Pennsylvania Lottery: 75-year-old Woman Wins $5 Million Scratch-off After Beating Breast Cancer

A great-grandmother in Pennsylvania recently won $5 million playing scratch lottery cards, and the timing couldn’t be better. Having just successfully beat breast cancer days before her birthday, Donna Osborne picked the winning scratch card after having to cancel a flight because of consistent delays. “I don’t know what I’d do with myself, I have […] The post Pennsylvania Lottery: 75-year-old Woman Wins $5 Million Scratch-off After Beating Breast Cancer appeared first on Good News Network.

Is Lawfare Against the Left the Only Means to Restore Norms?

The key to blocking political lawfare is more political lawfare, legal experts regretfully asserted Monday at the National Conservatism conference in Washington.   Possible targets for conservative lawfare include Attorney General Merrick Garland and Kristen Clarke, the head of his Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, they said. Since President Joe Biden’s administration, backed up by local and state prosecutors, has targeted former President Donald Trump and other conservative-leaning leaders, unilateral disarmament isn’t an option, law professor and former government lawyer John Yoo said.  “Unfortunately in warfare, the only way to get someone who refuses to obey important norms is [that] you have to retaliate,” Yoo told conferees at the Capital Hilton. “So, if we’re not going to become a banana republic, unfortunately we are going to have to use banana republic means exactly the same way by conservative or Republican DAs, until they stop.” Yoo later added that lawfare and warfare share one similar trait.  “The only way to encourage good behavior and return to norms is deterrence,” Yoo said.  John Eastman, a lawyer and senior fellow with the Claremont Institute, talked about his own situation of facing criminal charges and disbarment in California as Trump’s lawyer during the disputed aftermath of the 2020 election pitting Biden against Trump. “This weaponization is not just designed to go after people who took political and constitutional positions is to send a message to everybody else, don’t you dare stand up against us, we will bring the full force govt on you as well,” Eastman said. “If they steal the next election, and the one after that, and the one after that, they want to make sure they do away with the lawyers,” Eastman said of Democrats and the Left.  Mike Howell, executive director of The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project, said congressional Republicans and GOP state attorneys general for falling short in investigating the Left.  Howell said the conservative legal movement isn’t stepping up to defend conservatives who are being targeted by lawfare.  The Republican-controlled House, he said, effectively has funded the Biden administration’s prosecutions of political enemies as well as a border crisis that let millions of illegal aliens into the country.  Howell said the conservative base at times has been “too cheap a date.” “We praise people for sending letters,” Howell said. “We praise them for holding hearings where they don’t even develop a record of asking hard questions. Their uncoordinated message only generates Twitter clips.”  Will Chamberlain, senior counsel at the Internet Accountability Project, presented a list of those on the Left who should face prosecution either by state prosecutors or—under a future Republican presidential administration—the Justice Department.  Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat, appeared to have lied under oath about her romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, her hired prosecutor in the Trump case in Georgia, Chamberlain said.  He noted that Garland, Biden’s attorney general, has been found in contempt of Congress for refusing to provide an audio recording of the president’s two interviews with special counsel Robert Hur about possessing classified documents from his vice presidential and Senate years.  Steve Bannon, a former top Trump aide, has gone to prison for being found in contempt of Congress. Clarke, an assistant attorney general, lied under oath during her confirmation hearing, Chamberlain said, referencing a fact first reported by The Daily Signal.  “We should be willing to use this tool against those who used it against conservatives,” he said.  The post Is Lawfare Against the Left the Only Means to Restore Norms? appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Ambroise Paré: Father of modern surgery

Ambroise Paré: Father of modern surgery

Like a surgeon, a barber must have steady hands, a light touch with sharp instruments, and the trust of his clients. The similarities are less surprising with the realization that, prior to the 18th century, these two professions were one and the same. French barber-surgeon Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) found it impossible to master Latin, which ruled out the more prestigious and lucrative career of physician. While these practitioners seldom deigned to soil themselves with blood and other bodily fluids, barber-surgeons were expected to handle everything from beard trimming and boil lancing to amputations and delivering babies. After an apprenticeship in a Paris hospital, Paré joined the military, where he practiced his craft with diligence and humility. Of one officer he treated, Paré wrote, “I bandaged him and God healed him.” It was perhaps this humility that allowed Paré to find novel solutions that his more learned peers overlooked. The common treatment for bullet wounds at the time was to cauterize them with boiling oil, a procedure that caused inflammation and fever. When Paré ran out of medical supplies, including oil, during the Siege of Turin, he was forced to improvise with a mixture of egg yolk, rose oil, and turpentine. He was happily surprised to see that the men treated in this way recovered much more easily. “See how I learned to treat gunshot wounds,” Paré wrote, “not by books.” Extensive battlefield experience also led Paré to desig the surgical clamp — to this day one of the greatest technological advancements in medical history. In his relentless pursuit of innovation, Pare also pioneered post-surgical care and pain relief, never losing sight of the dignity of the individual men and women he was committed to serve. In this respect, at least, the father of surgery remains far more advanced than many of our own modern medical professionals.

