By Molly Templeton | Published on September 12, 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share The trailer for Alice Lowe’s Timestalker has it all: dildos, reincarnation, a very cute cat, perms, fate, heart-shaped wigs, a seemingly evil Nick Frost—okay, so this is a very specific definition of “it all.” But if the idea of a loopy, wry British comedy about reincarnation and love is your jam, this trailer is about as charming as possible. Lowe writes, directs, and stars in the film, the summary of which doesn’t quite do it justice: Follow hapless heroine Agnes (Alice Lowe) through time as she repeatedly falls for the wrong guy, dies a grim death, and is reincarnated a century later, before meeting him again and starting the cycle anew. It is one story told over many periods, all with the messy thrills and spills that come with daring to follow your heart. Or maybe your loins… As Agnes reappears through the centuries, her hairstyle changes, but is ever dramatic; her willingness to die for the wrong guy (Aneurin Barnard) shifts until she tries to convince him it’s his turn to kick the bucket (“It doesn’t hurt that much … That’s a lie, it does really, really hurt”). The people around her seem to recur as well, from a shouty Nick Frost to an amused and/or nauseated Jacob Anderson. Lowe’s work as an actress goes back to the beloved cult series Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace; she also wrote and starred in Sightseers, and wrote, directed, and starred in Prevenge. This one has quite the horror pedigree, hailing from writer-director Gary Dauberman, who co-wrote It and a handful of films in the Conjuring cinematic universe. James Wan, of Saw, Insidious, and Conjuring series fame, is among the producers. Salem’s Lot is the story of a writer, Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman), who returns to his hometown to work on his next book—only to find the town at the mercy of a nasty vampire. There’s a beautiful and spooky old house, and some creepy children; people are killed in terrible and creative ways. Salem’s Lot was previously adapted as a miniseries in 1979, and again in 2004, and the 2021 series Chapelwaite was based on King’s short story “Jerusalem’s Lot,” a prequel to the novel. In honor of that series, Mark Benedict took a look back at the long life of Salem’s Lot in “Vampires on Main Street: A Complete Guide to ’Salem’s Lot.” Along with Pullman, Max’s version stars Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark, Pilou Asbæk, and John Benjamin Hickey. Amid debate in Congress over requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote, federal prosecutors in Alabama charged an illegal immigrant with obtaining a false identity in 2011 and voting unlawfully in multiple elections, including two presidential contests.  The Justice Department announced that the illegal immigrant from Guatemala agreed to a guilty plea after being charged with nine counts. The illegal alien, identified as Angelica Maria Francisco, 42, voted in elections in 2016, 2020, and 2021, the Justice Department said. Francisco most recently lived in Russellville, Alabama, the agency said. According to the plea agreement, Francisco assumed the false identity in 2011 to get a U.S. passport, which she used to travel to and from Guatemala in 2012, 2015, and 2018.   “Using the same false identity, Francisco also registered to vote in Alabama in 2016 and voted in the 2016 and 2020 primary and general elections,” the Justice Department said in a Sept. 5 press release. “And in 2021, Francisco used the same false identity to apply for and receive a renewed passport, which she used to travel to and from Guatemala in 2022.” U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona conducted the investigation with Joseph R. Wysowaty, resident agent in charge of the Atlanta office of the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service. Alabama’s top election official, Secretary of State Wes Allen, a Republican, said the state is focused on making sure that only legal voters cast ballots. “I have been very clear that a top priority of this office is ensuring only eligible American citizens are voting in Alabama elections,” Allen said in a public statement. “I want to thank the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Alabama for their diligent efforts [in] investigating and charging this individual. We will continue to assist law enforcement in every way possible as they prosecute individuals who vote illegally in Alabama elections to the fullest extent of the law.”  In July, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.  In July, House and Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Bill Hagerty of Tennessee and Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, signed a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland asking whether the Justice Department is investigating or prosecuting cases of voting by illegal immigrants.  The lawmakers’ letter notes that South Carolina discovered that voter registration forms were given to noncitizens, that Georgia found in 2022 that 1,600 noncitizens had attempted to register to vote, and that Ohio increased verification efforts after noncitizens were found on voter rolls.  “Plainly, there are opportunities for and instances of noncitizen voter registration, and so the critical question is whether the laws against doing so are being enforced by your department,” Republican lawmakers’ letter to the attorney general says. “There appear to have been few prosecutions by your department under these laws, and there is no indication that you have been pursuing cases in places like Georgia and Ohio where aliens have been caught registering or voting,” the letter adds. Moraes was granted the authority to command tech companies to delete content deemed misleading by the electoral court, leading to the removal of several posts by Bolsonaro himself. Insights from knowledgeable sources suggest that US diplomatic pressures were crucial in shaping these events. By August 2024, Justice Moraes had extended his reach, blocking the American social media platform X throughout Brazil and imposing hefty fines on users accessing the platform. The current administration’s influence was further underscored with the appointment of Elizabeth F. Bagley, a Democratic stalwart and a seasoned diplomat from previous Democratic administrations, as the new US Ambassador to Brazil.
