$1.3B in unpaid taxes recovered from high-income Americans

The Treasury Department announced Friday that it had recovered $1.3 billion of unpaid taxes from high-income Americans. The recovered money comes as part of the effort to ensure wealthy individuals pay the taxes they owe under the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, according to the department’s release.

IRS says it has recovered $1.3 billion in unpaid taxes from rich Americans

The IRS said Friday that it has recovered $1.3 billion in unpaid taxes from high-income Americans who had either failed to file their returns or who hadn't fully paid what they owed.  The announcement, made jointly with the U.S. Treasury Department, is aimed at highlighting the agency's ramped-up enforcement efforts against tax cheats, which have been funded under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.  That IRS funding has proved controversial, with some Republican lawmakers ...

Dad shares family's confusion when his young son demanded 'people chicken' for dinner

One of the best parts of having kids is having a full-time, front row seat to the way they interpret and use language as they grow. There's the classic mispronunciations of "spaghetti," of course, but there are also one-of-a-kind terms they coin based on their limited vocabulary and the unique way they look at the world. Kids say the darnedest things, and as Dillon White shared on Instagram, one of those darned things could be a young child requesting "people chicken" for dinner. Not just requesting, but demanding: "I WANT PEOPLE CHICKEN!!"People chicken. There are only so many ways to interpret that, all of which could land you on the FBI's radar.Of course, it was a small child saying this, so there had to be an explanation. White explained that he and his wife tried everything to get their kiddo to clarify what he meant by "people chicken," including having him draw a picture of what he was wanting. Unfortunately, the stick figure person he drew did not help relieve any concerns that their child might be a cannibal. Finally, White's 7-year-old daughter came up with a solution that revealed what her younger brother wanted. It was not, in fact, chicken made out of people. Phew.Watch: See on Instagram It's true. Once you see Colonel Sanders' bow tie as a stick figure, you can't unsee it. Even KFC's official account responded to the video, writing, "You see it once, and you can't unsee it." HA. White was not alone in his kid seeing the stick figure Col. Sanders. "The SAME thing (conversation) happened to us 22 years ago!! My toddler was practically throwing himself trying to make us understand that he wanted 'Old Man Chicken'!!!!!! And yup, it was KFC he was asking for. We have referred to it as ‘Old Man Chicken’ all these years now ?!!" shared on commenter."About halfway through we figured out what he was talking about but that’s only because my kids have been saying for years that the KFC man is a stick figure with a really big head. Tell Mason he’s not the only kid who thought that.Lol ???" shared another."I think I’ve been working with children too long because the instant you said people chicken my brain said 'that’s kfc,' ? wrote another.Other people chimed in to share their kids' hilarious naming conventions for chicken places:"My son was in tears for 'Pinky Toe.' Turns out he thought the Chick-fil-A emblem was a foot ?," wrote one parent."Lol. My daughter refers to Chick-fil-A as 'foot' because their logo actually reserved a footprint. So interesting thinking of the different ways that children see things that we adults don't. It's amazing!" shared another. "My kids call Buffalo Wild Wings 'stinky skunks' because from a distance, the logo looks like a skunk to them. We went through a similar very confusing moment to figure that one out as you can imagine, ?♀️?" shared another.White is right. We should let kids name everything. They're so much better at it than adults are. You can follow Dillon White on Instagram here and TikTok here. This article originally appeared on 2.7.24

Husband shares how he used to think of himself as the 'main character' of his marriage

