Scallion Pancakes

These flaky, crispy, and tender Scallion Pancakes are also known as Green Onion Cakes. Regardless of what you call them, these Chinese dim sum appetizers are wildly popular for good reason.  Sinking your teeth into these crispy, tender Scallion Pancakes is total bliss! In This Article Video: Watch Us Make This RecipeWhy This Recipe Stands OutKey Recipe IngredientsStep-By-Step Recipe InstructionsHow To Prep AheadWhat To Serve With Scallion PancakesCommonly Asked QuestionsScallion Pancakes RecipeMore To Cook And Eat View more This post may contain affiliate links, at no additional cost to you. Video: Watch Us Make This Recipe Why This Recipe Stands Out Chinese Scallion Pancakes bring me back to my childhood, as they were always a favorite in my home. There’s nothing else quite like these dim sum favorites – always mouthwatering, satisfying, and completely addictive. Here’s what you’ll love: 5 Simple Ingredients: Scallion Pancakes take just 5 simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. Flaky, Tender Layers: We share our best tips and tricks on rolling out and cooking these savory pancakes to achieve crisp, flaky, tender layers. Can Be Made in Advance: Scallion Pancake dough freezes super well, making it a great option for an easy meal prep appetizer. The Perfect Appetizer: These pancakes make the perfect appetizer for any meal. They’re especially delicious served with our favorite Asian dishes! Key Recipe Ingredients All-Purpose Flour – No need for anything special. All-Purpose flour creates the perfect consistency for Scallion Pancakes. Boiling Water – Starting the dough with boiling water prevents the gluten from forming strongly, which makes the dough both easy to work with and perfectly tender and chewy. Cold Water – We add cold water after mixing in the boiling water to help the dough form into a ball. Salted Butter – Softened salted butter is rolled into the dough for extra flaky, buttery layers. It’s an unexpected secret ingredient! Scallions – Scallions, or green onions are what provides the wonderfully aromatic flavor of these dim sum scallion cakes; be generous here. Step-By-Step Recipe Instructions In a large bowl, add boiling water to flour and mix. Let cool a few minutes. Add cold water and knead dough until smooth and not sticky. Cover with cling wrap and let rest at room temp for 1 hour. Transfer dough to a floured working surface and divide into 6 even pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a 10-inch round. Spread butter on top of each round and sprinkle evenly with salt and green onions. Roll each dough round up tightly over the butter and scallions. Then take one end and roll it up to the other side into a wheel. Secure ends tightly pinched. Let rest. Roll buns into 1/4 inch thick pancakes. Gently place one cake into heated oil in pan over medium-low heat, and fry until crispy and browned. Flip and repeat. Repeat with remaining pancakes. Slice into wedges and enjoy! For full list of ingredients and instructions, see recipe card below. How To Prep Ahead While these Scallion Pancakes are best enjoyed right away after frying, the dough stores really well. Here’s how we make these in advance: Chill Dough Ball Overnight: Once you have kneaded your dough and are ready to let it rest for an hour, feel free to wrap it airtight and place it in the fridge overnight. Let it come to room temp the next day and continue as normal. Freeze Prepared Pancakes: To freeze the dough, just roll it out as instructed, and stack with 2 layers of floured wax paper or parchment paper in between each uncooked pancake. It’s important to use double layers of wax paper, as we’ve found 1 layer of paper to be too thin. Store in airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Refrigerate Prepared Pancakes: To refrigerate prepared pancakes, use the exact same storage method with flour and wax paper and place in the fridge overnight. What To Serve With Scallion Pancakes Noodles Scallion Pancakes make the perfect appetizer to these savory, sweet, and garlicky Easy Dan-Dan Noodles. This recipe for Chicken Lo Mein is better than takeout and almost just as easy. Another ridiculously easy meal-prep dish is this recipe for big-on-flavor Thai Peanut Noodles. We can’t get enough of this Chinese Chicken Salad, especially served along with Scallion Pancakes. Another amazing side (that can easily be converted into a main meal with some protein) is this Asian Pasta Salad with Sesame Ginger Dressing. Commonly Asked Questions What are Chinese scallion pancakes made out of? There are only 5 simple ingredients in our scallion pancakes: flour, onions, salt, butter, and oil. Are