Privacy on the Line: Canada’s Bill S-210 Pushes Digital ID Age Verification as a Catch-All Solution

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Canada’s proposed legislation, Bill S-210 (first introduced in late 2011 as the “Protecting Young Persons from Exposure to Pornography Act”) has cleared the Senate. It is currently close to ending its “journey” through the House of Commons before getting adopted. And adopted it easily be very soon – even if the process in the committee currently looking into it did not include any critics and their testimonies. The issue with this, as with so many other bills in different jurisdictions around the world, particularly in some US states, is that a very serious and sensitive subject such as fostering the well-being of young people does not seem to be approached in the serious and responsible way it deserves to be. Instead, it looks like yet another roundabout way to usher in age verification, which, it bears repeating, would impact the privacy and security of all internet users. As Bill S-210 critics point out, the text speaks about sexually explicit material as its target (in terms of preventing those too young from accessing it) – but without clearly and precisely defining what that content is. The overbroad definition that’s there meanwhile serves as the “gateway” to age verification, which platforms are expected to (try) to do in order to protect their business from fines, ranging from 250,000 to half a million Canadian dollars. One thing leads to another, so to speak, and from there, criticism of Bill S-210 is that because it doesn’t afford procedural rights to content creators it could result in what are known as “preemptive takedowns.” And, no great surprise there – the bill’s proposals are dismissed as “almost certainly technologically unfeasible.” The S-210 rules would apply to “any organization” making what’s broadly defined as sexually explicit online content, for commercial purposes, subject to the new rules. The rules state that a platform must implement an age verification method (rather than “believe” that someone is of a certain age). The bill’s text makes a fairly astonishing claim that “online age-verification technology is increasingly sophisticated.” How would the bill’s authors have arrived at such a conclusion? Reports out of Canada say that Senator Julie Miville-Dechene “appears to have worked with the age verification industry when drafting the legislation.” And what that means is that the senator “took its (the industry’s) assurances around things like age-estimation AI as being workable without privacy infringement.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. From Being Stranded In Canal To Getting The Best Life, Senior Dog’s Life Takes A 180 Degree Turn

The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) shares an “incredible story of resilience and survival” of a senior dog they rescued from a shopping cart in the middle of a canal back in June of this year. The senior dog, a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix named Dorothea, was rescued on June 16 thanks to the joint effort of AHS and the Phoenix Fire Department. “AHS Dispatchers were alerted to a dog in distress by a Good Samaritan who spotted her stuck in the middle of a canal laying on top of a shopping cart,” AHS wrote in a news release. AHS explained, “By using a ladder and various AHS rescue devices to get her up to safety, the sweet senior pup was all tail wags when she was finally ashore.” AHS also shared the video of Dorothea a few moments before she was rescued, which broke the hearts of many. In the video, Dorothea can be seen on top of the shopping cart in the canal, looking dejected, like she lost all hope of ever getting rescued. One Facebook user wrote, “Someone probably placed that sweet baby on there on purpose thinking it was funny and then couldn’t get him back. Poor baby.” After her rescue, Dorothea received a medical assessment on AHS’ Pet Ambulance where they found that she is “dehydrated, hungry, covered in ticks and a bit stinky from the canal water.” She also was immediately given food, water, and a much needed bath. Furthermore, AHS shared that given the predicament they found her, she was in great health except for a few minor injuries, and some dental work for a few fractured teeth. AHS reveals, “throughout her month of treatment at the shelter (including a spa day with AHS’ groomer) Dorothea was found to be a sweet, loving girl who enjoyed cuddles and attention from humans.” After being found in a situation that the shelter described as having “little to no chance of survival”, Dorothea fully recovered, and is now living her best life with her forever family in Youngtown, Arizona. Facebook users can’t help but be touched at how Dorothea took a 180 degree turn in life. One user said, “Being older it makes me wonder if someone dumped her, I really hope not. Happy life beautiful Dorothea! You held onto hope and now have a beautiful life ahead.” “That story warms my heart! Heroes one and all and thank you everyone for saving that sweet baby and happy new life to you sweet Dorothea,” another wrote. Furthermore, AHS wrote, “Although it is unknown how long or why she was in the canal, Dorothea’s incredible story highlights the lifesaving work that the Arizona Humane Society is able to accomplish as it cares for almost 22,000 pets each year.”

Purported Connersville Bigfoot Captured on Trail Camera

A series of images, allegedly taken by a game camera in Indiana, show a mysterious bipedal figure moving through a wooded area. The photographs, sent to the Rocky Mountain Sasquatch Organization by Josh Banker, were taken recently on his property near Connersville. Banker shared that the images reveal a figure crossing in front of the camera, leading him to wonder if he may have documented a real Sasquatch encounter. He also noted that neighbors had reported hearing strange, unsettling screams at night—a sound he had previously attributed to local dogs reacting to deer. However, following this recent capture, he humorously remarked, “No more going into the woods without my .45.” Some observers believe the creature could be a Sasquatch, though others suggest it may simply be a standing bear. A bear may stand on its hind legs to get a better look at something while surveying their surroundings, to sniff the air or appear larger when it feels threatened. This behavior, though temporary, gives it a bipedal stance that resembles the silhouette of Bigfoot. As is often the case with alleged Bigfoot sightings, the photographs remain inconclusive, but are certainly intriguing. Brighter Shores is a gorgeous new fantasy RPG from the creator of RuneScape

I love a good fantasy RPG. Be it the dirty streets of Dragon Age: Origins' Ferelden, or the sprawling emerald plains of World of Warcraft's Elywnn Forest, there's nothing quite like immersing yourself in a universe brimming with magic, mayhem, and endless possibility. For many, RuneScape is that universe, which is why it still manages to stand tall amid a slew of competitor MMORPGs 23 years down the line. But we wouldn't have RuneScape if not for Andrew Gower, its original creator, and he's back with a brand new point-and-click RPG called Brighter Shores. Amazon nerfs New World Aeternum’s XP rewards in its new PvP zone

Less than a month after it launched, Amazon Games has nerfed the XP rewards of New World Aeternum’s new PvP zone, The Cursed Mists. The area arrived as part of the MMO’s recent revamp, and it presents players with an extraction-like gameplay loop with unique loot and XP available for playing. Amazon says the zone was giving players “more PvP experience than intended,” with the rewards now brought back down. Nvidia is making a new PC CPU to take on Intel, AMD, and Apple, says report

Nvidia is planning to take on Intel and AMD with a new CPU designed for use in consumer PCs, according to a report. The move could see the gaming GPU maker challenge the domination of Intel and AMD in the PC world, particularly when it comes to laptops and AI, but the company’s lack of an x86 license will present a challenge when it comes to this rumored Nvidia CPU running PC games and the PC’s expansive software back catalog. Not only does Nvidia make the best graphics card for gaming right now, in the form of the RTX 4090, but it’s now also the world’s most valuable company, thanks to its huge strides in the AI world. We’re expecting the new RTX 5000 gaming GPU lineup to launch in the near future, but it looks as though Nvidia could also be launching a new CPU range in 2025 as well.
