The famed Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France, sustained tremendous damage after a devastating fire in April 2019. The cathedral’s wooden roof was engulfed in flames, and it took more than nine hours to fight the blaze. Miraculously, the cathedral’s famed rose windows remained intact among other Catholic artifacts. It took several years to reconstruct the cathedral to its former glory, but according to French President Emmanuel Macron, it’s nearly ready to reopen to the public, NBC News reported. He thanked all those who helped make this epic transformation possible. “This project was a human adventure of epic proportions in terms of building and prowess, involving the patient and dedicated work of a chain of talents working with one another, passing the torch to those of the centuries to come,” he wrote. When the blaze occurred, Macron promised the French people he would reopen the cathedral by 2024. Many doubted the possibility of finishing such a project on a tight timeline, but the president accomplished his mission. “It was a challenge many deemed impossible, yet one we will have met on,” Macron said in his essay. “This once-in-a-century project has been conducted in extraordinary conditions. It required a collaboration of France’s best experts and specialists.” Louise Bausiere, who worked on the restoration team, told NBC News restoring Notre Dame Cathedral precisely as it was has remained the top priority. “To make it in five years was hard. We had to do it. There was no choice,” Louise said. According to NBC, on the first day after the fire, they raised nearly $1 billion in pledged donations to help restore the cathedral.