There is certainly no shortage of stories from women highlighting the glaring disparity between society’s expected responsibilities of husbands vs. wives. Some are a bit more lighthearted, poking fun at the absurdity. Others reflect utter frustration and had-it-up-to-here-edness with partners not doing their share of the work. However, self-proclaimed “Clueless Husband” J Fisher’s honest, thoughtful retrospection on the subject shows that it’s not just female partners noticing that things need to change. In a now-viral TikTok video, Fisher describes how he used to consider himself the “main character” of his relationship. What exactly did that look like? Early on in his marriage, it looked something like this:“Say we'd be going on a trip. My partner at that point in time would be doing the laundry, vacuuming the house, making sure the dishes were done. I would think, I would literally think like, ‘Well, yeah, we don't have to do that. That's you wanting to do that. It's not what I want to do,’” he explained in the clip. @jfisher62 What NOT to do as a husband #fyp #husbandsoftiktok #wivesoftiktok #fairplay #parenting #feminism #dismantlethepatriarchy #relationship #marriage #support #partnering ♬ original sound - J Fisher Fisher later shared how his wife would then get everything ready for said trip, while he would simply pack for himself. This continued even after they had kids. It became worse, actually. “My partner would do all the work to get all of them ready to make sure they were bathed, snacks packed, and I would get myself ready.”Looking back, Fisher can plainly see how this behavior was “not okay.” But how did he think this was acceptable in the first place? After some reflection, he realized that it was simply the standard being modeled to him from an early age. “I saw my own father do this quite a bit where he would take care of his own needs. So, I know I didn't learn it from nowhere," he said. "But I also had to unlearn it because it never was okay. I thought that my role was to do all these things outside of the home and that the home was women's domain. I saw that modeled and even taught as the way it should be, but, oh my gosh, is that not partnership? And that sucks.”After coming to this revelation, Fisher’s opinion is that if you approve of this division of labor, that you “shouldn’t be in a relationship.” Hard to argue with that.Hoping that he can further illustrate a better partnering mindset in a way that “may help it click for some guys,” Fisher has all kinds of insightful TikToks focused on taking accountability and expanding emotional intelligence. In them, he often names therapy, setting boundaries, finding community and accessing personal joy (rather than relying on a partner to fulfill all emotional needs) as major tools for creating a more equal relationship. @jfisher62 Good intention ≠ Truly loving ?? “I’m Sorry” doesn’t begin to do it justice. #fyp #foryoupage #marriage #longtermrelationship #partner #husbandsoftiktok #wivesoftiktok #accountability #healingjourney #grief #stagesofgrief #dabda #acceptance ♬ original sound - J Fisher And perhaps the best part—there doesn’t seem to be so much shame around the subject. Fisher acknowledges his own goodwill while still admitting to displaying less-than-healthy behavior. It’s hard not to feel like if maybe this kind of honest, yet compassionate reexamination of gender stereotypes were more commonplace, we’d all collectively be a lot farther ahead. 'Couple' was asked what they love about each other. Turns out they're siblings with a beautiful bond.

'Couple' was asked what they love about each other. Turns out they're siblings with a beautiful bond.

"Love" is one of the most powerful words in the English language, yet it's also one of the most broadly defined. We use the word "love" for so many things that are neither the same nor equal—our families, our friends, our romantic partners, our hobbies—even our favorite foods. When we think of a "love story," we almost exclusively imagine a tale of romance, but that's not the only kind of love story there is. Sometimes the strongest, most meaningful loves of our lives aren't romantic at all.David Shane creates videos in which he approaches couples in public and asks them to share three things they love about each other, resulting in some major #couplegoals moments. But one "couple" he approached had a surprising answer to that question, one that moved both them and the people watching the video afterward to tears. Blane approached a man and woman sitting on a bench at a mall and asked his signature question—"Excuse me, could you give me three things you love about each other?" The woman responded, "Well, this is my brother," and proceeded to share that she loved that they were related and that they care about each other—typical family stuff. But as she started elaborating, the beautiful bond they share became more and more apparent. This is one you just have to watch: See on Instagram People were understandably moved seeing this brother and sister express their love for one another through serious life challenges."This is what love looks like. ? What a truly beautiful sibling relationship, ???" wrote one commenter."I gotta stop watching these right after I do my makeup," wrote another. "Gosh, I love questions like this that remind us to SEE two people sitting in a mall as the true, precious humans they are," shared another. "We walk past people every day, all day long and never get to know their story. There must be so many stories we miss. This is the beauty of social media. I wish both of these sweet souls the very best. So glad they have each other."Many of us have people with whom we share a deep connection but may not always share our feelings freely. This video is a good reminder to let our loved ones know what they mean to us and to treasure all the love stories in our lives, whether romantic, platonic or familial. Incredible 'bird feeder' photos give a whole new perspective on our feathered friends

