DeSantis Sends Troops To Keep Ports Open Amid Strike As South Reels From Hurricane

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis authorized state troops to go to ports throughout the state that are being impacted by dock worker strikes so that they can stay open and functioning as the southern part of the country reels from a deadly hurricane that has killed hundreds. DeSantis, who made the remarks during a press conference early on Thursday, said that the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard were being deployed to “critical ports affected to maintain order and, if possible, resume operations which would otherwise be shut down during this interruption.” The announcement comes after Hurricane Helene ripped through several southern states late last week, leading to severe flooding that has devastated numerous communities and killed at least 200 people. “And I would say that this is something that would have significant impacts on the nation’s economy anyways, but to have this happen in a way that could negatively impact people that are reeling from a Category 4 Hurricane, that is just simply unacceptable,” DeSantis said. “So it really is incumbent upon the Biden-Harris administration to do everything in their power to ensure that these goods are where we need to be, that people are not left hanging out in the cold waiting for these goods if they’re sitting in the ocean somewhere and they’re not being able to be used here in the state of Florida or in Georgia or in North Carolina, or where people are going to desperately need this.” Am I Racist? Is In Theaters NOW — Get Your Tickets Here! He said that Biden-Harris had a “responsibility to stand up for the storm victims, stand up for the people who have had their homes damaged or who have lost their homes, and make sure they have what they need to get back on their feet.” The governor also announced the following measures to help the flow of goods from ports to consumers: “The Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard will be deployed to ports affected by the strike to maintain order and, where possible, resume operations at ports which are otherwise shut down.” “The Florida Department of Transportation will waive the collection of tolls and fees as well as size and weight restrictions for commercial vehicles, which will help expedite the transportation of goods from our ports while offsetting operational costs.” “The Florida Highway Patrol will manage the flow of traffic from all Florida seaports as needed to further expedite the flow of goods held up by the strike. FHP will provide law enforcement escorts for commercial motor vehicles upon request.” “Unlike the federal government, Florida is taking decisive action to ensure that our economy continues to function and that victims of Hurricane Helene will have access to what they need to rebuild,” he added in a statement. WATCH: At my direction, the Florida National Guard and the Florida State Guard will be deployed to critical ports affected by the strike to maintain order and, where possible, resume operations. It is unacceptable for the Biden-Harris administration to allow supply chain interruptions… pic.twitter.com/KfzVbBgI10 — Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) October 3, 2024

IT CAN HAPPEN HERE: Free Speech Under Siege in Colorado as Well as in Brazil

The legendary rocker Joe Walsh once sang, “The Rocky Mountain way is better than the way we had.” But in Colorado, unfortunately, the Rocky Mountain way now more closely resembles censorship in Brazil than liberty in America.More than 100 international free speech advocates, including five former U.S. attorneys general, joined an open letter to the Brazilian Congress last month condemning Brazil’s severe censorship, which includes suspension of the social media platform X. While some may look on with mawkish curiosity at foreign intrigue they deem irrelevant to life in America, others may view Brazil’s authoritarian impulse through a lens of gratitude that it couldn’t happen here. Both are wrong. One need only look to the state of Colorado to find an American example of governing authorities who seek to silence speech with which they disagree and compel reiteration of their preferred message. More on that a bit later. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who owns X, has been engaged in a dispute with Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes that stems from de Moraes’ demands that Musk’s social media platform censor messages he disfavors. On Aug. 30, de Moraes officially suspended X nationwide in Brazil. He also froze the bank accounts of Starlink, a subsidiary of Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX that provides internet access via satellite. In his order, de Moraes said X presents a “real danger” of “negatively influencing the electorate in 2024, with massive misinformation, with the aim of unbalancing the electoral result, based on hate campaigns in the digital age, to favor extremist populist groups.” Besides the former attorneys general, signers of the Sept. 12 letter to Brazilian lawmakers include three members of the United Kingdom’s House of Lords, The Daily Wire’s Megan Basham, bestselling author Rod Dreher, podcaster Tammy Peterson, Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon, X “Spaces” host Mario Nawfal, former Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and leading academics such as Princeton University’s Robert P. George. Sifting through de Moraes’ parade of red herrings reveals that he and others in power in Brazil fear that allowing access to certain speech on X might lead to an electoral result they wouldn’t like.As international pressure builds against Brazil’s scurrilous attacks on Musk, X, and the fundamental human right to free speech, many Americans are awakening to the rising global tide of censorship at home. Now, back to Colorado, where current state law invades the sanctity of the counselor-patient relationship. For patients who desire to live according to their true identity as image-bearers of God, created biologically male or female, the state has declared that any message other than so-called gender-affirming care will put a mental health care professional’s license at risk.Colorado’s “pro-choice” legislators, who frequently pontificate that the issue of abortion should be left to women and their doctors, also banned doctors from offering women progesterone to counter the effects of the abortion pill. Thankfully, legal challenges to this Colorado law are underway, but the chilling message from the Legislature is clear: The only state-approved choice once an abortion pill is taken is the one that results in the death of an unborn child. And that’s the only choice about which women can be trusted with information.Government as gatekeeper to information in Colorado isn’t limited to the state. Local school officials decided that parents didn’t need to know their daughter would be required to share a room on an overnight field trip with a male who identified as female. Apparently, the parents couldn’t be trusted to make the “right” decision for their child. Much better to leave it to the “experts,” of course.Colorado is also home to Lorie Smith and Jack Phillips. Smith, who witnessed the now decadelong persecution of Phillips, a Christian baker and self-described cake artist, at the hands of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Smith took that body to the U.S. Supreme Court, where she won the most significant victory for free speech in many years. Smith, a graphic artist, won for herself and other artists across the nation the Supreme Court’s recognition that coerced speech and censorship are two sides of the same unconstitutional coin. Phillips now waits to see if the Colorado Supreme Court will affirm this same principle for him.At the heart of the matter in Brazil and Colorado is the widening gulf between the governing and the governed. It is a tempestuous sea of mistrust. Government officials assume the role of arbiters of truth and the authority to decide what information the masses should have at their disposal. It is a story that has played out on the world stage many times and one that rarely has ended well for the common man or freedom.America, owing to its extraordinary constitutional protections for the God-given rights of the individual, has been an exception to the general rule of history for nearly two and half centuries. As Walsh would put it, “Life’s been good.” To remain so requires vigilance in defense of liberty at home as exemplary leadership for the world. We publish a variety of perspectives. How Arizona’s 218,000 Voters Who Can’t Prove Citizenship Could Affect Election

