Food Stamps Accepted At Thousands Of Liquor And Tobacco Stores, Contributing To Healthcare Fiasco

Nearly 5,000 stores with words related to “liquor” or “tobacco” in their names accept food stamps, a Daily Wire review of government data found. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which runs the food stamp program, currently allows more than 3,700 stores with “liquor,” “beer,” “wine,” or “spirits” in their names to accept food stamps. Food stamps aren’t allowed to be used for alcohol, but they can be used for nearly anything edible, so the stores are allowed to accept them on the idea that someone might want to buy snacks, such as a bag of chips, at the liquor store. Such stores are highly unlikely to sell much healthy food, and the snacks they sell are likely ultra-processed junk food sold in small quantities at a very high markup. The findings highlight how the$113 billion Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) often contributes to making people less healthy. Democrat and Republican governors alike have signaled support for reforming SNAP to block junk food in order to deal with persistent problems regarding health — or, as Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders put it, “Make America Healthy Again.” Junk food and soda are permitted expenditures with SNAP, and soda is the number one most-purchased item. While alcohol and tobacco aren’t, the USDA essentially has to rely on store owners’ honesty when reporting what was actually rung up. Selling ineligible products, or trading food stamps for cash, is unlikely to happen at major grocery chains, but far more likely to happen at inner-city liquor stores. The stores include Bottles Liquor in Oakland, whose windows advertise luxury alcohols like Patron. Or a store in Detroit with a sign that simply says LIQUOR, where signs advertise various beers, lottery machines, and the fact that people can access Bitcoin, a favorite for illicit transactions, there. Residents of Antioch, Tennessee who want to use a taxpayer-funded nutrition program at a store dedicated to harming both livers and lungs can check out Antioch Tobacco & Beer, where signs advertise Bud Light, Sonoma Cigarettes, Rockstar energy drinks, and the fact that EBT — the debit card that holds food stamps — is accepted. The federal government has ensured that SNAP can be spent at thousands of stores whose names contain “tobacco,” “smoke,” “cigar,” or “vape.” Those enjoying Reno, Nevada’s vices can spend their government benefits at Stay High Liquor & Smoke. Phoenix residents who anticipate that after buying a blunt wrap, they might want a bag of Funyuns can check out “Cell Repair – Smoke & Vape Shop,” where you can buy cannabis products and where the “EBT SNAP CARDS ACCEPTED HERE” sign is larger than the name of the store itself. Tobacco Depot in Stockton, California focuses its advertising on the fact that you can buy both cigarettes and glass pipes used for drugs, as well as that the store does “accept E.B.T.” In Huntington, Indiana, I Puff Discount Tobacco contains a marijuana leaf in its window and accepts EBT, perhaps for those who want to pick up a Mountain Dew if whatever they’re smoking dries out their mouth. On top of the 5,000 liquor and smoke shops, welfare beneficiaries — who are more likely than the general population to be obese — can spend their taxpayer-funded nutrition dollars at candy stores, like Angie’s Candy Store in Milwaukee. Nearly 200 firms with “liquor” in the name have been found to have defrauded the food stamp program in recent years. Crain’s Ice Cream & Liquor took food stamps, until the government was surprised to learn that it wasn’t a bona fide source of nutrition, instead finding “irregular transactions” of hundreds of dollars making “the case of trafficking… convincing.” Its receipts did not even indicate whether the items purchased were food or not. Since 2017, 51 stores with the name “tobacco” in their name have been found to have committed fraud, according to USDA data. For example, inspectors visited Amigos Tobacco Shop in Greenville, North Carolina three times, and all three times they observed food stamps being accepted for non-food items, presumably tobacco, by multiple clerks. The store was barred from accepting food stamps for six months, although the punishment was postponed because the store owner appealed, complaining that SNAP was “very important” to his tobacco store’s income stream. T&J Cell & Tobacco in Milwaukee was authorized to take food stamps even though there are more than 90 stores within a two-mile radius, including supermarkets, that sell wide selections of food and accept the benefit. USDA investigators found that it was ringing up unusually high-dollar transactions, even though it offered “mainly snacks foods and beverages.” It banned the store for “trafficking” food stamps, which is when a clerk rings up fake products and gives half the amount to the customer in cash. When inspectors visited Manchester Tobacco Outlet in Manchester, Tennessee, it didn’t even have a selection of staple