The story of how Van Halen finally got their record deal

Van Halen was formed in Pasadena, California back in 1972 by the brothers Alex and Eddie Van Halen and two years later they were joined by the vocalist David Lee Roth and the bassist Michael Anthony. That line-up played constantly in the area where they lived and built a big fan base. One night the Kiss bassist and singer Gene Simmons was in a club they were playing and was really impressed by the group. He then took them to New York to record a demo at the Electric Lady Studios but that still wasn't enough to get them a record deal.  In an interview with Steven Rosen back in 1979, Eddie Van Halen how they finally got their record deal with Warner Brothers. The story of how Van Halen finally got their record deal During the interview, Eddie explained that the demo made with the help of Gene Simmons was never used because they didn't know where they should take it.  "(...) Bands take it to a record company, and there will be some clown sittin’ on a couch, smokin’ a joint, listens to your tape, and nothing will ever happen that way." What we basically did is we just kept playing the LA area everywhere." "We used to put on our own shows at the Pasadena Civic, our home town, and draw like three thousand people on a four-dollar ticket. This was way before [the deal with] Warner Brothers. So we just developed such a following that a sister of a friend at the record company heard about us and the word got around about the band." "Finally, Ted Templeman and [Warner Bros president] Mo Ostin came down to the Starwood in Hollywood, which was really always just kind of a bad place for us because we weren’t a Hollywood band. Pasadena is really where we’re from, and that’s like San Bernardino – that’s like Bumfuck, Iowa. That’s what people are like out in Hollywood." He continued: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5txwFv-zYM&pp=ygUWcnVubmluZyB3aXRoIHRoZSBkZWl2bA%3D%3D "It really tripped me out, because when we were playin’ and Mo Ostin and Ted Templeman walked in we really didn’t know. Somebody just said: “There’s somebody really important out there so play good.” There were no people there; it was some rainy Monday night without any people at all. And still they came backstage and they loved it. They said: “If you don’t negotiate with anyone else, you’ve got what you want right here.” "We were happy, we tripped out. Warner Brothers, man. That was always the company I wanted to be with. On top of that, we got Ted Templeman to produce the record. I talked to a lot of people and they said: “Wow, man, we’re trying to get Ted Templeman to produce our record.” He’s in demand, and here we are – we get picked up by him," Eddie Van Halen said. Van Halen finally released their self-titled groundbreaking debut album in 1978 and it was the start of a very successful career. They released 12 studio albums and 2 live albums, selling an estimated amount of more than 80 million records worldwide. The post The story of how Van Halen finally got their record deal appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

How John Deacon met Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor

How John Deacon met Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor

Queen was formed in 1970 in London, England by Brian May, Roger Taylor and Freddie Mercury. But it was in 1971 that their classic line-up was completed when the bassist John Deacon passed the audition and joined them. He was a crucial part of the band not only for his bass playing, but also for his songwriting. He was the one who wrote hits like "Another One Bites the Dust" and "I Want To Break Free", for example. Deacon was always the most quiet member of the band and rarely talked to the press over the decades. But in an interview with Music Star back in 1974 he recalled how he met his bandmates. John Deacon said about how he met Queen band members: “Personally, one of the most important times for me was when I left home to go to college in London. It wasn’t so much the event itself. But it steered me in the musical direction. I met the other lads and got more professional, having played at home in little amateur groups." "First of all I met Roger and Brian in a disco. I’d heard they were looking for a bass guitarist so I chatted to them — they’d actually been auditioning for a few weeks before. But couldn’t find anybody who seemed to fit. Freddie was already on the scene by then, so my joining was the final forming of Queen as we are now. I had a little audition and they took me on. Quite easy really!” “It was quite a moment when we decided to turn professional. We’d been playing in our spare time. But really I didn’t think, myself, that we’d ever do it even though we’d jokingly talked about it. Then we were lucky enough to be able to make a demo tape at a proper studio. When we took it round the record companies they were interested enough to give us confidence, so we gave it a go." He continued, saying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Mc-NYPHaQ&pp=ygUZaSB3YW50IHRvIGJyZWFrIGZyZWUgcXVlZQ%3D%3D “Possibly Freddie and Roger were the keenest. Brian was a big career man deeply into studying physics and astronomy and had reservations about it. But the other two are the born stars. Freddie’s probably the one who’s given us the most push to get on, and is the most insistent with people like managers and so on," John Deacon said. Deacon retired from the music business and public life in the late 90s. Since then he hasn't recorded music or played live. However, according to Brian May and Roger Taylor he still is part of Queen's business decisions. The post How John Deacon met Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

