Snapchat is getting its biggest redesign in years

The new “Simple Snapchat.” | Image: Snap Snapchat is undergoing its biggest redesign in years by simplifying from five to three tabs: one for messages and Stories with friends, one for the camera, and another for a TikTok-like feed of full-screen videos from creators and publishers. The redesign, dubbed “Simple Snapchat,” was announced onstage Tuesday at Snap’s annual Partner Summit in Los Angeles. “It brings Stories closer to conversations, it simplifies content discovery, and it brings people straight into our camera to express themselves,” Snap CEO Evan Spiegel tells The Verge. Until now, Snapchat has consisted of five main tabs: one for the Snap Map, private chats, the camera, Stories, and Spotlight, its competitor to TikTok and Instagram Reels. Once this redesign is... Snapchat’s AI selfie feature puts your face in personalized ads — here’s how to turn it off

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge If you’ve tried out Snapchat’s AI-generated selfies, you might want to double-check a setting that lets Snap use your face in “personalized sponsored content and ads,” as spotted by 404 Media. The feature, called My Selfie, lets you and your friends create AI-generated images of yourself based on photos you share with Snapchat. When using the feature for the first time, Snapchat prompts you to agree to terms that include using “you (or your likeness)” in ads: You also acknowledge and agree that by using My Selfie, you (or your likeness) may also appear in personalized sponsored content and ads that will be visible only to you and that includes branding or other advertising content of Snap or its business partners without compensation to... The first Thunderbolt 5 dock appears to have arrived

The Kensington SD5000T5. | Image: Kensington The first Thunderbolt 5 cables arrived in July, and now it looks like we’re finally getting the first Thunderbolt 5 dock! Kensington has just announced the Intel-certified SD5000T5 EQ is now available to buy, seemingly beating every rival to the 120Gbps single-cable docking punch. (I just checked: Hyper, J5Create and OWC’s docks aren’t yet available.) The new dock claims to support up to three 4K monitors or two 8K monitors on Windows, or dual 6K monitors on MacBook Pros with M1 Pro chips or better. It also offers up to 120Gbps speeds for connected peripherals — assuming your computer has a Thunderbolt 5 port, anyhow. Last we checked, only a single $4,500 version of the Razer Blade 18 has that port, though PCWorld points out the $3,899... Continue reading…

Android phone makers are itching to copy iPhone 16’s Camera Control button

Before last week's iPhone 16 event, several reports detailed a brand-new button for the 2024 iPhones. The so-called Capture button became official last week when Apple confirmed that all four iPhone 16 variants will have a Camera Control button on the right side, under the Side button. Apple went on to reveal the complex functionality of the Camera Control button. It's not just about snapping pics and videos or tweaking photo settings without touching the screen. The new button will also be involved in Apple Intelligence when a new Visual Intelligence feature arrives on the iPhone at some point. The AI of the future will need eyes, and the Camera Control button is a quick way to make that happen. A future update will also turn the Camera Control into a two-step shutter button later this year. Will Android vendors copy everything about the Camera Control button? That's something I wondered as Apple demoed the new features. Unsurprisingly, it turns out that at least three companies might introduce similar buttons on future devices. Continue reading... Apple releases beta 4 of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1

As the iPhone 16 release approaches, Apple keeps testing iOS 18.1. With beta 4, Apple keeps adding more Apple Intelligence features. Alongside iOS 18.1, Apple is also seeding the fourth testing versions of iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. With the previous beta, Apple added the following Apple Intelligence features: Clean Up: This Photos app feature can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo without accidentally altering the subject. Summarization: Apple Intelligence can now summarize more than just Messages and Mail notifications. Besides that, iPhone 15 Pro users can take advantage of these functions with the latest iOS 18.1 beta: Writing Tools: Users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps Improved Siri: With a new design, Siri can maintain context between requests. Even if you stumble over words or shift what you’re saying mid-sentence, Siri can understand what you actually want. Priority notifications: They appear at the top of the stack, letting you know what to pay attention to at a glance. Notifications are summarized, so you can scan them faster. Priority messages in Mail: Elevate time-sensitive messages to the top of your inbox, like an invitation that has a deadline today or a check-in reminder for your flight this afternoon. Reduce interruptions: With iOS 18.1 beta 1, an all-new Focus Mode understands the content of your notifications and shows you the ones that might need immediate attention, like a text about picking up your child from daycare later today. Email summarization: Tap to reveal a summary of a long email in the Mail app and cut to the chase. Record and transcribe calls in the Notes app: Just hit record in the Notes or Phone apps to capture audio recordings and transcripts. Apple Intelligence generates summaries of your transcripts, so you can get to the most important information at a glance. Smart Reply in Mail: Quickly draft an email response with all the right details. Apple Intelligence can identify the question you were asked in an email and offer relevant selections to include in your response. BGR will let you know once we learn more about what’s new with iOS 18.1 beta 4. Alongside this version, Apple is also releasing the fourth beta version of iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 to developers.