foods for sale, which the owner said was because “we ran out of goods.” Os Pipe & Tobacco of Denver was eligible to accept food stamps, until the government realized its owner was a convicted drug dealer. Liquor Beer & Tobacco Outlet in Charles City, Iowa, was allowed to accept food stamps. Investigators found it was ringing up high-dollar transactions even though it only sold small items like snacks and didn’t even have shopping baskets, leading them to conclude that it was simply laundering food stamps for cash. “It is not plausible that the firm’s customers would carry large amount of merchandise around the store without the benefit of shopping carts or baskets or that customers would routinely do the bulk of their grocery purchases at a moderately-stocked convenience store rather than a nearby superstore or supermarket with significantly more inventory and lower prices,” investigators wrote. On December 6, The Daily Wire laid out the case for how SNAP could be replaced by a system that purchased healthy food in bulk from farmers, and sent them to needy people upon request. That could save money not just on SNAP itself, but on the Medicaid costs associated with obesity. On Wednesday, Gov. Sanders wrote to Robert F. Kennedy, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary, and Brooke Rollins, his Agriculture nominee, that reforming SNAP could be part of the Make America Healthy Again agenda. “Unfortunately, this ‘Nutrition Assistance’ program is undermining the health of millions of Americans, on the taxpayer’s dime, by encouraging families to eat highly processed, unhealthy junk food,” Sanders wrote. She said soda, unhealthy snacks, and candy make up a large portion of SNAP purchases, which is harming her state, where 40% of residents are obese and one-third have diabetes or pre-diabetes. She noted that a Stanford study by Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Trump’s pick to lead the National Institutes of Health, “estimated that prohibiting sugary drinks and soda from SNAP would prevent obesity in 141,000 kids and Type 2 diabetes in 240,000 adults. Since joint state and federal healthcare spending is quickly approaching $2 trillion each year, we should embrace commonsense, preventative healthcare policies.” Sanders also said shifting the program to healthy, homegrown food would also support farmers, and said she would seek a waiver from SNAP to steer the program towards healthy foods in her state. In previous administrations, the federal government has refused to give states waivers blocking junk food, including New York, which wanted to ban soda. On X, Jared Polis, the Democrat governor of Colorado, echoed his support, saying, “Prioritizing healthy, fresh foods over junk food and soda will reduce the risk of having future health issues such as diabetes and cavities.”

“Day In The Life Of An Avalanche Dog In Training”

Luma Randolph is a ski patroller in Idaho. Her job is to assist skiers, including providing first aid, manual medical transport down snowy mountains, and rescuing people caught in avalanches. The ski patrol is the first responders on the mountain, and their job requires extensive training (Luma explains that here). Patrol members also work with and provide training for avalanche rescue dogs. @luma.randolph Avy dog millie’s first day back on the hill this season! #ski #skitok #skipatrol #dogsoftiktok #avalanchedog #avydog ♬ original sound – Nash the Golden Retriever Avalanche dog training begins when a dog is a puppy. Most dogs start with basic obedience training, which trains them to remain focused and cements the bond between the dog and its handler/owner. Training them for service as an avalanche rescue involves familiarizing the dogs with the terrain. They need to be acclimated to the routine day-to-day operations of a ski resort and patrol duties. When a dog is comfortable in the routine, other training, such as scent training, will be introduced. Avalanche search dogs are trained in a controlled setting to detect carbon monoxide and human skin cells. Training for a search dog is an ongoing process. During summer, dogs work on agility, scent recognition, and topographical awareness. @luma.randolph Good dog club #dogsoftiktok #dogtraining #avalanchedog #rescuedog #fyp #labradorretriever #labpointermix ♬ original sound – Luma Avalanche dog training includes specific scenario training for avalanche conditions. The dogs work to differentiate human scents from other odors that might be prevalent. The dogs will learn to work in all snow environments, from fresh powder to icy, packed snow. Handlers must also train to communicate with their dogs. This allows them to interpret signals the dog gives during rescue operations. During the winter months, dogs and handlers perform training in simulated avalanche scenario training. Practicing in realistic settings ensures their readiness when needed for real rescue missions. Avalanche Dog Training Certification Although not required everywhere, the American Avalanche Association or the National Search Dog Alliance