What made Jim Morrison want to become a singer

What made Jim Morrison want to become a singer

OBorn in Melbourne, Florida back in 1943, the singer Jim Morrison helped to form The Doors in 1965 alongside Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore. His career was tragically cut short at the age of 27 in 1971 but he remains as one of the most influential singer and songwriters of all time. More than a frontman, Morrison became a symbol of his generation and back in 1969 in an interview with Rolling Stone the musician recalled the moment he decided to be a singer. What made Jim Morrison want to become a singer "I think I had a suppressed desire to do something like this ever since I heard … y’see, the birth of rock and roll coincided with my adolescence, my coming into awareness. It was a real turn-on, although at the time I could never allow myself to rationally fantasize about ever doing it myself." "I guess all that time I was unconsciously accumulating inclination and listening. So when it finally happened, my subconscious had prepared the whole thing. I didn’t think about it. It was just there. I never did any singing. I never even conceived it." He continued: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgHaGrZkkv4&pp=ygUScGVvcGxlIGFyZSBzdHJhbmdl "I thought I was going to be a writer or a sociologist, maybe write plays. I never went to concerts. One or two at most. I saw a few things on TV, but I’d never been a part of it all. But I heard in my head a whole concert situation, with a band and singing and an audience — a large audience." "Those first five or six songs I wrote, I was just taking notes at a fantastic rock concert that was going on inside my head. And once I had written the songs, I had to sing them," Jim Morrison said. The Doors were the first American band to have eight consecutive gold LPs and have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, which makes them one of the best-selling groups of all time. Some of their most famous albums are “Strange Days” (1967), “The Soft Parade” (1969), “Morrison Hotel” (1970) and “L.A. Woman” (1971). The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1993 by Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam). The post What made Jim Morrison want to become a singer appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

When Gary Moore revealed his favorite songs of his career

When Gary Moore revealed his favorite songs of his career

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland back in 1952, Gary Moore started his musical career in 1968, primarily as a guitarist and then also becoming a singer. He was part of many bands until he finally achieved fame as the guitar player for Thin Lizzy. He was a member of the Irish band from 1974 to 1977 and 1978 to 1979. His first solo record was released in 1978 but it was with records like "Wild Frontier" (1987) and "Still Got The Blues" (1990) that he really went to another level of success, changing his style a little bit and becoming really a bluesman. He sadly passed away too soon back in 2011 at the age of 58 but a few years before, in 2007, in an interview with All Out Guitar he revealed his favorite songs of his career. Gary Moore said about his favorite songs of his career: "I tend to like the stuff more after 1990. I like some of the rock stuff, the Celtic influence rock stuff like ‘Over the Hills and Far Away' from ‘Wild Frontier', and ‘Blood of Emeralds' from ‘After the War'. ‘Out in the Fields' I quite liked. So I like the ones where the lyrics were about something, as opposed to the usual rock stuff." "I like ‘Still Got the Blues' very much, ‘Parisienne Walkways' and ‘Walking By Myself', ‘Pretty Woman'. And I like a lot of the new stuff off of this record because it has given me a chance to change a lot of the set, which is great." "Some of the songs were getting stale. We've been playing five or six of the new songs already and people really like them. It's funny how much they like the ones like ‘I Had A Dream' and ‘Trouble At Home'. Because the album's not even out obviously," Gary Moore said. The final Gary Moore (Which was released when he was still alive) was "Bad For You Baby", released in 2008. But in 2021 a posthumous record "How Blue Can You Get" was released. Besides being a member of Thin Lizzy he also was part of the supergroup BBM, which was formed alongside the Cream members Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IocRCDWB5k  The post When Gary Moore revealed his favorite songs of his career appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

The new Blues guitarist that Slash said he likes

Although he first achieved fame as a member of Guns N' Roses, which is a Hard Rock group, the guitarist Slash showed over the decades that he could also be a Blues guitar player, something that not every Hard Rock musician can, even though that music genre has always been deeply influenced by Blues music. He is currently promoting his new solo album "Orgy of The Damned", which has many special guests and covers classic Blues tracks. In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Slash revealed who is the new Blues guitarist that he likes. He even recalled he helped the musician to get his visa to be in the United States. Also that he booked him a concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The new Blues guitarist that Slash said he likes "There are some amazing guitar technicians out there, but it reminds me of the way that skateboarding has evolved. Everyone's so technical now. There's some really interesting and impressive stuff that's come out of it. But there's only a few guitar players who I really like these days." "There's a guy named Chris Buck, who's a really great blues guitar player. I helped him to get a visa to come here. Then I called the Troubadour to get him a gig. You see all these young blues artists really going for it and getting really f— good. That's a genre that's really thriving and alive and fresh at the moment. Whereas it's a little bit few and far between for me to find interesting things to listen to in Rock. I think what's really exciting for me is when the guitar is in context as a melodic part of a song." "That's what’s always turned me on, and there's such a lack of that going on [in rock music]. There's all these guitar players that sound amazing by themselves. But it doesn't really fit inside of a composition of an exciting band," Slash said. Chris Buck is a Welsh guitarist born back in 1991, when Slash was already one of the most successful guitarists in the world. He is also a Youtuber and is known for bands like Buck & Evans, Cardinal Black and his Youtube series "Friday Fretworks". He already had the chance to play live with Slash. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGQcQdbko1w&pp=ygUQc2xhc2ggY2hyaXMgYnVjaw%3D%3DThe post The new Blues guitarist that Slash said he likes appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