scallions and green onions the same thing? Yes, they refer to the same item at the grocery store. The labels are used interchangeably for the same thing. Are scallion pancakes Japanese or Chinese? Scallion pancakes are also known as green onion cakes or Chinese Pancakes. They originated from the Chinese culture and are an ultra popular Chinese street food. In fact, any Chinese people enjoy them for breakfast. Can you freeze homemade scallion pancakes? We recommend freezing only uncooked scallion cakes – simply prepare them up to the point of cooking, and freeze them with sheets of wax or parchment paper in between each pancake. When ready, cook them from frozen. Can Scallion Pancakes be cooked now and enjoyed later? Scallion Pancakes are best enjoyed right off the stove. Storing them will leave them more limp and chewy rather than crisp, flaky, and buttery. But, the dough keeps very well! Print Scallion Pancakes These Scallion Pancakes are flaky, crispy, salty, and completely addictive. Plan ahead for a bit of rest time for the dough. Add boiling water and mix with wooden spatula (will be thick and rather dry.) Let cool a few minutes. Add the cold water and knead the dough 5 minutes, until it is smooth. If dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour. Dough should be pliable and smooth, a bit tacky (like play-dough) but not sticky.Cover with cling wrap and let rest 1 hour at room temp.Transfer dough to a floured working surface. Divide into 6 even pieces and roll each piece of dough into a 10-inch round. Spread about 1 TB of butter on top of each round. Sprinkle each round evenly with 1/4 tsp table salt, followed by about 1 TB green onions evenly over the surface of each.Roll each round tightly up like a jelly roll (think taquito.) Then take one end and roll it up to the other side into a wheel (think cinnamon bun.) Secure ends tightly pinched. Let the buns rest, covered, for 15 minutes. On a floured surface, gently press bun down to flatten (swirly side up) and roll out to 1/4 inch thick pancakes. Butter may seep out a bit during the rolling.Heat 2 TB oil in a large nonstick pan, over medium-low heat. Once oil is hot, gently place one cake into pan and fry until crispy and browned, shaking pan often. Flip over and fry other side the same way. Repeat with remaining pancakes. Pancakes can be kept on a paper towel lined baking sheet in a slightly warm oven, until all are prepared.Cut into wedges and serve immediately. Video Notes Make sure to leave enough time to let your dough rest for an hour after kneading. This makes it less elastic and much easier to roll out. Make sure your pan stays on medium-low heat while cooking. If it gets too hot, you’ll notice the pancakes start to get charred spots. Feel free to take the pan off the heat between batches if necessary. Scallion Pancakes make a great appetizer to these Thai Peanut Noodles! These goodies are the perfect no-fuss treat to give to all those peeps you appreciate so much. Key Recipe Ingredients Salted Butter Pretzels: Use butter-flavored pretzels for the perfect combination of salty and crunchy. Rolo Candies – The Rolo candies, when melted, add a chocolate caramel layer that complements the crunch of the pretzels. Toasted Pecans – Chopped and toasted pecans add a wonderful nutty flavor and crunch. See below for nut-free ideas. White Chocolate Morsels – The white chocolate morsels are the finishing touch, adding a sweet and creamy layer that balances the saltiness of the pretzels. Substitutions And Variations Here are a few of our favorite variations and substitutions: Add M&M’s: Feel free to press a pretty M&M candy on top. We recommend checking out our M&M cookie recipe while you’re at it. Nut-Free: We’ve made nut-free turtles using colored sprinkles on top, which look super cute too. See these Soft Funfetti Cookies for inspiration. Vary the Pretzels: You can also use square shaped pretzels, regular shaped pretzels, or Christmas shaped ones that are available seasonally. Switch up the Chocolate: Instead of white chocolate, you can use milk or dark chocolate for drizzling over the top. Step-By-Step Recipe Instructions Preheat the oven to 300F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange pretzels on the sheet and place a Rolo candy on each. Using the center rack, bake for 3 minutes. As soon as they come out of the oven, immediately press on the toasted pecans In a small bowl, melt the white chocolate in the microwave. Once melted, drizzle it over the pretzel turtles by using a Ziploc bag. For full list of ingredients and instructions, see recipe card below. How do I drizzle the white chocolate onto the pretzel turtles? Place the melted white chocolate in a small Ziploc bag. Cut a very tiny hole at the bottom corner of the bag and drizzle the chocolate immediately onto the pretzel turtles. How long do homemade Rolo Pretzels keep? Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Arrange pretzels evenly on baking sheets in a single layer. Place a Rolo candy on center of each pretzel – if not centered well, it can melt off the pretzel. Bake 3 minutes on center rack. Remove baking sheet from oven and immediately press on the toasted pecans. Cool completely. Place white chocolate in a small bowl and microwave in 20 second increments, mixing in between, until smooth and melted. Scrape melted white chocolate into a ziploc bag, cut a very tiny hole at bottom corner, and drizzle immediately onto pretzel turtles. Notes Keep an eye on the pretzels while they are in the oven. As soon as the Rolos start to melt, take them out. This will keep the caramel from flowing over the pretzel. To toast pecans, I use my toaster oven and toast the nuts for 2-3 minutes. If using your oven, you can lay chopped pecans in a single layer on a baking sheet at 325F. Brush with a little melted butter, if desired. Toast for about 5 minutes, depending on the oven. Just until aromatic and browned, but watch that they don’t burn. You can also use pre-roasted pecans, but the flavor is much more aromatic after you toast it them for a bit at home.  If chocolate hardens, microwave for a few seconds and resume. ‘She Knew Since Birth’: Family Began Transitioning Child as Baby Boy

After the Supreme Court heard oral arguments Wednesday in U.S. v Skrmetti, the case that will determine whether states may ban transgender medical procedures for kids, one mother told The Daily Signal that her child began to transition as a baby. “She knew since birth,” Michelle Callahan-DuMont said of her 10-year-old, a biological male who says he identifies as a transgender female and goes by the name “Violet.” The family traveled from Arizona to Washington, D.C., to join the American Civil Liberty Union’s “Free to Be Ourselves” rally Wednesday outside the Supreme Court. The high court likely will rule by June on the constitutionality of a Tennessee law protecting minors from irreversible transgender medical interventions. CNN interviewed the same family about having a so-called transgender child. What the left-leaning news outlet didn’t mention is that Callahan-DuMont and her husband began to “transition” Violet when he was toddler age, over 1 year old. “Violet told us when she was 1 and a half,” Callahan-DuMont told The Daily Signal. “She’s been telling us since she could speak.” After yesterday's SCOTUS hearing determining if states can ban trans procedures for kids, @DailySignal interviewed a family who claimed their son knew he was a trans girl since BIRTH?Little did we know the family had already used their child for @CNN stardom. https://t.co/ytyWVk77Qn pic.twitter.com/ikwF8sme5l— Elizabeth Troutman Mitchell (@TheElizMitchell) December 5, 2024 In the interview with CNN correspondent Lucy Kafanov that aired, Violet said he is afraid he will be murdered on the street for identifying as transgender. Callahan-DuMont, who appeared in the interview with Violet and four other family members, said that “it’s hard to hear her say that” before detailing the 10-year-old’s response to the results of the 2024 presidential election. “She asked me three questions after she heard who won the election,” Callahan-DuMont said, then quoted her child. “Are we going to have to move? Are they going to take me away from you? And am I not going to be able to get my medicine?” Former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, signed a bill banning transgender medical procedures for minors in 2022. If the Supreme Court rules that the Tennessee law doing the same thing is unconstitutional, Arizona’s law likely would be overturned as well. Callahan-DuMont appears to have a history of publicly politicizing her child’s story. She runs Instagram and Threads account for Violet, largely focused on advocating for “trans kids.” One Threads post urges people to vote for the Democrats’ Harris-Walz ticket “for Violet’s healthcare & safety.” In the CNN interview, Violet said Republican messaging against transgender ideology in the 2024 election made him feel “dead inside.” “I’ve heard politicians that say, ‘No, you have the wrong gender. You’re confused, Honey,'” Violet said. “No. Myself is a fact, not an opinion, and they don’t get to decide that for me. I get to decide that for myself.” The post ‘She Knew Since Birth’: Family Began Transitioning Child as Baby Boy appeared first on The Daily Signal.

