Broadway shows saw a 17% decrease in attendance for the 2022-23 season compared to 2018-19‚ the last full season before the COVID pandemic. A new survey found that a significant reason for this dip is “safety concerns” from suburban residents who would otherwise travel to Manhattan for a show. Broadway League reported last month that 12.3 million tickets were sold last season‚ much fewer than the previous non-pandemic year. New Yorkers make up 35% of show attendees‚ with city residents accounting for 22%. Visitors from other areas of the country make up 47.5% of the audience‚ per the report. The Broadway League declined to comment on the numbers‚ as The New York Post reported. “We do not speculate generally about the numbers‚” company spokesperson Scalla Jakso responded to the request. Multiple people were shot Thursday morning after a gunman opened fire at Perry High School — around 40 miles northwest of Des Moines‚ Iowa — before classes started on students’ first day back from the holiday break‚ according to local authorities. Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said the first report on an active shooter inside the school came in at 7:37 a.m.‚ and officers were on the scene within seven minutes. The officers located “multiple gunshot victims” and identified the shooter‚ but Infante could not provide further details about the number of victims or their current condition. In a press conference immediately following the shooting‚ the sheriff confirmed that there was “no further danger to the public‚” and a law enforcement official later said that the shooter was dead‚ CNN reported. “The community is safe. We’re just now backwards trying to figure out everything that happened and make notifications‚” Infante said.