How Arizona’s 218,000 Voters Who Can’t Prove Citizenship Could Affect Election

Arizona admitted a massive error in its voter rolls, but the state’s top election official still hasn’t shared with localities  the list of 218,000 registered voters who lack proof of U.S. citizenship. The number of voters who can’t prove citizenship amounts to 5% of Arizona’s registered voters, but will affect who may vote in state and local elections that include referendums on abortion and illegal immigration.  Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, a Democrat, said Monday that the number of misclassified voters—initially thought to be 98,000—is more than twice as many: 218,000. A spokesperson for the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office, which oversees elections in the state’s most populous county, said local governments are still waiting for the names of those voters and how many registered in their county.  “Those numbers would come from the secretary of state’s office,” Taylor Kinnerup told The Daily Signal in an email. “Maricopa County, along with all other counties, are awaiting further direction and clarification from the SOS [secretary of state] on this topic.” Arizona is a hotly contested battleground state in this year’s presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, which culminates Nov. 5.  In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden beat Trump, the Republican incumbent, by about 10,400 votes or 0.3% in Arizona. Trump carried the state in 2016 against Democrat Hillary Clinton by about 3%. As secretary of state, Fontes should provide more information to local election officials and the public, said Merissa Hamilton, founder and chairwoman of the Strong Communities Foundation of Arizona, a watchdog group. “Since the secretary won’t give the list of impacted voters or the databases to the [election] recorders, we cannot know how many more noncitizens could access a ballot,” Hamilton told The Daily Signal.  Hamilton has worked for Kari Lake, a Republican candidate in Arizona’s Senate race who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2022.  “Secretary Fontes should immediately release the complete list of the 218,000 voters to the county recorders and give them access to the databases needed to properly maintain their voter rolls,” Hamilton later added. “The county recorders should make cleaning noncitizens off the voter rolls the top priority to ensure voter confidence in the election.” The Daily Signal previously reported that Arizona has 611,717 noncitizens of voting age, although it’s not known how many of them are registered. A peer-reviewed 2014 study by professors at Old Dominion University and George Mason University estimated that 6.4% of noncitizens voted in the 2008 national presidential election. The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Sept. 20 that the initially known 98,000 voters who lack proof of U.S. citizenship would remain on the rolls since they weren’t at fault. The secretary of state’s office said the high court’s ruling should apply to the additional 120,000 registered voters who can’t prove citizenship.  It’s not clear how many of the 218,000 total are noncitizens. But the system error in the state’s Motor Vehicle Division likely doesn’t affect who would vote in the presidential or congressional races. That’s because Arizona may require proof of citizenship only to vote in state and local elections.  Under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, a state can’t impose requirements for federal elections. However, the 218,000 number prompts concerns because federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting or registering to vote.  The Arizona Department of Transportation, which oversees the Motor Vehicle Division, told The Associated Press that it created the coding system.  Voters who lack proof of citizenship may sign an oath that they are U.S. citizens under penalty of perjury, allowing them to vote in federal elections.  Hamilton, of Strong Communities Foundation of Arizona, said local election officials should run the names against databases in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements; the Social Security Administration; and the National Association for Public Health Statistics and Information Systems. “It’s clear that even a small percentage of these 218,000 voters being noncitizens could sway the outcome of elections in Arizona,” Hamilton said. “This underscores the urgent need for action to address the issue of noncitizen voters and ensure the integrity of our democratic process.”  Hamilton said a comprehensive solution is needed to ensure no more mistakes by the Arizona Motor Vehicles Division, which signed up the voters.  “Public records acquired by our organization confirm that the Maricopa County recorder has on record a jury duty questionnaire that states the voter is a citizen of France,” Hamilton said. “Yet, he can access a full ballot after the Motor Vehicle Division generated a voter registration application in 2023 and Maricopa County processed it without seemingly further review.” She added: Another voter we submitted a public records request on is registered to vote at a house he doesn’t live at per the current and previous homeowners and was issued a Federal Only voter registration status this year without what looks like having any additional research done in the federal databases to confirm his identity. Arizona enacted its proof-of-citizenship law in 1996; the law went into effect in 2004. Driver’s licenses issued after 1996 are considered legitimate forms of citizenship verification to vote in federal, state, and local elections. However, a network system error marked a large batch of voters with pre-1996 driver’s licenses. This is where most of the 218,000 were flagged.  The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office didn’t respond before publication to The Daily Signal’s question about whether it shared information with local election officials.  The office’s press release says: “Election officials will contact the affected Arizonans with information regarding their status after the conclusion of this general election if necessary.”  The release doesn’t specify which election officials, state or local.  Election officials in Pima County, Arizona’s second-most-populous county, also didn’t respond by publication time.  The press release from Fontes’ office says the 216,000 it discovered includes about 79,000 Republicans, 61,000 Democrats, and 76,000 who registered with another party.  “The reality is these registrants have met the same legal standard as every other American who registers to vote: swearing under penalty of perjury that they are U.S. citizens,” Fontes said in a public statement. “We can’t risk denying actual citizens the right to vote due to an error out of their control. This issue is another example of why we need to fund elections, update systems and staff, and carry forward our proven tradition of safe, fair and secure elections.” Gina Swoboda, chair of the Arizona Republican Party, said Fontes “repeatedly demonstrated a complete inability to execute the core functions of his position” and called for him to “deliver the list of impacted voters to all 15 county recorders.” “The voters of Arizona have a total loss of confidence in Secretary Fontes,” Swoboda said in a written statement. “The AZGOP will continue to work toward transparency in all of our elections process.”  The post How Arizona’s 218,000 Voters Who Can’t Prove Citizenship Could Affect Election appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Meet the four titans spearheading the 'cis rights movement' that just might 'save America'

Some of the biggest names in the sports industry are leading a movement to protect female athletes against men competing in women’s sports, and yet the story is getting a shocking lack of coverage. While he’s appalled that this revolution isn’t making headlines, Jason Whitlock is thrilled that the movement is gaining momentum anyway. “[Riley Gaines] is the leader of the cis rights movement. She is the Rosa Parks, the first woman to take a major stand,” he says. As for Caitlin Clark, Jason says, she “isn’t outspoken” but is nonetheless “unintentionally being a leader.” “Caitlin Clark has stood her ground, taken the blow, the arrows, the smearing of her and her fan base” in a league that is “hostile ... to cisgender women.” “She's dealt with all the racist comments from Sheryl Swoopes ... she hasn’t bowed to A’ja Wilson and all the people that [say], ‘Admit your white privilege,”’ says Jason, adding, “I don't know where Caitlin Clark stands ... but I know what she represents.” “Caitlin Clark is the Jackie Robinson of the cis rights movement,” he says. - YouTube www.youtube.com According to Jason, the other two women spearheading the movement are Sage Steele and Samantha Ponder. “Sage Steele and Samantha Ponder [are] two titans of the media, two heavyweights at ESPN. They sacrificed their jobs and their careers to stand up for women,” Jason praises, adding that these two women were let go “because they wouldn't bow to the LGBTQIA+ transgender insanity.” “Sage Steele, Samantha Ponder — they're John Carlos and Tommie Smith,” he adds, referencing two Olympic athletes who competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics and used their platforms to stand against racism. While the cis rights movement is geared toward preventing biological men from competing in women’s athletic divisions, Jason says, “It is so much bigger than sports.” “I do think that this is the movement that could save America,” he says.
