Apple partners with leading chumbox provider to sell ads

A chumbox pictured at the bottom of a story. | Screenshot: The Verge Taboola, one of the biggest providers of chumbox ads on the internet, has a deal to sell ads that will show in Apple’s News and Stocks apps, Axios reports. Apple lists Taboola as one of its “Authorised advertising resellers” whose ads appear in the apps’ feeds and “select publisher articles” for users in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. The deal doesn’t mean Apple News will soon be littered with chumboxes — those ad boxes formatted to look like news stories that you see at the bottom of articles (including at The Verge) with low-rent, often ridiculous clickbait headlines. Taboola makes those, and they apparently do quite well. But it also sells “native” ads, which are meant to blend in with surrounding content, from “a curated set of... Continue reading…

Google is ending an experiment that let you annotate search results

Image: Google Google is ending a months-old experiment that let people attach colorful notes to search results, the company confirmed to 9to5Google. Google announced the Notes experiment for Search Labs in November. If you had opted in to Notes, you could see and add annotations featuring text and images to links in search results in the Google app. (They were kind of a Google-y take on X’s Community Notes.) But given Tuesday’s announcement, it seems the test wasn’t popular enough to warrant a wider release. “Search Labs is our testbed for bold experimentation and as we’ve shared, not all experiments will launch broadly,” a Google spokesperson told 9to5Google. “We’ve seen in our research that people want to hear from others like them and Notes was an... iOS 17.6 beta 4 now available as official release nears

Apple has just released the fourth testing version of iOS 17.6. This update comes a day after Apple released iOS 18 public beta to users. That said, this is one of the less exciting updates for the iOS 17 cycle, mainly because all supported iPhones will get iOS 18, which is set to be released later this fall. For now, attention is turning to the imminent release of Apple Intelligence. Expected to be available in beta for iPhone 15 Pro, Apple is adding several AI features for its devices, including: Writing Tools: Users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps; Image Playground: Users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. This app is built right into apps like Messages and is also available in a dedicated app; Memories in Photos: Users can create stories they want to see just by typing a description. Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description, craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos, and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc; Clean Up tool: This Photos app feature can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo without accidentally altering the subject That said, iOS 17.6 beta 4 is more about what Apple could add than what’s already there. According to YouTuber zollotech, Apple plans to bring Lost Mode to Apple Pencil Pro on the Find My app. Besides that, it seems Apple will also let users remove their devices from Repair Mode through the Find My app. At this moment, you can’t do that. For Apple News+, Apple is working on Live Activity support for Home Screen and Lock Screen, so you can keep following games and other factual stories happening at that moment. iOS 17.6 beta 4 is also bringing a new Messages app setting that lets you filter unknown senders if they’re an international sender. Right now, iOS 17.6 looks like a small update. Unfortunately,iOS 17.5 was also no different, as it brought only a few enhancements: Pride wallpapers: To celebrate Pride 2024, Apple brings “bold, symbolic color to Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad. Signaling hope, strength, and fellowship to LGBTQ+ communities, the beams of light glow against a dark background and stack on top of each other to represent the everlasting impact of LGBTQ+ activism and its role in illuminating the path to greater equality for future generations.” Podcasts widget change: The Podcasts widget has a new dynamic color that changes depending on what you’re listening to. Tracking Notifications: Cross-platform tracking detection delivers notifications to users if a compatible Bluetooth tracker they do not own is moving with them, regardless of what operating system the device is paired with. Alongside iOS 17.6 beta 4, Apple is also releasing the fourth testing versions of iPadOS 17.6, watchOS 10.6, macOS 14.6, tvOS 17.6, and visionOS 1.3. We’ll let you know if we find anything new in this beta cycle. Apple gives you one main reason to use Safari in new ad

Apple gives you one main reason to use Safari in new ad

In a new global ad campaign, Apple is highlighting the privacy features of the Safari browser. While Google Chrome is the most popular browser, Apple wants to ensure users of its ecosystem are aware of the benefits of its built-in solution. In this almost two-minute ad, Apple shows pesky birds and bats transformed into security cameras. They hover around smartphone users while they browse the web on their Android smartphones. People try to avoid this surveillance at all costs by running, shouting, or hiding their phones. However, the only way to actually protect themselves from this plague is solved by an iPhone user when they open Safari, and these cameras explode in mid-air. The ad ends with Apple’s slogan: “Privacy. That’s iPhone.” Besides this ad campaign, Apple is making sure to display its privacy push with Safari through billboards in major cities around the world and short digital ads. https://youtu.be/0HjDpPnxcP0?si=f7zA-GIFAqQnsl4Z How Safari is more private than Chrome, and how to protect yourself Alongside this campaign, Apple has published on its WebKit blog privacy updates made to Safari to make it more secure to users. There are five pillars on how Safari takes your information more seriously, and why you should ditch Google Chrome on your Apple devices. For example, Safari prevents cross-site tracking thanks to its intelligent tracking prevention, which immediately makes it harder for trackers to fingerprint your browsing usage. Fingerprinting is a way to track you even if Apple blocks third-party cookies and other data. With ITP, Apple hides your IP address from trackers. Every time it notices someone is trying to create an ad profile of you, Apple removes that data to make your browsing experience randomized instead of giving a clear signal of who you are. Image source: Apple Inc. ITP is turned on by default, and Safari also helps protect your location. It doesn't automatically use your location in search engines, and you can choose when to share it—and for how long. Another way to improve that experience is by switching from Google's built-in option in Safari to DuckDuckGo, for example. Apple also commits itself to helping users decide when web extensions can access their data by only working on specific websites or periods. Lastly, Apple says it cares about your private browsing experience by protecting your browsing history, offering Face ID protection to lock the app during Private Mode, and adding link tracking protection to remove trackers from a URL. Safari is available only on Apple devices, and if you're like me, and have ditched the browser for another option a few years ago, maybe it should be the perfect moment to give it another try.
