'Look at the forehead': Tennis analyst apologizes for cruel hot-mic remarks about Czech tennis player

Tennis Channel analyst Jon Wertheim has apologized for remarks he made while allegedly engaging in behind-the-scenes banter that wasn't meant to air.During the hot-mic moment, Wertheim was adjusting his camera as the channel showed hosts sitting at their desk with Wertheim on an adjacent screen. As the hosts were reviewing their notes and getting last-minute hair adjustments, Wertheim said, "What do you think I am ... Barbora Krejcikova?"Seemingly making fun of himself, Wertheim was referencing No. 10-ranked Czech tennis player Barbora Krejcikova before her upcoming match against No. 5-ranked Qinwen Zheng of China at the Dow Tennis Classic.Wertheim continued in the clip, posted to X, mocking Krejcikova's appearance:"Look at the forehead when Krejicikova and Zheng take the court ... eight-head," he added.Krejcikova took to her X account two days later to remark on the lack of professionalism on the part of Wertheim, claiming there is a need for increased respect in sports media."You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance," she began. "As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary.""This isn't the first time something like this is happening in sports world," the 28-year-old continued. "I've often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it's time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media. These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field."The athlete added she has a deep love for her sport and wants to see it represented honorably. — (@) 'I am not the victim here.'Nearly six hours after Krejcikova posted her statement, Wertheim issued his own apology in the early hours of the morning.Wertheim called his own comments "deeply regrettable," while still acknowledging them. He then claimed he immediately reached out to Krejcikova and apologized, offering an explanation:"I joined the show by zoom. In rehearsal we were shown a graphic of a player who had just competed. It showed her at an angle that exaggerated her forehead. A few moments later, I was told to frame up my zoom. I looked at the low camera angle and joked that it made my forehead resemble the photo of the player in question."Wertheim noted that someone in the control room engaged in banter with him, and the exchange inadvertently made it to air "without context.""I am not the victim here," Wertheim added. "It was neither professional nor charitable nor reflective of the person I strive to be. I am accountable. I own this. I am sorry." — (@) Fans in Wertheim's replies were confused as to why the issue was brought up by the tennis player days after the fact, especially given that Wertheim claimed he "immediately" reached out to her to apologize.Nonetheless, the Tennis Channel released a statement revealing it had "immediately" and "indefinitely" suspended Wertheim from on-air appearances."The network also apologized to the player, Barbora Krejcikova, as did Jon," the statement read.A public relations representative also called Wertheim a valued member of the channel's family who unfortunately did not meet the company's "standard of respectfulness" in that moment.Like Blaze News? BREAKING: Steve Baker pleads guilty to 4 January 6 charges to avoid the ‘shaming exercise’ of a trial

BREAKING: Steve Baker pleads guilty to 4 January 6 charges to avoid the ‘shaming exercise’ of a trial

