Five fishermen die after drinking mysterious liquids from drifting bottles

Five Sri Lankan fishermen have died after drinking unknown liquids from bottles they found adrift in the sea, the South Asian nation’s navy said. A group of six fishermen had sailed from the Tangalle Fisheries Harbour on a multiday trip and found the bottles floating nearly 320 nautical miles (592.64km) off the coast of Sri Lanka. They thought the bottles contained alcohol and consumed the contents, navy spokesperson Gayan Wickramasuriya said. Four of them died shortly after drinking the liquids while another succumbed on Sunday, reports independent.co.uk. The sixth person took critically ill and was later evacuated to a Singaporean merchant vessel, MV Kota Camil, for treatment. The navy dispatched a ship, SLNS Vijayabahu, with a medical team to provide medical aid and facilitate the safe return of the survivor. Mr Wickramasuriya said necessary steps were being taken for the Singaporean vessel to transfer the fisherman to SLNS Vijayabahu at sea. The fishermen had distributed some of the bottles they found to nearby fishing trawlers, said Susantha Kahawatte, director general of the Sri Lankan Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and the authorities were trying to notify them against consuming the unknown liquids. The victims were on a multiday fishing voyage aboard a trawler called Devon 5 and had set sail on 4 June. The trawler was being towed back to shore by another vessel. Column: Late-Night Comedians Line Up with the Dump-Biden Democrats

Does anybody remember the gentle days of political humor when Johnny Carson was the King of Late Night? Today’s late-night environment is largely a nasty gang of hardened leftists (with Jimmy Fallon being the closest to the Carson model). A new Media Research Center study by Alex Christy found the political tilt of guests (with a political opinion) over a nine-month period was 137 to 8, or 94 percent liberal. That would also suggest the tone of the hosts when they have politics on the brain. In the fervid public dispute over whether Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance should cause him to quit the campaign, the comedians are not-so-subtly suggesting they are on Team Quit. “It not for me to say,” but get out. Let’s start with Jon Stewart, king of the new snarky late-night landscape. Biden told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that if he lost, he’ll know he did his “goodest” to beat Trump. Stewart shot back:¨“That is not what this is about! There are no participation trophies in ‘End-game democracy.’ Yes, I remember FDR saying, ‘Well, if the Nazis take over Europe, at least both teams had fun.” The Trump-equals-Hitler bit is a constant. Trump’s daughter converted to Judaism, and his policies were very pro-Israel. It’s pretty wild stuff from Jon Leibowitz “Stewart,” the guy who once hosted what he called a “Rally to Restore Sanity.” He failed. NBC’s Seth Meyers also offered a wild-eyed lecture on how Biden isn’t good enough. “A wildly dangerous criminal and pathological liar is leading a radical movement to dismantle American democracy and he’s within striking distance,” he said. So “it would be nice to have a Democratic candidate who could competently articulate those stakes, instead of whatever the hell this was.” Meyers couldn't handle Biden's promise to do fewer events after dark and get more rest: "If you truly believe American democracy is at stake, and it is, then you have to act like it. You can't claim to be the last bulwark against fascism and also have a ‘more sleep’ plan." On CBS, Stephen Colbert complained “Biden's shakiness allowed Trump to get away with 90 minutes of lies, racism, and weird golf brags, which is why a lot of people are saying this was the worst debate performance of all time.” In an interview with CNN host Abby Phillip, Colbert asked why there should be any debates. Naturally, the journalist thought there should be debates. Colbert shot back: “Why? You know he's going to lie and the other guy is the president of the United States, who should not be dignifying this criminal who tried to overthrow democracy and does not believe in the process.” This is today’s anti-Trump fervor. Democracy is best served when debates aren’t held. Colbert later concluded Biden is displaying a battle of two virtues, perseverance and self-sacrifice. "And self-sacrifice takes a particular kind of courage, and that is a courage I believe Joe Biden is capable of.” Keep hope alive, Steve.  Since Jimmy Kimmel took the summer off at ABC, this week's fill-in host Kathryn Hahn proclaimed: "I would vote for a skeleton over Donald Trump. In fact, I may literally be voting for a skeleton over Donald Trump.” Behind all this nastiness is sincerity. The "comedians" aren't striking a pose to play the rebel. These people really believe their own spiels about Democracy Ending if they lose. But just because they're sincere doesn't mean they don't sound like they need medication. They don't get to lecture the rest of us about having a calm grip on reality and a reasonable view on what happens next in America.