offer certificate programs. To achieve certification, search dogs must complete specific testing. This practical testing simulates avalanche conditions to judge how the dog responds in realistic situations. Luma got Millie as a puppy and began the training process early. Now, Millie accompanies Luma on the mountain every day. She can’t talk or ski, but Millie is integral to the ski patrol team. @luma.randolph Big day for little Millie pup!! #skipatrol #skitok #avalanchedog #rescuedog #searchdog #dogsoftiktok ♬ Spirit in the Sky – Norman Greenbaum If you want to learn more about Luma and Millie, you can follow the duo on TikTok. They have adventures on and off the slopes. Luma shares some of the continuous training as she works with Millie to hone the dog’s skills. Avalanche search dogs may also function as search dogs in other situations, such as landslides or collapsed buildings. Their unique training on varying terrains allows them to transition easily into other rescue scenarios. You can find the source of this story’s featured image here. Self-Aware Hiker Has “No Idea” Why Her Excursions Take So Long

One woman has been noticing that every time she goes for a hike, it ends up taking her a surprisingly long time to reach the end of the trail. What’s been causing these mysterious delays? Well, a little soul-searching led this inadvertent lollygagger to the reason behind her conundrum. She revealed the answer in a hilariously relatable post online! Known as @pepper.steps on social media, this hiker absolutely loves documenting her excursions along various nature trails. In fact, she’s realized that she might be spending more time taking pictures and videos than actually walking! @pepper.steps “yea alltrails said 10 more minutes but it took me an hour!” meanwhile, every 5 paces i have to stop and take a pic of some moss or a nice looking tree… have you taken any cool pictures on the trail recently?! What’s your fave?? please tell me i’m not the only one who does this?! i literally have over ten thousand photos and videos on my phone currently (yikes) and i SWEAR, over half of them are different angles on a nice looking log, or a rock i thought looked funny. there’s this one trail i run often on that has a root sticking out of the ground that LITERALLY looks just like a little mouse scurrying into a little hidey hole. and the first couple of times I saw it it scared the crap out of me (lol), but eventually i knew the EXACT spot on the trail where the root was and so I was prepared with my phone to snap a quick picture of it while running without having to backtrack. #hiking #hike #hyoh #trails #happytrails #trailrunning #hiker #backpacking #backpacker #outdoors #nature #ecology #hikingtips #hiking101 #hiker101 #trees #camping #nature #wildlife #conservation #wildlifeprotection #photography #naturephotography #takeonlypictures #naturepics #outdoorsphotography #photography ♬ origineel geluid – .⋆୨୧⋆. In her clip, Pepper poked fun at her tendency to take pictures of every cool thing she sees during a hike. “I have no idea why my hikes always take so long,” she joked. This woman was also curious to know if other hikers ran into the same problem. In her caption, she asked commenters to weigh in. “Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this?!” Pepper wrote. “I literally have over ten thousand photos and videos on my phone currently (yikes) and I SWEAR, over half of them are different angles on a nice looking log, or a rock I thought looked funny.” Screengrab from TikTok Apparently, plenty of people could relate to Pepper’s situation. “Honestly me,” replied one user. “I’ll spend 20 minutes taking pictures of cool mushrooms trying to get the right angle.” Another added, “My camera roll has nine million pictures of moss.” It’s worth pointing out that there’s nothing wrong with snapping photos during a hike, even if it takes a long time. At the end of the day, hiking is supposed to be fun! As long as you’re not hurting anyone else, you should be able to enjoy this activity in whatever way you want. Whiskey Resurgence in the Heart of the Rebellion

LATROBE, Pennsylvania—The making of whiskey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, has often been fraught with a fair amount of drama. Whether it was those trying to make it or those trying to drink it, the government has sought to tax and sometimes even ban both activities. Two hundred thirty years ago, William Findley, a Revolutionary War hero, farmer, and statesman, drew the wrath of Alexander Hamilton over the severe measures the Treasury Department placed on Pennsylvania farmers who opposed the newly enacted federal whiskey excise tax. Findley, who lived in Latrobe, petitioned the new government to repeal the 1791 whiskey tax, hoping to avoid violence against those charged with collecting it from farmers. By November 1794, things had escalated to the point that then-President George Washington mustered troops and marched them to Pennsylvania to put down the rebellion. Findley went to meet with the commander in chief