The pandemic has caused many people to reevaluate their surroundings. When you’re stuck at home more often than you’d like, you start to pay a lot more attention to what goes on in your own backyard. This type of introspection inspired wildlife photographer Carla Rhodes to get a closer look at the furry friends that live near her home in the Catskill mountains of New York. What she found was magical. “The winter of 2020-2021 was particularly brutal to humankind. After months of enduring the Covid-19 pandemic, we were now collectively slogging through winter. As a result of being stuck at home, I focused on my immediate surroundings like never before,” Rhodes said in a statement.Rhodes positioned a DSLR camera trap beneath her bird feeder to get an up-close glimpse of the wildlife that came to sample her delicious seeds. The results are an incredible series of photos of birds and other woodland creatures from a vantage point most people never see. Rhodes calls her project, "Beneath the Bird Feeder." The birdfeeder photos also gave a new glimpse into the behavior of several species of birds and rodents that call the Catskills home.“As I got deeper into the project, intriguing observations emerged,” Rhodes says. “I noticed distinct repeat visitors such as a Dark-Eyed Junco with an overgrown beak, a deer mouse with a notched ear, and an irruption of Red-Breasted Nuthatches. Dark-Eyed Juncos always showed up at the crack of dawn and Northern Cardinals would always be the last visitor of the day as dusk turned into evening.”Here are 15 of the most captivating photos that Rhodes captured from beneath her bird feeder.1. Dark-eyed junco"Often overlooked and considered drab ground-feeding birds, Dark-Eyed Juncos hold a special place in my heart due to their funny and curious behaviors. Every day they were first to arrive beneath the bird feeder," Rhodes says. "Dark-Eyed Juncos were one of the most frequent and curious subjects beneath the bird feeder."2. Dark-eyed junco3. Dark-eyed junco4. Tufted titmouseAccording to All About Birds, the tufted titmouse is "common in eastern deciduous forests and a frequent visitor to feeders."5. Mourning dove"Observing Mourning Doves was a daily pleasure, especially when they gathered to form a clean-up crew beneath the bird feeder. Mourning doves are monogamous and possibly mate for life," Rhodes writes. 6. Mourning dove 7.  Mourning doves8. Blue jay"Blue Jays are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds," All About Birds says. "Their fondness for acorns is credited with helping spread oak trees after the last glacial period."9. Northern cardinal"Northern Cardinals were always the last to show up beneath the bird feeder, shortly after dusk every evening," Rhodes writes.10. Black-capped chickadee"Little flocks of Black-capped Chickadees enliven the winter woods with their active behavior and their cheery-sounding chick-a-dee callnotes as they fly from tree to tree, often accompanied by an assortment of nuthatches, creepers, kinglets, and other birds," the Audubon field guide to North American birds says. 11. Black-capped chickadee12. Eastern gray squirrelEastern gray squirrels are important members of forest ecosystems as they play a vital role in dispersing seeds.  13. American red squirrelThe American red squirrel is known for its distinct bushy and dark red tail with hints of a white outline. 14. American red squirrel15. Northern short-tailed shrewIf you see a northern short-tailed shrew, be careful. It's venomous and paralyzes its victims with poisonous saliva. In humans, a bite can cause swelling and intense pain. Woman shares sweet exchange with 92-year-old grandpa who invited her over for 'sleepover'

