Agatha All Along Gives the Coven Its First Test in “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials”

Movies & TV Agatha All Along Agatha All Along Gives the Coven Its First Test in “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials” Down the Witches’ Road… and into the worst beach house you’ve ever seen. By Emmet Asher-Perrin | Published on September 26, 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share They’ve rushed right in, but now they actually have to walk the road… Recap Image by Chuck Zlotnick, Marvel Television The coven begins their journey, and Agatha lets the group know that everyone will have to face their greatest fear on the Road. Sharon has realized that perhaps she came to the wrong party and sits down on a tree root, hoping she can find her way back. Her bag is absorbed by the ground and she’s nearly taken with it. Agatha takes this moment to let the group know that they should never leave the road itself on their journey. Jen asks the Teen who he is, and the whole group learns that he has a sigil on him. Agatha insists that she’s got no idea who did it, or what his identity might be hiding, but that it’s a fun mystery all the same. The group continue down the road to a Hamptons-y beach house, are redressed for the occasion, and given a card with a riddle—the answer to the riddle is wine. A bottle appears with five glasses, and as they search for a wine key, Jen takes the Teen aside and lets him know that Agatha is dangerous; rumor has it that she gave up her own child for the Darkhold. No one knows if he died or wound up a demon or a servant of some dark power. Once the bottle is open, Sharon downs her glass without pause and the rest follow suit, except for Agatha, who dumps her wine into a houseplant. A random timer appears and begins counting down thirty minutes. Sharon’s face begins to swell, and everyone else follows with the same symptoms. Jen asks about Sharon’s symptoms first since she’s ahead of everyone, but when the swelling goes down quickly, she recognizes the poison as Alewife’s Revenge, and knows that the next stages are a whole lot of discomfort followed by hallucinations and death. The group realize that Agatha didn’t drink the wine and demand that she does so, since the entire coven must participate. Agatha beats on the windows to get out and cracks the glass, but when the Teen offers to drink in her place, she finally downs some wine. Sharon has a hallucination and passes out on a couch. Jen starts giving the group a list of the items needed to make the antidote and they set off in twos while Jen gets the “cauldron” ready in the kitchen sink. The group begins hallucinating as they go; Alice finds her mother, devastated over the death of her grandmother and insisting that she must kill herself; Lilia sees Renaissance figures surrounded by death; Jen is confronted by a man dressed in doctor’s gear, who tells her she’s an “inconvenient” woman and tries to drown her in the sink. Lilia also makes a comment that they must “save Agatha.” Once all the items are collected, they reconvene in the kitchen and put Sharon on the table, noticing that the cracked window is starting to let in sea water—they’re under the ocean. The group assembles the potion in the sink, and Agatha has her own hallucination when everyone is prompted to add their own hairs; she sees a cradle and finds the Darkhold inside. The potion is assembled, but it doesn’t turn the right color. Jen begins to panic, doubting her own abilities, but Agatha calms her—she insists that she always hated Jen, but left her alone because the work she does is too important. Jen remembers the final step to the potion; blood from someone unaffected by the poison. The Teen’s blood is given, and everyone drinks the antidote but the timer doesn’t stop running; they’ve forgotten Sharon. They feed her the potion as the last second runs out. The oven in the kitchen opens, which Lilia has no interest in entering—but the windows break and the ocean rushes into the house, so they have no choice. The group fall down a slide and emerge back on the road in their original clothes. Sharon, the Teen realizes, has died. Commentary Image by Chuck Zlotnick, Marvel Television Given the awkward pacing on some of these MCU shows, I was worried that we might run through the entire Witches’ Road in a single episode. While I do wish the episodes themselves had longer run times, it’s great that we’re sticking to it for (hopefully) the whole ride. Okay, I didn’t bring it up last week, but now we have to talk about the Teen and the child stuff and the possible outcomes this will lead to. We knew there was something about a kid from the premiere because of Agatha’s house in Westview having an empty child’s room. Now we have word from Jen that Agatha’s reputation centers around the idea that she exchanged her own child for the Darkhold, and that no one knows what became of him. And we can’t find out who the Teen is yet because someone doesn’t want any of them to know… At first glance, I’m annoyed with this potential arc for two reasons: First off, Wanda’s arc was already about her children and what losing them did to her. Women can care about so many other relationships that are not offspring (or romantic attachments to men, the other favorite), and using them as the only motivation in their lives is plain lazy. The second reason is that, of course, the very worst thing that a woman can do is be a bad mom! Don’t you know that is the height of evil, not doing everything in your power to keep your children safe and happy? And no, I’m obviously