The GOP needs to stay focused on inflation, not cognition

The media just woke up and noticed the cognitive decline in Joe Biden that’s been apparent to anyone who has seen him since at least 2019. The media's sudden narrative change sheds light on how dishonest the corporate press has been on a variety of topics, the president’s mental acuity included. But this new circus is really a sideshow to what is going on in the main ring. Whoever is in charge (as I think it is a reasonable assumption that it is not the guy in steep mental decline) has set forth destructive policies that have wreaked havoc upon middle class Americans’ finances and made the country less safe.Americans cannot afford another four years of this. While it’s tempting to shift focus, the GOP must stay on track to win the presidency, Congress, and local seats. Their messaging should remain laser-focused on the following. The economy. The top issue on Americans’ minds as they head to the polls is the economy. Despite any spin, the massive double-digit, cumulative inflation under Biden has put immense pressure on the working and middle class. Americans, especially those without substantial assets, struggle to keep up with the basic cost of living.Slowing growth driven by massive deficits, a national debt approaching $35 trillion, and interest payments overtaking defense spending has created an unstable fiscal foundation and a lack of confidence in improvement. This is the top ballot issue for a reason. It needs to stay front and center, not take a back seat, because it’s not just Biden’s policy — it’s the Democrats’ policy.National security and the border. The commander in chief’s primary job is ensuring the security of the United States, including our borders. We are now amid the worst border crisis in U.S. history.Millions of illegal immigrants have effortlessly crossed into the United States under Biden’s tenure. Early in 2024, a report estimated that the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. doubled under the Biden administration. Reported terrorists have been caught entering the country, and illegal border crossers have been tied to high-profile crimes, including rape and murder. In cities across the country, illegal immigrants receive housing and other benefits, funded by Americans’ tax dollars. It needs to stop. The man in the Oval Office currently is incapable of stopping it.America’s standing in the world. The weakness of this administration goes beyond the weakness of the president. The policy and lack of gravitas throughout the administration have made the United States a laughingstock on the global stage. The administration has made decisions like giving money to Iran that emboldened and accelerated its sponsorship of terror. The administration has also weaponized the U.S. dollar, which has led to more nations dumping U.S. Treasuries and seeking to conduct international trade in other currencies.Other decisions, like pushing “green” initiatives, benefit rival nations like China instead of strengthening America’s economic foundation. There are, of course, other issues, but with limited room for messaging, staying focused on the economy, national security, and America’s overall strength is much more important than the president’s mental clarity. This administration has emboldened a terrifying set of national economic and security crises. That goes far past Biden’s personal cognitive and aging challenges. These issues need to remain front and center as Americans cannot afford another four years of this.

No, Once Human isn’t taking your passport and ID data, NetEase says

Once Human does not collect especially sensitive user data including information from government-issued IDs, publisher NetEase says, following criticisms and concerns from players in the wake of the survival game’s launch on Steam. The NetEase privacy policy, which applies also to Once Human, states that information from identification documents such as passports is collected by the game. In response, the Once Human Steam rating quickly dropped to ‘mostly negative’ owing to a large number of player responses citing apprehension about how the game handles personal data. NetEase now shares a statement clarifying its privacy policy and explaining that information from government-issued IDs is only requested in certain circumstances. AMD’s frame generation tech could soon be in loads of new games

AMD has just released its FidelityFX SDK 1.1 software suite which means game developers are now free to implement the company's latest FSR 3.1 frame rate-boosting frame generation tech into their games. While we've seen FSR 3.1 already in a handful of games, such as Ghost of Tsushima, this release now means it could soon arrive in many more. While AMD's rival for DLSS 3.0 isn't quite as capable as Nvidia's version, it still offers up a way for any entrant - AMD or Nvidia - on our best graphics card guide to provide a big performance boost via AI-generated frame generation. What's more, the most crucial addition to this latest update is that it decouples FSR 3.1 frame generation from any FSR upscaling, allowing developers to offer DLSS upscaling and FSR frame generation at the same time. That in turn means owners of older RTX graphics cards can access frame generation.