in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to persuade him to disband the federal forces. Eventually, Washington did, but not before imprisoning some of the farmers and letting them languish in carved-out jail cells without charges for weeks. Over 120 years later, on Latrobe’s Main Street, where Findley once lived, 350 cases of confiscated whiskey were loaded on three trucks outside an eatery. The trucks were heavily guarded so the officers hauling the whiskey from Indiana, Pennsylvania, to Pittsburgh could grab a quick lunch. It was 11 months into Prohibition, and the contraband was being transported by Pennsylvania State Police to a “secure” warehouse in the city. While the contraband sat guarded on Main Street, it attracted a crowd of onlookers eager to see the bootlegger’s bounty. The incident caused such a commotion that it made the front page of the local newspaper. It was this very boisterous, historic and often dangerous aura that inspired four young western Pennsylvania couples to open their own distilleries and tap rooms in Latrobe. The couples come from various backgrounds, including steelworkers, a military veteran, a finance expert and a former bartender. They are all outside-the-box visionaries whose love of history and drinking led them to the world of distilling whiskey. Sarah and Noah Henson, Kris and Brook Brewer, and Ryan and Kelly Shoplik were all sitting at the bar of their new taproom, Rusty Musket Distilling, in downtown Latrobe. Hanging on the wall to the left of the bar is the Whiskey Rebellion flag. Kris Brewer, a Marine veteran, said the musket half of the distillery’s name came from the roots of the Whiskey Rebellion in the area. “And the rust comes from the three of us working in the steel industry,” he said, pointing to himself, Ryan Shoplik, and Noah Henson. Kris Brewer explained that the flag was designed to embody the determination of the early American farmers as they tried to navigate the governance of a new nation that was impeding their prosperity with an excise tax. Hailing from Pennsylvania farmers, he explained that whiskey was a central commodity. “Among farmers and fur traders and small businesses, whiskey was treated as cash, which, of course, made it perfect for the government to tax,” Kris Brewer said. While the excise tax’s original intent was to hit the big producers, as with almost all things the government touches, it hit the little guys who depended on the whiskey bartering to support their families. The Brewer and Henson families opened the Rusty Musket distillery and taproom in nearby Somerset County, Pennsylvania, two years ago. The Shopliks came along shortly after as investors. The new taproom is located not far from Findley’s home, where the truckloads of whiskey sat guarded during Prohibition. The distillery currently offers moonshines and whiskeys and can produce over 100 bottles a week, Noah Henson said. “One of our founding principles is to keep everything local and to work within the region to support growing with other local businesses,” he said. The Rusty Musket taproom has weekly game and trivia nights, with a plan to do a “Drunk History” night in the spirit of the popular Comedy Central show that has attracted a cult following for its mixture of history, storytelling and indulging in spirits. All three couples have shed their corporate jobs and city lives for the entrepreneurial risk that drives so many Americans to start small businesses in this country. According to the Small Business Association, there are over 33 million small businesses in this country that employ over 60 million Americans. “We felt we wanted to be part of those risk-takers who employ most of the people in this country,” said Noah Henson. The American whiskey industry is in the middle of a bit of a correction. Before Prohibition, there were approximately 3,000 operational whiskey distilleries in the country. Of those, only six in the entire nation were granted licenses to continue distillation “for medicinal purposes,” of which less than a dozen are still in existence. The whiskey resurgence didn’t really start until the beginning of this century when the number went from 13 to 49. However, from 2000 to 2022, according to data compiled by the Whisky Aardvark, the whole industry has since surged, and today, there are roughly 1,015 new whiskey-producing distilleries in operation, including Rusty Musket Distilling. “We wanted to be part of something that we built ourselves, something intertwined with history and using the resources around us to make it, as well as using some creativity,” explained Brook Brewer. Kris Brewer added, “That is the true American spirit, isn’t it? To create something and build a community around it, and that is what we are doing here.” COPYRIGHT 2024 CREATORS.COM We publish a variety of perspectives. Funko’s Brand Tool Blamed as Itch.io Battles Bogus Report

