Ruston Kelly Puts A “Dirt Emo” Spin On Morgan Wallen Hit, “Sand In My Boots”
"Sand In My Boots," but make it emo.
I'm here for it...
Today, Ruston Kelly released a cover of Morgan Wallen's hit song "Sand In My Boots," which was of course featured on Morgan's record breaking 2021 Dangerous: The Double Album. The song was written by Ashley Gorley, Hardy and Josh Osborne, and shot to the top of the country charts not long after it was released.
It became Morgan's 5th career #1 at country radio, and 7th overall at the time, and is still one of my favorites from the double album.
If Ruston's name sounds familiar and you don't really know his music (you should, by the way), it's probably because he was married to country superstar Kacey Musgraves from 2017 to 2020. He's put out three studio albums since signing with signed with Rounder Records in 2018, including Dying Star (2018), Shape & Destroy (2020) and The Weakness (2023).
Kelly definitely has a unique sound, too, which he describes as "Dirt Emo":
"It was originally a tweet. I mean, this is what Dirt Emo is... basically, confessional songwriting, confessional lyrics, emotional vulnerability to the max, with Americana or folk instrumentation on the periphery. Pretty simple. Or it's just a tweet that I did."
He added:
"I didn’t write this song but I think it’s very sick and I like that the verse starts on the 3 chord... this song is sick so I covered it."

I honestly was surprised to see him record a Morgan Wallen song, because it just doesn't seem like the type of music he typically gravitates towards, but that element of it being so different is also what makes it so intriguing.
It obviously has a much different, more atmospheric and laid back production than Morgan's original, and sounds completely different, but I'm really into it.
The "Dirt Emo" element definitely comes through in the vocals and delivery, and if you were into music like that of blink-182, Dashboard Confessional and others back in the day and love country music now, I think you'll really enjoy this:

A Modern-Day “Anything But Mine"
The first time I ever listened to the Morgan Wallen song, “Sand in My Boots,” I couldn’t help but think that it reminded me a lot of a favorite song of mine from back in the day.
Turns out I wasn’t alone...
A number of fans took to social media comparing “Sand in My Boots” to Kenny Chesney’s 2005 hit, “Anything But Mine.”

The similarities between the two songs are pretty undeniable.
Both tell the story of finding a summer fling at the beach, and then driving home to Tennessee (yes, the Cleveland in “Anything But Mine” is the one in east Tennessee, not Ohio) wondering what could have been. Of course, "Anything But Mine" is arguably the best song of Kenny's career, even Eric Church thinks so.
Let’s look at the lyrics to the chorus of both songs. First we have “Anything But Mine” -
And in the morning I'm leaving
Making my way back to Cleveland
So tonight I hope that I will do just fine
And I don't see how you could ever be
Anything but mine
Then we have “Sand in My Boots.”
Yeah but, now I'm dodging potholes in my sunburnt Silverado
Like a heart-broke Desperado, headin' right back to my roots
Somethin' 'bout the way she kissed me tells me she'd love Eastern Tennessee
Yeah, but all I brought back with me was some sand in my boots
And even listening to the melodies, they have some similarities. So whether he meant to or not, Morgan Wallen may have just given us an updated version of the Kenny Chesney CLASSIC, “Anything But Mine.”