Time for an American truth and reconciliation commission

Time for an American truth and reconciliation commission

As much as I admire Trump advisor Steve Bannon’s fighting spirit, two recent experiences have convinced me that his call for legal retribution is impractical, perhaps impossible. My first experience was the March trial of Rebecca Lavrenz in Washington, D.C.’s federal district court. Lavrenz, one of the 10 women I profile in “Ashli: The Untold Story of the Women of January 6,” is a great-grandmother. On January 4 and 5, 2021, she drove 25 hours by herself to D.C. to pray for the nation. On January 6, when a Capitol door opened from the inside, Lavrenz walked in, prayed for 10 minutes, and walked out. Two months later, FBI agents found their way to her home in rural Colorado and arrested her.The goal pre-election should be to make converts, not enemies. It is in Trump’s best interest to talk the know-nothings off the ledge. As a finalist in the Miss Iowa contest a half century ago, Lavrenz won the congeniality prize. If anything, she has grown more congenial over time, but the bored D.C. jurors could not have cared less. Unimpressed by her sincerity, they convicted her on all four counts. She awaits sentencing in August. To date, D.C. juries have acquitted not a single J6er.In 2020, President Donald Trump received 5% of the D.C. vote. As I learned on the Memorial Day Ashli Babbitt Freedom March, many, perhaps most, of the remaining 95% do not merely dislike Trump; they despise him, loathe him, and fear him. As we marched southeast from the Capitol on the way to the D.C. jail, Trump flags and American flags aflutter, the neighbors, mostly white, freely showered us with abuse. The hatred in their taunts was undisguised. The young women, in particular, impressed me with the range and ardor of their profanity. The citizens of Washington, D.C., the scene of so many political crimes, will never convict a John Brennan or a James Comey, let alone a Nancy Pelosi or a Joe Biden. In fact, a D.C. jury acquitted lawyer Michael Sussmann for lying to the FBI despite his small potatoes status and the overwhelming evidence of his guilt. In his three-year investigation of the plot to frame Trump as a Russian stooge, special counsel John Durham convicted no one.The acquittals allowed many Americans — and just about all Democrats — to ignore the unprecedented treachery of the Obama-Biden regime. If a Trump Justice Department attempts to try the other deserving miscreants, the media will reflexively muddy the waters to the point of murkiness, and the juries will acquit. To attain some modicum of justice, Trump and his people would be wise to channel their urge for retribution into a more practical — and sellable — alternative. One that comes quickly to mind is a South Africa-style “truth and reconciliation commission.” Many on the left, Barack Obama most notably, cut their political teeth protesting apartheid. They, of course, do not see the Obama-Biden regime as morally comparable to the apartheid regime, but they need to. An American TRC would open the nation’s eyes to the enormity of their offenses. What made the South African TRC work was the proffered grant of amnesty to those willing to tell the truth about crimes committed under the color of law. Democratic operatives will be reluctant to come clean in an American TRC, but once some mischief maker begins talking, pressure will rise on others to do the same. A Trump Justice Department may not be able to convict the uncooperative, but it has the power to make their life hell.As in South Africa, the American TRC will allow those injured to come forward and petition for redress. The claimants will be many, including now prominent victims like Carter Page, George Papadopoulos, Paul Manafort, Steve Bannon, Peter Navarro, Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Sidney Powell, and others. Those without resources to fight the regime will benefit even more from the opportunity to make their case in public — the jailed pro-lifers, the persecuted school board protesters, the jobless unvaxxed, the unbanked, the blacklisted, the deplatformed, the hundreds of January 6 protesters knowingly over-charged and over-sentenced.The televised proceedings would expose America to the many injuries and usurpations of the Obama-Biden era: the Russia collusion hoax, the “51 intelligence experts” scam, the Afghanistan debacle, the COVID lies, the House January 6 committee deceptions, the abetting of the illegal alien invasion, the social media suppression, the dementia cover-up, the 2020 election shenanigans, the relentless lawfare against Trump and his attorneys, and so much more.Even educated liberals know little of this relentless abuse. Knowing little, they see no reason why a Steve Bannon would seek retribution. The word scares them. Trump scares them. The Supreme Court horrifies them. They unblushingly share their fears with the clueless on social media.Tempting as it to dismiss the know-nothings among us, they vote. The goal pre-election should be to make converts, not enemies. It is in Trump’s best interest to talk them off the ledge. In this regard, “reconciliation” will work much better as a campaign strategy than “retribution.” As Trump himself said in his unforgettable debate with Biden, the best retribution is success.