not saying that women should endeavor to be terrible parents; what I’m saying is that we often don’t know how to conceptualize evil in women without somehow making it about children. Every wicked witch and evil queen and nasty stepmother is a testament to this tired trope, proving that the worst thing a man can do is probably mass murder or genocide (strong maybe on that, really), but the worst thing a woman can do is be horrible to a young person who relies on her. Bad dads are commonplace, but bad moms are horror movie material. Now, it’s still possible that the show is using this all as a misdirect, and we’re going to get something far more interesting out of Agatha’s backstory. We’re certainly being set up for a further reveal, and don’t have the entire picture yet. So here’s hoping that the picture is worthy of Agatha, and she doesn’t turn out to be a circumstantial villain who is only like this because someone took her kid away. I loved the moments in this episode where she shored up Jen, where she recognized Lilia’s suffering, because Agatha doesn’t need to be good, but she is a natural leader and can’t make anything of that impulse while she’s busy being out for Number One. Which leads us to the Teen. The suggestion here is that perhaps he could be her long lost son, but that seems annoyingly tidy for the purposes of the plot. Among some fans, the assumption is that he will become the MCU’s version of Wiccan, a member of the Young Avengers. In the comics, Wiccan is Wanda’s son, Billy—but given the film universe’s penchant for twisting things around a little, the Teen could honestly be anyone beneath that sigil. I hope they do something fun with it. We’re getting a little more info on the coven in general, and I’m not sure how I feel about the fact that the most visceral flashback was given to Jen? It’s realistic, certainly, but the fact that she’s the only one met with physical violence in the hallucinations seemed pointed in a way that deserved a lot more attention. In the last episode it’s mentioned that she’s well over a hundred, and yet the series hasn’t really dealt with the implications of that yet. If Jen was born in the United States—and I assume she was—then she has known a very different life from the rest of this coven. It’s unclear if Lilia knows death in her past due to plague or something else, but on Alice’s side, we’re clearly dealing with familial mental illness. I’m very interested to see how this plays out because it’s the most intriguing backstory on paper so far—the idea of having a parent who has magic, but that ability doing nothing to aid them in their own struggles makes Alice’s journey that much more painful and intimate. Is Sharon truly dead? I suppose that could go either way, but presumably it happened because no one remembered to add her hair to the dang antidote. It’s a perfect first loss, born of them not truly coming together as a coven yet. In any case, she wasn’t the fourth name on the list… Tarot Readings and Witchy Thoughts Image by Chuck Zlotnick, Marvel Television Their argument for the Teen not drinking is that he’s not a member of the coven (then how can he seek any rewards from the journey?) and also that he’s underage! Which is mostly hilarious because… I mean, it used to be very common for teenagers to imbibe, and still is in plenty of countries. Curious as to why the Road would follow modern legality over what’s more common. The real answer is that this is a Disney show, but it’s still absurd. We don’t really need to see Sharon’s hallucination because we already know what haunts her; Wanda’s control over Westview. We hear her utter the witch’s name, and she’s promptly knocked out. Of course, the oven is in reference to Hansel and Gretel shoving the witch into the oven to kill her. That house was giving the perfect gross rich whitewashed beach vibe that I personally cannot stand. Jen complaining that she looked like one of her clients was perfect. Hysteria! Trailer Gets Metal During the Satanic Panic

News Hysteria! Hysteria! Trailer Gets Metal During the Satanic Panic We’re not sure how any ’80s copy machine produces flyers with that much black… By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on September 26, 2024 Image: Peacock Comment 0 Share New Share Image: Peacock There’s a series coming to Peacock just in time for Halloween that takes place in the 1980s and centers on a small town in the grip of a slew of murders and, of course, Satanic Panic. The show is appropriately called Hysteria! It got its first trailer today, and it looks ridiculous. Here’s the official synopsis, which gives you the premise: When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them. The trailer is confusing in tone but appears to be going for comedy horror. How much it leans into laughs versus screams is unclear, but the odds are good that there will at least be one metal song played, which may make you do either depending on a variety of factors. Hysteria! comes from Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville). It stars Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Julie Bowen (Modern Family, Happy Gilmore), Emjay Anthony (Physical, Chef), Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Summer, Luckiest Girl Alive), Kezii Curtis (Charm City Kings, Secret Headquarters) and Nikki Hahn (Magnum P.I., American Housewife). Recurring guest stars include Bruce Campbell, Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North, Elijah Richardson, Milly Shapiro, Allison Scagliotti, and Jessica Treska. All episodes of Hysteria! can be streamed on Peacock starting October 18, 2024. Check out the trailer below. Elevation Trailer Sees Anthony Mackie Battling Sea-Level Loving Monsters

