Amazon’s CEO defends return-to-office policy

Illustration by Laura Normand / The Verge Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is pushing back on claims that his return-to-office mandate was a “backdoor layoff.” In a transcript of an all-hands staff meeting seen by Reuters and CNBC, Jassy said the move “is very much about our culture and strengthening our culture.” In September, Amazon announced that it would start making employees return to the office five days per week starting January 2nd, 2025. The e-commerce giant previously required employees to work in the office three days per week. Some speculated that the five-day-per-week mandate is a “layoff in disguise,” intended to push out employees who couldn’t or wouldn’t make the full return. “A number of people I’ve seen theorized that the reason we were doing this is, it’s a backdoor... Google CEO says the company should be a ‘trusted source’ in the election

Sundar Pichai. | Image: Laura Normand / The Verge Google CEO Sundar Pichai told employees ahead of Election Day to make sure “the products we build” are “a trusted source of information to people of every background and belief.” “As with other elections, the outcome will be a major topic of conversation in living rooms and other places around the world,” Pichai said in an internal memo on November 4th obtained by The Verge and first reported on by The Washington Post. “And of course, the outcome will have important consequences.” “Whomever the voters entrust, let’s remember the role we play at work, through the products we build and as a business: to be a trusted source of information to people of every background and belief. We will and must maintain that.” Naturally, Google has... Continue reading…

Steam’s built-in game recording is now available to all

Image: The Verge Steam Game Recording is officially out of beta and available to all users, giving PC, Mac, and Steam Deck players a built-in way to record and share audio and video from their gaming sessions. It joins many other ways PC gamers have been able to record their highlights, including as a feature of tools like the Xbox Game Bar, Nvidia GeForce, and AMD’s Adrenalin. This version of the Steam client is also the first to drop support for Windows 7 and 8 machines, as well as Macs running macOS 10.13 and 10.14 after Valve announced the move at the beginning of this year. Image: Valve After an automatic update, players can start recordings manually using a hotkey (Ctrl + F11 is the default) or set it to trigger automatically,... Continue reading…

Elon Musk is being sued over his $1 million giveaway to voters — again

Image: Kristen Radtke / The Verge; Getty Images Arizona resident Jacqueline McAferty is suing Elon Musk and his pro-Trump America PAC in a Texas federal court, alleging that the PAC’s $1 million-a-day lottery to registered voters in swing states was fraud. The proposed class-action lawsuit was filed a day after a Philadelphia judge denied the city’s request to order Musk to end the lottery — and seems to have been spurred by Musk’s legal defense in the Philadelphia case. The complaint, filed in a federal court in Austin, alleges that Musk falsely claimed the PAC would choose sweepstakes winners randomly when the selections were, in fact, predetermined. The complaint cites comments made yesterday by Chris Gober, a Republican lawyer CNBC identified as America PAC’s former treasurer. “... Continue reading…

These delayed Apple TV features are finally coming in tvOS 18.2

After a tame tvOS 18.1 update, it seems Apple is finally serious about introducing some delayed Apple TV features in tvOS 18.2. As the company started a new beta cycle, it finally added one of the delayed features announced at WWDC 2024: Support for other formats. While Apple promised the new 21:9 aspect ratio, which is perfect for Apple TVs connected to projectors, the company also added a few other options, such as 2.37:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1, DCI 4K, and 32:9. These options are available under Apple TV's Audio and Video settings. Besides that, there's another feature that could finally be available in future tvOS 18.2 beta updates: new Apple screen savers. As spotted by MacRumors, tvOS 18.2 codes reference new screen savers. The publication says Apple is working on four categories of screen savers, including Snoopy, TV and Movies, Music, and Soundscapes. While MacRumors got an early look at some of those screensavers, Apple said we'll see the Snoopy and TV and Movies screen savers "later this year." The Music and Soundscapes options are new and will likely be added alongside the previously announced options. Finally, Apple promised that robot vacuum cleaners will be compatible with the Home app and can participate in automation and scenes. Unfortunately, it's unclear which robot vacuums will support this feature, even though Apple says this feature is still coming in 2024. Apple is expected to release tvOS 18.2 by early December; this means the beta testing of the upcoming software update won't last for very long, and we should have around three new builds before the official version is out. After many tvOS 18 features have made their debut, I can't wait for my Apple TV to get support for these other new capabilities. The new screen savers will make a nice addition, while the 21:9 aspect ratio will be perfect for using XGIMI's new Horizon S Max projector, which was recently reviewed by BGR. You can find everything new in tvOS 18 below. Into the Great Wide Open: The Evolution of Steppe Pastoralist Societies

With the 'time-travelling' ability of archaeogenetic studies it has become possible to shed light onto the dynamic past of human populations worldwide. Integrated with archaeological and anthropological data, it has been shown that fundamental changes in lifestyle, culture, technical know-how and social systems were often linked to the movement and interaction of people. By studying 131 individuals from the wider Caucasus region, spanning a time transect of 6000 years, a team of international researchers was able to reconstruct a series of key events when contact and innovation transfer facilitated the economic exploration of the West Eurasian steppe belt. Nomadic Tribes of the Eurasian Steppes: Lifestyle and Impacts on Settled Societies 4,000-Year-Old Bronze Age Pyramid Found in Kazakhstan Is First Ever on Asian Steppe! People of the Caucasus Region The wider Caucasus region, between the Black and the Caspian Seas, connects Europe, the Near East and Asia. It displays a huge geographic, ecological, economic, cultural, and linguistic range today, from the steppe zone in the north, the Caucasus mountains in the center, to the highlands of today's Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran in the south. This diversity was no different in the past, where the archaeological record attests to many different influences from many surrounding regions. "It is precisely this interface of different eco-geographic features and archaeological cultures that makes the region so interesting to study," explains Dr. Wolfgang Haak, senior author and principal investigator of the study. Robin Wright Argues Jenny’s ‘Anti-Feminist’ Role In ‘Forrest Gump’

Robin Wright faced some criticism over her Forrest Gump character Jenny Cullen, which she addressed during a recent interview with The New York Times while pushing her new movie, Here. Critics claim her role as Gump’s lover was anti-feminist due to her life’s decline. Melena Ryzik asked Robin to share her thoughts about the debate, to which she responded that Jenny was simply selfish and seemed undeserving of Gump’s love, but her character was not set out to push against feminist values. Robin Wright clarifies the anti-feminist assumption about Jenny Robin Wright and Tom Hanks/Everett Jenny lived a carefree life of social liberation with vices like drugs and multiple sexual partners, which some people have mistaken to mean feminist values. However, it was a time when women tasted economic and financial freedom for the first time, and it is not a surprise they sometimes went overboard. Jenny had a tragic end after contracting AIDS, which seemed like a consequence of how she lived her life. It seemed like a warning to feminist women with a hint of fear tactics or effect. Gump loved her to the very end, regardless, as he offered to take care of her at his mother’s house. They eventually married, but sadly, Jenny died shortly after. Robin Wright and Tom Hanks/Everett Robin Wright reflects on her time on ‘Forrest Gump’ Robin admitted that working on Forrest Gump was a great experience she will always hold dear, adding that she worked with an incredible team. Lead actor Tom Hanks, who won Oscars for best picture and actor for the ‘90s hit movie, said Forrest Gump requires no sequel. FORREST GUMP, Robin Wright/Everett Forrest Gump gained the love of viewers upon release, earning its spot as 1994’s second highest-grossing movie. It also made the United States National Film Registry through the Library of Congress in 2021. Forrest Gump has won six Academy Awards so far amid many nominations.
