James Gunn wants DC Studios to be able to make a little bit of everything

Max / Warner Bros. Between its reanimated corpses and humanoid animals, HBO’s new Creature Commandos series doesn’t really look or sound anything like Warner Bros.’ other upcoming projects featuring characters from DC’s comics. But DC Studios co-head James Gunn says that’s by design and part of his plan to make the studio a place where any kind of story can be greenlit if it’s got the right script. While DC Studios has plans for fresh, live-action takes on Batman, Superman, the Green Lanterns, it’s kicking off its latest cinematic universe with Creature Commandos, an animated series about Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) secret squad of monster mercenaries. The show will feature a couple of nifty connections to previous DC shows like Peacemaker and films like The Suicide Squad, but its offbeat characters and TV-MA rating are part of why Gunn (DC Studios’ co-hed alongside Peter Safran) sees it as the start of something new. In a recent interview with Variety, Gunn described Creature Commandos as a “soft intro” that will waste no time establishing how metahumans, monsters, and magic are all core parts of DC Studios’ interconnected world. It took the old DCEU a while and cost it quite a bit of money to introduce some of its more fantastical heroes and villains in ways that felt organic for the big screen. But Gunn noted that part of the reason he felt so bullish about greenlighting Creature Commandos (which he also wrote) boiled down to the simple fact that, in animation it basically “costs as much to create a battlefield as it does to create a kitchen.” Gunn also explained that Creature Commandos felt like a good jumping off point because of its ability to convey to audiences that DC Studios isn’t limiting its output to family-friendly fare. “We can make something that’s for general audiences, like Superman,” Gunn said. “We can make something that’s violent and sexual, like [Creature Commandos] — which I didn’t think was that violent and sexual; Peacemaker is both more violent and more sexual — but I want every project to have its own voice. It isn’t about creating a world in which everything is all sex and violence. It’s about creating a world in which we can tell the story about, you know, one type of character in different genres.” DC Studios wouldn’t exactly be the first to test that idea out — Marvel’s been trying to pull it off for the past few years with mixed results — but it’s interesting to hear that Gunn intends for it to be central to the studio’s brand. And after Creature Commandos premieres tonight on Max, we’ll have a chance to see how the idea actually plays.

OpenAI’s 12 days of ‘ship-mas:’ all the new announcements

Image: The Verge OpenAI is planning to launch new features, products, and demos for 12 days straight — starting with the full release of its o1 reasoning model. OpenAI’s 12 days of “ship-mas” have officially begun, with the company set to reveal some new features, products, and demos during all 12 days starting December 5th, just a few days shy of the second anniversary of ChatGPT’s explosive launch in 2022. According to the company, ChatGPT now has over 300 million weekly users. The event started with the release of its improved OpenAI o1 reasoning model out of preview, along with a new $200 ChatGPT Pro subscription that offers unlimited access to GPT-4o, Advanced Voice Mode, and an exclusive version of o1 that Sam Altman says “can think even harder for the hardest problems.” Sources tell The Verge that OpenAI will also launch Sora, its text-to-video AI generator. There’s likely a lot more to come, and we’re keeping track of all the announcements from OpenAI. You can follow along below as we continue to report on all the latest updates.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s early access period won’t include full ray tracing

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s early access period won’t include full ray tracing

Image: Bethesda Softworks If you pay the premium to play Indiana Jones and the Great Circle early on PC, the game won’t initially include full ray tracing. The game’s early access period for Premium Edition and Collector’s Edition buyers launches at 7PM ET today, but full ray tracing won’t be added until December 9th, when the game launches for everyone else. “Following the release of the update, shadows, reflections, and global illumination will all be accurately rendered in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle using Full Ray Tracing, elevating image quality,” Nvidia says in a blog post. And DLSS Ray Reconstruction will be “coming soon,” according to an emailed media alert. The belated addition of the graphics options could sting for early access buyers, especially given that early access isn’t cheap: the Premium Edition, for example, costs $99.99, a $30 increase over the game’s standard $69.99 price. The game already has hefty PC specs, including that GPU hardware ray tracing is required even at minimum. Jim Kjellin, the CTO of Great Circle developer MachineGames, gave us a reason for as to why that’s the case: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle uses a technique called global illumination to light the environment and characters. Our engine MOTOR, used by MachineGames, uses hardware raytracing to calculate this. While this isn’t what players may typically think of as “ray tracing,” the compatible hardware is required to do this is in a performant, high fidelity way. Great Circle will also be available on Xbox Series X / S, and it’s coming to PS5 in spring 2025.

