced entry. Window Locks & Film: Install locks on all windows, and consider security film to prevent shattering. Additionally, glass break sensors can alert you to any attempts to breach windows. 3. Interior Deterrents – Prepare for Intruders Inside the Home Alarms & Sensors: Use an alarm system that notifies you and local authorities immediately upon detection. Place sensors on doors and windows, and consider setting up zones for specific parts of the house. Room-by-Room Preparedness: Think through scenarios in high-use areas like bathrooms, bedrooms, and living spaces. Where possible, store self-defense tools in accessible but concealed locations. Safe Rooms: Designate a secure room in your home with reinforced doors, an external phone line, and essential supplies. In case of emergency, you can retreat to this area and call for help. 4. Personal Safety Gear – Be Prepared for Every Situation Keep Self-Defense Items Handy: For many, this may mean having pepper spray, a baton, or a legally owned firearm in accessible locations around the home. Protective Gear: For situations where you need to be outside or confront a threat, consider protective equipment like body armor, ballistic helmets, and gloves. These items are especially valuable for those living in areas with high crime rates. Communications: Maintain a digital or analog radio (like those from Radio Made Easy) so you can stay in touch with neighbors and authorities, even if cell service is disrupted. 5. Emergency Kits & Resources – Think Beyond the Basics First Aid & Trauma Kits: Keep a well-stocked medical kit in your home and car, along with trauma kits for more severe injuries. Flashlights & Headlamps: High-quality flashlights are essential for power outages or nighttime incidents. Equip each family member with a light source, such as SureFire flashlights. Evacuation Plans & Drills: Regularly review evacuation routes with your family. Practicing these drills will make them second nature if you need to leave your home quickly. 7-Day Giveaway!
