Billy Strings Covers Doc Watson’s “A-Roving On A Winter’s Night”

Billy Strings Covers Doc Watson’s “A-Roving On A Winter’s Night”

Jamming out in the studio. It might be the holiday season, but Billy Strings does not look like he's taking a break from working. While many artists are wrapping up tours and studio time for the year to wind down and take some time off until 2025, Billy Strings appears to be doing the opposite. Strings, who recently became a father, just shared a video of him laying down a classic in the recording booth. Billy Strings is kicking off this holiday season by sharing a cover of Doc Watson's "A-Roving On A Winter's Night." But don't let the title fool you; this song is far from the holiday anthem the title might imply; it's a cold, heartbreak ballad. On the Doc Watson record, The Vanguard Years, Watson says in the intro of "A-Roving On A Winter's Night" that it's one of his favorite songs. "If I had to pick a favorite love song from the songs that I've learned from the old time records and the relatives... I guess it would have to be one called "A-Roving On A Winter's Night.'"  The song is loving as the narrator thinks about his times with a woman he cherished. But it's also heartbreaking as the narrator looks back on these memories because the relationship is no longer alive, and he's left with a heart to mend. In the first verse, the former lover compares how highly he thought of this woman to some of the most beautiful things in the world, like flowers or the beauty of France. In the second verse, he wonders who still cares for her and gives her the love she deserves if it is not him. He longs for this woman to return to his life, but he knows the time has passed. "Who's a-gonna glove your little hands? Who's a-gonna kiss your sweet little lips, Honey, who's a-gonna be your man? I love you till the sea runs dry, And the rocks all melt in the sun. I love you till the day I die, Though you will never be my own. A-rovin' on a winter's night And a-drinkin' good old wine, Thinkin' about that pretty little girl, That broke this heart of mine..." Over the years, many artists have covered the Doc Watson classic. While many stellar versions are out there, Billy Strings' take on this classic tune is worthy of a chef's kiss. He delicately picks his acoustic and delivers the lyrics in a way that sounds almost like a lullaby. It's the most soothing delivery of a heartbreak ballad I've ever heard. This is one of those videos where you need to turn it up, close your eyes, and enjoy it. It scratches your brain in all the right places, and I think you'll quickly find it on repeat. Check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzMIo65urys Billy also recently stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a performance of "Seven Weeks In County, a fan favorite from his critically-acclaimed new studio album Highway Prayers. Braxton Keith Releases New Honky Tonk Heartbreaker, “Chase You Down”

Braxton Keith is bringing the jukebox-sounding honky tonk heartbreakers back. If you're a fan of the sound Zach Top is reviving, bringing back '90s country, then you also need to listen to Braxton Keith. The twenty-something-year-old Texas native calls San Antonio home, but you'll have trouble finding him there. As Keith has blown up on the Red Dirt and Texas country scene, he's embracing a true road dog spirit and is constantly on the road touring. Keith went viral earlier this year on TikTok for his single "Cozy," which is a stone-cold cheating song. "I'm trying to bring back the traditional values of old-school country music, with a modern twist." Since "Cozy" turned many heads towards Keith, he is letting fans know he's more than a one-hit wonder and is releasing heater after heater. This week, he dropped a new single that is heartbreaking gold: "Chase You Down." https://www.instagram.com/p/DC0J1DORNdi/?img_index=1 The single, penned by Keith and Deric Ruttan, highlights a man drinking through the pain of his heartbreak. However, the man keeps hurting himself, with memories surfacing the more he keeps drinking. It's a double-edged sword as he tries to numb his pain with the bottle, but the bottle won't let him truly move on because he will always "chase you down." The play on words with the title is perfect as it relates to chasing the shots down and trying to chase down those memories that keep him from moving on. "Saw your bags packed by the door Then I helped load 'em in that '99 Ford Tears were streaming from your eyes When you turned around and whispered goodbye I could've put my truck and drive Caught up with you and changed your mind But as long as Kentucky's makin' bourbon Jack is back in ole Tennessee You ain't too far gone If there's Cuervo down in Dallas Waitin' on a broken heart like me I watched those goodbye taillights Fadin' on outta town, But as long as there's a bottle of something somewhere around I can always chase you down..." Keith's thick twangs hit home, and his vocal delivery conveys the feeling of heartbreak so well. The gut-wrenching lyrics combined with the moan of the steel guitar make this single a perfect sad country song. If sad county songs make you happy, blast this one at full volume. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtxUuMVUBfc

Wyatt Flores Highlights Songs From ‘Welcome To The Plains’ With New ‘Tiny Desk Concert’

Just what the doctor ordered to fire up this Thanksgiving weekend. If your family is anything like mine, you love listening to live music while cooking over Thanksgiving. Until football starts, we have music or live concerts playing throughout the house. And if you're also like me, you're constantly turning your folks onto new artists. Wyatt Flores is one of those names I've talked about while cooking, and his recently released NPR Tiny Desk concert is the perfect thing to fire up to showcase his talent to those in your home. The Oklahoma native recently released his debut record, Welcome To The Plains. On it, he sings about the Red Dirt state he calls home and how the landscape has changed over the years, from settlers first finding shelter there to how it's personally changed for him. During his Tiny Desk Concert, Flores highlighted four stellar tracks from that record in the small studio. While there is no denying that Flores has had a whirlwind year playing some of his biggest shows to date and growing his following rapidly, he noted that stepping into the NPR studio for his Tiny Desk setting was one of the more never racking things he's done in his career thus far. "There’s been so many unbelievable things that we’ve accomplished together but this was one was so special. To be invited to play at tiny desk is a huge honor and stand in the same space with so many other amazing artists and bands I was freaking out. The night before we played I couldn’t sleep the whole night I was trying to grasp the fact more dreams were coming true and hoping I wouldn’t mess anything up which I did! I am incredibly grateful for all the amazing places our fans have brought us and opened up doors for us to keep moving up! Thank you to my band who has worked so hard to bring these songs to life and for their constant hard work to keep pushing through. My heart is full folks I’m still not sure what I did to deserve all this but it’s not taken for granted. Thanks for believing in some Oklahoma kid and putting him here where I am today love y’all." Flores opened up his set with the title single off the record, keeping the energy high during the first performance before lowering it for his second song, "When I Die." During the second portion of his set, he performed two singles he released leading up to the record's drop, "Little Town," before closing it out with the emotional song "Oh Susannah." Before diving into "Oh Susannah," Flores shared the emotional story that inspired this song: his fanbase. Before releasing the single, he shared it with a Grand Ole Opry audience, noting that he felt like he could not help his fans enough, eventually leading to his mental health decline. "If you have heard my music, you know I talk a whole lot about mental health. It's just one of those things where I was just telling my story, and it led from one thing to the next. Now, I'm just telling a different chapter of where I'm at on everything. I had to take a step back earlier this winter, and I'm glad I did. And I'm still learning because I've never toured harder in my life and I never realized how hard this would be. But I'm also learning boundaries, and I had no idea what co-dependent meant. Yeah...I had to take a step back because I was giving too much of everything when I wasn't asked to be... This song is about my fan base, 'Oh Susannah' is my fanbase, and I wrote it for my fans. It's my favorite song that I currently have." With that, he dives into the last song of his set, knocking it out of the park. If you're looking for a stellar live performance to watch without having to set aside an hour for a live concert, fire up Wyatt Flores' Tiny Desk Concert. It's well worth the twenty-ish minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88mdzNcOHj4
