California school districts will be forced to limit or prohibit cell phone use in public schools after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill, along with many others, into law.The bill, AB 3216, was approved by a bipartisan vote after being authored by Republican Assemblyman Josh Hoover.The bill states that schools must "adopt a policy to limit or prohibit the use by its pupils of smartphones while the pupils are at a school site or while the pupils are under the supervision and control of an employee or employees of that school district, county office of education, or charter school."School districts must develop and adopt their new rules by July 1, 2026, and update their policy every five years.'These devices in a child's everyday life can contribute to lower test scores, anxiety, depression, and even suicide.'There are limitations to the bill that allow exceptions, or "special circumstances," under which a student may not be prohibited from having a smartphone."We know that excessive smartphone use increases anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues — but we have the power to intervene," Newsom said, per the Sacramento Bee. "This new law will help students focus on academics, social development, and the world in front of them, not their screens, when they're in school," the governor added.Bill author Hoover thanked Newsom for the "major victory" for the mental well-being of children, along with the hope of improving academics."Research continues to demonstrate the potential harms of smartphone use among children," the Republican claimed. "The growing use of these devices in a child's everyday life can contribute to lower test scores, anxiety, depression, and even suicide."Democrat state Sen. Angelique Ashby opposed the bill over concerns that children would not have access to their phones during an emergency, such as a school shooting. However, the law does indeed grant exceptions for emergencies.Phones can also be allowed as part of a student's specific learning plan, likely for special needs.A trend in phone bans has increased in several states and private schools across the country. States with outright bans on smartphones in public schools include: Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia.Newsom's flurry of bill signings has also come with scrutiny, particularly surrounding the Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act of 2024.The new law has been accused of being too harsh on content creators who make memes or obvious parodies using artificial intelligence.California is even facing a lawsuit from content creator Mr. Reagan, whose real name is Christopher Kohls. Kohls posted an AI-manipulated parody video about the Kamala Harris campaign in July. His lawsuit argues that California is "flagrantly" using state power to "force private social media companies to censor private citizens’ speech by purging election-related AI-generated content."The new law will require online platforms to develop reporting procedures for users to flag content that has been missed by the website, so that it can be taken down if not in accordance with the law.Like Blaze News? Since Deion Sanders took over the head coaching position for the Buffaloes football program at the University of Colorado Boulder, Jason Whitlock has been unapologetically critical of the toxic culture that’s ensued as a result of Sanders’ ineffective leadership. Now that football season is back in full swing, Jason is ready to analyze the coach’s every move, starting with the team's lucky overtime victory against the Baylor Bears last Saturday. “They know they should have lost,” he says, adding that the win is nothing to be proud of since “Baylor’s not any good.” - YouTube www.youtube.com According to Jason, the only reason the Buffaloes won is because “the other coach handed [them] the game with one of the worst defensive calls in the history of football.” “You leave three guys one-on-one on the final play of the game?! It's the dumbest thing I've ever seen,” he says. As for the Buffaloes, Jason says their performance is “exactly what we saw last year.” “Do you remember when they beat Colorado State to get to their 3 and 0 start? They got lucky! ... It’s the exact same thing all over again,” he says pointing to the team’s unfortunate predicament — they “have no right tackle,” “their guards are just OK,” and “their freshman holding tackle ... the all-American five-star kid that they thought would fix everything” is floundering. That’s not to say that the Buffaloes did nothing right, however. Jason does give some credit where it’s due. “Hats off to them for diversifying their offense,” he says. “They did switch up some formation stuff and gave [quarterback Shedeur Sanders] some different looks.” “But at the end of the day, this was about an idiot head coach at Baylor lining up in the wrong defense,” he says. To make matters worse for Baylor, apparently the head coach, Dave Aranda, threw "a kid on the team way under the bus rather than taking responsibility for calling the wrong defense.” “It's one of the worst coaching performances in game and after game that I've ever seen,” says Jason. And as for Deion, he’s still “a clown” in Jason’s eyes. “His team hasn't really improved. I don't see him winning more than five or six games this year,” he sighs. Besides the fact that Sanders is still the coach, another reason Jason doesn’t see the team improving this season has to do with the other main leader on the team — Sanders’ son and the quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Last week, “People called out Shedeur for not shaking the hand of the Colorado State quarterback after the game,” and, unfortunately, Deion defended the behavior. “The week before, he walked off the field with two minutes on the clock.” “Shedeur is a reflection of Deion. What exactly is Vice President Kamala Harris' plan to fix the economy and drive down prices for Americans?That's the