Cruise fined $500K for submitting a false report after last year’s pedestrian crash

Image: Cruise GM’s Cruise will pay a criminal fine of $500,000 to resolve a federal investigation and accept a deferred prosecution agreement after the company admitted to falsifying a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) “with the intent to impede, obstruct, or influence the investigation” of a crash where one of its driverless vehicles struck and dragged a pedestrian in 2023. NHTSA had already fined Cruise $1.5 million in September for submitting incomplete reports that failed to disclose that the robotaxi dragged the pedestrian 20 feet after they were hit by another vehicle and knocked into its path. The dragging wasn’t in a verbal summary Cruise employees gave to NHTSA the next day, video of the accident shown to... Continue reading…

Casio’s first smart ring has innovative features like a stopwatch and flashing alarm

Casio’s smart ring is a tiny digital watch. | Image: Casio Not to be outdone by its longtime rival, Casio has announced its own digital ring watch that brings more functionality than Timex’s wearable that debuted last month. Created to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of Casio getting into the digital watch business, the CRW-001-1JR will be available in Japan starting in December for ¥19,800, or around $128. Although the tiny watch’s case is just shy of being an inch in size, Casio has managed to squeeze in a retro six-segment LCD screen that can display hours, minutes, and seconds. The ring also includes three functional buttons that can control additional features like displaying the date or the time in a different time zone, and a stopwatch. Image: Casio Casio’s new... The new Mac Mini is great — now do the iPhone SE

This could be so much better. | Photo by Allison Johnson / The Verge We could argue all day about the merits of iOS versus Android, but there’s one thing the Android ecosystem offers that you definitely won’t find from Apple right now: a decent midrange phone. By “decent,” I mean something I can enthusiastically recommend. Not “Eh, if it’s literally your only option, then it’s fine,” which is how I’ve caveated my recommendations of the iPhone SE over the past couple of years. Remember the SE? Apple released the first version in 2016, putting a then-current A9 chip into an older body design for $399 compared to $649 for the iPhone 6S. I still have mine, and it rules. Two generations later, and the SE is still Apple’s most affordable iPhone, now starting at $429. For that price, you get a well-built phone... Continue reading…

This iPhone app cleans up local storage and even your social media clutter

If your iPhone storage is always full or almost full, you know how annoying it is to have to delete an iMessage conversation, some old photos, or even apps to take a photo or download something you need at that moment. Even though Apple offers built-in solutions to help you keep your iPhone storage optimized, the developers over at Lilucat created Storage Cleaner. It's an app that not only analyzes everything stored on your iPhone but also helps you clean up even social media clutter. If you like to share photos, videos, and other files through Instagram DM, Telegram, and so on, the app can help you visualize what might be occupying your storage so you can clear it up. Image source: José Adorno for BGR After the Storage Cleaner app analyzes your iPhone data, it tells you how healthy your storage is. It offers three categories: Low Risk (0-33% occupied): Your storage levels are healthy. No immediate action is needed; Moderate Risk (34-60% occupied) Storage usage is moderate. Consider monitoring and managing storage; High Risk (61-100% occupied): Storage usage is high. Performance issues may occur. Action is needed to free up space. The app even tells you that being part of the "Risk Group" could mean your iPhone performs slower, you can't take new photos or videos, your battery drains faster, and so on. The Storage Cleaner app helps you delete similar photos, see what you can erase without impacting your daily usage, and even help you clean data from social media apps in the "Social Cleaner" tab. The developers behind Storage Cleaner are also the owners of another BGR's favorite app, App Lock. What makes this application so good is the fact that the developers thought about every loophole criminals could take advantage of. Image source: José Adorno for BGR The Storage Cleaner app costs $4.99 monthly, but the first 1,000 users can get a Free Forever deal. The offer is available until December 6. You can find the app here. Apple’s new auto-reboot iPhone feature is driving authorities crazy – see it in action

Apple’s new auto-reboot iPhone feature is driving authorities crazy – see it in action

Apple has been pretty serious about improving the iPhone's anti-theft features. With iOS 18, users can finally lock and hide apps with Face ID. These functions make sensitive data safer while preventing scammers from accessing key apps like banks, photos, emails, and more. However, another feature went unnoticed for months. As first reported by 404 Media, law enforcement officers were having issues with iPhones rebooting under "mysterious circumstances." It seems iOS 18 has an inactivity reboot (or an auto-reboot) feature that forces iPhones to restart after some time. While little was known about this, researcher Jiska Classen posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) how auto-reboot on iPhone works. She showed the inactivity reboot feature in action on an iPhone running iOS 18.2 beta 2. https://twitter.com/naehrdine/status/1856802400897503487 In the experiment, we can see that an iPhone left alone without being unlocked reboots after 72 hours. She explains: "Inactivity reboot puts your iPhone into 'Before First Unlock' state, effectively locking encryption keys in the Secure Enclave Processor. Even if thieves leave your iPhone powered on for a long time, they won't be able to unlock it with cheaper, outdated forensic tooling." She reiterates that even if this feature makes it more challenging for law enforcement to get data from criminals' devices, it "won't lock them out completely. Three days is still plenty of time when coordinating steps with professional analysts." The researcher also notes that Apple also prompts users on iOS 18.2 beta to enable Stolen Device Protection. This iOS 17.3 feature was previously hidden under the iPhone's settings, but the company wants users to be aware of it. Stolen Device Protection adds a new layer of protection that helps you keep your data safe even if your iPhone is stolen. A second Face ID authentication is required to erase your content, log off iCloud, or change your password. Here's how to use Stolen Device Protection. George Michael Will Feature In Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ 40th Anniversary Version

Eight years after he died of dilated cardiomyopathy, George Michael will posthumously join in on Band Aid’s 40th Anniversary version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” He will be joined by the likes of Harry Styles, Seal, Cold Play’s Chris Martin, Rita Ora, and more. The special remake will double as an attempt at redeeming Band Aid, after the criticism they received for their last single. Like the original track, which helped raise money for underprivileged children in Ethiopia, proceeds from the upcoming release will also go to charity. Fans anticipate George Michael’s voice from beyond the grave on the 40th anniversary of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ George Michael/Instagram Fans of George look forward to reliving his vocals in the upcoming release, which they also consider a tribute since he died on Christmas day. “My top 3 are Little Drummer Boy, Do They Know Its Christmas by Bandaid, and Last Christmas by George Michael. I’m an 80’s girl!” a fan of the late singer posted, sharing her favorite holiday jams. There has been continued controversy surrounding “Do They Know Its Christmas,” as some consider it an insult to the less privileged. Regardless, the rendition has raised more than $250 million since its inception for African feeding and healthcare initiatives. George Michael/Instagram The new track titled “2024 Ultimate Mix” which is co-produced by Grace Jones and Trevor Horn, will be available for streaming from November 25. The music video directed by Oliver Murray will also follow, showing snippets from previous versions. Sir Peter Blake, who created the original’s sleeve is behind the cover art of the CD and Vinyl version. George Michael/Instagram Among the lineup is a new documentary titled The Making of Do They Know It’s Christmas, which discusses how the song was created in a day. Reports say it will show on BBC 4 on November 29, when the limited CDs and Vinyls will be available for purchase.