iPadOS 18.2 RC now available with 8 new features

Today, Apple released iPadOS 18.2 RC. The company continues to move forward on the iPadOS testing cycle and plans to launch this upcoming software update to users next week This build should improve general stability while continuing to master the new Apple Intelligence features. These are the main features available with iPadOS 18.2 beta RC: Genmoji: Create custom emojis by combining two figures; users can type a prompt like “monkey with pink hat” to make an entirely new emoji; here’s how to use it; Image Playground: Users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. This app is built right into apps like Messages and is also available in a dedicated app; having trouble with the waitlist? Check this; Image Wand: “Rough sketches can be turned into delightful images, and users can even select empty space to create an image using context from the surrounding area” in the Notes app; Create Images expansion: Another Apple Intelligence feature available with iPadOS 18.2 beta is the ability to create an image when you highlight text in the Notes app; ChatGPT integration: When you feel Apple Intelligence isn’t enough, you can allow ChatGPT to access Writing Tools and other features for a better response; if you are tired of Apple Intelligence asking to confirm every prompt, do this. Despite these Apple Intelligence features, Apple is also adding a few more features to iPadOS 18.2 during the beta test, such as: Find My changes: With beta 2, Apple offers the option to Share Item Location with an “airline or trusted person.” This feature creates a link that lets someone easily access your AirTag’s location. Photos app tweak: Videos in the Photos app no longer zoom in or out when you tap on them. TV app tweak: The TV app navigation bar can be customized. Users can choose their favorite shortcuts to be shown. it’s unclear what else Apple is bringing with iPadOS 18.2. With iOS 18.2, the company is testing an all-new Mail experience. However, it might never be released to iPad users. Here’s what Apple says about this upgrade:  Mail is introducing new ways for users to manage their inboxes. On-device categorization organizes and sorts incoming emails into Primary for personal and time-sensitive emails, Transactions for confirmations and receipts, Updates for news and social notifications, and Promotions for marketing emails and coupons. Mail also features a new digest view that pulls together all of the relevant emails from a business, allowing users to quickly scan for what’s important at the moment. BGR will let you know if we find anything new in today’s iPadOS 18.2 RC. Apple is also seeding the Release Candidate versions of iOS 18.2 and macOS 15.2. macOS 15.2 RC now available with new Apple Intelligence features

As the testing cycle nears its end, Apple just released macOS 15.2 RC. This upcoming software update adds new Apple Intelligence features while Apple works on improving the system’s general stability. So far, macOS Sequoia 15.2 RC includes the following Apple Intelligence feature: Image Playground: Users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. This app is built right into apps like Messages and is also available in a dedicated app; ChatGPT integration: When you feel Apple Intelligence isn’t enough, you can allow ChatGPT to access Writing Tools and other features for a better response; Create Images expansion: Another Apple Intelligence feature available with macOS 15.2 beta 4 is the ability to create an image when you highlight text in the Notes app. While Genmoji wasn’t available in the first beta versions, we hope Apple adds it to the RC build. However, this function might launch at a later date. With it, you can create custom emojis by combining two figures; users can type a prompt like “monkey with pink hat” to make an entirely new emoji; here’s how to use it. We also don’t know other features Apple is planning for macOS 15.2 RC, which is expected to be released next week. With macOS 15.1, Apple added iPhone Mirroring improvements and the first Apple Intelligence features, which include: Writing Tools: Proofread your text, rewrite different versions until the tone and wording are right, and summarize the selected text with a tap. Improved Siri: With a new design, Siri can maintain context between requests. Even if you stumble over words or shift what you’re saying mid-sentence, Siri can understand what you actually want. Priority notifications: They appear at the top of the stack, letting you know what to pay attention to at a glance. Notifications are summarized, so you can scan them faster. Clean Up: This feature can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo without accidentally altering the subject. Summarization: Apple Intelligence can now summarize more than just Messages and Mail notifications. Alongside macOS 15.2 RC, Apple is seeding the Release Candidate versions of iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2. BGR will update this article once we learn more about the new features. tvOS 18.2 RC now available with Snoopy screensavers and more