What our conservative establishment gets wrong about Europe’s right

What our conservative establishment gets wrong about Europe’s right

One of the most irritating characteristics of the conservative establishment (yes, there is one) is its conventional leftist slant on European politics. This became painfully apparent to me in how the New York Post on June 30 reported those gains made by the Rassemblement National (National Rally) in the first round of France’s legislative elections: “A right-wing party could seize power in France for the first time since the Nazis occupied the country in World War Two — with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally making huge gains in the first round of a high-stakes snap election.” Allow me to offer a few obvious points. Marine Le Pen’s RN has nothing to do with the collaborationist Vichy government that Nazi Germany allowed to take limited power over France in July 1940. That came after Hitler’s armies defeated French forces and occupied much of the country. Unlike the Vichy government, which passed anti-Semitic legislation in October and November 1940, the current French right abounds in Jewish voters. Éric Zemmour, the leader of the Reconquête party, which is to the right of the RN, is a Moroccan Jew. American “conservative” journalists often illustrate a tendency that is common to the left, particularly when it comes to describing the European political spectrum. France’s most well-known historian of the Holocaust, Serge Klarsfeld, who has relentlessly (and sometimes quite unfairly) attacked the French people for their alleged assistance in the deportation of Jews under the Nazis, supports the RN. He considers that party to be the one most sympathetic to Jews in France. Klarsfeld’s son, Arno, has expressed the same position. Whenever the New York Post, Wall Street Journal, and other conventional center-right opinion source refers to a Western European party situated to the right of the ruling blocs, their preferred term for describing that party is “far right.” Whether we are speaking about the Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs, the German AfD, the Flemish Vlaams Belang, or the RN in France, our putative conservatives view these parties as thoroughly unsavory. Meanwhile parties on the left receive perfectly respectful treatment from the same news sources, as members in good standing of the free world. The electoral landslide of Labour under Keir Starmer in Great Britain last week received noticeably favorable coverage in the New York Post and on Fox News. Indeed, we were made to believe that Starmer and his left-wing party were entitled to power “after drought” and in view of the “infighting and scandal” associated with the Tories. Never mind that Labour abounds in leftist kooks and that Starmer promises to restart processing the applications of Third World refugee who arrived in Britain illegally. One might have expected our “conservatives” to note this problem associated with the leftist stampede in the British elections. So far, they haven’t. Even more outrageously, the American “conservative” press was so busy going after the allegedly extremist Marine Le Pen and her RN that it refrained from criticism of France’s Nouveau Front Populaire, the motley leftist front that ran against the governing Renaissance Party and the RN. The NFP, which may be the most dangerously radical party in Europe, gained almost 28% of the votes cast in the French elections. Unfortunately, this group will likely be pulled into a new ruling coalition in France, seeing that Macron’s Renaissance only won about 20% of the vote and seeing that like other globalist woke European leaders, the French president will not form a government with any party to the right of what looks like our Democrats. Last week, about 100 presumably mostly Jewish French authors and academics, including the philosopher Pierre-André Taguieff and the historian Pascal Perrineau, took out space in leading French newspapers to warn against the inclusion of the Front in a future French government. In this grab bag of leftist factions, one finds advocates of imposing Sharia law in France, anti-Semites of the left, and supporters of Palestinian terrorists, some of whom have been active in France. The call among the signatories of the statement to “block the ascent of the union of the Left” is an exhortation to Macron’s government to find other coalition partners, which means, given the present choices, Le Pen and the RN. American “conservative” journalists often illustrate a tendency that is common to the left, particularly when it comes to describing the European political spectrum. They seem to be immovably frozen in an interwar European frame of reference, in which the right is always made up of Nazis and Nazi collaborators, while the left and center-left are led by anti-fascists. The European right, it would seem, remains eternally tainted by association with the Nazis or the Vichy government, while European politicians who denounce “right-wing extremism” are supposedly our friends. None of this makes sense, and in fact this polarization became increasingly irrelevant after World War II. This archaic perspective has produced a thoroughly grotesque picture of the long-overdue revolt in some Western European countries against anti-national, anti-Christian, globalist governments that are destroying European civilization, while opening the continent to terrorism and an Islamic takeover. While those who fear terrorists cheer for the Rassemblement National, some of our “conservatives” stupidly identify the same party with World War II Nazi collaborators. Quel dommage!