News Elevation Elevation Trailer Sees Anthony Mackie Battling Sea-Level Loving Monsters They don’t like to be high up By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on September 26, 2024 Image courtesy of Vertical Comment 0 Share New Share Image courtesy of Vertical Earth has a new apex predator, and humans are its prey. That’s the conceit of Elevation, which sees Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Endgame), Morena Baccarin (Deadpool & Wolverine), and Maddie Hasson (Malignant) trying to survive in a world where monstrous aliens (presumably) have come to our planet and are more than willing and capable of killing any person they come across. Here’s the official logline, which gives us a bit more info: Set in the post-apocalyptic Rocky Mountains, a single father (Mackie) and two women venture from the safety of their homes to face monstrous creatures to save the life of a young boy. While the trailer doesn’t explicitly call this out, based on the focus on a carefully demarcated border line, my guess is the alien monsters can’t live or go into high elevations, which is why humanity appears to have camped out in the high peaks. The clip also suggests that this is an action-packed sci-fi thriller, as the characters Mackie, Baccarin, and Hasson play are burnished with guns they use liberally against the aliens attacking them, as they try to get the medical help the young boy left in the Rockies needs. Elevation is directed by George Nolfi (The Banker, the writer of Oceans Twelve) with a script from John Glenn, Jacob Roman, and Kenny Ryan. It’s set to premiere in theaters on November 8, 2024. Check out the trailer below. [end-mark] The post Elevation Trailer Sees Anthony Mackie Battling Sea-Level Loving Monsters appeared first on Reactor.

‘Stunning Failure:’ Senate Report Blasts Secret Service

THE CENTER SQUARE—A bipartisan Senate report released Wednesday blasts the U.S. Secret Service for several significant failures that led to the near-fatal assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump in Butler County, Pennsylvania, over the summer. The bipartisan report indicates that security knew the shooter was on the roof minutes before Trump was shot. Meanwhile, a bill that would increase the Secret Service protection for former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance, now awaits President Joe Biden’s signature. The new Senate report lays out a litany of failures from the Secret Service, including failure to delegate responsibilities to agents and officers, failure to keep the key buildings cleared, failure to work will with local law enforcement, who were helping with security, and more. The report includes a list of failures, including that the Secret Service did not properly respond after the would-be assassin was identified as a suspicious person over an hour before Trump took the stage. A stunning paragraph from the report lays out the gravity of some of the mistakes: “Approximately two minutes before shots were fired, the USSS Security Room, located on the rally grounds, was told that there was an individual on the roof of the AGR building,” the report said. “Shortly before shots were fired, a USSS counter sniper observed local officers running towards the AGR building with guns drawn.” Critics have blasted the agency from its poor planning of the event, its slow and clumsy response and its unwillingness to share details publicly after the incident. The former head of the Secret Service resigned after a disastrous Congressional hearing on the issue where lawmakers from both sides took her to task. The report also said an inexperienced agent had trouble getting the drone working and spent hours calling a tech support hotline for help. The agents apparently also had problems with their radios, something that is common, according to the repot. “From planning missteps, to the siloed and flawed communication to the lack of effective coordination between law enforcement, to the breakdowns in technology, the Secret Service’s failures that allowed an assassination attempt on former President Trump at his July 13 rally were shocking, unacceptable, and preventable – and they led to tragic consequences,” said Chairman Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich. Lawmakers called for accountability and ongoing oversight. “Our initial findings clearly show a series of multiple failures of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) and an inexcusable dereliction of duty,” Ranking Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said in a statement. “Not only did USSS fail to ensure the AGR roof was adequately covered, they were also aware of a suspicious individual with a rangefinder for at least 27 minutes and did not delay proceedings or remove former President Trump from the stage, even after being informed that the suspicious individual was on the roof of the AGR building.” Paul said that federal law enforcement agencies had “obstructed” the Congressional inquiry into this issue. “What happened on July 13 was an accumulation of errors that produced a perfect storm of stunning failure,” added Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. “It was a tragedy and completely preventable from the outset.” The bill that would increase Trump’s protection comes after the former president survived his second assassination attempt this year and would give presidential-level Secret Service protection to all nominated presidential and vice presidential candidates. The U.S. Senate voted unanimously to pass the bill on Tuesday evening. It has already passed in the House. As The Center Square previously reported, President Joe Biden recently told reporters that the Secret Service “needs more help.” Originally published by The Center Square. MSNBC’s ‘Interview’ of Harris Shows How Left-Wing Media Are Treating Election as Coronation