A couple of weeks after seeding tvOS 18.2 beta 3, Apple has just released tvOS 18.2 RC. This new version is finally adding some of the delayed features announced at WWDC 2024. vOS 18.2 RC now supports the new 21:9 aspect ratio, which is perfect for Apple TVs connected to projectors. The company has also added a few other options, such as 2.37:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1, DCI 4K, and 32:9. They are available under Apple TV’s Audio and Video settings. Besides that, Apple finally added the Snoopy screensavers to tvOS. References about this feature coming with tvOS 18.2 were already spotted by MacRumors a few weeks ago. According to the publication, Apple is working on four categories of screen savers, including Snoopy, TV and Movies, Music, and Soundscapes. While MacRumors got an early look at some of those screensavers, Apple said we’ll see the Snoopy and TV and Movies screensavers “later this year.” The Music and Soundscapes options are new and will likely be added alongside the previously announced options eventually. However, Apple might delay the "TV and Movies" screensavers as we haven't seen them in previous betas. Finally, another feature that might soon be available with tvOS 18.2 RC is robot vacuum cleaner integration with the Home app. It’s unclear which robot vacuums will support this feature, even though Apple says this feature is still coming in 2024. Apple is expected to release tvOS 18.2 next week. After many tvOS 18 features have made their debut, I can’t wait for my Apple TV to get support for these other new capabilities. The new screensavers will make a nice addition, while the 21:9 aspect ratio will be perfect for using XGIMI’s new Horizon S Max projector, which was recently reviewed by BGR. watchOS 11.2 RC now available to Apple Watch developers

A couple of weeks after the last beta, Apple released watchOS 11.2 RC to Apple Watch developers. At the moment, it’s unclear what’s new with it. Unlike other software updates from Apple, watchOS 11 has already delivered all the features announced at WWDC 2024. With watchOS 11.1, Apple added two Apple Intelligence features powered by iPhone 15 Pro or newer devices, which include: Reduce interruptions: An all-new Focus Mode understands the content of your notifications and shows you the ones that might need immediate attention, like a text about picking up your child from daycare later today. Summarization: Apple Intelligence can summarize all your notifications. Since watchOS 11 is a mild update after a packed watchOS 10 release, it’s unclear what Apple has in store for Apple Watch users. For example, the company unveiled the new sleep apnea detection with watchOS 11. However, it still needs to be rolled out to more countries. With watchOS 11.2 RC, we might see it coming to more regions. Apple says sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition where breathing stops repeatedly during sleep. “The condition, which is estimated to impact more than 1 billion people worldwide, goes undiagnosed in most cases. If left untreated, sleep apnea can have important consequences on health, including an increased risk of hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiac issues.” To detect sleep apnea, the Apple Watch uses an accelerometer to monitor small movements at the wrist that are associated with interruptions in normal respiratory patterns. This is tracked by a new Apple Watch metric called Breathing Disturbances. While some of these disturbances are normal, they are important to track as they can be used to help understand restfulness of sleep and, when occurring frequently over multiple nights, may be associated with sleep apnea. Users can view their nightly Breathing Disturbances in the Health app, where they are classified as elevated or not elevated and can be viewed over a one-month, six-month, or one-year period. Alongside watchOS 11.2 RC, Apple also released the RC versions of tvOS 18.2 and visionOS 2.2. We’ll let you know if we find anything new in these Release Candidate builds. visionOS 2.2 RC now available with a major new feature

Apple just released visionOS 2.2 RC. This new build brings a long-awaited feature: wider Mac Virtual Display options. Mac Virtual Display is one of the OG features of Apple Vision Pro. However, with new wide and ultrawide modes, the spatial computer offers a more immersive experience for professionals to work on a spatial environment. Here’s what this feature is all about: Using Mac Virtual Display is like having an expandable, ultrawide screen that wraps around you. It’s the equivalent of having two 4K displays sitting side by side — everything looks astoundingly sharp and incredibly detailed. Now, with an ultrawide view, Apple says it feels like you have two physical 4K displays sitting side by side on a desk, except you don’t have something limiting the two displays. This Apple Vision Pro feature is perfect for anyone multitasking on a Mac, and it feels better than having several windows floating around. With this feature, you can open several apps at once and visualize them before you with Vision Pro’s incredible displays. Not only will this boost productivity, but it will also make this spatial computer a more compelling upgrade than two Studio Displays, as you can use it for more than just mirroring your Mac once you finish working. Apple is expected to expand Mac Visual Display next week when visionOS 2.2 is expected to be released to all users. While rumors about a new Vision Pro are contradictory, the latest reports expect Apple to update this product next year with a more capable processor, most likely the M5. However, a revamped interaction is still a few years away. Alongside visionOS 2.2 RC, Apple has seeded the Release Candidate versions of watchOS 11.2 and tvOS 18.2. Below, you can learn more about visionOS and other Vision Pro features.