question with which Fox News anchor Sandra Smith confronted Democratic strategist Kelly Hyman on Monday, leading to a contentious interview when Hyman failed to give a substantive answer.'Not sure that pitch is going to work for voters. "Sorry guys, I can't do anything about it."'"You were explaining to me how Kamala Harris has a pitch to voters that will bring down prices that, we should remind everyone, ran up under her and Biden's administration. So what's the plan to tackle these prices, like groceries up 25%?" Smith asked.At first, Hyman tried to shift responsibility for the economy from the president, claiming that "ultimately it's up to Congress.""So you don't think that Kamala Harris would bring down prices?" Smith shot back.When Hyman doubled down on her claim that "there are very limited things that the president can do" and reasserted that "ultimately Congress needs to act in order to help the American people," Smith hit Hyman with a reality check."Not sure that pitch is going to work for voters. 'Sorry guys, I can't do anything about it,'" Smith explained. "If you're living on a fixed income in this country, it is brutal right now. So the question is: What is her economic plan? What is her pitch to voters to bring these prices down? Trump keeps giving interview after interview detailing exactly how he plans to do it. We're all just saying, 'What is her plan?'"It was at that moment that Hyman tried to move the discussion from Harris to Donald Trump, claiming the former president's economic vision "harms the American people." That claim, of course, ignores the fact that Trump was already president and that Americans generally believe the economy was better when he was in charge."OK, what is Harris' plan? We're waiting," Smith asked again.In the most substantive part of the interview, Hyman — instead of pitching Harris' economic plan — said Americans can look it up for themselves. Then, for some reason, she boasted about Harris' controversial plan to ban price-gouging."Okay, there's a lot of aspects to it in regards to looking at it online," Hyman said. "So let's talk about lowering the grocery cost because that's something that's brought up. The viewers can look at this online. She talks about certain things in regards to advancing the first federal ban on price-gouging on food and groceries, to set clear rules to the road to make clear that big corporations can't unfairly exploit consumers —"Referring to allegations of price-gouging, Smith immediately challenged, "Is that happening?""I don't know if that's currently happening or not because I'm not privy to that type of information, but there are people costing a lot of money in regards to groceries," Hyman responded.Hyman may not be an economist and "privy to that type of information," but Harris' attempt to blame inflation on price-gouging fell flat because it's not true. The reality is that grocery store margins are contracting, evidence that grocers are not price-gouging customers.At the end of the interview, Hyman lashed out at Smith for allegedly interrupting her, claiming it is "disrespectful" because she is a woman."It seems you're having a hard time articulating her plan," Smith told Hyman."That's not true. A 10-year-old Florida boy was arrested for a SnapChat threat to "shoot up" a high school, the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office said.A Wakulla High School student on Wednesday reported to school staff that he was in a SnapChat conversation with an unidentified person who stated he was going to "shoot up your school" and "It’s y'alls last day," officials said.The school resource officer also on Thursday obtained an arrest warrant charging the juvenile with violation of Florida Statute 836: making a written or electronic threat to kill, do bodily injury, or conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism, officials said.Wakulla High School is in Crawfordville, which is just over a half hour southwest of Tallahassee on the Florida panhandle.With that, school staff around 4 p.m. told the school's resource officer about the threatening social media post, officials said, and the resource officer initiated a criminal investigation.The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office said it asked for assistance from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and its Cyber Crime Unit, Counter Terrorism Unit, and Organized Crime Unit joined the investigation.The agencies worked throughout Wednesday afternoon and evening and into Thursday's early morning hours to identify the source and location of the threat, officials said.Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents and a school resource officer early Thursday morning "made contact with the subject who made the online threat at his residence" in Woodville in Leon County and interviewed him, officials said. Woodville is located approximately halfway between Crawfordville and Tallahassee.The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office said it told Wakulla County school officials that same morning that there was no imminent threat to the high school or any other district school and that the juvenile who had made the threat had been identified and would be charged.The school resource officer also on Thursday obtained an arrest warrant charging the juvenile with violation of Florida Statute 836: making a written or electronic threat to kill, do bodily injury, or conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism, officials said.That same day, the juvenile’s father turned him in, and the juvenile was taken into custody by authority of the arrest warrant, officials said.Anything else?Similar threats from juveniles have prompted another Florida sheriff to begin shaming the suspects on social media, NewsNation said.More from the outlet:Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he’s tired of the hoaxes targeting students, disrupting schools and sapping law enforcement resources.