Loneliness is one of the most dangerous health problems in the United States, although it’s seldom discussed. Psychology Today says loneliness has the same mortality risks as obesity, smoking, alcoholism and physical inactivity.A meta-analysis from Brigham Young University found that social isolation may increase the risk of premature death by up to 50%. The problem with loneliness is that people suffer in silence and it afflicts the ones we don’t see. A TikTok user who goes by the name Megan Elizabeth recently shared a touching story on social media about how her grandfather was feeling lonely so he reached out to her. The story shows what can happen when one person is brave enough to confront their social isolation and the important role grandkids can play in their grandparents’ lives. It started when Megan's grandpa texted her to ask if she'd like to come over for a sleepover. “I haven’t been feeling well and miss you. We can order food and watch a mystery show. Love, grandpa,” he wrote.Megan was happy to go see him, so grandpa made a series of requests to make the sleepover a hit.“Could you pick up applesauce? The cinnamon kind,” he asked. “And if you go somewhere with mash potatoes, I would like that because I have no teeth and can only eat soft things. Ha!”He also wanted some strawberry ice cream for dessert. “Thank you. You are my favorite granddaughter,” he ended the conversation. Megan later noted that she’s his only granddaughter. See on Instagram Megan came by with a big bag of food and some ice cream and the two hung out and watched his favorite black-and-white “mystery movies.” When it was time for bed, grandpa hadn't forgotten how to put her to sleep. He got her a glass of water to put by the bed in case she got thirsty and left a flashlight on the nightstand just in case his 29-year-old granddaughter got scared. The next morning, at 5:30 am, he watched her leave for work. See on Instagram Grandfather and granddaughter grew up close to one another. Megan lived with her grandparents when she was young while her parents saved up money for a house. When they bought one, it was right across the street.“I am so lucky to have grown up with my grandpa and my grandma (rest in peace),” she wrote on Instagram. “I feel so happy. I am thankful for my grandpa and he will never understand how much love he truly has shown me. And more importantly, the love he showed my grandma while she was alive. I believe in love and loyalty because of this man. He is my hero,” she added. See on Instagram Megan's time with her grandfather made her realize a valuable lesson about her life."I think one of the most important realizations I have had recently is that it’s important to live in the moment but it is important to live in the now with intent," she wrote on Instagram, "so that when you are 92, you look back and smile at all the people you loved, the memories you made and the life you chose to live."This article originally appeared on 04.27.22

Badfinger

Instead of Badfinger, they should have called themselves Bad Deal because that’s what they got.Badfinger was signed by The Beatles’ Apple Records. Paul McCartney wrote their first worldwide hit “Come and Get It” for Ringo Starr’s film (with Peter Sellers), “The Magic Christian.” The Beatle connection haunted the band. If you didn’t look too close they sorta looked like a younger version of the Fab Four. And people tended to hear Beatle trappings in Badfinger songs but the comparisons were usually unflattering. Starting in late ‘70 Badfinger produced four great songs, “No Matter What” (from “No Dice”)” “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue” (both on “Straight Up”). The fourth, the ballad “Without You,” was composed by guitarist/singer Pete Ham and bassist Tom Evans. While originally recorded by Badfinger, it was covered by John Lennon’s buddy Harry Nilsson. His version went to #1 on the pop charts. That didn’t really sit too well with the group. Leaving Apple in ‘74, or walking away from the label’s self-demolition, Badfinger signed with Warner Records. Of course, the six-figure advance disappeared. No real mystery, their management took it. Now consumed by financial troubles, Ham left the group. The following year, depressed over everything that had happened, he visited his accountant who told him he was broke. He then went home and hung himself.Badfinger was done. Drummer Mike Gibbins did session work and guitarist Joey Molland formed a band that opened for Peter Frampton. In the late ‘70s there were attempts to revive Badfinger. The surviving members even hit the road. Following an ‘83 U.S. tour, Evans, exhausted from battling for his share of songwriting royalties, especially for “Without You,” followed Ham and committed suicide by hanging. Decades later, the song “Baby Blue” was heard during the climatic finale of the AMC crime drama series “Breaking Bad.” As a result, the song and band had a brief revival. ### The post Badfinger appeared first on RockinTown.