14-Year-Old Football Player Passes Away After Collapsing During Practice

A 14-year-old Pop Warner football player in Connecticut passed away after collapsing during practice. Jahkye Gayle, a member of the Bloomfield Junior Warhawks, collapsed during a non-contact warmup drill at practice. “It was just like a walk through, essentially just light jogging. Nothing strenuous or anything like that,” Trevor Ford, the president of Junior Warhawks Football, said. Emergency medical personnel responded to Gayle immediately after his collapse. 14-year-old Pop Warner football player dies after collapsing during practice. https://t.co/1Ex9dAbSvv — WBRC 6 News (@WBRCnews) December 2, 2024 WFSB reports: On Saturday night, the community came together to honor Jahkye’s memory. Hundreds of his teammates, friends, and family members gathered on the football field. They lit candles and released balloons in the sky to honor him. “It’s hard losing my brother, someone I shared a room with, did everything with, and grew up with. He was overall a great person who changed people with his presence,” said Lamar, Jahkyes’ brother. Jahkye was a talented football player who was known as a jokester among his teammates on the Junior Warhawks Pop Warner Football Team. He was one of the longest tenured players in the youth football program and was scheduled to receive the lifetime achievement award at this year’s banquet. #RIP he was 14! https://t.co/eMsAszQk0t — Dr. Lynn Fynn-derella (@Fynnderella1) December 3, 2024 Per CT Insider: New England Pop Warner Football & Cheer had issued an earlier statement about the death of “one of our own,” extending condolences to Bloomfield and central Connecticut. The statement, shared on Facebook, states Gayle was “more than an extraordinary athlete.” “He was a friend, a source of inspiration and a guiding light for his team,” the statement read. “His impact was felt both on and off the field, and his memory will forever remain a part of us.” Trevor Ford, president of Bloomfield Junior Warhawks Pop Warner, described the student-athlete as a shining star of the program, which launched four years ago. “He was a very bright kid who always took his academics very seriously,” Ford said. “He had a very big personality. He was the sense of humor of the group. It’s always good to have that one individual who is the sun on a dark, cloudy day.” Gayle collapsed during football practice last Wednesday evening, according to Bloomfield officials. When Gayle collapsed, staff and emergency personnel made attempts to revive him, but were unsuccessful, officials said. Jack Smith Moves To “Double-Dismiss” His Case Against President Trump

Jack Smith wants to be SUPER sure that the Court knows he wants his case against President Trump fully dismissed. Super duper certain! This is pretty hilarious, it’s like the kid who sneaks candy all day and doesn’t brush his teeth ever and then thinks he can just brush 10 times the day before he goes to the dentist and it will all balance out. Sorry bud, it doesn’t work that way…. Not for the kid and not for Jack Smith. Check this out: Jack Smith moves to double-dismiss his case against President Trump, without prejudice. pic.twitter.com/pMxhZndYIW — Melissa Hallman (@dotconnectinga) December 5, 2024 Here’s a closer look: FULL TEXT: On November 25, 2024, on the Government’s Motion, see ECF No. 281, the Court dismissed the operative superseding indictment without prejudice. ECF No. 283. The Clerk acted on the Court’s order and the docket now reflects the absence of any pending charges against the defendant and classifies this case as “closed.” Nonetheless, because certain out-of-Circuit caselaw indicates that a superseding indictment does not void the original indictment, see, e.g., United States v. Vavlitis, 9 F.3d 206, 209 (1st Cir. 1993), the Government now supplements its dismissal motion to avoid any doubt that for all of the reasons set forth in the Government’s Motion to Dismiss, the original indictment, ECF No. 1, is also dismissed without prejudice. The Government has conferred with defense counsel, who does not object to the relief requested. Here was our original report on the original dismissal: IT’S OFFICIAL: Jack Smith Case Is DISMISSED! But There’s One Small Detail… IT'S OFFICIAL: Jack Smith Case Is DISMISSED! But There's One Small Detail... It's official, the lawfare case brought by Jack Smith against President Trump is officially GONE -- dismissed by the Court! It all started this morning when Jack Smith filed a Motion To Dismiss the federal case against President Trump: BREAKING: Special counsel Jack Smith has moved to dismiss his federal election interference case against President-elect Donald Trump due to a