On the day his Jan. 6 trial was set to begin in Washington, D.C., Blaze Media journalist Steve Baker pleaded guilty to the four misdemeanor charges against him, saying he would not be put through the “shaming exercise” of a trial with a near-certain outcome.“I made the decision specifically to avoid the shaming exercise of the trial,” Baker said outside the E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse after his change-of-plea hearing on Tuesday. “I’ve watched enough of these trials, as you know, from the media room and in the courtrooms to know that that’s exactly what these are.”U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper set a sentencing hearing for March 6, 2025, but seemed to predict that it would be interdicted by a presidential pardon.Baker, who covered the Jan. 6 protests and riots for his blog, the Pragmatic Constitutionalist, had intended to use a selective-prosecution defense because only politically conservative journalists have been prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice on Jan. 6 charges.'That doesn’t mean as part of a plea he has to say, "I intended to do this."'However, Cooper walled him off from that defense and denied his request for evidence in discovery on the dozens of journalists who were not prosecuted for being at and inside the Capitol on Jan. 6. Cooper likewise denied Baker’s last-minute motion to postpone the trial due to the re-election of former President Donald J. Trump and the likelihood of Jan. 6 pardons. Baker said he originally planned to take his case to trial, but the hard-line stance taken by Judge Cooper at his Nov. 6 pretrial hearing convinced him that a trial was not worth it.“It is really a risk I was willing to take, but after the election last Tuesday and then after my pretrial hearing last Wednesday, which was the very next day, I realized right then and there that the court’s inflexibility was going to persist through a trial,” Baker said. “I said, and that’s when I informed my attorneys, ‘I’m not doing it.’”Baker expressed frustration at the lack of evidence in his case and the government’s reliance on statements he made after the protests to allege his so-called state of mind at the Capitol. Blaze Media journalist Steve Baker was prevented from using a selective-prosecution defense by US District Judge Christopher Cooper. US DOJ, Metropolitan Police Department, Capitol Police CCTV “They make accusations that are not supported by the video that they provided to us in discovery,” Baker said. “At one point, [attorney Bill Shipley] called me up and said, ‘I think they're trying to send a signal that they want you to go to trial and do this thing because the videos they’re sending show you doing nothing more than being a journalist in the building that day,’ which is exactly what I did.”Defense attorney Bill Shipley said Baker’s change of plea is not tantamount to a confession.“You don't have to make a confession. We just have to acknowledge that there’s evidence that the government has that they will use to show intent, and we are not today contesting that evidence,” Shipley said. “But that doesn’t mean as part of a plea he has to say, ‘I intended to do this.’”Baker has said he felt the DOJ was going after him for things he said on and after Jan. 6 and because his coverage as an independent journalist and later an investigative reporter for Blaze Media has caused the government embarrassment.Baker said Judge Cooper lit into him for things he has written about District of Columbia judges and the DOJ, claiming he impugned the work of the criminal justice system.“He then went into a long and passionate defense of how fair they have been,” Baker told Blaze News. “All of the judges, all of the courts have worked so hard to make sure all of the Jan. 6 defendants got a fair trial.”Shipley said the defense gave prosecutors 61 names of journalists who entered the restricted space of the Capitol but were never charged with any crime. Baker said he has a longer list of more than 90 journalists, podcasters, social media influencers, bloggers, stringers, and freelancers who were at the Capitol. Defense attorneys William Shipley (left) and Edward Tarpley Jr. appear with Blaze Media journalist Steve Baker at a press conference after Baker pleaded guilty to four Jan. 6 misdemeanors.Rebeka Zeljko/Blaze News“There’s only been three or four of us who have been tried, charged, convicted, or pled guilty — and every one of us are voices on the right side of the political ledger,” Baker said.Because there is not a “no contest” plea in federal criminal court and using an Alford plea requires approval of the attorney general, Baker ended up simply pleading guilty. In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit to crimes charged but accepts being sentenced for them.“I wasn’t going to get approval for anything like that [Alford plea],” Baker said. “And so the bottom line is that the mischaracterization of the statement of facts is what I'm talking about, and I pled guilty to their assertions today to avoid the shaming process of going through one of these trials because that's exactly what they are. I have witnessed them because, as I said before, they lie.”Baker said if President-elect Donald J. Trump follows through with his campaign pledge to pardon Jan. 6 defendants, “Then I'm very confident that I'm at the top of the list.”Baker said Judge Cooper seemed to acknowledge that pardons will be forthcoming from the White House. The judge decided to give the monologue he usually reserves for sentencing hearings because, “It’s not likely I’m going to see you in March.'”Like Blaze News? 'He used the word Mennonite': Junior hockey player suspended 5 games for 'marginalizing' an opponent

A junior hockey player was suspended for five games for referring to an opposing player as a Mennonite and therefore violating the league's rules on provocation.20-year-old Landon Sim of the London Knights was issued the five-game suspension for "marginalizing" an opponent on both "religious and cultural grounds," the Ontario Hockey League found. The OHL is in the Canadian Hockey League, which is comprised of several leagues across Canada (Western, Ontario, and Quebec) and is considered the top-tier of junior hockey in the world. On November 6, Sim was ejected with a game misconduct for his violation during a 5-1 win against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds."He used the word 'Mennonite,'" Sim's agent, Andrew Maloney, said, according to the London Free Press. "He was insulted by a player on the other team, just regular back-and-forth banter. Landon used the word toward him. I think it was just something he said without knowledge behind it," the agent added.Maloney also called Sim's remarks "wrong and inappropriate" as well as a teachable moment, among other platitudes. The OHL commissioner told the London, Ontario, outlet that a player may not use certain language to provoke another player, citing a series of prohibited language that includes: "Race, age, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, creed, gender, sexual orientation, marital status or disability.""This is a violation of the league's code of conduct and it carries with it a minimum suspension of five games," OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford said.Sim's agent did not argue for his client on a free speech basis but rather that there should be "layers" to the type of discipline a player receives depending on the language they use."A player called a kid a monkey and got the same number of games (as Sim). Last season, a player told a kid he should go kill himself and got the same amount of games. There has to be layers to this rule. It's not a bad rule, but when it's interpreted in a one-size-fits-all category, it doesn't work," Maloney attempted to explain. Landon Sim was drafted in the 6th round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues.Photo by Minas Panagiotakis/Getty ImagesThis is actually Sim's second suspension related to mean words in 2024.In May, Sim was suspended five games for calling then-Saginaw Spirit captain Braden Hache a word that allegedly implied he was "soft."Former OHL commissioner David Branch said at the time the remark was "an inappropriate comment under our diversity program," despite the league being seemingly too fearful to identify what the word was.In response, Sim's agent claimed at the time that "there is no due process in the league."All OHL players and staff are reportedly subjected to mandatory diversity policy training before each season.Sim was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and has eight points the first 10 games of the 2024-2025 OHL season.Like Blaze News?