MSNBC’s ‘Interview’ of Harris Shows How Left-Wing Media Are Treating Election as Coronation

Vice President Kamala Harris completed her second whole interview of her mostly cloistered presidential campaign Wednesday night. Frankly, it was an embarrassment for American corporate media and gives the lie to the idea that the Harris campaign is all about defending “democracy.” The interview was exactly what one would expect if you’d followed the Harris campaign at all. It was a series of mostly softball questions, delivered in the friendliest of confines on left-wing MSNBC, conducted by an admiring and sycophantic host, Stephanie Ruhle. That setup was practically telegraphed ahead of time. Five days before the interview, Ruhle went on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” and claimed that Harris didn’t have to answer any substantive questions from the media. “Kamala Harris isn’t running for perfect,” Ruhle heatedly told the New York Times’ Bret Stephens, another guest on the program. “She’s running against [former President Donald Trump]. We have two choices. And so there are some things you might not know her answer to. And in 2024, unlike 2016, for a lot of the American people, we know exactly what Trump will do, who he is, and the kind of threat he is to democracy.” Ruhle said it was utopian—“nirvana”—to think we the people might get substantive answers from Harris on how she’d govern if elected president. Really, what a crazy idea that some of us may have that we should live in a free society, where leaders are expected to account for themselves, and the people are the boss. Basically, Harris isn’t Trump, so anything at all is good enough, right? How interesting it is that after those comments, the Harris campaign almost immediately announced that they would allow Queen Kamala to come down from on high and grant Ruhle a humble request for an audience. It was a “coincidence” that didn’t go unnoticed by commentators on X. hahahahaStephanie Ruhle slobbered over Kamala a few days ago, saying she doesn’t have to do interviews because democracy is at stake, and the Harris campaign immediately called her up and says, “You’re our kind of interviewer.”Incredible. https://t.co/ziPPQEtYzo— Bonchie (@bonchieredstate) September 25, 2024 Stephanie Ruhle goes on Bill Mahar and lick spittles Kamala Harris saying it doesn't matter that she doesn't answer questions or what she believes. Peter Baker calls her "the great" for landing a pretaped interview because of it. https://t.co/LCqF3ioY1w— Stephen L. Miller (@redsteeze) September 25, 2024 It is really bad form for MSNBC to have someone argue that Kamala Harris doesn't need to take questions at all and then have that same person conducting the interview with her. Like if they care about journalistic ethics at all, they should assign a different interviewer. https://t.co/YdPcJXOuvK— Zaid Jilani (@ZaidJilani) September 25, 2024 As for the interview, Harris was asked a few gentle questions about her proposed policies, to which she responded with mostly shallow, bumbling non-answers. Unsurprisingly, Harris has few ideas about how to cover the $1.7 trillion in spending she’s proposed other than to raise corporate taxes on “billionaires.” Harris additionally had no answer for how she would get this corporate tax hike through with the Republican Party controlling the Senate, if they win back control in November. So, we just have to assume more borrowing and more inflation. Great stuff. Here is Harris addressing increasing housing and other costs in society, but her grand idea is just to say, over and over, that our problems must be addressed “holistically.” NEW: Vice President Kamala Harris says "holistic" three times in a 15-second period. The VP proudly showed off the word during an interview with MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle."Looking holistically at the connection between that and housing and looking holistically at the… pic.twitter.com/Z9DMdR97Qj— Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) September 25, 2024 Using “holistically” in this way is akin to using other meaningless corporate-speak buzzwords like “creating synergy” that are intended to sound profound, but mean nothing. I suppose it’s slightly better than saying that the plan for lowering costs is lowering costs. NEW: Kamala Harris is asked about her plan to lower the cost of living, says she will do that by lowering the cost of necessities. Remarkable.Question: What will you do to lower costs?Answer: Yeah. I first of all, thank you both for being here and yours is a, a story I hear… pic.twitter.com/UQUNCnvesO— Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) September 20, 2024 There was hardly any real substance to the interview at all. Aside from a handful of policy questions, Ruhle and Harris joshed about accusations that Harris never worked at a McDonald’s in her youth as she claimed. Harris said she made fries, not burgers. But besides laughing and taking potshots at Trump, she didn’t really get into specifics or dispel the notion that the story about her working at a fast-food chain might be made up. There’s really nothing more to say about these tepid, jovial