long-standing Justice Department policy that bars the prosecution of a sitting president. Read more: https://t.co/QGRgJ2cMqq pic.twitter.com/WJ1FBotMMJ — ABC News (@ABC) November 25, 2024 It became official just about an hour ago when Judge Tanya Chutkan granted the Motion to Dismiss: It is official. Judge Tanya Chutkan grants motion to dismiss J6 case pic.twitter.com/ORi7h0pLvs — Julie Kelly (@julie_kelly2) November 25, 2024 So that's great news! We knew it from day 1, the case was always bogus and we told you so right from the jump. Now they head off with their tail between their legs losing once again. But....I told you there was one small detail and it's this: the case is Dismissed "Without Prejudice" and the Judge went out of her way to make a big federal case about that (no pun intended): And just like Jack Smith, Chutkan has to take one final shot suggesting the case can be revisited after Trump leaves office in January 2029. pic.twitter.com/VgBxzqRUM7 — Julie Kelly (@julie_kelly2) November 25, 2024 So what's that mean and why is it a big deal? Because it means the DOJ can refile the case in the future. And look at the highlighted portion below from the Judge's Order: Look, I'm no legal scholar, but that sentence doesn't even make any sense! Immunity afforded to a sitting President expires when they leave office? That is wildly false. Immunity afforded to a sitting President applies to all official duties served while in office and it does NOT expire when they leave office.  That's the whole point!  If it simply expired after they leave office, that would defeat the entire point! Wow, that's a really uninformed sentence to write. And while the case was bogus to begin with, even the flimsy claims in the case apply to when President Trump was in office, not when he was out of office. So what is the point of the highlighted sentence other than to just have one (unintelligent) hissy fit on the way out the door? Wow! I completely agree with Julie Kelly here: I explain why Jack Smith--who burned through an estimated $50 million in two years to pursue Pres Trump--should face an investigation into prosecutorial misconduct, selective prosecution, tampering with evidence, and withholding discovery:https://t.co/qbbNNbfUUP — Julie Kelly (@julie_kelly2) November 8, 2024 Watch it live on Fox News: THIS AFTERNOON: Jack Smith has dismissed the... Trump Election Interference CaseTrump Classified Documents Case This lawfare was always unprecedented. This lawfare was always wrong. This lawfare was always politically-motivated. And this lawfare MUST NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. pic.twitter.com/xigUnwjeeu — Byron Donalds (@ByronDonalds) November 25, 2024 Steve Bannon and Mike Davis nail it here: IF IT WASN'T ABOUT ELECTION & LAWFARE, WHY ARE THEY DROPPING CHARGES? Mike Davis questions remarks of Jack Smith and colleagues that case wasn't about lawfare and the election, why are they dismissing case? Davis believes severe charges should be used.@Mrddmia @BANNONS_WARROOM pic.twitter.com/MC4KJLuFKW — Real America's Voice (RAV) (@RealAmVoice) November 25, 2024 Here's more, from ABC News: The judge overseeing Donald Trump's election interference case has dismissed the case, after special counsel Jack Smith asked the judge to toss the case due to a long-standing Justice Department policy that bars the prosecution of a sitting president. Smith earlier Monday moved to dismiss Trump's election interference case and the appeal of his classified documents case ahead of Trump's impending inauguration, due to the DOJ's presidential immunity policy and not because the charges lacked merit. U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan dismissed the charges against Trump without prejudice, leaving open the highly unlikely possibility of a future prosecution. In a two-page opinion, Judge Chutkan wrote that dismissing the case without prejudice is "appropriate" and would not harm the "public interest," agreeing with Smith's argument that Trump's immunity would not cover him when he leaves office. "Dismissal without prejudice is also consistent with the Government's understanding that the immunity afforded to a sitting President is temporary, expiring when they leave office," Chutkan wrote. However, it's extremely unlikely that any prosecutor would attempt to bring the same charges in the future, in part because the statute of limitations for the alleged crimes will have expired by the time Trump leaves office in four years. My take? There's no way in hell this case ever gets brought again in the future. This case was brought for one reason and one reason only: to distract President Trump and hurt him in the election. And it failed even at that one job.