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Itch.io went down on Monday due to what those behind the indie games site say was a bogus phishing claim reported by Funko, a pop culture collectibles company. “Trash ‘AI-powered’ software” is how Itch.io describes BrandShield, which Funko uses, and which generated the false report submitted to the store’s registrar (iWantMyName), resulting in the domain takedown. BrandShield markets itself as an “AI-powered” service that protects brands from phishing, fraud, counterfeit products, trademark infringements, and other threats. The problem with Itch.io availability was fixed the same day, but it remained unclear where exactly in the chain of events things went wrong; the indie games store said that the registrar “ignored” their response to what they consider a fake report, and instead disabled the domain. A lot of “automation” seems to be involved, both on the side of the “brand protection” firm and the registrar, showcasing once again how error-prone such systems can be, costing sites time and money. As the phishing report originated from BrandShield, it would seem the problem started with the company, however, it claims that it asked for just one allegedly infringing URL to be taken down, rather than the whole domain – and blamed “service providers” for that. BrandShield CEO Yoav Keren reacted to the incident by saying that the “AI-driven” platform is detecting and analyzing threats, while decisions on what to do with that information then depend on a team of “cybersecurity threat hunters” and IP lawyers. “We encourage platforms to implement stronger self-regulation systems that prevent such issues from occurring,” Keren is quoted as stating. Meanwhile, media reports used this as another opportunity to mention Bluesky, a social media platform that has recently been getting a lot of publicity. One of the consequences of the Itch.io domain disruption was that the games marketplace customers eligible to use their profile URL for their Bluesky account had to wait until the domain was up again for that functionality to be restored. It’s unclear what, if any connection there is between the fact that Itch.io only recently started offering this feature to everyone spending at least $10, and the domain trouble. But, Bluesky nevertheless got “a little mention” in some reports about the incident. If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Five Eyes Urges Broader Censorship Under “Protect the Children” Campaign

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. A network facilitating spy agencies’ intelligence-sharing between the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, known as Five Eyes, has its sights set on encryption, and proceeding from that, also online anonymity. Even more online censorship would also not be a bad idea – these are some of the highlights from the first public-facing paper the organizations behind this group have published. We obtained a copy of the paper for you here. And Five Eyes is not above promoting its ultimate and much more far-reaching goals by using the good old “think of the children” – the paper’s title is, Young People and Violent Extremism: A Call for Collective Action. Both it and an accompanying press release choose to consider online encryption as merely a tool used by criminals. At the same time, the paper is ignoring the fact that the entire internet ecosystem, from communications to banking and everything in between, requires strong encryption both for privacy, and security. But, Five Eyes focuses only on communications, which they vaguely refer to as online environments, and ones that can allow sex offenders access to children, they also mention extremists, and equally vaguely, “other” malign actors. Since encrypted platforms provide anonymity, the spies from the five countries (who refer to the state of affairs as, “a large degree of anonymity”) don’t like that either – and again link it to negative scenarios, such as “radicalization to violence.” The paper is not specific on the exact mechanisms that would ramp up online censorship, but mentions both governments and the tech industry; the first category should “strengthen legislative support for law enforcement,” while the other is urged to “take greater responsibility for the harm done on their platforms.” Gaming platforms Discord, Instagram, Roblox as well as TikTok are singled out as “seemingly innocuous” – but the way Five Eyes sees it, they make violent extremism content “more accessible.” The “whole-of-society response” is the proposed solution to the problem of radicalization of minors in these countries. And the documents vow the alliance will continue working with “government agencies, the education sector, mental health and social well-being services, communities and technology companies.” “It is important to work together early as once law enforcement and security agencies need to become involved, it is often too late,” the paper warns. And so, a network whose members are likely, in one capacity or another, behind many of the existing attacks on online encryption and anonymity – has now come out as the campaign’s supposedly “latest recruit.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net.