back-and-forths, but it is notable how similar this was to Harris’ previous CNN interview with host Dana Bash. A handful of “tough” questions received only the lightest of follow-up questions and a large portion of the interview was fluff, wasting the time of viewers. That would be fine if Harris was generally out on the campaign trail talking to the press and conducting interview after interview like a typical presidential candidate in the age of “democracy.” It’s wholly unacceptable when one considers that the vice president was dropped into this race in a last-second swap, in which she never even answered to Democratic primary voters. We really are supposed to just accept that the reason to vote for Harris is that she’s not Trump, just as Ruhle said. When the MSNBC host was later asked about Harris’ vague policy answers, particularly on why the Biden administration ended up keeping many of Trump’s tariffs in place, Ruhle made the excuse that the issue is “complicated.” It’s totally fine that Harris didn’t give clear and direct answers, because “we are not talking about clear or direct issues,” she said. Ah, yes, as Sun Tzu doubtlessly once said, the ways of the great leader must be mysterious and opaque to those who must follow. Since when are members of the press expected to run PR for the politicians they interview? What we should take from this MSNBC interview is that America’s media don’t want to ask her tough questions in an election. They want to conduct and plan her coronation. They are hardly even interested in getting answers about the way she will promote left-wing policies. Just being in power is apparently good enough. In some sense, Harris’ gilded tower campaign is even more disturbing than the Biden basement campaign. Any pretense of illuminating the policy positions of the candidates before the people is gone. Hard questions won’t be asked. “Joy” and “vibes” will suffice. The post MSNBC’s ‘Interview’ of Harris Shows How Left-Wing Media Are Treating Election as Coronation appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Big Tech-Government Collusion: Biden-Haris Admin, Meta, Google, and Others Launch AI Partnership to Combat “Disinformation” and “Hate Speech”

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. The current US White House seems to be exploring every possibility that might secure another avenue for what opponents (and quite a few lawmakers) refer to as “collusion” with (Big) Tech. A new scheme has just been announced, that revolves around the “AI” and “disinformation” buzzwords, and includes the US State Department, Meta, Anthropic, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Nvidia, and OpenAI. Looks like quite an “ensemble cast” – or “usual suspects” – right there. It’s called, Partnership for Global Inclusivity on AI, and it was announced by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken along with a decision to bankroll programs “identifying disinformation using AI” with $3 million. We obtained a copy of the report for you here. Those are expected to point to whatever is considered “mis/disinformation” but also, “prevent online hate from spreading to offline violence for members of religious minority communities.” Not for nothing, the “partnership” was announced in New York City, and on the sidelines of the ongoing annual UN General Assembly meetings, which have already produced some controversial decisions. Here, according to an official press release, Blinken was launching this, and other initiatives “to harness the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) to advance sustainable development globally.” Is AI really advancing rapidly? And do the AI sub-components (machine learning, ML) really sustain anything at this point, other than themselves, i.e., their developers and governments around the world using, for example, ML to push for mass surveillance-enabling projects such as digital ID? These are not the questions Blinken is likely to be asked, and that’s just as well because he likely would not know how to respond. Instead, he told the world that the tech companies would “commit” over $100 million of their own “to unlock AI’s potential as a powerful tool for sustainable development and improved quality of life in developing countries while maintaining an unwavering commitment to safety, security, and trustworthiness in AI systems.” This statement itself reads like it was generated by, say, ChatGPT – but, fear not, because there is real intent behind vacuous platitudes. They rear their head in the two reports announced at the same time – The Global AI Research Agenda, and, The AI in Global Development Playbook. It’s about what your democracy-loving ancestors would warn you about, without ever knowing about AI, but fully aware of what governments can and will do: censorship (this time around centered around “AI”) introducing “AI” stamps that can be turned into flagging memes (satire) at the drop of a dime. The second report has more to do with the current White House getting all its ducks in a row (some call it, “collusion”) in this campaign. “Whole-of-government-governance and oversight frameworks that specifically address the misuse of AI technologies,” is what’s cited in the report, as well as private companies supporting “exchanges of information between government officials, policymakers, workers and their organizations and other stakeholders to voice concerns around how AI is designed and deployed in LMICs (developing countries), and factor this guidance into product development.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net.
