Let’s compare Apple, Google, and Samsung’s definitions of ‘a photo’

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge We’ve been tracking the slow redefinition of photography for years now here at The Verge — I am pretty sure we kicked off the “what is a photo” debate as it relates to smartphone photography on The Vergecast sometime in 2018, with a live show on the topic in 2019. But things started changing fast this year, as more and more companies roll out AI tools that totally redefine how images are made at every step of the photography process, from composition to capture to editing. We’ve written about some of those tools and what they can do, and we’ve published pieces explaining how the widespread availability of these tools makes their impact meaningfully different — and more dangerous — than tools like Photoshop. But as it happens, executives... Continue reading…

Google is bringing its smart home panel to all Google TV devices

Image: Google Google announced today that it’s extending all the software features of its new Google TV Streamer to every Google TV device. This includes its smart home control panel, a new sports page, and new Gemini-powered features. According to Google, the updates will come to all devices, including Google TVs, Chromecasts with Google TV, and third-party Google TV streamers (like the Onn available at Walmart), in the coming weeks. The biggest upgrade for smart home users is the new Home panel. This smart home control panel is accessed via a tile in the quick settings panel and lets you control devices connected to Google Home. You can do things like turn lights on or off or dim / brighten, trigger a Movie Time automation, and adjust your... Continue reading…

PlayStation’s next State of Play will cover more than 20 PS5 and PSVR 2 games

Photo by Antonio G. Di Benedetto / The Verge Get ready to see more PlayStation games. Sony is hosting a State of Play presentation tomorrow, September 24th, and the company says it will feature news and updates on “more than 20 upcoming PS5 and PS VR2 games from studios around the world.” Sony says the State of Play will be more than 30 minutes long, and you’ll be able to watch it at 6PM ET / 3PM PT on YouTube and Twitch. The show is taking place just two days before preorders for the PS5 Pro are available. Sony’s initial presentation about the PS5 Pro was a little lacking, so hopefully we’ll get some better looks at games that will be enhanced by the new console. In a May State of Play, Sony shared information about Astro Bot, one of the best games of the year, and Concord, which... Continue reading…

Nothing’s open-style headphones leak just before launch

Image: WinFuture Nothing is expected to reveal its Ear (Open) headphones tomorrow, but a set of leaked images from WinFuture seems to have spoiled the surprise. The new earbuds appear to have a curved band that hooks around the back of your ear for a potentially more comfortable fit. The speaker, which rests just outside your ear, could come with a 14.2mm driver, according to WinFuture. Just like Nothing’s other earbuds, it looks like the Ear (Open) will sport a transparent design on the stem with the company’s branding. Additionally, WinFuture reports that the new earbuds offer up to eight hours of battery life without the case (or 30 hours with it). The buds are rumored to come with touch controls, the ability to connect to multiple devices at once,... Continue reading…

Roman Gladiator’s Sarcophagus Uncovered in Turkey’s Izmir

In the Selçuk district of western Turkiye’s İzmir, a sarcophagus believed to belong to a Roman gladiator from the third century BC was uncovered. This sarcophagus was later repurposed in the fifth century AD to hold the remains of 12 individual skeletons, with the lead sarcophagus identified as having belonged to a Roman gladiator named Euphrates. The sarcophagus is decorated with epic inscriptions on the outside, and three cross reliefs were added inside during the later repurposing. The discovery was made during ongoing excavations at Ayasuluk Hill and the St. Jean Monument, which are being conducted under the leadership of associate professor Sinan Mimaroğlu from the Department of Art History at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University. These excavations have the support of various institutions and are being carried out with permission from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, reports The Daily Sabah. Epigraphic analysis was conducted by associate professor Ertan Yıldız. If you want the dip spicy, use “Hot” sausage. Onion– use white, yellow, or sweet. Jalapenos– I usually use 2 jalapenos. Use 1 for less heat. Garlic Powder– can use 2 minced garlic cloves instead. Chili Powder and Cumin– add chili flavor to the dip. Can of Chili– Use chili with beans or without beans. I use canned Hormel chili. Velvetta– adds a lot of creamy cheese flavor. Colby Jack Cheese– cheddar cheese or shredded mexican cheese blend can be substituted. Rotel Tomatoes– use “Hot” Rotel tomatoes for extra heat. Do not drain the tomatoes. How To Serve Chili Cheese Dip Tastes great with either tortilla chips or Frito Scoops. If desired, add a little color and extra flavor by adding chopped green onions on top. Make It A Little Spicy Or Super Spicy To make this dip just a little spicy, use regular breakfast sausage, only 1 jalapeno, and mild Rotel tomatoes. For extra spicy, use “Hot” breakfast sausage, 2 to 3 jalapenos, and “Spicy” Rotel tomatoes. Can Be Made In A Slow Cooker To make this easy dip in a slow cooker, brown the sausage and add all ingredients to a slow cooker. Cook on LOW for a few hours, stirring halfway through. You can turn the slow cooker to WARM and serve it right out of the slow cooker. How To Store Leftover dip will keep in an airtight container for 4 days. Reheat in microwave. Leftovers are great over a baked potato or oven-baked fries.
