Cody Johnson Says He Gets To Use The “Frank Sinatra” Side Of His Voice For CMA Christmas Special

Get ready for a Cody Johnson country Christmas. Just like the bites of turkey and dressing I take during Thanksgiving and Christmas, that first line was a bit of a mouthful. I apologize. But I was just trying to get you fired up for a holiday season full of country music Christmas music - specifically from CoJo. He's not the only one that's getting into the Christmas mood this year. You've got Megan Moroney's Christmas EP Blue Christmas… Duh, Riley Green's new song “Christmas To Me”, and in case you missed it, Toby Keith’s iconic performance of the Roger Miller classic “Little Toy Trains” was remastered and rereleased on an updated version of Christmas to Christmas - which was originally released in 1995 but has long been out of print and unavailable on streaming services until this year. If the Christmas projects from this year don't tickle your fancy, we’ve fortunately got a multitude of existing country Christmas options out that are certain to get you into the holiday spirit. You've got A Cody Johnson Christmas, Carrie Underwood’s My Gift, and don't forget Koe Wetzel's Koe Wetzel Presents… Wetzel’s Wonderland. Fortunately for you, we've got the best of the best all gathered on Whiskey Riff’s Country Christmas Songs That Don’t Suck playlist. Make sure to check it out. Another thing to look forward to as the holiday season rolls on is the "CMA Country Christmas" special, which is set to air on ABC on December 3rd. Cody Johnson will perform, as will the likes of Ashley McBryde, Jon Pardi, Amy Grant, and Trisha Yearwood, among other country artists. Out of all the performances, I'm most intrigued by CoJo, only because of what the "Dirt Cheap" singer teased for fans that plan on tuning into the show: "I get to show a little bit more of a Frank Sinatra (and) Dean Martin side of myself that you don’t normally see when you come to one of my live shows." Cody Johnson? More like CROONER Johnson! When you think back on some of Cody's slower songs like "Human" and "I Always Wanted To," you can hear hints here and there of that voice he's alluding to. I'm certainly excited to hear a full-blown crooner version of CoJo though, and it sounds like Johnson himself is too. Cody explained how his energy during live performances tends to be on the excited side, and that his Christmas performances and songs were hand selected to show off his b-side - if you will: "In my live shows, I try to be very electric, jumping off of risers and keeping the crowd right here in the palm of my hand. But with these songs, the reason why I chose ‘White Christmas’ and ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ is to kind of show off a little bit (of a) different side of my voice that you wouldn’t normally hear." So go ahead and put Cody Johnson's CMA Country Christmas performance in your calendar. I know I'm going to, and you can hear more about the ABC special from show hosts Trisha Yearwood and Amy Grant below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykDSee95KiM
